I've been obsessed with hammers and pulls lately, and I just found the perfect person to make myself even more obsessed! I should have known you'd be in the top three videos, just like with every other technique! I love that Mr Gilbert is not only an absurdly good player, but such a patient sounding teacher, and so articulate! Articulate, yet possesses the ability to easily distill things down to a level where even a novice would understand. He really is kind of a living treasure for the guitar community, just saying...
hello if Mr. Gilbert is here somewhere responding -- do you know the guitar playing of a guy from the late 60s early 70s called ollie halsall? he was a remarkably fast, clean and creative player and had some sounds like what you've shown here ..
f this is not the lesson for everyone at Intermediate level I don't know what is. Great play, I just got introduced to the gello, molds the guitar to every guitar player.
I don't understand 3:20. I'm looking his fingers, can someone give me the tabs/explain how the sequence goes? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around that lick
Straight scale up the A Natural Minor Scale. 5-6-8 on the B string. 5-8-5-7-8-7-5 on the High E. Straight scale down on the B...8-6-5. Repeat. Pick string once per string change.
Fantastic. Got any tips on how to do a bend that leads directly to a pull-off? I'm finding it hard to control how hard the note sounds - the bend makes it all too easy to slam the note, and it's also surprisingly easy to mute it by mistake.
@@animalchin9601 Thanks! Yes, I mean bending the note up, then pulling off to sound the open string. I finally figured out a way that works for me - it is very finger dependent! It seems to work best using the index finger. If you have any more tips they'd be much appreciated.
@@champnessjack1154 I would say work on finger string in your ring finger to get more control from it as well also trying to get a cleaner tone by watching where your fingers land not letting other strings sound out with mutiing
how the hell your hand doesn;t freak out when you try to do the hammer on and pull ups with the pinky? my hand doesn't even seem to agree to terms and conditions of this movement it looks like my ring finger feels sorry for my pinky and trying to offer his help
Funny. I can do the pull offs with all fingers but my index finger. How so? Because when I use my middle finger it's so close to my index that when I try and flick the string with my middle finger my index finger gets pushed down (my middle finger pushing my index finger) resulting in the note going sharp (due to it being bent slightly).
It's been 6 months since I made this comment. I practiced relentlessly and got rid of the issue. It was clearly technique issue. It was the way I positioned my wrist, thumb and fingers that didn't give me enough leverage. I'm still working on improving it. What 6 months of practice can do, right? Haha
So, one pick to play the six notes. Can't quite make out when to pick for the follow up notes. The descending 5 notes, the camera is too far away to see which strings you are playing.
I have some fairly small hands but that's where utilizing your pinky comes in...I just played the beginning of the lick with a metronome at 90bpm...did if for like 5 min then sped it up to 120bpm...I can do the lick but it takes some time. You can do it too.

i trust in the man's lesson that once taught buckethead :D
Depends on your taste and what you know of him. If you only know him from shred and effects videos I can understand that
where can i find non effects video of buckethead lol
Everywhere. "Animal Behavior" is a cool example.
Buckethead is carol, who took lesson from shawn lane
he can probably bench press a car with that pinky
It has its own zip code
I absolutely love this sound. Played with a wah it‘s like heaven.

"Here is a lick that only me Paul Gilbert and three dudes in the world can do..."

MegaBrny LOL
You do it yet?
How'd it go?
This is exactly what i was looking for. Great-great stuff! Thank you
He's like playing ridiculously fast but with strength
Good job, Big Paulie ♥️
Anyone notice he said F# when it was actually an F? EVEN THE MASTER MESSES UP SOMETIMES!
just proves that he's human..
even Jimmy Paige and Hendrix and Slash make misakes and these are three awesome rock stars!
@Kevin James....and?
You go write a melody like that with a key change you fuckin doof
@@GuitarsAndSynths Page is sloppy bullshit and Hendrix didn't think about notes.

Dat elbow movement tho
That's serious Stretch and mighty pinky
Brilliant guitarist
Terbaek paul gilbert..hang mmg power!
Why does he have three middle fingers?
f this is not the lesson for everyone at Intermediate level I don't know what is. Great play, I just got introduced to the gello, molds the guitar to every guitar player.
Those are some dem long fingers you got there!
Do you use your plec whilst doing that exercise or just hammer on pull off with your fingers?
Simple...but not easy. Steve Stine has good videos with basic hamner on, pull off, trill exercises to strengthen and co-ordinate the fretting fingers.

Hey man! I’ve been self taught for about six years I can help! Can you clarify what you mean by like a bend leading to a pull off?
Do you mean bending a note up then down and pulling off?

i can't make the note sound well on the 3 last strings using pull offs : note guitar unplugged

His hands were designed for playing guitar.

Must be nice to have a pinky that can extend like 9 frets.
Oxymoron: Little finger is the longest finger
The mighty Michael Schenker doesn't even use his pinky lol And he's truly a guitar god, another level, next to EVH.
Where can I find that intro riff
Its from the song scarified
Your pinky is fking strong ...do u lift weights with it
