    Unfortunately the woman depicted in the mosaic at the beginning of the video is not Irene of Athens but a completely different person, another Byzantine empress named Irene who lived over 300 years later (in the early XIIth century). Originally called Piroska, she was a Hungarian princess who married the Byzantine emperor John II Comnenos and, although she never reigned herself, she is venerated as a Saint in the Orthodox church for her piety and many charitable works (the mosaic is in Hagia Sophia).

    It's funny how religions are so different in their views. I was raised Catholic and statues and icons and pictures of Jesus and saints was something you took for granted. When I went to my aunt and uncle's Methodist church it seemed so empty, with no statues, stained glass windows, etc. But they liked it better that way. To each his own, but it should never have been anything to fight over.

      Yeah, I'm Catholic and Irish so every single parish has a feat of architecture for a church. We had to research Protestant churches for a history class in school, and they felt so... Bare. But I thought they were quite beautiful in their own way, and understand why they're like that.

      @@cinna_sultan The Tudors are probably taught b/c that period (and the Stuarts immediately after them) were influential in defining the *religious* settlement England was to enjoy for basically the next 4 centuries (e.g. why England isn't Catholic, why the British monarch can't be Catholic, etc.)
      Now, this was a lot more important in prior generations, since religion played a much larger part in everyone's daily life back then, but since religion is a huge part of English history (& in the history of Britain's former colonies) teaching a defining moment in that history *could* be valuable information to the right person. Not *every* person; not every historian; not even every student of English ecclesiastical history. But some people.
      The other reason is that people have heard of them, & it's easier to teach an interested student than a disinterested student. Six wives, virgin queen, bloody Mary and all that; they're familiar. Now, I'm not saying they *should* be given the extreme coverage they are; I would much rather my own pet subjects get more attention as well! I'm just noting why I think they *do* get that coverage.

    1:28 Roman Emperor Honorius remained in the West throughout his reign since he was the Western Roman Emperor so he never retreated to the East. Rome was no longer the capital when it got sacked in 410AD, instead Ravenna was the capital of the Western Roman Empire because it had better defenses than Rome. Emperor Honorius reign from Ravenna until his death there in 423AD.

    • @timschultz7597
      @timschultz7597 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Juan Ferreira you are correct. If I may add... The recognition of the Bishop of Rome of who the emperor was, didn't matter all that important to Constantinople. Christ's Church was splitting along the same lines as the old empire causing east and west to not agree on many things. The anointing of Charlemagne as western emperor was another of those points of controversy. The Patriarch of Constantinople was not keen on Irene being empress either but did not have much choice with the powerbase she had created.

    Funny how history [as stories] is told depending on who you ask, even at an academic level.
    _"The barbarians sacked and conquered the western regions of the Roman Empire"_

    • @cinna_sultan
      @cinna_sultan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      It was in the Qu'ran that Constantinople would be conquered by the Ottomans, those so called "barbarians" pursued religious tolerance for 500 years.
      Even Queen Consort of England, Caroline of Brunswick took a visit there. Many Jews and Christians also lived in Constantinople peacefully under their rule.
      Ottomans did terrible stuff but in a world like this they were possibly the fairest.

    Now I'm curious about Empress Martina, her life story, and her ultimately doomed attempt to reign in her own right... I've never heard of her prior to this bio of another amazing woman, Empress Irene. In fact, even the details of the history of the East with the Eastern Roman Empire, church, and the renaming of the Empire as Byzantine amazes me with how one-sided my world history education really is. They aren't kidding when they say history is written by the winners(a nice way of saying land/power-grubbing oppressors). Can anyone tell me why it is such a norm to take over land in error- building fashion? What's wrong with keeping and maintaining one's own borders? Why is prior and prestige tied in with war and land grabbing. Like, I get it when a people run low on food or economic opportunities and turn to other lands and locations for Verte opportunities despite other peoples living there. Like the Vikings in the initial adventures. But it seems like greed ultimately takes over and honor in war for much needed goods for survival become honor in war due to greed and self- serving desires... crazy how the larger history reflects general human behaviors and spirit in all its ugliness (as well as it's kinder side, but here I was discussing the negative side specifically)...

The RC church used Latin as the liturgical language & believed that the bishop of Rome i.e the Pope was the supreme head of the church. And it was Constantine that founded Constantinople on the remains of Byzantium and made it the new Capital seventy years prior ! Excuse me but what you are saying there is absolute nonsense !

    For the record, we, the orthodox christians, don't celebrate Irene the Athenian as a saint. Cause even she was given such a title from some of her supporters the Orthodox Church never till now recognised her as saint.

    I've always heard the story of Charlemange but I've never heard that he was basically unsuper (of the title at least) of an Empress. I just assumed the Pope titled him Emperor of Holy Roman Empire just cuz and because of the religious tensions between the two Churches.

    Thank you Lindsey as always for creating great content. Can someone clarify one thing, it was the Eastern Orthodox church that was pro iconoclasty and the Roman Catholic church that was against it? If so, why exactly? And where would the Protestant church stand on the issue? (I know it came centuries later but still)
    Also would love a video on Celtic Queen Boudicia!

    • @jeandehuit5385
      @jeandehuit5385 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So, Iconoclasts=someone who *doesn't* like images. During the 2 Byzantine Iconoclasms, some people (such as Emperor Constantine V) were pro-Iconoclasm; they didn't like images. Other Byzantines & the Pope were 'Iconophiles' and they were in favour of images during worship.
      IIRC, in both cases the the Iconoclast arguments were not persuasive & images continued to be used in worship both in the Orthodox Church *and* the future Latin Church (later Catholic Church).
      However, opposition to the use of images in worship became a running theme during the Reformation, without this movement being called Iconoclasm per-say. As a result, while Protestants were not *technically* Iconoclasts, they probably would have found sympathy with Iconoclast arguments & agreed that images shouldn't be excessively used in Church.
      For example, both Byzantine Iconoclasms resulted in a temporary period where image-based religious art used in worship was destroyed. In the English Reformation, a lot of Catholic art was similarly destroyed (Medieval tapestries, paintings, statues, etc.). While Iconoclasm wasn't mentioned by name, Protestants often drew upon the same kinds of arguments made by Iconoclasts (no worship of graven images, etc.)
      This is coming from a committed Atheist who was a history minor in university (to lay my biases upfront), btw, in case you want to know the 'providence' of this information.

    Honorius did not retreat to Constantinople, he was the Western emperor in Ravenna. His brother Arcadius went to Constantinople.

    • @nobudgetfilms4628
      @nobudgetfilms4628 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      15:22 Constantine VI was never really an Iconoclast, he supported the icons but only wanted to back the Iconoclast so that he had military support. 16:54 Irene did not also use the title "Basileus" but still kept "Basilisa", although she still ruled in her name from 797 onwards. 21:08 Nikephoros I's reign lasted for 9 not 3 years, he died in 811 in battle against the Bulgarians with his skull turned into a drinking cup. 22:19 And lastly Irene's feast day is August 9.
