      All of this reminds me of the Star Trek movie where Scotty sabotaged the fleet's new starship so it couldn't follow them. When they asked how he did it, he said, "The more complicated you make the plumbing, the easier it is to stop up the drain".

      When I started my career in auto fixing 45 years ago wiper motor failures were very common below 100k miles. Turning on wipers when they were frozen to windshield killed the motor in minutes. New cars often use touchless electronics(position sensing and current monitoring) to control parking and if the motor stalls the power is cut off. Many have the ability to change the full sweep range so the blades don’t run into ice dams that beat wiper blades apart. All this fancy stuff also does away with the soft arm bases and low nut torque so the arm shears free instead of killing motor.

    • @mikechiodetti4482
      @mikechiodetti4482 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good ole vacuum wipers. Then they added "Double Acting Fuel Pumps" which not only pumped fuel, but the upper section was a vacuum booster of sorts. It helped to keep the wipers moving during increased throttle times. Didn't cure wipers from stopping. When the cam shaft lobe wore down, the fuel part worked, the vacuum boost didn't.

    I remember reading someplace that the wiper motor pulse board module is the part that usually fails. I can't remember where I read the information, but that the wiper motor pulse board module from a similar year Chevy Trailblazer is interchangeable with the Chevy SSR wiper motor pulse board module. I believe that motor pulse board module for Chevy Trailblazers is listed as a separate part and still available from GM.

    Happy 4th of July!. I enjoy watching your videos. I just finished filming the swap out of the power steering pump on my 2004 Chevy SSR. The wiper motor issue is a somewhat common failure for the Chevy SSR. As you found, the wiper motor is not available for the Chevy SSR any longer. The typical solution for this type of issue has been to replace only the wiper motor module that resides on the wiper motor assembly with one from a Chevy Trailblazer (even though it doesn't list it for the Chevy SSR). This is one of those times that the Chevy SSR being based on the Trailblazer EXT platform, works out for the Chevy SSR. It turns out that GM / ACDelco part number 19120931 for the Trailblazer wiper motor module will replace the one in the Chevy SSR and usually it fixes this issue. GM/ACDelco P/N 19120931 is still available from a variety of parts suppliers.

    • @cgmoog
      @cgmoog 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good to know (not that I own one). Assume the packaging of the motor is slightly different between trailblazer and this. How do the modules fail? Bad solder joints? Moisture caused corrosion? Or just electronics taking a crap? Send bad motor (with module) to AVE in BC for failure analysis (unless Cardone needs the core).

    • @RetroCarGuy530
      @RetroCarGuy530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cgmoog some of the failed units have had the "green crud" inside and others have just failed without any obvious sign of water intrusion. It seems that a SSR owner will ask for assistance on the various websites and groups about this topic at least three or four times a year. One SSR owner has a large library of PDF documents on how to fix common issues and he has a PDF document covering this problem. I haven't created a video on this issue yet since I haven't had anyone in my area with this issue (yet). I believe the ACDelco P/N 19120931 costs about $80 USD for the wiper motor pulse board module by itself.

Long story short, I assigned each key on the number pad a resistance 0-150K. The computer then took that value and converted it to that number/operation. Got an engineering award. Great diagnosis as always.. only thing ticking me off, is the lack of fender covers.. I'm a paint tech and technician myself, but also a car enthusiast and get ticked off when I see technicians not taking care of the paint finish.. please use covers and refrain from setting hard plastic boxes on the engine covers too.. this is clearly a show car, and I'm certain the owner will not appreciate scratches on his paint or engine cover.. I've personally had a tech put scratches on my fuse box cover under the hood, when my car battery was replaced under warranty (they wouldn't let me install it) for a parasitic draw due to a software issue for the cruise control.. sounds anal I know, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who looks after his car like that... big fan of your channel Sir, and mean no disrespect...

Also, making sure power was good and no shorts to ground. Checking all the switch positions was interesting, but felt like a red herring. I assume it was a "make sure" before ordering the expensive part.

Now where have you heard this line, any guesses? Think back to the early 80's: This line was quoted by "FACE" in the "A TEAM". Ah happy memories, I still remember this like it was yesterday. Have a gr8 God blessed day Dr O and family. Never forget family. God and family is what counts the most.

      Felix Gato Ivan’s video was ok until he spliced the wiring harness instead of replacing the switch he smoked with the test light. I’m just not ok with doing that, if it’s my mistake than it’s my responsibility to fix my mistake at my expense and I have made mistakes that I’ve paid for in time and/or money. I’ve watched several different repair videos, some good and some bad but based on my own experience with 45 years starting out in automotive and then as an aircraft mechanic/pilot it’s my personal opinion that Eric is extremely good at what he does with a good attitude towards customer care.

      They all had problems with the boards. Even my '79 pickup had trouble with the board, and it was a complete different design. The wiper motors were all the same back then, to make it a delay system the on-off switch was changed to one with a rotary switch in it so the delay could be adjusted and the board was in a separate module that was plugged in between the main wiper harness and that new switch and then tucked up under the dash.
      Edit: I've had board trouble with almost every board after that with the exception of my 2007 Silverado.

      A high school computer instructor told us to "think like a computer" and walk through our programs in our heads, making sure to understand what each step was trying to do. With wiring and logic circuits it's the same challenge: think like an electron flowing through the wiring. Where does it start, where it goes on its journey, and what it's supposed to do when it's done. Eric does a great job of using the diagrams to think like the electron. Too many "technicians" lack this skill, and just fire up the Parts Cannon hoping a Super Wild A-- Guess will fix it. It doesn't help when the factory diagrams are wrong either.

    You are right. Teach yourself how the system works and when the system does not work right you will know how to test to find the reason its not working right.

    Well, THAT certainly would save some space over cantilever. NOW you're talkin' some REAL serious electronics there, Chris Day!!

    The 'flicker' at time=14:01 was your meter range changing to display 0.41K which is 410 ohms -- just above the 394 you previously saw. This is common if the measurement is at the transition from one range to another.

  • @benr.4238
    @benr.4238 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    14:00 The flickering looks like the scan tool just can't decide which unit to display in. It alternates between ohms and kiloohms. The value changes, but only barely and probably within the tolerance. 400 ohms appears to be the threshold that the scan tool uses to auto switch the display to kiloohms.
    Just a guess, I have zero experience with using any sort of automotive scan tool.

    I would say that almost anytime I have seen a wiper problem that 99% of the time it's the motor itself that is the problem. Those GM electrical schematics and flow charts are not what they used to be as far as accuracy. Part of the park circuit is in the motor itself, I think the contacts get cruddy in them. Good video. That car probably does not get driven enough.

    The "flicker" you saw at 14:00 was just the meter auto-ranging momentarily to Kohms, then it settled on ohms.

  • @billysmith6131
    @billysmith6131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice tracing and vales sheet. It gives you a good reference to start with. Although some of the Ohm values were a bit off from written to actual. But still, it gives you a point of reference to start from. Most bad vales will be WAY off if that is the problem. Nice way to follow your own set flow to check and see if it was the switch to the motor causing the glitches.

    Great video! I've run into some very unhelpful service info in the 14 years I've worked at Honda. It's usually good but sometimes it's like: check for 12v and ground at the ABS module, if you have it, replaced with known good ABS module. Is the problem fixed? No? Replace with known-good PCM. Thanks Honda I truly wanted to quote between 2500 and 4500$ for an out of warranty repair. Why don't you just tell me what one module should be saying to the other and I can scope it, thanks for nothing.
