@@Mes-ib7uo I agree. And while Haaland is a great out-and-out striker, he undeniably requires his teammates to make the play that leads to the final ball and is therefore more prone to go missing in matches where he's not being fed those crucial final passes. The number of goals he scores are undeniable, yes, but overall, he doesn't have the ability to 'carry' his team which is expected of Ballon d'Or winners I think.
I feel like if they asked pundits and retired players to vote it would be better, for me atleast. I'd choose Henry's or Zidane's vote over a journalist's vote any day.
I honestly don't know how you make it more objective, I thought maybe some kind of euro vision style poll from the population of each country (not allowed to vote for a player from your country) but it would just end up like Eurovision and full of political voting (French population voting for German players and vice versa or some such). I honestly don't know how to fix it, but having some random journalists voting is pants on head stupid.
I agree. Rodri 100% deserves the award, but he won't win because his face isn't on billboards and he's not doing underwear ads. It's also because he's not as flashy or as speedy as the others, but the way he dominates games and how effective he is, he deserves the award. When he doesn't I officially don't care about this PR award anymore.
Messi getting his 7th Ballon D'Or is the reason why I do not respect this award at all. Haaland could never play in FIFA WC because his national team is weak, which is not his fault.
I'd disagree, though. Norway are no powerhouses of the game, but Haaland has players like Odegaard (when fit) and Sorloth in the team. Norway should be able to at least seriously compete in the qualifying stages of major tournaments. What sold it for me was Norway's performance in the Euro 2024 qualifying group. They were abysmal. They did nothing against Spain, while Scotland beat them at home. There is no excuse for not making it at least a close race, but the top two teams were mathematically known with two games to go. That is unacceptable, coming from a nation that knew they had no extra chance through their Nations League spot. Spain, Scotland and Georgia had that advantage, but Norway knew they didn't. And they still fumbled. With the quality they possess, Norway should be at the same level as the likes of Austria, Switzerland, Türkyie, Poland and maybe even the Netherlands. I can assure you, if Haaland played the same way for Norway as he does for City, especially having Odegaard next to him to provide key passes, they would easily qualify for major tournaments. Don't forget that Norway missing the Euros means that, theoretically, they are at best the 25th best national team on the continent, and that is outrageous.
It lost it's credibility when it became purely a popularity contest with no standards. One year it's for individual performances with Ronaldo in 2014 but then another year like Modric in 17/18 it's for what you've won with your team? I also hate that in the Messi and Ronaldo era, people actually use the argument that because XYZ player didn't win the ballon dor, then they aren't better than players that have won it BEFORE and AFTER the Messi/Ronaldo era. You seriously can't tell me that Benzema is better than Suarez because he has a ballon dor and Suarez doesn't, but people actually argue like that nowadays, it's insane.
@@tleey_ what? Ronaldo won the ballon dor in 2014? I’m saying he won it for something that Haaland lost last year. And Neuer lost that year despite him and Messi having the exact same year with the World Cup wins and Messi wins it. It’s not consistent
I think nobody cares anymore because it isn’t about who was the best player anymore, but who made the greatest story this year (basically who has the biggest pr). Also the award is way too subjective and every year they change what matters most to fit their favorite player. I love Modric, but giving him the ballon dor was crazy if you compare it to all other years. It was basically voters fatigue. If Iniesta would have won it, then the story would have been different, but the ballon dor isn’t consistent at all. Also the last Messi ballon dors devalued the trophy a lot. I’m not a Messi hater, I think he’s the goat, but people really gave him one or two too much just because they love him so much.
Its always been biased toward wc performance, its not like its smth new that happend cuz messi won it, look at ronaldo nazario in 2002 he barely even played for his club cuz he was injured all the time, or look at canavaro in 2006 his club was even under investigation for match fixing and eventually stripped of serie a title n got relegated, both guys won it only cause of the world cup, im sure if u look back in the past theres lots of other cases too

Its a popularity contest that people vote for their favourite regardless of how its actually gone. They add trophies into it, meaning someone who gets relegated scoring 150 goals will never win it. Its a bullshit award nowadays. If theyre serious about it, make a category for each position, goalie defender, etc, and dont allow trophies added to the discussion.
I don't understand why it even matters why the amount of team trophies you win matter, imo it shouldn't matter at all and it should be based purely on individual performances
Any award that requires voting should be taken with a grain of salt. Here in the states, the race for the MLS MVP Award was exciting last year in the final stretch when we all realized Denis Bouanga and Lucho Acosta were really the only guys fighting for it and it literally came down to the wire. A lot of us thought Bouanga had done enough, but Acosta won it and there was no real argument, he had one hell of a year. But coming into this year, we all knew Messi had won it before he even played a single minute... and sure enough, at the season's end, he seems like the favorite to win it despite having only played like 17 games I believe, which would be exactly half the games in a season. Don't get me wrong, he's clearly the best player in the league, but when you missed half the games in a season and your teammate Luis Suarez is competing for the Golden Boot award while you're gone, how could you be considered the "Most Valuable Player" in the league when your team did just fine without you? And for the record, for those who don't know, the "most valuable" part of the award isn't just relative to the league, it's mostly relative to your team. Meaning, when you take Acosta out of Cincinnati, the team struggles, when you take Evander out of Portland, the team struggles, when you take Bouanga out of LAFC, the team struggles. When you take Messi out of Miami, nothing really changes, Suarez just puts the team on his back. But again, it's based on voting, so no one else ever really had a chance. P.S. If Messi wasn't in the league, this would've been an all-time race between Bouanga and Acosta again, plus Cucho Hernandez, Luis Suarez, Evander, and maybe even Christian Benteke. But like I said, everyone knew before the season even started that Messi was the 2024 MLS MVP.
Lets be honest if the Balon Dor was actually about the best player every year Messi and Ronaldo would have maybe 3 or 4 each not 13 combined Balon Dors.

Messi had 41 goals in 2021. If you look at his heat map his average position on the pitch was deeper than de bruyne and almost as deep as Modric that season. He scored 41 goals and 17 assists from midfield. He was absolutely the best player that season
Robert scored most goals ever in Bundesliga that season. He also won the treble and the year before while also dominating Barca 8-2. Coincidentally the Striker of year award was created. They knew if Robert didn’t leave without any award it would be seen as a sham.
exactly, people 'forget' this. Lewa shouldve easily won the award in 2020, IMO they should still give him it uncontested now. For 2021 it was a toss of a coin between Messi and Lewa, there was no other realistic winner. I think if the 2020 award had been given to Lewa as normal, the whinging against Messi winning in 2021 would be pretty non existent.
My issue with the award is that its a bunch of journalists which as you pointed out their voting is kinda wonky some times. One year Kazakhstan voted Mason Mount as the 2nd best player. Fabrizio announcing the winner twice both months before the actual event ruins it too because why would i watch when the suprise is gone. My player of the year isnt even in contention and thats Dani Carvajal. Helped Madrid win La Liga, scored the first goal in the UCL final and had a solid euros which he won.
When Real Madrid and Barcelona started paying voters to vote for their players it ruined the award and showed a clear bias to players who play for these clubs. It looks like Vincius will win this year when he is the least deserving of their 3 candidates because they Real Madrid have paid for him to win and the voters don’t want to give the award to an English player or a player based in England
Nobody cared about the balon dor before it became a contest between Ronaldo and Messi, it was hyped up because of that contest, that captured social media and marketing attention, Before their domination it was an award that you read about the next day, even 2001 when Michael Owen won, it didn't catch any attention within British media,
@@Mezzala9 Would have been an accurate comment 30 years ago. I still agree in essence but let's be honest, defenders can't hardly touch attackers today without conceding fouls. Its a popularity contest, the day i saw the portuguese manager voting for bernardo silva as favorite i gave up. The methodology and process need a complete overhaul. I would even prefer to give an algorithm a 60% weight + 30 for voting
Messi won the ballon dor because it was based on the 22/23 season where he played in europe for psg. So you saying he won ballon dor while palying in the US is completely false. You also mentioned he won the ballon dor one month into voting? Bro what are you saying? The period journalists were asked to vote on was from august 2022 to july 2023. Voting started in September 2023. Halland and messi both had 60+ GA for club and country. They both won their domestic league and cup. The difference came down to the last trophy they won CL and WC, and when you compared their perfomances in those, you can easily see why messi came out on top. Its not that hard.
After Lewandowski and then Haaland were robbed by Messi I decided the award is just a sham popularity contest. Yeah, Messi is gone now but this year there is no standout that deserves it more than the others. Prob going to be Vinni because people are racist towards him.
Are you seriously trying to suggest that the most followed person on Instagram and played for Real Madrid (the most popular club in the world) didn't have the so called PR? You sound like a deluded Twitter style fanboy.

He‘s a striker so his first season where he basically breaks every record there is to brake over a whole year at Man City should definitely give him the edge over just winning the World Cup that os done very quick in under a month.
Messi won the ballon dor for his 22/23 season, so him playing at Inter Miami doesnt count into it. Also comparing world cup to world cup qualifier games is rediculous.
Never cares too much about it, that said I did feel a bit sorry when my Egyptian friends were all praying for Salah to win it and Messi ended up winning
I never put any value on awards that are based on opinions rather than stats regardless, but I never understood why people cared so much about an award that reflect the opinions of people who don't actually know Football as well as we might think.
The Ballon d'or has always been meaningless, it doesn't mean the best player in the world over the last 12 months, it's just a popularity contest. Football is a team sport there are 22 guys in that dressing room
The problem isn't that we don't have the epic Messi/CR7 era anymore, but that it was apparent in that time that everyone of the voters neglected everything besides them. It's a better narrative for them to sell. There were a couple of questionable awards in that time on both sides.
If Kane won just 1 major trophy this year he would of been the clearly the favourite, scored the most in the ucl, top 5 leagues and euros, but bayern fumbled at the final maragains this year and england had a final
The reason vini jr plays well for Real Madrid is because of the referees. He can score goals with his hands in madrid, but he cannot do the same for Brazil. If you think Rodri's performance for both Spain and city can win him the ballon d'or then that can be said for Lionel Messi and erling haaland last season as well.
Initially I thought of it as an interesting topic. But after I realised that only the journalists are involved in the decision, it's not worth it anymore. Also if we're talking about trophies only, Julian Alvarez had won pretty much all of it too in a single season. The last Messi win for belon dor was so forced imo.
the ballon d'or lost credibility back in 2016 when Ronaldo won it over Suarez lol Suarez 15/16: 83 G/A, + La liga, copa del rey, spanish supercup, club world cup he had far better stats then ronaldo across the board but they gave it to ronaldo purely because of the ucl and the euros where he wasn't even the best player of the tournament. ironically Ronaldo won the 2013 ballon d'or over Ribery for that exact reason of having better stats despite being trophyless for the whole season, but when Suarez has much better stats and actually wins trophies it doesn't count 💀 the robbery no one talks about to make it even worse real madrid should have never even won the ucl cause they scored an offside goal in the final
I reckon the Balon D'or would matter if it was actually independent but when youve got players like Salah who arent even nominated because the team he played in overall didnt win anything significant or players who are nominated purely because theyre young and aesthetically pleasing it loses its credibility. If it wasnt so biased and genuinely had candidates that made you think and wonder "you know what these 2 players theyre so close to each other but this one is just slightly better bexause theyve been doing it on a consistent basis" or something then I think people would take it seriously. Players like Mbappe even if theyre having seasons like he is currently will still get nominated over players who should of deserved it because they dont wear the white shirt and play in La Liga
I hate everything about Man City, and even I agree that Rodri is unquestionably the winner. Both club and country were nearly unstoppable when he was on the field.
i agree real madrid players have insane pr most are not even that good or are massivly overrated (ramos, carvajal, casemiro ect) but vini was objectively the best
Wasn’t even top 2 best player in the prem last season and won an undeserved POTT in the euros which should’ve gone to olmo, he didn’t put out a standout performance and just had a similar performance to kante in that tournament
Whilst the average footballer is perhaps better nowadays, the ceiling for top superstars is absolutely buns. And thats minus Ronaldo/Messi or stats. Personally, i do not find any one player excelling at anything supremely better than their competitors. Its just meh. Not to mention PR bias.
Ronaldo Nazario won a Ballon d'Or just for winning a World Cup, that Messi won the World Cup and they give him a Ballon d'Or doesn't seem very strange to me, really.
Its just a vote for which one of Barca or Real is better. Saleh, Lewandowski, De Bruyne, Rodri, Haaland have all had amazing seasons but didn't play in the right league.
After the age of Messi and Ronaldo, I don't think anyone who wins Ballon d'Or afterwards, at least for the next few years, will escape the comparison vs those two giants. So I agree with you; Ballon d'Or has lost its prestige through no fault of its own. For now.
My Guess is mostly 2 1. Being the most obvious one being that it got Leaked (if the leak is true of course) which takes away a lot of the hype from the Award 2. Being that everyone who is a favorite (Rodri,Bellingham,Vinicius and Lautaro) Dont feel worthy of winning a Ballon dor because of how high Messi and Ronaldo Set the Standard for Winning a Ballon Dor
It looks like most people stopped caring when the player THEY liked didn’t win ….. Maybe just maybe we shouldn’t put much stock in award ceremonies in general?

imo lautaro martinez should win the ballon d'or this year as he has won everything with inter including top serie a goal scorer apart from the cl and also argentina won the copa because of him, as if you look back at the games he scored pretty much every important match winning goal for them to win it whilst messi and others were either under performing or injured
Only problem is he was whack in the champions league due to his poor goal scoring numbers and missed a penalty in the shootout vs Atletico Madrid and went on like a 9 goal scoring drought near the end of the serie A season leaving his teammates to finish off the job for him
It’s weird with Rodri tho because I feel like he’ll only win it just off the euros tbh. Like imagine if he didn’t win the euros with Spain. I feel like nobody would put him in for winning it over Vini at all.
Players don't care about the sport or the club...they just want the money and the status...they are more instagram models than athletes...so who cares about an award that goes to the currently most popular player?
Everyone was wondering what would happen to the ballon d'or after Messi or Ronaldo. To be honest, most people cared about it just because it would show who is better and who has more ballon d'ors.
They should just get rid of it and use it by positions. The criteria for winning needs a revamp. You could have a stellar season but since you didn't win a trophy or you are born in the wrong country determining who wins is ridiculous.
Messi was in Ligue 1 until the summer of 2023, the time that counts for the ballon dor. World cup was in that timestamp. So his mls start doesnt count for the ballon dor 2023.
This is going to be the worst Ballon dor in history.they have some of the most predictable top 3 ever.there is Jude bellingham, vini Jr and others.they have never achieved anything with their countries and yet won the ucl which was obvious so it is just ridiculous to call this one a Ballon for because it feels like it was a waste of gold used to make the trophy if it is predictable.i am disappointed with it and the 2025 Ballon for must be good for it to stay important and relevant.the top three's international tournament were boring and just ridiculous
nah nothing can beat 2001 and 2003 ballon d'ors that owen and nedved robberies are so much worse than even vini jr winning it, even wirtz this year has a better case on why he should win the 2024 ballon d'or than owen and nedved did in their wins
Bro France football should've awarded him his 2020 Ballon D’Or period, Messi deserves his 2021 Ballon D'Or. Don't come here with emotions and downplay Messi's achievement because they canceled the 2020 award ceremony, that's not Messi's problem.
People tend to make opinions about the ballon d'or by looking at stats more than watching the actual sport. If you look at stats in 2023, yes Haaland had more goals and trophies for club but watching the actual game it was clear that he was very dependent on the service of KDB, Silva, Foden, Rodri, etc. Which isn't a bad thing at all, they still won the treble. But compare that to a guy who carried his team with motm performances in each knockout round in the wc including the semi finals and the finals, leading his team in player ratings, goals, assists, and essentially every attacking aspect of the game, not just goal scoring. Plus, before the world cup, most of the Argentina players weren't household names and their market value was only around 750 million euros (mostly made up of messi and di maria), wheras haaland's teammates are almost all world class players who've known success before he got on the team, and those were the guys who had better performances in semi finals and finals (especially foden and rodri in the CL final). Haaland was the best striker in 2023, which is why he won the golden boot and european golden shoe. Man city had the most trophies, which is why they won team of the year. But when you look for the most clutch players in the most important tournament in the history of sports and see someone dominate in the nature that Messi did, it's not hard to see why people consider him to be the best player in the world that season. WC winner, golden ball winner, silver boot winner, with 5/7 motm awards. He's special.
It lost credibility in my opinion when they started leaking the top 5 player lists submitted by some of the voting journalists… and you’re like “these are the morons who are deciding who gets the biggest individual award in football?”
I can't take that joke of an award serious anymore. They always ignore the best defence players for the flashy attackers and always have other standarts depending on how they want to measure who gets the award. Sometimes a world cup mean nothing (Germany 2014) and sometimes it means everything (Messi for the shit Quatar WC titel). Players like Lahm, Suarez, van Dijk, Mascherano, Lewandowksi or Henry never got one for sometimes very, very shady reasons, but Messi and Ronaldo got them randomly by default.
The world cup has always had huge influence on the Balon Dor. That's why it shouldn't be a shock that Messi won it last year. With the World Cup performance he had. Now i definetely agree that Lewandowski should have won in 2021. I'm not saying anything on that. But his Balon Dor was 100% deserved imo.
Honestly I don't have an issue with most of the voting results. I just don't enjoy how much importance is placed on it and how it defines the sole best player for some people because every journalist has different views on the sport no matter their votes.
After I saw a Journo put Mount in his top 5 in 2021 ahead of Lewandowski based on FIFA stats is when I stopped giving a shit. Before I was already losing interest but that was the final nail in the coffin.
The nail in the coffin for the Ballon d’or was when Fabrizio started leaking the winners.

Then theyll just vote for their friends anyway, its not like theyre not biased, heck most of them are pals with the ppl playing😂
You would be surprised by how many ex or current pro players who dont watch nor follow football games and news.
Isn't that what the uefa best player is for?

Yea people just started noticing it
My problem with Ballon D'or is it almost NEVER rewards goalkeepers or defenders. Personally, it should not be given to someone who already won it.

I think norway is better than poland though
That’s the main issue for me too
I'd disagree, though.
There were teams weaker than Norway that made it to the WC tho

Its always been biased toward wc performance, its not like its smth new that happend cuz messi won it, look at ronaldo nazario in 2002 he barely even played for his club cuz he was injured all the time, or look at canavaro in 2006 his club was even under investigation for match fixing and eventually stripped of serie a title n got relegated, both guys won it only cause of the world cup, im sure if u look back in the past theres lots of other cases too

messi won in 2022 bcz he had a crazy stat, 7 goals and 3 assists in just 7 games. i dont think i have ever EVER seen a player since any world cup to be this so good. he litreally had 1.4 contribution per match. 1 goal per match. he won golden ball and was clearly one of the best in the tournament. and he also got individual awards after that [FIFA The Best]
carvajal didnt even win any individual award like EUROS POTT, UCL POTS. he only won UCL final man of the match. but still he is seen as someone who deserves it. people have lost their mind and whoever is saying carvajal deserves it, they dont watch football, they watch highlights and shorts.
by that logic of winning more trophies = ballon d'or nominate, alvarez clearly deserved 2023 ballon d'or. he won UCL,Club world cup, UEFA Super Cup, PL,World Cup, FA Cup. he did 5 trophies with city [almost 6 if arsenal weren't there] and won world cup. also he scored decent amount of goals for a person who isn't first choice striker. he also contributed in important matches both for argentina [in croatia game, he had all contributions for argentina and in many games he contributed] and for man city [despite pep only choosing haaland as his main choice].
hence, carvajal dont deserve to be suggested. simple as that.

Ballon d'Or was always about an offensive player from the World Cup/European Championship winner of alternatively Messi/CR7.

Because attacking players are the most talented players. It's harder to be proactive than reactive like a defender.
@@Mezzala9 Would have been an accurate comment 30 years ago. I still agree in essence but let's be honest, defenders can't hardly touch attackers today without conceding fouls. Neuer should have von the Ballon D'or in 2014 (or at least once)
He was at his peak and he changed the way EVERY goalkeeper has to play now.
The last Messi win for belon dor was so forced imo.
the ballon d'or lost credibility back in 2016 when Ronaldo won it over Suarez lol
Suarez 15/16: 83 G/A, + La liga, copa del rey, spanish supercup, club world cup
he had far better stats then ronaldo across the board but they gave it to ronaldo purely because of the ucl and the euros where he wasn't even the best player of the tournament.
ironically Ronaldo won the 2013 ballon d'or over Ribery for that exact reason of having better stats despite being trophyless for the whole season, but when Suarez has much better stats and actually wins trophies it doesn't count 💀 the robbery no one talks about
to make it even worse real madrid should have never even won the ucl cause they scored an offside goal in the final
Rodri should win it. But people will moan because a defensive midfielder wins it.
He earns though
It's an award for who had the best year in football (including personal and collective achievements), not who has the most ability.
Rodri should be a no brainer. Vini Jr winning it would be down to Madrids PR
I hate everything about Man City, and even I agree that Rodri is unquestionably the winner. Both club and country were nearly unstoppable when he was on the field.

Ronaldo Nazario won a Ballon d'Or just for winning a World Cup, that Messi won the World Cup and they give him a Ballon d'Or doesn't seem very strange to me, really.
Which was equally as stupid
Ballon D´or lost its credibility in 2010 when Messi won it for from Sneijder or Iniesta. He didnt even score a singel goal at the world cup that year.
If you actually watch football, you'd know why Messi won it. Absolutely clear as day.
For now.
My Guess is mostly 2
1. Being the most obvious one being that it got Leaked (if the leak is true of course) which takes away a lot of the hype from the Award
2. Being that everyone who is a favorite (Rodri,Bellingham,Vinicius and Lautaro) Dont feel worthy of winning a Ballon dor because of how high Messi and Ronaldo Set the Standard for Winning a Ballon Dor
It looks like most people stopped caring when the player THEY liked didn’t win …..

imo lautaro martinez should win the ballon d'or this year as he has won everything with inter including top serie a goal scorer apart from the cl and also argentina won the copa because of him, as if you look back at the games he scored pretty much every important match winning goal for them to win it whilst messi and others were either under performing or injured
Indeed, he gets overlooked soooo much
He should be top 5 atleast, maybe even top 3 imo
"He has won everything" being the argument is why things went down the drain to start with.
Only problem is he was whack in the champions league due to his poor goal scoring numbers and missed a penalty in the shootout vs Atletico Madrid and went on like a 9 goal scoring drought near the end of the serie A season leaving his teammates to finish off the job for him
Why is it that no one really cares anymore for a lot of things
It’s weird with Rodri tho because I feel like he’ll only win it just off the euros tbh. Like imagine if he didn’t win the euros with Spain. I feel like nobody would put him in for winning it over Vini at all.
Players don't care about the sport or the club...they just want the money and the status...they are more instagram models than athletes...so who cares about an award that goes to the currently most popular player?

@@hallo23779 could've agreed more
The jab on Bentler the goat 😂😂😂😂😂
3:34 he was in psg? bro had 38/25 GA (63) vs haaland's 56/10 GA (66). he also won the world cup, ligue 1 & trophee des champions
I know there are other awards, but I'd love one that's more a meritocracy and not driven by talent + who's marketable
In an ideal world it would be Rodri, Vini Jr, Bellingham, but we all know it's a popularity contest so it's gonna be Vini Jr, Bellingham, Haaland.
0:01 *i don’t Care about anybody opinions about who Wins the Ballon d or , unless you were a Professional Player Like VIZEH*
