I got diagnosed with this about 3 years ago through testing. It was by someone very qualified and very thorough. I do have anxiety as well. I was diagnosed with anxiety well before the communication disorder. I often make jokes that other people don't understand because I think if I get the joke, they will get it too. It is often a reference that is random. Then I get annoyed when they don't get it. Yet if other people do something like that, I would react the same way they do. It's also easier for me to concentrate on what I am saying if I am not looking at the person I'm talking to. I wonder if part of it is shame because of the anxiety. I also have ADHD. My writing ability is above average. I need to look into speech therapy.

How old are you both if I may ask. How has this impacted your overall academic achievements? Im a father of a six years old with this disorder. Any suggestions on how to introduce simple math to him. Best regards.

@@doncressco I am 34. I also have ADHD. Math has been hard for me too. I do better with concrete concepts. I think I remember in 2nd grade having trouble with long division though I can't remember why. It may have been that there were a lot of steps involved in solving the problem. For simple math, the only thing I can think of is make it fun and also repetition. I know there are times when jokes people make confuse the heck out of me. People would often say to me "Why do you have to be so literal?" and I would tell them they had a straight face when you said it how else am I to take it. My dad has said before that when he would give me directions for something, he would need to break it down in smaller pieces. I remember him saying to me a lot when I was growing up "Do I need to spell it out for you?" But not in a nice way. It was more like "How do you not get this? Isn't it obvious?"

Katie , I’m not qualified to answer: just as people close their eyes to get more out of music and blind develop better hearing, suppose some close their eyes sometimes to put more of their brains into the verbal while sacrificing the non-verbal information. This could be detrimental or helpful especially as complexity increases. The anxiety you mention may occupy areas for processing to scan the area for perceived threats?
It might help knowing it isn’t their fault for not getting an inside joke. You might further examine the reason for your annoyance. If it was me would feel embarrassed perhaps annoyed with myself.

Hey, i have a friend that struggles a lot with communication. He’s mostly non verbal with me (his best friend) and others, i often ask him what he’s thinking about when he goes non verbal and he only says “just random stuff”. He doesn’t have trouble identifying context and recognizing basic social cues but doesn’t know how to put his feelings and/or thoughts into words. For example, when he sees his therapist, he’s mostly non verbal and can’t think of what to say even though he has a lot of stuff going on in his life (it’s not that he doesn’t trust the therapist). When making a presentation he can’t figure out what to put on the slides and struggles when making a text to read from when presenting. When he has problems with his parents he never organizes his thoughts/feelings and expresses them towards his parents so that they know properly what’s bothering him. If anyone here recognizes this behavior and can put a name to it please do, he struggles a LOT with communication but neither he or his parents are researching on what could be causing it. Having a clue of which disorder it might be would already be a big step forward. Thank you :)

I was re-diagnosed with this condition a few years ago. Back in 2007, I was diagnosed with Aspergers.

Looking back at my life, I’m fully convinced that I actually have Social Communication Disorder. I went to a psychiatrist in 2017 after having an emotional breakdown. She suspected SCD, but wanted to rule out ASD. So she sent me to a psychologist that deals with ASD, who in fact diagnosed me as ASD. I was beyond pissed with the result. I told her I think she was wrong and I was going to seek a second opinion. She said if I do, I would get the same result. I spent the next eight months going to her and she focused more on the ASD than anything else. She did not help me at all with why I sought therapy in the first place (anxiety and depression). I even called her out on it, but she still continued with the ASD. When I stopped seeing her, I went back to the psychiatrist and told her I don’t want to see her anymore. I no longer see that doctor as well; she too piggybacked the whatever the ASD doctor said.
Ive spent the last two years of my life in therapy intending to get help on one thing. But instead got another thing that didn’t make me feel any better at all. In fact, I feel worse than before. Despite what the ASD doctor said, I’m going to seek a second opinion and find the right diagnosis for ME. If it is SCD 🤞🏻and I start to feel much better about myself, then I KNOW I got the right diagnosis.

Are the communication problems of someone with scd similar to those of someone with asd? Is it cause by an impairement of the cognitive empathy?
