I swear Zeon had 2 R&D teams for the one year war. The official military team who made functional equipment, and the team of monkeys who have been exposed to nothing but super robot anime. The team of monkeys were fired post OYW but some have snuck into the official military of both Zeon and Earth Federation.
Well look at Nazi Germany teams which made paper stuff like beyond the H41 battleships upto H44, Ratte, etc. Which never any serious considerations or actual off the board. Complete jokes or just completely wild. Then stuff like the Type XX U boats, Panzer IV, MG43, Maus, V1 rockets (Sure latter two was ineffective especially the former which would of been another of the elephants like the Tigers were. The latter of the two however did land one of the concepts of the designers to NASA which led to the Saturn V rocket. Which nobody would say failed in it's mission), etc. Stuff like that direct opposite of the former in that earlier sentence (except the Maus imo). Efficient, on par, and maybe in some instances better than the Allied ones are armed with.
This and the Zeon ones is why engineers should be a showing that going too far means you would lost the war. Short leashes and good enough should be the mentally which worked for Allies as they Won. Which the Fed did also like the Allies and won too. The two (Zeon and Nazi Germany) being simlair wouldn't be a ironic either as it probably based off the former for the Zeon. Which was sending that kind of message from the Gundam show.
Funny you should mention monkeys, considering that, at some point in the One Year War, somebody designed a mobile suit for literal newtype chimpanzees. The MS-06MS Barbus is a mobile suit which is basically a Zaku with arms in place of the usual legs and a generator for its four beam rifles, and apparently it worked. It was completely forgotten for decades, but it was still a surprisingly capable unit considering that it missed out on decades of mobile suit advancement.

I remember reading a parody of the Zakrello where Kycilia introduces it to Char and Char's reaction was basically the same as mine when I first discovered its existence. Its like the "Hunt down the freeman" of Zeon MS.

the zakrello looks like it belongs more in a super-robot series in my opinion.
well gundam kinda was the first that break mold its still try to founding their identitty as "realistic" mecha.

I'll admit, at first glance I read Brawrello as BRAWLrello and was disappointed its scythe arms weren't replaced by giant, novelty boxing gloves.
It wouldn't make it look any more ridiculous than it already does, but it really should have cartoony, spring-loaded fists.

The MAN-00X’s name is written in Japanese as Bachizaado (バチザード) so writing and pronouncing it as “Bartizard” in English made the most sense to me. Afaik, this obscure machine has never received an official romanized spelling.

I don't know if this means something, but "Bachizaado" has similar pronounce to "batizado" (Christening ceremony in portuguese).
Looks more like it should be underwater.
When I first saw it, I just assumed it was an underwater assault machine made to kill subs and aircraft carriers.

I think that it actually was intended to work underwater. However, as the Zeon forces escaped back to space, they used a procedure I call "reverse Grublo", adapting a water MA into a space one.

I sear to the Omnissiah, that thing is a spawn of the DG Cells that escaped Future Century and landed in Zeon's armory just to get mass-produced and start the nightmare all over again

As dumb as the design of Zakrello is, I myself like the design of this Mobile Armor. For some reason, I find some appeal to it's design. Wish this MA has a Model Kit.

I have this guy, it scales well with the Assault Kingdom series of candy toys even though it looks out of place next to them. It's actually a really good kit for its time and perfectly captures its goofy charm.
If you want, there's also the Haropla Zakrello, which is a Haro cosplaying as a Zakrello
There is 1/250 scale kit of Zakrello. It got reissued.
This machine is what makes me ask: "Why"?
And that's why you'll never fit in with the Zeon boys. Feddie betas ask why.

As super late as my comment is here’s how I’d reply:
Me: it’s a little thing called our budget and your wasting it on this crap when we got these things called Gelgoogs and Rick Doms that are PROVEN tech
Zeon: we need something for our special space mages to use
Me: last I checked we got a ton of Zaku 1s and 2s hanging around and maybe some Goufs still use them instead of wasting resources and money building whole new stuff that MAY work, slap your space magic weapons on them
I love when theh take a goofy 60s mecha design and update it and make it look baddass/practical
The Braw Bro weapons aren't just wire-guided. They are power cables that transmit energy to the weapons.
There was also a mobile suit in Crossbone Dust that was more or less a Gabthley with chainsaw arms whose mobile armor mode turned into a zakrello
Really wish they would give the zakrello more screen time
I really loved those last two versions and really hope that Bandai eventually makes model kits of them (I'd love to try my hand at a kit bash of the two if it ever happens)
The Zakrello is really style over substance and that is saying quite a lot considering the various MS and MA Zeon had developed. Especially when you the much cheaper designed and easier to pilot Bigro with its claw arms, large missile tubes and mega particle cannon to.
The Zakrello doesn’t even remotely look like a Zeon military machine. It’s more so like a main unit for an alien mechanical swarm or a hive. Attacking in a massive invading force with overwhelming firepower and blades that can cut through any defensible outpost or structure. The Bartizard can be a tank focused evolution to the Zakrello while the Umgarna can be the more dangerous alpha machine leading large groups of Zakrellos at once.
That’s a pretty good idea actually.

As Super Robot-ish this design may be (most likely no thanks to IRL producers at the time still unable to get over Super Robot designs), I love how other media tries to explain how designs like this fit in Real Robot settings. Of course, they are still ridiculous, but at least they tried to explain.

Honestly, I really dig all of these Designs! If there was a Modelkit of the Brawrello, or that Space Snake lookin mf, I'd definitely buy em. Then again, they'd probs be PBandai.
I really love MS development videos, especially ones focused on the One Year War. As a hobby, I'm gathering information about my favorite Gundam time period (U.C. early years), and your videos on GM's and Zaku's have been incredibly insightful. This comment is not directly related to this video but I wanted to say I hope to see more videos of this type, and that is why I subscribed. Please keep up your amazing work.

In my school vr game the zakrello was unique mobile armour and had a different version in the game called the gigarello a unique version of zakrello that was a docking unit once dock with goalius or any other gundam frame units they become possessed like the gigarello take over the mobile suit controls

I think it's likely they wanted something 'toyable', a lot of the MA's seem to be in that vein of 'this would make a cool toy.'

This was NOT an episode of Development History I expected. But it was informative. I consider myself a pretty massive Gundam fan, having loved the series since I was a wee lad over 25 years ago. But I had no idea this machine had variations at all.

I, will never understand how they came up with some of these. They were unique that is for sure
Behind the scenes? It's because the design is toy-able most likely. A lot of the more odd designs are the way they are for the sake of merchandising. Which requires creative writing to justify them in-universe. But specifically the higher ups wanted the Gundam, White Base and affiliated MS to be suitably designed to be toys for younger viewers, hence the colours and blacky designs.
That, does explain absolutely everything I have wrong with the UC machine designs, fed style suits are pretty consistent and zeon style are more, this was meant for the same show right? Though I do love some of them
@@StevenKull Basically the higher ups did not give a damn about the bad guys for the most part. So the designers got to do whatever they wanted, and we got some of the most iconic bad-guy vehicles ever made thanks to that.
After the original, they realized that the merch money wasn't in toys aimed at really young kids, but older kids and teenagers with gunpla. Hence why everything after the OG is designed more complexly to make cool models.
At the same time, they didn't want to just totally retcon the original series, so they kept homage to it via the colours and other elements in the Gundams. But the OG gundam was designed with ~5 year olds in mind.
@@kauske zeta and ZZ has some nuts ones too, gaza c, barzam, Hamma-Hamma. The only thing weirder then the designs are the names haha
@@StevenKull The barzam is kind of toy-able, but most of the others seem too sharp and delicate for young kids compared to the chunky shape of the original gundam and white-base. White base even has externally manned turrets, as if they wanted to make it easy to sit action figures in them as a playset.

I am making a gundam hobbyist game and was looking to do some oddball NT mobile armor to test some newtype features against my NT MS post OYW but pre-zeta. The MAN-00X-2 Brawrello just may be the armor I need. Now, convincing my brother to fly it... that's a different story lol.

I did long suspect that the Zeon outsourced all their weapons and mecha development to toy manufacturers during the OYW. Their tanks and jets look like something out of a GI Joe cartoon, the entire amphibious MS line except for the Hygogg look like children’s mascots, and their MAs look like they belong in a completely different mecha anime altogether.

Could you please make a video on the standard Moebius mobile armor from Gundam SEED? I know it's just a grunt MA, and not very impressive even as a grunt, (it's basically the Cosmic Era's version of the Ball) but I really like the design. It looks like a fighter designed for space, rather than a jet fighter given rocket engines like the UC ones did.
