I have these for almost one year now, and I can fully agree that they put a smile on my face as well. They look so cool, fresh, they are very well made, and I love their sound. Personally, I call them "the eggs", cause of how they look. Great value for the money! :)
The only issue I've had with it is the connection between the 2. 3 times now the right speaker has gone out and I've had to clip the wire and strip a new section. Other than that, I love these guys. They work really well, pretty even on sound. Solid 9.5/10
You should tin the wires before you put them into the connectors. The clip connectors over time can crush bare wire and cause the connection to degrade.

Hi Sanjay! First off all thx for your immense effort - i found the videos very helpful. Now a question: I just ordered the speakers, but i wonder where to connect to the subwoofer. is it the "Extension"-output? Thx 4 Info!
Great question. You'll need to get a powered subwoofer that is meant to be used with studio monitors (get one that has 1/4" jacks or RCA inputs). You will route the output from your audio interface or computer to the subwoofer first and then the subwoofer will have outputs that route to the JBL 104s.

I'd only give them 3 out of 5 stars if I'm honest... First I tried the the big jack style leads but the amount of noise was unbearable , I have a Roland quad capture but even with the noise cancelling switched on there was still a noticeable hum , in the end I had to use the head phone socket output on my quad capture and this gives a good low noise floor, but if I then connect head phones to the speaker head phone socket I can hear a wierd noise in the background , which you can only hear when there is no other sound passing through the speakers... With this all put aside the actual sound quality of the speakers is pretty good and I can use them to make and listen to music.. so for the price I'm happy enough, just not blown away!

Hey Sanjay, enjoyed your review! I bought these out of impulse and now I'm not sure if I would even be able to use them with my Focusrite solo? Do you think I'll be able to connect it using a 2RCA to 2 RCA Male to Male cable only or do I need to upgrade my interface? Thanks! :)
If you can, yes. Otherwise you may not hear the sub frequencies of the kick drum. However, many people make great music even without a sub in their studio.
Thanks for another awesome video, Sanjay! Please, do you know if I would be able to plug them to the speakers outputs of my Behringer PPA 500 P.A. system? I ask because I live in a apartment and would like to use my PA to rehearse live performances at home but its speakers are just too large for me to use them at home and also the JBL 104 would add the headphones option - which the PPA 500 surprisingly does not offer. Thanks!!!
Hey Sanjay... I'm a big fan of yours... And I like ur review videos so much.... As they are quite specific & informative.. :) Well I'm here with a question.... Are they better than the Edifier R1280DB? 🤔
Yes, its difficult to find cheaper studio monitors. If you can't afford studio monitors, just use whatever you have. Just starting making music :-) Don't let anything stop you.
There are also JBL nano k series monitors and they're even more cheaper ! I didn't find any reviews of those on TH-cam, there are just 2 unboxing videos but not much detailed reviews on them ! It will be a great help to hear from you regarding those monitors, cause I'm thinking to buy a pair and I've never use studio monitors before !
Hey! Would you recommend them for listening to vinyl? Or are they only good for mixing? I can’t afford 300 dollar speakers for my record player, I’m looking to buy the JBl 104 pair. Would you?
I like everything, but a little concerned about the lows, it is that noticeable? I like to use low sounds, even if they are not the main thing. thanks!
Hi Sanjay! thank you for the amazing reviews and tutorial, great job. i'm a beginner in studio recording and i need some help to set-up my Juno DS88 with a pair of monitors and connect it to my macbook. can you suggest me a basic setup to hear the patterns and sounds of the JUno through the monitors and to record ? ( i thought about a pair of stereo monitors like the JBL or the Mackie CR5-XBT , one focusrite audio interface but i don't know which model has the possibility to connect in input the synth in stereo ). sorry for my confusion and thanks for any help.
You are a musician! How did you not hear that the sound is plastic and cheap. For example I tried connecting through an sound interface and directly to MacBook, same result - low quality sound. Power wires are poorly inserted into the monitor socket. I did not expect this quality from JBL. My wife and I are not musicians, but when we hooked up and listened this JBL, we both looked at each other, packed back , and sent it back. Your review is more like an advertisement than a true review.
Hey, San! Greetings from Argentina! Even tried the "JBL Control 1 Pro" pair, should I go for them instead the 104's? They have a 5.25in speaker instead. Should that guarantee a better monitoring experience? I am in doubt. Thanks! PS: Full specs jblpro.com/en/products/control-1-pro
@@SanjayC Thanks for your answer! I'll be looking forward for your budget monitor comparison too :-) Update: I just realized that the control one's are PASSIVE (facepalm), so I would need an AMP between the interface and the monitors. Not so budget option!
@@mauroribot @Sanjay C I still have my old beloved Control1, but never used them for my synth or computer. I am curious what would be the adequate Amp for these passive monitors!? Are there any good resources or infos about such a setup? BTW, I also own an old and probably the "cheapest" Harman/Kardon Hifi-Amp. Can it be used? Or does it have to be specific studio gear? Thanks in advance.
Honestly, any subwoofer will work. But make sure you get one that has the right inputs and outputs. You'll need RCA or 1/4 inch connections as opposed to just speaker wire connections. I have the Presonus T8 sub which works well. They are not cheap, but you'll be happy.
@@SanjayC nice! I'm thinking of adding the Presonus t8 as well. How do you recommend me to connect it? RCA to JBL 104 and XLR to T8? Greeting from Madrid San!

Interesting! I was thinking of these, and i might still. The JBL 308 8” are on sale right now for $149 each ($100 off each). I might go that route since i dont have a sub. Oh and i picked up the Native Instruments M32 and like it a lot. Looking at the Jam and Mashine as well for later. Though Roland’s TR8-S has me twitchin.
Hey Sanjay, I'm getting started in my musical journey and I've got myself the komplete kontrol m32 + mk mikro... I'll be heading to the store after work today. Not that I don't trust your opinion but the proof is in the pudding. They do kind of resemble computer speakers though in my opinion. Love the price point, wish they'd come out before I bought KRK's. ✌
Yeah, I hear you on the computer speakers thing. That's what I thought they would sound like. Your KRKs may put out more bass. Keep that in mind. But these are nice and small.
Hello sir , thanks for the review, can you please tell me if I buy this, will it be necessary for me to buy a sub woofer ? And does this has no bass at-all ?? And typically i work on - lofi, shoegaze, math rock and some dreamy sounds, Let me know your thoughts
If you can add a sub then do it. In this size speaker it’s hard to get very low frequencies. However, many people make great music even without a sub in their studio.
Hey sanjay! Great review. May i know how an i connect this to my audient id 14. Are the cables required comes with the box or will i need sole extra cables ?
Thanks. Old video but I found a pari of these used in mint condition for 100.00 and wondering if it is possible to buy a subwoofer and have these and the subwoofer connected to my computer for video editing? IS there a simple way or even a way to have these and woofer connected through one 3.5 jack cable at the same time for my desktop computer (Mac) that only has 3.5 input?

Everyone says my mixes sound ok tho im always surprised cuz im using a bluetooth boombox but ... hey whatever works . That Fruity Soft Clipper works wonders 🤣🤣
Don't forget to test your mixes on other speakers (like in your car, your headphones, wherever). And if you can spend some money on decent headphones - I highly recommend the Beyerdynamic DT770 250 ohm.
You may have a tough time without a sub. Regular speakers just can't get the super low frequencies you'll need to hear. I know some trap producers use Yamaha HS5s - but they are not in this price range. Your best option is to look for something used. Even then you may have to spend a couple hundred more.

I'm not a sound producer or anything like that!! But I love to listen musics!! I listen to music almost all day long!! Should consider it or not?? Thank U🙂
Can I turn off startup sound in JBl 104?. its very annoying..... :(
Whats that?
Nice!!! Please sanjayc could you try the Artesia M200?
Sure, I'll look into it!
@@SanjayC thank you!
Grate vid Sanjay ! I’d love to see how those compare to the IK Multimedia iLoud Micro Monitors. The later are a little more expensive though
I’ve heard good things about the IKs. But the price is different. Also check out Presonus when you do your shopping around
Thanks! :)
The JBLs have both RCA and 1/4" inputs, so you should be fine.
Hi Sanjay. Would you recommend pairing a subwoofer as necessary if you're producing music like trance/techno/house?
Well I'm here with a question.... Are they better than the Edifier R1280DB? 🤔
I think JBL has a longer history than Edifier, so reputation is better, I guess. But I haven't tried the R1280DB
Hey can you tell me that should i buy these for music production purpose..
These are good for budget monitors. I would recommend them
@@SanjayC thank you sir😇
Hi bro IAM from Tamil Nadu
Super video bro nice video making and nice speaker..bro
But price so high..in low people..🙂
Yes, its difficult to find cheaper studio monitors. If you can't afford studio monitors, just use whatever you have. Just starting making music :-) Don't let anything stop you.
@@SanjayC hmm bro
@@mohanbalaji..9154 hey me too tamil
@@premixmpk7070 super bro are you from
There are also JBL nano k series monitors and they're even more cheaper !
Would you?
Yes, I actually would
@@SanjayC Thank you!
You mention they aren’t as portable as advertised. Do you recommend any small monitors that are able to use for travel?
I haven't found any that I really love. When I do, i'll recommend them
I like everything, but a little concerned about the lows, it is that noticeable?
The Focusrite 2i2 (2 inputs) will allow you to stereo input your synth :-)
Nice! Could you also review the JBL control 2p?
If you're mixing or producing music, the 104 may be better.
Wow I got the white ones before I even got to see this video. Glad I went with my gut.
I think the 5.25 speakers would be better because you'll have the better bass
@@SanjayC Thanks for your answer! I'll be looking forward for your budget monitor comparison too :-)
Update: I just realized that the control one's are PASSIVE (facepalm), so I would need an AMP between the interface and the monitors.
Thanks in advance.
hi sanjay . . . super
Thanks! :-)
Those looks really good
Yeah they do! Highly recommended
PreSonus Eris E3.5 2-Way Active Speakers vs JBL 104 studio monitors, which one is best for budget?
104 helps me hear the mids much better. So in would pick them.
Hello San!! I bought these a couple months ago and they are great. What can I add to my equipment for the low ends? (I like to make techno). Cheers!
I listened to the song, did you used sub hoofer to the bass? Nice song
Hi sanjay ,is this good for a home production
Yes, its actually good for home production.
Good one brother 🥰🙏👍
Any suggestions on audio interfaces sanjay?
You've come to the right place! Check it out th-cam.com/video/qqL-IYc4Rn0/w-d-xo.html
Hello Sanjay C! Great review. I own a expensive sub which can produce very accurate and deep low frequencies but what is the best way to hook the active sub with monitors? If you have any advice and or tips I highly appreciate it, thanks 🙏
Not sure what you mean. The best way to connect them would be by using balanced 1/4 cables. Is that what you mean?
Interesting! I was thinking of these, and i might still. The JBL 308 8” are on sale right now for $149 each ($100 off each). I might go that route since i dont have a sub. Oh and i picked up the Native Instruments M32 and like it a lot. Looking at the Jam and Mashine as well for later. Though Roland’s TR8-S has me twitchin.
Do you think that these would work for louder sounds? like a triple oscillator for example. Would they give me the sound/loudness i want?
Hey Sanjay, I'm getting started in my musical journey and I've got myself the komplete kontrol m32 + mk mikro... I have been using maschine as my DAW but was wondering if I should go for Ableton Standard or Logic Pro X... which would you recommend and which one would integrate best with my controllers?
Both would integrate in the same way with your controller. If you make beats for hip hop or edm, I recommend Ableton Live. That’s my choice.
@@SanjayC Thanks... okay cool I'll give Ableton a trial and see if I like it. Keep up the good vids and also please release that mk mikro tutorial beat you made on soundcloud... that was sick!
I’m looking to buy soon but I use a lot of bass. Do u recommend?
You won't get much bass out of these. You'll need a subwoofer. If you need to hear better bass, you should get a 5" speaker at least. See my recommendations here th-cam.com/video/adyZDVLOTTE/w-d-xo.html
I just bought some nice portable desktop studio monitors the presonus Eris 3.5 for 100 bucks they look and sound great I'm not really a fan of the look of these JBL's but to each it's own
I have the Presonus 4.5s. Love them too! Add a sub if you can...it'll make a big different to your speakers.
Sanjay C was looking at the 4.5s but was up sold to the 4 inch krk
@@geekindakitchen yea me too but I'm in a appartment and my desk space is limited so glad I went with the 3.5 I'm really blown away by the performance
MBF MBF true, space is a issue to consider when shopping
I'll be heading to the store after work today. Not that I don't trust your opinion but the proof is in the pudding. They do kind of resemble computer speakers though in my opinion. Love the price point, wish they'd come out before I bought KRK's. ✌
Yeah, I hear you on the computer speakers thing. That's what I thought they would sound like. Your KRKs may put out more bass. Keep that in mind. But these are nice and small.
@@SanjayC ... That's what I'm thinking too on the bass end.
Do these require any sort of acoustic treatment?
Hello sir , thanks for the review, can you please tell me if I buy this, will it be necessary for me to buy a sub woofer ? And does this has no bass at-all ?? And typically i work on - lofi, shoegaze, math rock and some dreamy sounds,
Let me know your thoughts
If you can add a sub then do it. In this size speaker it’s hard to get very low frequencies. However, many people make great music even without a sub in their studio.
@@SanjayC My budget is very tight, so..
Hey sanjay! Great review. May i know how an i connect this to my audient id 14. Are the cables required comes with the box or will i need sole extra cables ?
Would you say they are better option than Presonus eris 3.5 ?
Could you make a dedicated studio monitor review?
I'm working on it :-D
One question: do you connect these speaker to the Scarlett interface? If so, how? Thank you!
Yes you can. Just connect it with a cable from the output of the Scarlett to the input of these speakers.
They have balanced TRS inputs, the Scarlett interfaces have balanced TRS outputs, so I'd recommend using cables with TRS-Plugs on both ends :-)
@Sanjay C How can you add a subwoofer to these speakers? They dn't seem to have a sub out. Thanks
Can I use these JBLs with a synth workstation keyboard also?
What do you think about JBL 104 against the JBL 305p mkii duo setup?
The 305P will be better I think. But it’s more expensive. $150 for just one monitor.
@@SanjayC I'm in your fandom too...❤
A shame that JBL didn't include a thread on the bottom to mount them onto stands...
What cables do I need to use balanced mode? Can it be connected directly to the laptop in balanced mode or is something else needed?
Can i mix professionaly with this speaker
Hey man they are on sale for 70 !?! I LOVE JBL !! Got a small aparment set up in a Smallll bedroom where i make beats ... i keep hearing good stuff about em ... i wasn't a fan of the mackie cr4s how do you think there would do for me and my set up ? Oh my bad i subbed an hit the bell lol *
Hey, the JBL 104s are great. I was really surprised at the sound. I like them for mixing. But remember, with speakers this, you'll miss some low end. I love these with a subwoofer.
Sanjay C definitely appreciate the tips man . Not toooo pressed for big bass since i am in a small apartment lol dont want to annoy the neighbors more than i already do . But i think i will grab these ! Thanks
then you’ll be good with these.
Sanjay C 💯💯🙏 thanks man , you and a couple others def convinced me . I love JBL i have a couple bluetooth speakers and headphones from them i been making beats on them ... but now i want true studio speakers since ive been selling my beats i think its time to step it up lol .
How to connect JBL 104 to JBL LSR310S Mk II. Please explain or make a video.
What speakers do u recommend in this price range if I can’t get a sub ? I make a lot of trap music and that low end is crucial.
You may have a tough time without a sub. Regular speakers just can't get the super low frequencies you'll need to hear. I know some trap producers use Yamaha HS5s - but they are not in this price range. Your best option is to look for something used. Even then you may have to spend a couple hundred more.
