  • In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Jimmy Henry, an Interventional Pain Medicine doctor about life as an Interventional Pain Medicine specialist, education required to become one, typical day in the life, and tips for all!
    Founder of Midwest Spine & Pain, Dr. Henry specializes in Interventional Pain Medicine. Dr. Henry is double board certified in both Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) and in Pain Medicine through the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). He completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. He then went on to complete his fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at the ACGME accredited program at Temple University Hospital, where he gained excellent clinical and procedural training under the directorship of Dr. Frank Falco.
    Dr. Henry diagnoses and treats a variety of acute and chronic neuromusculoskeletal conditions, especially those involving the spine. His background in PM&R (or Physiatry) allows him to treat pain patients with a more holistic and comprehensive approach. He employs a multi-faceted treatment plan utilizing a combination of physical therapy, pharmacotherapy, and minimally-invasive spinal procedures to provide pain relief to his patients.
    He is a native of Chicago and received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Henry received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from Northwestern University.
    His clinical interests include Pain Medicine, Spine Medicine, Sports Medicine, Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and Neuromodulation Medicine. Dr. Henry is a fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) and a diplomate of the Amercian Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR). He is a member of the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), and International Neuromodulation Society (INS).

    Pain medicine is fascinating, especially with chronic pain conditions. Definitely something I wanna consider, especially if I go the PM&R Route.

    Hey Dr. Webb..
    I absolutely love your videos, and i have been following you really closely.. You're an inspiration sir..
    I had a request.. Can you please do one of these videos where you interview a neurologist?
    I'm a 2nd year med student from India and am in the middle of trying to decide where to go..

    I surely couldn’t handle being a pain intervention doctor. I’m putting my pain management doctor through hell right now because he cannot figure out what my problem is. Sent me to almost every kind of specialist you can think of MRI x-ray neurologist rheumatologist spine surgeon and everything comes up with zero diagnosis. Severe pain alternating from one upper thigh hip area to the other each day. Disabled at work close a business. Nobody has an answer and drugs aren’t even cutting the pain! Morphine, Percocet tramadol, forget it! Does nothing. I’m about to lose it mentally. Been over 3 years now. No injury. Just came on one day in ‘17.

    So, is whats the difference if you do an anesthesiology residency and then go into pain management (vs PM&R residency)? Does it really matter what residency you do if you want to do a pain management fellowship?

    • @antoniowebbmd
      @antoniowebbmd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think they are similar but maybe anesthesiology residents have more experience with giving meds, managing pain, epidurals,etc.

    • @MrFrankyGification
      @MrFrankyGification 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@antoniowebbmd PM&R is going to have more experience with neurological aspects and MSK conditions.
      They both train in US guided injections. It's somewhat easier for Anesthesia residents to get pain management fellowships than PM&R, but usually the difference is small.
      PM&R -> Pain Management is the typical route preferred by orthopedic offices seeking to hire pain physicians.

      So as Dr. Henry mentioned, he does a lot of epidurals (CESI, LESI, TESI, TFESI) nerve blocks, ablations, MBBs, and many other types of interventional procedures. Usually the anesthesiologist works on patients that need sedation. For example, the patient may wish to be sedated when having an epidural injection, which would be closely monitored by the anesthesiologist. However many patients have the injection without the sedation which would utilize local anesthesia instead of being fully sedated. Yes they are similar, but the anesthesiologist comes more in handy when dealing with patients who wish to be fully sedated.

    Gentlemen, I'm an M3, interested in ortho and gas. Interventional pain looks cool, the procedures look awesome...but, an anesthesiology attending told me you can't make decent money in chronic pain unless you do a lot of pills and injections. What say? I really wouldn't want to be doing pills and injections all the time.
