I just have to give a shout-out to Steve. If you haven’t joined his Patreon, you should consider it if you have the means. These two units were expertly serviced, and when the inevitable shipping bumps came up, he was right there by me to fix things up. They’re both working PERFECTLY. Going to finish Lunar on the Saturn on them! Thanks, Steve.

Thank you so much for your work in the CRT community and all your videos that help us learn a lot more on these TVs, which there is barely any information out there for us to fix our own sets

Here'e a dirty little secret with Sony CRTs. Whether it's a BVM, PVM, or KVM, it's the exact same CRT although they had different part numbers. The CRT's were graded in manufacturing. The best were used in the BVM series, the second best in the PVM, and the rest in the consumer KVM models. We had Sony BVM monitors in our VTR bridges (above the VTR) at a playout and satellite uplink facility I worked at. When the CRT's got old we replaced them with the consumer tubes. Worked fine as a VTR monitor was not color critical.

I would like some more info on the phosphor pitch though. That seems to vary between tubes.

Excellent content, I’ve really been trying to learn more about CRTs lately and your videos are incredibly informative. Thanks! I have a kv-20fs100 that I purchased new in 2003 that I have kept put up all of these years. I recently pulled it out and have been trying to tune it with the 240p test suite. I still haven’t gotten it right yet but I’m trying!

Was that disgusting peeling sound effect REALLY necessary, Steve?

Nice video, I also have a 8044Q sitting on my desk and, my god, when you plug in old consoles to RGB on it (Or playback DVDs using a PS2 via Component on it) it looks so freakin' good.

I want to find one of these kv8's just so I can throw a 450tvl tube from an 8044q in it

Great Job, Steve. Love these little quick hits. I wonder about the brightness and bloom of consumer sets vs the deeper contrasting of a professional monitor as well and why that’s the case. Liked on both my channels. - Sal

Really appreciate your videos. I have like 8 pvms myself but honestly I don’t know how to service or color correct them. Would you ever be interested in consultation?

Just picked up a 9044QM for a decent price. Sort of wanted a 9045QM but the 16:9 toggle isn't really a useful feature if you ask me. It's going to sit atop my 20M4E daisy-chained anyway.

    I’m intrigued to know…
When a CRT gets to this type of age… apart from the fact that all types of electronics, chips and capacitors can fail which I assume you know full well how to deal with...
Does the (not sure what to call it) electron guns deteriorate and can that type of thing be fixed?..
Basically I’m asking.. once a CRT is acquired by you... is there ever a situation where it can't be taken to a new state.. like out of the box display (ignoring aesthetics, scratches etc… would love to know..
Just started watching your channel a few months ago after seeing you on ZEZ’s channel.. really enjoy your work... big love bro.

Not anymore. This was rare to do when CRTs were the norm due to cost, skill, and equipment but the parts to repair a CRT are no longer made. You can do a "rejuvenation" (shock) on a CRT but that almost never works, especially on a Sony CRT. None of those can fix burn-in.

I've got a Sony Trinitron that just won't respond to the degausing coil (i.e. the discoloration won't go away). Do you have any recommendations of things to try or check, or is my tube just hosed?

My 14L3 emits a slightly sweet smell when it’s on. What could it be? Dust or some bad components?

i had a 13" commodore monitor, which are excellent.... and bottom line is that it's too small to be enjoyable playing retro games. It felt like i was playing a game on the neighbors TV while looking through his window. The perfect size for couch play is 27-37. I personally have 2 JVC D-Series (got them both free), a 32 and 36" and really love them. With friends, on the couch, a 36" is really worth it.

While these have great picture I just can’t do 8in screen. Honestly anything below 24” is just too small for me. I’ll happily stick with my 32” JVC with component 👌

I was comparing a sony wega 21'' with a pvm 14l2. It was the same thing, the consumer set was too bright.

1400$ for the two..... It makes it really tough to justify getting these, when a KVM1450D is like 20 bucks.
