You're not missing much, the interior is empty. It was never lived in and you're right, it's pretty active with security. I've heard stories of the groundskeeper showing up on an ATV holding a shotgun.
If you got inside you would see why the stricter security. A.H. vandals and graffiti jerks who just have to destroy everything. I was there back in 2006. Would love to see someone restore it.
I would guess that wealthy people buy these places and use them as a tax write off. We owned several properties and you can take a loss on them for seven years. However, you can claim maintenance and upkeep on a property as long as it's not your primary residence indefinitely.
