    There is nothing in the world like the medium of comics. It is the amalgam of three other tried and true mediums. The first is the movie storyboard, which merely panels out certain scenes to best shoot action shots or other situations of movement so that the cinematographer can best shoot his scenes. Then you have the novel, from which an author weaves his literate web by explaining everything that's going on from the set up of each scene, to the thoughts of the central characters, to the deep psychological meanings of the story, and also the moral of the story. Also thrown into the mix is artwork; this is the visual bonus of a comic book in that it provides a beautiful canvas for the storyboard & the novel to come together to give the reader a broader picture to enjoy. The best thing about great comic art is that it not only gives you something beautiful to look at, but also adds to the story by fleshing out the world the characters live in and also informs you of their moods. A comic book is able to tell a complete story in one 22-page read by giving you the scene setups, the monologue or dialogue of the character(s), and engulfs you in the beautifully drawn, painted or digitized world of the story itself. I will not always collect comic books, for that depends on one's income, but I will always enjoy reading them.

      Richard senses the influences of three of my favorite comic artists in Sam Kieth's art: Will Eisner, Robert Crumb & Berni Wrightson. Sam Kieth is my favorite comic artist, & now that the comparisons are made, I can see these influences, and the comparisons have added to my respect for Sam's artwork . Another reason why I absolutely love comic books!

    Love Sam Keith. And you're totally right that since like the Cliffhanger days there hasn't really been new artists that stand out. Everyone just looks the same now.

    Awesome to hear that you'll be doing your own book Rich! So much good work came out from MCP, I got my first Marvel inking gig doing a few pages on it. Sam's work is always inspirational!

    Love your Super Fun Sundays, and hear you talk your way through gorgeous art by extremely talented artists. I always learn about new artists that I never realize existed.
    I'd love to see you do a Super Fun Sunday on Enki Bilal one of these days.
    Tip: if you jump a page by accident like you did 03:43 you can always use the arrows on the keyboard instead of the mouse to navigate and go back a page.
    Thanks for these videos!

    I have a beautiful Kieth Wolverine poster from back in the day, the one where he's in costume crouching on the log with parts of the costume ripped up in those ribbons hanging down. I remember Rob Liefeld trying to do that same thing later on and at first I thought he was drawing the characters with the old stretchy telephone cables hanging off, ha. Kind of missed the mark. Big fan of Sam's work. I flipped thru the Maxx Aritst Edition a while back, there's some masterful stuff right there. Very cool. Nice vid, RIch. I'm adding that Alien book to the list 'o stuff to find out in the wild.

      I had the same poster when i was a kid i loved it...I've been trying to find a new one because i would like to frame it

      @allgoldproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanefitzgerald4493 I'd just keep checking E-Bay, one will pop up eventually. Thanks for reminding me that I need to get that poster laminated, it's been rolled up in a tube for a while now with some other vintage stuff. But yeah, I'm glad I held on to the Wolverine poster, that one still holds up. I gave away a Todd McFarlane Hulk one that I wish I could find too.

    • @shanefitzgerald4493
      @shanefitzgerald4493 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The one that's sideways long with the gray hulk ripping out of a building because if that's the one i had that one to I'm 40 been seriously collecting my whole life so we might be the same generation

    • @allgoldproductions
      @allgoldproductions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanefitzgerald4493 That's the one. 43 here and I bought both of those posters as they came out. I still have probably 50+ posters either hanging in my drawing room or in tubes in storage. The ones that didn't get laminated for the most part didn't make it. The Wolverine one was always hanging up though and I used a paper cutter and got rid of the pinholes around the outer edge and it's like new. I've been keeping an eye out for that Hulk poster for a long time. And the Mike Zeck Captain America/Wolverine poster too.

    Totally agree that there hasnt been too many new artists that stand out in recent days. Kind of worried what the scene is going to be like when the more recognizable artists of today retire. Been kind of absent from patreon in the past couple weeks, but I'm gonna have to check out the new artist video you did. On the flip side, I've been getting into manga a lot recently and theres a ton of awesome mangaka out there.

    I'm a HUGE Sam Kieth fan, but unfortunately, I'm NOT an artist. It's really great to get an artists' perspective page by page and panel by panel of Sam Kieth's work. I'm subscribing and sharing this vid in the Sam Kieth fan group on facebook. Thanks so much!

    Wow! How did I not know about Jeff Jones! That's what I love about this channel, writing down some of the references you through out, then looking them up. I always love learning about new artists and other artist's influences. Congrats on being an official storyteller now! I shared this video to a Facebook group called the Artcasters. 700+ member artists. Hope it helps. :)

    this is unrelated but, im trying find a good white to use for corrections. I have that Daler Rowney stuff and it's okay but it leaves a kind of rubbery texture that hasn't been idea for inking over and definitely not for pencils. I also use the Pentel correction pens which leaves a drier, more papery texture and it's better for working over, but I need something that I can use a brush with. any help is appreciated!

    Sam Keith's art always had a 70's hippy vibe to me. Kind of a more refined Robert Crumb style if it were in MAD Magazine.
    Edit: Holy crap! I made this comment while I was watching and BEFORE you said the same thing!
    How about Dale Keown next time?

    Great stuff.
    On the subject of SG Murphy- Do you thin he uses 3D in his work? I think he uses a lot for his vehicles and buildings and environments.
    Not saying its a bad thing and he makes it work really nicely.

    The villain is a guy named Cyber...he was a big Wolvie villain in the 90's who has adimantium arms. I used to pick up MCP every time my mom took me to the supermarket hahaha back in the good old days when comics were on the newstands and spinner racks. I don't even know if there could be a new Sam Kieth today, especially at the Big 2. It's a shame that comics have become so homogenized.

      I've been saying that for over 10 years sadly...the writing was on the wall in the early 2000's and has always been incredibly disappointing to me...how conservative most comic companies are in terms of styles they are willing to support.

    I bet Sam Keith's black and white stuff is easier to read than the color samples here. Feels like all the eye cues are black and white and the colors are distracting.
