wonderful to hear this piece played with some finesse, dynamics, and transparency and not the usual non-stop blasting.

No one can dislike radovan Vlatkovic at his best. don't worry, he performs the high E in the triple horn and still at the same level. Heard in his majestic presence

The horn on the left (First horn) Is a descant horn (Keyed in Bb/High F), Which is more manageable on the high notes (If you look at the score, Schumann had no problems giving the first horn a LOT of high Cs) The other is an Alexander 103, which is a German maker. It has the same tubing as any other double, but they do look a bit weird. If you get the chance to play one, do it. They are fantastic horns.

This recording alone sets Radovan far apart many other hornists. He chose his colleagues very precisely well for this collaboration.

The descant horn isn't used to "cheat," it's used so that he can focus a lot more on the art rather than worrying about how impossibly difficult it is to get high notes (such as the E6) out, let alone to sound good.

--For all intents and purposes, a descant horn is another instrument.
--The F side of a double horn is similar to a modern single horn in F, albeit noticeably different.
--A double horn is the standard orchestral horn.
--The piece was written for a single horn in F with a similar bore to the late classical/romantic natural horn.
--A modern single horn in F is more similar to the instrument Schumann wrote the piece for, than any double or descant horn…albeit very different.
--A natural horn in F and a modern horn in F sound somewhat similar, a natural horn in Bb and a modern horn in Bb sound comparatively less similar.
--It is very possible to play the super high notes on a single horn in F. It's just super-duper tricky. If one ain't got the skills, one can hide that lack extremely well on a descant horn.
--The longer a horn is, the more "horne-y" it sounds, and the shorter a horn is, the more trumpety it sounds.
      --A baroque TRUMPET (!) is l o n g e r than a descant H O R N.
--A descant horn does not sound much like a horn.
--Is descant horn not used to "cheat"? Well...whatever the case might be, it doesn't matter. Schumann's opus 86 is definitely playable on a single F horn. It's exceptionally difficult, though. Playing the piece on the Bb side of a double horn is way easier. On a descant horn it is easier yet. One could also take a descant horn in very-high Bb to play the piece! Or a trumpet with a large bell wound like a horn. Just put a horn mouthpiece on it and call it a horn!
--Schumann's opus 86 is a show-off piece, especially for the 1st horn. The further away from a single F horn one goes, the less of a show-off it is. So, again: Is a descant horn a cheat? No! But it's pretty much a trumpet/cornet with a large hand-stuffed bell and a horn mouthpiece on the other end.

@@foxfagottjunge6011 My comment is 11 years old. It would be in primary school if it were a child. And I know you didn't have any way of knowing this before responding, but I wrote it when I was a teenager who was good enough at playing the French horn to write authoritatively but not good enough or self-aware enough to realize how shit I was at playing the French horn. I didn't learn that until a few years later. All of this to say, I admire your dedication to responding to a comment that a dumb teenager wrote, who barely knew the first thing about the French horn and has long since forgotten it.

Shumann had a very pianistic vision of instruments, even his approach to orchestral compositions (Symphonies) arrived late and many passages are very uncomfortable but this makes Shumann a very brilliant and unique composer.

The two solo horns on our left (as you look at the video) look very different. Anybody know what the differences are and how that effects their tone? The second of those two horns looks to have extra tubing, which makes me think it can maybe play lower notes, but I'm just guessing. Anyone KNOW? Thanks! :)

The pre-85 Paxman 40 copies that I know of are the Holton 200, Conn 12D, Hoyer RT91, and Patterson Descant. The easiest way the tell them apart is generally from the 1st and 3rd valve slides, as well as the linkage for the change valve. I would put money on this being a Paxman.

Lamentable...

I expected more from this composition. First listening, and i think there is too much from first horn. It could be very well adapted to a single, or maybe double horn concerto, without much loss...
The composer could have used more of a chorale style, and that would probably sound much better!

I've heard that this piece is so demanding that it is customary for the four soloists to pass the first part around, agreeing that at certain points that the one playing the first part moves to second, second to third, etc, rotating the highest notes among the players so that they all get to sound heroic.
We have to remember, however, that the modern valve horn had only recently been invented in Schumann's time, and the piece was written as a demonstration of the new invention.

+Érico Schmitt its not a concerto (sonata form) for horns but rather a free flowing 'concert piece' as its name suggests--such as a fantasy--sort of rumination/show piece of horns with orchestra in schumann's typically wayward, poetic, charming style...
