Nowhere is a great Shoegaze record, for sure, but I feel like it's not all that different from most Shoegaze projects out there, whereas Going Blank Again captured something truly special and distinct for the band's sound. I COMPLETELY agree with your take on Souvlaki and Loveless. While it's a pioneer for the shoegaze genre, I find Loveless to be pretty one note and not as dynamic. On the other hand, Souvlaki takes the concepts mbv laid out and takes them to the next level. I'm sure people find it to be a lot more pop when compared to other, more sophisticated shoegaze albums, but I can't not vibe to what Slowdive is putting down across the entire project. There's hardly a dull moment and the tracks don't blend together like they do in Loveless. A+ take my man

haven't heard Slowdive's music, but you're right in that Loveless IS pretty one-note, but that's kinda what i like about it. it's such a mood, and when i'm in the same mood, there's nothing better.

@@n.nealparadise3963 Yeah I understand that, maybe I've just never been in the right mood whenever I've listened to it. Your state of mind can definitely influence whether or not an album connects with you. I mean just a few weeks ago I was re-listening to In The Court of The Crimson King and I kinda hated it because I wasn't in a great mood, but just recently I gave it another chance and loved it as much as I did the first time. Untrue by burial is a stunning album and one of my favourites here but I don’t think you can get it unless you’re British tbh. I’m sure there are cases of Americans loving it but the way it paints a picture of grimy late night barely illuminated cold streets is something special. Every Brit can relate to going clubbing or a mates house and then having to come back at like 3am in the dark on a night bus.

    • @KyleReidMu

Thankfully even tho I'm Italian and totally no British like i love the album.
It definitely belongs to the context you've given but i find it so fucking emotional no matter where you've lived.
It delicts loneliness in perfections also i don't know how it can be considered boring though I might agree on the b side sounding more similar.

    • @anglonrx2754
      @anglonrx2754 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@gianmarcobulla223 exactly, ultimately it’s introverted. Being in some cold rainy British city couped up in a tiny apartment will lend itself to that but it’s hardly necessary. Its not inherently boring this bloke just can’t relate. The drums constantly drifting between nuance; no use of sequences. It’s timeless.

I also understand why you feel it’s pretty one note, it’s very specific moody, and it actually took me longer than I’d admit to get into since I was obsessed with Heligoland for ages prior to really enjoying Mezz, most of their albums are more up beat than Mezz too, Blue Lines has so many bangers comparatively. I just like melting into Mezz a lot more. And Protection too is just as spacey.

I'm only 30 but I did listen to a lot of Aphex Twin growing up so I came in around the middle of his heyday, i suppose.
My understanding, half remembering articles I've read over the years, is that first off, the selected works are catchy.
but the biggest impact is Richard's use and manipulation of the technology at the time.
Basically, he was making sounds with machines that shouldn't be able to make the sounds they were making, and he was using established e-instruments in a way that no one was thinking of.
I'm not sure if that's why people rank it high, or if it's just the catchiness.
But the reason I was always taught is that it was probably the largest leap forward in electronic technique and manipulation that we'll see until they make quantum instruments or something.
And he just happened to record his practice and experiments and that's what the selected works represent. Like watching a documentary about someone trying to learn how to make a movie but then they end up making a banger.

In regards to your SAW comments, Aphex Twin may have more experimental records, but I think his debut is his most consistent. It’s easily his most influential and iconic statement of the 90s, but I also feel like it lays the groundwork for the rest of his records but introducing his strange personality to the public. A lot of electronic music producers didn’t really have that strong of an identity around that time. In that sense, I’d compare it to Ziggy stardust in how it’s probably not their most bold album, but it’s the best feat of songwriting and track-for-track consistency.

I love Hospice and that’s how I ended up finding this video wanting to hear peoples opinions on it. Although I love this album, I do agree that there’s this ego stifling the whole thing.
I feel like the storytelling is just so emotional and i really love how you’re basically listening to a story. Bear itself is such an amazing song. You can just feel the emotion and heaviness of the situation. How many songs are there about a couple having to get an abortion? Let alone many that are this emotional. I can really feel the main characters hopelessness and pain while being in this abusive relationship described.
Overall, it is such an interesting concept album about being in an abusive relationship. I see why people don’t like it, but I feel like it just resonates for a lot of people

If you enjoy that sort of laid-back cerebral style of post-rock, I can’t recommend Hex by Bark Psychosis enough. It’s a fantastically chill album that is both easy to listen to in the background and surprisingly emotionally impactful when given greater attention. So glad Ive finally found someone else who prefers Souvlaki to Loveless, I guess its vibe just suits me so much more. Loveless is like the atmosphere of a fierce storm outside your house while youre under your covers. Souvlaki is like the atmosphere of a 3am cigarrete looking out the window taking in the city at night.
Edit: Also since everyone else and their dog has recommended Nowhere by Ride I think Its Immaterial by Black Marble is also a great Shoegaze album, nowhere near on the same level as the big three but a very underrated laid back sound that definetely takes more inspiration from Souvlaki than from Loveless

Everything Else Matters - Pinkshinyultrablast ((this one was my intro into the whole genre, also leans more into dream pop))

Dream Ivory - Dream Ivory (( dream pop))
Depression Cherry - Beach House ((dream pop))
Heaven or Las Vegas - Cocteau Twins ((dream pop))

For shoegaze I'd highly recommend "Melting Sun" by Lantlos. It's a bit heavier than most shoegaze and kinda dips into the territory of "blackgaze" a bit (which is a fusion genre of shoegaze and black metal) but it doesn't have the screamed vocals of blackgaze and feels a lot lighter and more lush. Not necessarily something everyone considers a "shoegaze essential" but it's one of my favorite records and sounds like nothing else I've heard in the genre.
