Awesome setup Dave. I've been using simple lean-to and plow point shelters for years and have never found another option that appealed to me. This one is an exception. I'll definitely be using this on my next hunt. Thanks!
Shoot! That first configuration IS a RAIN set up! I love the modified plow point! I use a plow point exclusively with a small tarp, and I can't wait to get out and try this version. I love that you can have a fire front and center...really cool.
I experimented with a lean to configuration with this tarp and a long fire in 0 to -8 weather. I think this set up would be way better. I will be trying this config soon. Thanks for sharing.
I really like this configuration. I always thought the Flying Wedge was a little cramped. Also, I have to be honest, I wondered how the first set up would do in the rain too. I just figured you have more dirt time than me and probably don't like sleeping in the rain any better than the next guy, so it would probably be fine. As always, thanks.
used a similar design on a week long campout in the tenn. mountain's and worked like a champ. rained all week on us and no problems. but in south florida where we live the trees are a lot smaller and not as many as you would find in the eastern woodlands .plus the tropical rainstorms we have will drive rain side ways from one direction as it comes and blow it from the opposite and it passes almost guaranteeing your stuff will get wet. we wrap our bed roll in a 55 gal bag when were out of camp . that's whats makes bushcraft so fun as no two places are alike and there is always something new to learn. awesome stuff dave keep up the good work
I made a tarp shelter one day and it was perfect. I built it according to the trees and space available. I have never been able to recreate the same but it looks a lot like this. Excellent shelter with a fire in front
I'm going to have to try this configuration when I get my tarp. That looks like an awesom setup and really would take advantage of the long fire and protect your gear too.
Dave, I know that you show different knots and configurations to be used in the outdoors. However, I have a hard time seeing exactly what you are doing. I just wanted to see if it may be possible to release a series on knots?
Another great video dave.. I've done this before it works great!! But when we done it we put two of them facing each other and put the fire in the middle of the two of them.. This worked great easy to heat!!!! I'll do a video on it...
Looks great !!! Probably even throw a clear plastic drop cloth in front and turn it into a type of super shelter... for the colder climates, with a nice long fire, Merry Christmas to you and your Family !
I have used a similar set-up for years with a cheap tarp. Instead of rolling a blanket up in it, I gather a lot of leaves under the bottom and steak it down so that it does not exceed the roof line. It works great. If the wind is changing directions, just drive a few twigs in the ground ant one end and weave a few more in between as a wind break. Takes maybe ten minutes.
Once again,Great!! I haven't forgotten those pics from the spanish marines old fashioned shelter made with triangles "ponchos".I owe you. Merry Christmas from Spain Sir.
Last night and today, it has been absolutely pouring the rain here in Ohio. So I was shocked to see the first shelter dry also Good Job! Dave, picking that spot to setup, because around my area it's mostly standing water and flash flood alerts.
Interesting set, would be nice to have all the major tarp sets in a illustrated drawing, kind of like the army manuals, So Dave when you coming out with a new book? Seems you learn more as time goes by, would be nice, a pathfinder field manual.
When I was a kid in the scouts they always had us trench around the tent. Is that a thing of the past? all the tarp set ups I have seen they have not done that. Started making a playlist of the tarp set ups, so I can find them when I get one. thanks
I was taught the same, and we were taught how to trench into a gathering area for an emergency water supply. Of course it only works in wet weather LOL. It's another skill that's been lost over the years :)
Nice tarp but way too heavy for me. I carry a Snugpak All Weather Sil 10x10 at 35 oz. Works great. The tentsmiths is super high quality though, thanks for sharing Dave ;)-
Dave: On the Tentsmith site, they state that the oilskin tarp is the same material as the watch coat. But I remember, from your video, that the watch coat was very thin--enough to let light pass through. Is the tarp a heavier material in your opinion? Thanks
The Ohio weather this weekend, very wet, very warm. Can't and won't need a fire but cover is necessary, I prefer a plow but don't like that high guy line, this is a great adaptation. May be my new setup. Thanks Dave.
***** Hey Dave. I bought a heavy duty, brown and grey tarp from Walmart for about $10 and I was wondering if you could show a few configurations for a rectangular tarp, like an 8'x10' or 9'x12. I've already tried a standard lean-to configuration, which this tarp works amazing for as part of it acts as a drop cloth, but I'm just curious as to how limited I'd be. Thanks. I always learn a lot from your videos.
Awesome set up. I am saving to get a tarp like that because of the toughness, versatility and durability. Have you done a video on proper care and maintenance? Like periodic applications of some kind of oil or wax or could that actually shorten its life? Just throwin' it out there. Seems like it would be quieter than vynyl...less snap.
to modify this one step farther. run two prussic lines and the tarp flap between the two lines. so you have the option to fold back or down front the flap. leaving you the chance to fend off driving winds. you still want to put a cord to the flap corner to secure the flap in the back or down position. then only tie off the center tarp tie point with a separate line to a nearby tree for head height. does this make sense?
as always a good video...was wondering something however... I know u have the sail needle with you at all times but have u ever made a housewife kit for repairs?
I would like to see you do some things with a yard tarp........the blue kind you get at a hardware store..........cuzz im poor and cant buy your fancy tarp......
i have no idea why people would think It wouldn't shed water its been used for yrs whelen lean to mod. its in a book that's 75 yrs old at least nd has been used by trappers for yrs but oh well another great vid
Something fun and fresh. A few days out or a week out using the skills practically. I really enjoy the multi-part trip logs. I am making no claim upon you, only suggesting content. Enjoy all that you do.
Anyone looking for a tarp that fits their budget a bit closer than $200, might want to check out DD Hammocks. I bought the 1.7 lb., 3 m x 3 m ( 9.7 ft. x 9.7 ft.) waterproof tarp with 19 tie out points for $68.00.
can you do a poor mans style ?.............if you have gear to do this with that means its not survival its camping..............I don't use gear like that cuzz 1-im poor and 2-im not camping...........you don't have things like that in a real world situation.....unless your camping.....
Brother if you think that survival means you are stuck with a junkie tarp a pop can and a condom, you are watching too much TV, if you look at the majority of Survival situations in the US people do not loose their kit, they just don't bring one, survival is your responsibility to be prepared when you go out to begin with! I have an entire series on Basic SURVIVAL, this is BUSHCRAFT there is a difference, but they are intertwined as well.
I am SOLD Brother......I want one....Thanks for the follow up on the rain. I am going to ditch my shelter half...

Good tarp series Dave. I usually use some type of tent in very rainy or buggy situations but love a tarp/fire setup throughout the cooler season.
As kind of a big guy (6' 2") I think I like this better than any other one you have shown. I too am sold on that tarp and am planning on getting one.
I'm going to have to try this configuration when I get my tarp. That looks like an awesom setup and really would take advantage of the long fire and protect your gear too.
This Tarp is available at www.tentsmiths.com
That sure looks like it beats the lean-to shelter I had to use in survival school in Alaska! I was miserable in that thing! Great ideas Dave.
I really like the modified version Dave. I will have to try it out. Thanks.
Dave, You are doing one heck of a good job on your videos these days.
I love that the research set-up trap was so dry. Love that type of setup.
Merry Christmas Dave and thank you for all the hard work you do.

Merry Christmas from Spain Sir.
Good looking shelter.

Merry Christmas Dave to u and your family thanks for all u do
i have used that set up before (used my poncho when i was in the Marines)..kinda did it on accident but it worked, never knew it had a name
cosy :)
how much does that tarp weigh?
Interesting set, would be nice to have all the major tarp sets in a illustrated drawing, kind of like the army manuals, So Dave when you coming out with a new book? Seems you learn more as time goes by, would be nice, a pathfinder field manual.

yep, you've got another winner in that set-up, especial when you used that center pull-out point, plenty of room there.
Liked it! Please keep making tarp configuration videos
Nice tarp but way too heavy for me. I carry a Snugpak All Weather Sil 10x10 at 35 oz. Works great. The tentsmiths is super high quality though, thanks for sharing Dave ;)-
love that set up... cant wait to try it!

Great instructions as always! Thumbs up!
Another great idea and video! Thanks Dave. Any tips on rewaxing? My tarp is also my shooting mat and I think it leaks now.
The Ohio weather this weekend, very wet, very warm. Can't and won't need a fire but cover is necessary, I prefer a plow but don't like that high guy line, this is a great adaptation. May be my new setup. Thanks Dave.
Nice video, well done! Pretty cool tarp too!
Have you ever used a tarp for locomotion? I saw a video once of some guys tarp-sailing across a field. Looked like a lot of fun.

Neat setup ,good info, thanks for sharing.
Thank You So Much ! Great Info and Teaching as Always.
Awesome shelters brother. What are the marks on your axe?
Great tarp set ups mate, by the way, whats your preffered knife carry these days
Where can we find pants and shirt like those on the video and can you tell us more of the importance of these specific clothes and styles...
Actually, reply is not needed as I will ask them when they call about my order. Thanks.
I REALLY LIKE THIS SET UP, I HAVE TWO DOGS THAT TRAVEL WITH ME, THAT LOOKS JUST LIKE WHAT I'M LOOKIN FOR
Great video..
Thanks Dave

ty dave, another great idea
Will you do modern trapping series or is trapping season out there.
What was the name of this tarp again?
i'll have to try that configuration next time i'm out,
Cheers for the video,
Dave do you have any experince with lever guns
Could you do a video on Jeff white knives? They are common man prices, and would like some history. Thanks.
What is the best set up for high wind rain storms.?
as always a good video...was wondering something however... I know u have the sail needle with you at all times but have u ever made a housewife kit for repairs?
Great shelter...gotta try it.
Have you thought about using a tyvek tarp to save weight?
Dave what about ticks? I see you always laying in leaves..are you worried about lyme?
I will use this! Thanks brotha!
I was noticing the axe in the background...any purpose for , what appears to be inch increments notched in the handle?
Ny thoughts?
Measurment
I would like to see you do some things with a yard tarp........the blue kind you get at a hardware store..........cuzz im poor and cant buy your fancy tarp......
Happy holidays
thanks for the vid dave.
cool!
I loved this guy on duel survival
that's going to collect a lot of water on top in the rain
Not at all.
i have no idea why people would think It wouldn't shed water its been used for yrs whelen lean to mod. its in a book that's 75 yrs old at least nd has been used by trappers for yrs but oh well another great vid
That just plain works!
great video man
Great config
Well done mister...never mind the nay sayers...they still have an outside chance of growing up brother. Peace and keep the vids rolling.
When do you go on the epic journey?
Which journey is that?
Something fun and fresh. A few days out or a week out using the skills practically. I really enjoy the multi-part trip logs. I am making no claim upon you, only suggesting content. Enjoy all that you do.
Where the snow is?
Melted
I imagine thatif you were to have some of that Forrest Gump "sideways" rain, you could get wet.
Made of polyester, will melt and burn. Not for me, have wasted time and money on inferior tarps.
pack a pup tent
I guess ill have to try again. But I know ill get wet ! :) joke brother
can you do a poor mans style ?.............if you have gear to do this with that means its not survival its camping..............I don't use gear like that cuzz 1-im poor and 2-im not camping...........you don't have things like that in a real world situation.....unless your camping.....
