    I see some comments on how the end of the ceremony seemed awkward. I see that also, but think the president showed great compassion, respect and caring. Perhaps he wasn’t briefed on her condition and no one was there to manage the event. I will always give President Reagan an assumption of good faith as he was an exemplary gentleman.

    Lovely woman, realizing Kate could not speak for herself, stands up and asks “May I speak for her” and then does a nice job thanking Reagan in Kate’s behalf.

      @lindashelley3635 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      nicermguy1 I think I heard her say that she was Kate Smiths sister, and I think it would have been a nice gesture if they had invited her up onto the podium so that everyone could have heard her speech clearly. It seemed a bit awkward at the end, and surely they must have known that Miss Smith was unable to make her own thank you speech and have finished the presentation off with a bit more dignity. This fine lady at least deserved that much surely.

    For people wondering about the awkward nature of this , it should be noted that Kate fell into a diabetic coma and suffered brain damage in 1976 . This is why she didn't speak to give thanks for the honor . President Reagan was gracious and understanding of her condition . Her voice was unifying and comforting to the many GI's who listened to her rendition of "God Bless America " . God rest all the brave men and women who served our great nation in it's most needy time during the war years .

    She is the farthest thing from being a racist as they said about her. The song she sand was sung by many black artists of her time. She was a staunch advocate for the African Americans in this country. I love how white people transfer the responsibility to other white Americans especially when there is no one to defend them. African Americans loved Kate Smith. Ask my grandma.

    I wrote 3 US Presidents: Why not make: "God Bless America" our new National Anthem? No answer. When Kate sang it, it gave us all goosebumps. Such a much greater song than, "The Star Spangled Banner" which nobody can sing or remember the lyrics beyond the opening. I guarantee: DONALD TRUMP will win the 2024 presidential election by changing our national anthem to "God Bless America." It says it for us all. Soldiers & civilians...everyone! 🎼🎶🎸
