Regarding still thinking "That Thing 2: Electric Boogaloo" is funny: it's not really about it being funny, so much as it being a Shiboleth. It's a fixture of Internet culture that, while no longer being humorous, establishes oneself as being part of the Internet culture. It's the same reason why nerds who grew up in the previous century could not stop quoting Monty Python. It's not because it's still funny, but to show that they are part of the community by repeating its cultural fixtures.
As with everything, Shiboleth can be co-opted by fascists and white supremecists. It's depressing, yes.

wait i know this is so far from the point but HOW do you not find monty python funny and why is that the example of old “nerd” culture (as opposed to like star trek or something)

    • @Bluecho4
      @Bluecho4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +42

@@zoologistsnightmare Clarification: _Of course_ Monty Python is still funny. But we've all seen it before, enough times that it doesn't elicit the same uproarious laughter it did in its heyday. Simply because it doesn't have the element of surprise that gives comedy impact.
It's still very good comedy. Just as with early Simpsons works, the Monty Python people were masters of their craft. Certainly better than much modern comedy, which tends to age very poorly. It's very much like an older model of car in that way: it will likely outlast many of its successors because of its quality. There's a reason it was so beloved in the first place.
My point was that Monty Python doesn't get repeated just because it's so good. It gets repeated because it's a Shiboleth. It's a shared cultural touchstone that nerds use to identify themselves as "part of the tribe".
Or, to put it another way, it's a meme that everyone knows, and feels compelled to repeat when the moment presents itself. Regardless of whether it stopped being "funny", as such.

I know I'm opening up to catch some flack for this, but GamerGate didn't start with the hatemongers, it got co-opted by them and then they took over.
It started over bad journalism, and then the idiots saw that a woman was involved, and started their "all women bad" shtick while drawing attention to the movement. The movement then got called sexist, and people that weren't about to stand up for something that got co-opted by sexists left, while the actual sexists took over the reins and started up the "They're calling all gamers sexist!" rhetoric.
This all while the sexists encouraged their hateful friends to get involved.

Thought I’d comment my experience with boog boys here.
I was really involved in having discussions with people of very different beliefs from me over early quarantine to see where I really stood. Once I saw a comment somewhere from a boogaloo boy who said he was at a BLM protest to protect protestors and supported the movement against police brutality and white supremacy. Of course, only knowing the boog boys as a far right movement at the time, reached out to him to discuss it. He seemed chill.
Later on there was a group chat will us in it. Everything was going relatively smoothly, though I questioned why the so-called opposer of white supremacists would go on to invite several far righters into the chat (along with a leftist he know irl) and complained how Trump was too much of a lefty socialist for them (I shit you not they said he was a socialist).
It still seemed to go smoothly until the events at Kenosha occurred.
They made death threats against leftists and talked about what a hero Rittenhouse was. They talked about wanting to kill lots of leftists. At the time, they knew someone in there and I were left-leaning (and minors), and still continued. At that point, I left as fast as I could.
To anyone reading this who still is unsure where the Boog boys lie: they don’t have to call themselves white supremacists to advocate for extreme violence against people with different ideologies and minorities. They may be respectful, even, at first.
If you’re having second thoughts about supporting the movement and talking to them, please be careful. I can’t tell you what you can and can’t do, just please be safe.

@O. M. It was less a call to victory and more a call to arms, I think it's quite naïve to think that the current fight against the far-right is over, I'd hope it is but I think it's more likely just beginning. In that vein, I'd argue that it's at least as important to remember the people and the times that people fought and lost as it is to remember those who fought and won. Fighting fascism and tyranny before it has never been easy, it's always been difficult and dangerous, often with more at stake that it is possible for many to imagine. We don't fight these people for the plaudits or because it's easy, we do it because it's the right thing to do. And because the consequences of not fighting are for many people the same as fighting and losing.
If people want to put my friends or comrades in a camp just for who they are or where they come from then they will have to put me right in there with them, I will keep fighting them until I have no fight left to give.

Note: by "paramilitary" and "militia" I don't mean the ones like in the US, but something more akin to less organized brownshirts.
In Poland, The Supreme Leader of the Country (leader of Law and Justice - ruling conservative party, holding just an office of an ordinary MEP) roused the literal fascist paramilitary against women (and allies) protesting against complete ban of abortion. Those militias also got vocal support from Polish Catholic Chruch officials, ranging from parish priests to archbishops.
During the so called "Polish October Revolution" from previous year (massive women protests against the aforementioned abortion ban) the National Guard, armed with batons and knives, got wrecked by superior numbers of K-Pop girls, squaters and our beloved local Antifa (though, the national TV called them German, because it is late 1940s and every single bad thing that happens to Poland is caused by Germany). The Guard was outnumbered literally 300 to tens of thousand (but my lord there is no such force!).
As of late, I'm in a mood to write long comments - follow my comments on channels of V**sh, RGR, Atun-Shei (he's a LaFollettian leftie, that's my diagnosis). I'm sure my 2020 depression spiral wears out.

@@GaigeGrosskreutzsMissingBicep incorrect, Anarcho-Communism makes perfect sense. In fact, I would say that the real contradiction is non-Anarchist communism, since 1/3rd of the definition Marx gave for communism was a stateless society (other 2/3rds are moneyless and classless). Any state that's claimed to be communist was lying or mistaken or something like that, as they would more accurately be described as "state capitalist" rather than either socialist or communist. You literally do not, and in fact CANNOT know what you're talking about if you actually think Anarchism is incompatible with communism. It's certainly not compatible with anything else.
