My son is 21 now and built himself a cabin like this when he was 19, only his has a bathroom. Paid for it all, and his Dad helped him build. He still lives there and really likes it. It's affordable, too.
@snakeonix9105 Yes, on our land. He still pays us rent for the space, though it may not be what he would normally be charged. We like having him around to help take care of the animals. It's a win-win for us.
Hello fella, i'm an architect in london across the pond and i just wanted to say that i've had a calling to come to alaska for some time and live this exact lifestyle you have made for yourself. Your like my dream come true fella... Absoloutely stunning cabin in beautiful surroundings! super jealous matey and great work, enjoy!
People I lived in Manhattan many years and now live in THE NEW BROOKLYN by BARKLAYS CENTRE only ten minutes from the city! Thank you so much for letting me get away. I would have to live by a hospital or pharmacy to do this! I have severe asthma and would go totally paranoid in that situation. But , because of people like you I get to see it, what’s funny, is I’m a performer, singer , dancer, actor, funny guy , do of course I live in NYC! Come visit , you might be over- whelmed how much you love it!!
Coming from a 35 year old dying man, you truly have lived, and is my current dream I'll unfortunately never achieve. So I live vicariously through videos like this. I love your channel. This is the final boss of dreams likely hundreds of thousands of people have. And you've made it. I have no idea who you are, but I am proud of you. Living authentically. Head full of knowledge and curiosity. Keep surviving and thriving bucko. All gas, no brakes. Godspeed.
You've trully inspired me to live more and to try and achieve my dreams, one of them being to build my own cabin. I'll carry on your live with me, I hope you're doing okay ❤
Exactly, I try very hard to make it feel properly cozy. Plastic, clutter and drywall all take away from the cabin in the woods feel. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
My dad has a log cabin in Wisconsin, I put skirting around the entire cabin in a weekend. Made a huge difference for the temperature of the floor. My feet used to get cold in slippers, you can walk around barefoot now
Our cabin is raised off the ground and I just put R-19 and sheeted under it and the floor warms nice. We have an Empire direct vent heater as a backup.
This has to be one of my favorite cabin setups I’ve seen. It’s simple, yet you’re able to maintain some creature comforts whilst truly living off grid. Even more impressive that this was your first project! I’m super jealous of your setup, and you should be proud of what you and your buds accomplished by building this. Great work!!
Greetings from the Harvia country (Finland that is), awesome to see how saunas are built in other countries. In Finland saunas usually have the seats higher as the heat rises. :)
Wow Matt this is a Dream Come True for you!!! I love this cabin!!! The colors of the siding and the roof. Love how beautiful Alaska is! The fact you have trees all around you for firewood for the wood stove. The inside i love. Futon couch that pulls out to a bed. The coffee table your wife built herself fantastic!!! The gas stove as a backup. The kitchen. Using a hot water pot since you have snow and a creek or lake around in summer!!! Water goes through the sink into bucket smart!!! Stove runs on propane and not electricity. Love the loft!!! Extra bed for friend dog. Love you have a generator and an electrician for a friend!!!! Great that you and your wife enjoy cabin life with an outhouse, sauna, woodhouse and a toolshed!!!
Lovely little sauna, nothing better that hot steam in the winter in the countryside. Harvia do a little water heater that you can add into the sauna stove chimney that then gives you water for washing with after sauna. Hyvää loylu
Skirting does make it much warmer. I lived in a trailer home for a time that'd originally didn't have it, and when I added it, it made a HUGE difference. Only catch is you'll likely have animals tearing into it for the warmth, so I'd use some kind of metal version. Definitely want to use foam board as well to insulate it.
Great, air ventillation in the roof is essential, like you've effectively addressed, good job! After 42 AK winters, I thought I'd take a break and head for Mexico. Good for the mental health, and come home recharged and ready for spring, yay!
My husband sent me this video. We are planning to start building in the late spring in upper peninsula Michigan. Similar climate. Very cold. Lots of snow. We bought blueprints that include windows up high. I was thinking to leave those out. Thanks to your comment about lighting, I will use the windows. Also, I love your kitchen sink setup. We will also have a dry cabin, so this pot setup will be perfect! Our home will be a little bigger because we are going full-time off-grid. Yours is a great model though!
Great video. I’m currently building a 16x20 off grid cabin. It’s totally dry and insulated at this time. Got some great ideas from your cabin interior. Thanks - from Hells Canyon, Frank.
I don't know why anyone would give you a hard time about the stairs🤔🤔 I think they are great!!!! They fulfill their purpose and that's all you need. Love this beautiful cabin♥️💚❤️💖👍👍🤗🤗
Wow! love what you've done with the place looks really cosy, I'd stay there for a winter. Only one thing missing. A dog, would love a life out there with you. Cheers from Sydney down under.
I hit the wrong thumb I do like what you have done ✅ ❤ I am very impressed with your beautiful cabin and for not having ever built anything prior GREAT JOB 💜🌷💜🌺💜🌸💜💐💜😊💜
A skirt around the crawlspace and at least R30 in the floors will help more than you would think. Heat rises but it also goes to cold in all directions. Awesome Cabin!!
Looks good! The only thing that would bug me would be a bear scratching at the Outhouse door whilst I was doing my business. Regards, Jim the Brit in NI UK
Great looking cabin! It's all you need to enjoy the great outdoors in Alaska. FYI I've seen where builders put bubble wrap over the joists before they install the underlayment. Keeps the floor considerably warmer.
Wow Matt...what a beautiful cabin. Love the knotty pine walls, window shapes and roominess and the spacious loft. Plus your out buildings which keeps everything nice & tidy. Now you get to enjoy sll your hard work with your wife, Norman & friends. Hope your Mom enjoys it too.
i bought a solar shower, they are handy..2.5 gallons.. just put your hot .warm water in it and hang it up and rinse your self off.. love the sauna..better for your pores.. im very impressed by you..trying to watch all your videos.. one day i will do it again.. if i dont get to old..lol im a retired Farmer/House builder....and ive spent half my life in the bush .. taught my friends how to build diffrent shelters /cabins and stuff.. anyways.. keep up the awesome videos..im really enjoying them..
Good vid man. Great looking place. Lot of forward thinking went into it. From Kentucky and Fairbanks in the summer, take care. Keep Timmy out of trouble, oh, good luck.
Thank you the best video I have seen so far. You explained everything perfectly and addressed the questions I always have when watching other videos. You covered everything and your cabin is magnificent, well done.
Just saw those bottles of Scotch, love it. I love your cabin. I admire you and your family doing something cool. I want to get to Alaska and do some...a ton of flyfishing! Best man, keep it going. I enjoy your channel.
I was going to ask about the land, the cost and how easy it was to buy. You mentioned that would be for the next video so I'll look forward to that. Really love your cosy cabin and the beautiful surrounding nature.
I am really interested to see how much the wood structure and the foundational stuff cost. I will do something like this soon and this video was so helpful. I hope for more
Luckily lumber prices are coming way down from pandemic levels. But I will do a full price out video soon. Getting caught up with my other footage but I promise it's coming, as well as full cabin build this summer from start to finish!
Very cool and. pretty! I'm proud you have a Finnish Harvia-"kiuas" to heat your nice sauna! I'm a saunaholic, we have electric in our tiny hause and wood using "kiuas" in our summer sauna. All the best! 🇫🇮 🇫🇮🇫🇮

Is it on your land or did he have to buy land
is he married? hahaha such a rare soul in these days

I hope you get to live out your dream one day brother 🧡 even though I’m Canadian I don’t like the snow
Admirable. Word
how I wish I can do the same thing I really would love to live in a peaceful place like that and produce your own food..

Wealth is not measured by how much money you have, but how much joy and contentment you have in your life.

Sending love and warm wishes!
This cabin is about the most cozy and homelike I have seen
Especially in small space and doesn’t look cramped or junky.
Love it
Thank you!! Glad to hear you like it!

I love seeing a cabin that is neat and not cluttered up with plastic totes and no cupboard doors!! This place is awesome!!! Well done!
Exactly, I try very hard to make it feel properly cozy. Plastic, clutter and drywall all take away from the cabin in the woods feel. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Luv 2 stay there 4 a holiday looks luvley an comfortable

Good to know! I think I'll knock that out this summer.

Damn, that was fun! You’ve done an amazing job. Warms my heart! Dad
Thanks Dad! I owe it all to you!
This is one best videos for off the grid. Your cabin is well thought out and
And planning. Good job!!!!!!

You bet!

Thank you! Im jealous, I'd take some sun right about now.
Indeed!
Just turned 50 and I want to move to AK but I have to wait till I retire. You’re livin the dream🤘🏻
Nice! Hope you get up here soon!
My dad wanted to wait until he retired to live his dream. He died 2 years after retirement. Follow your dreams now while you can still enjoy them.
