    Great review! I bought a Valvestate VS65R second hand last weekend - my very first Marshall - for the grand sum of £90 and I love it. I reckon the whole range (whenever you can still find 'em) are terrific. Definitely the best purchase I've made for a long time, Good luck with selling yours, if you haven't already.

    Love my valvestate it has a dark mid rangey sound on od 1 but I love it. I find about volume 3 to 4 it sounds best and at 5 it starts to loose some tone but it's very loud even at volume 4. The clean sounds great cranked on 10 though very brown.
    I also notice on the drive channel after volume 6 it's not louder just more gain

    It's the valve rig that targeted solid-state guys which means primarily numetal, thrash metal and industrial metal. In all the general sounds people pull out of these, the circuit doesn't in itself push the tube hard enough to reach plate saturation.
    It becomes the deep dive into pedals until you find one that does.
    I have 2 all valve heads and they actually leave much to be desired. *You're stuck sorting through stomp boxes until you find one that pushes it's valves into saturation, and it's not cheap.*
    I went to university for electrical engineering and even I don't want to start building pedals to find one.

    I own a VS102R -- 100w, two 12" Celestions, but has pretty much the same controls as yours. The key to the VS series is the 12AX7 tube in the preamp section, which gives the amp a great crunch and overdrive sound. I've owned mine for about 17 years and I love it. I think the Valvestates are underappreciated and represent a very good value.

    I bought mine for about 90 Bucks from an online - sale! I drove like an devil to get this amp.
    After 2 years i can say, .....I will buy this amp again and again! I play no gig's, but i'm sure if i will play them on mastervolume 10, the whole sttlement in Vienna, where ilive, would hear the power of this amp!
    In my cellar, the max. of volume i can play - without destroing my ears is lvl 5 of 10!
    This amp has underestimated power you think, that it's not possible!
    ......Buy this amp, if you get one!.......

    Nice review, I have this one myself and it´s a very solid amp, it´s also my first amp which is great for starters, I´m thinking about jumping to the JCM2000 but it costs more than double I think, probably selling my 8080 although I´ll be sad to say the least. How much volume do you think it´s required to get the preamp valve to crank up that tube sound this amp has ? I have my main volume at 2 and boost channel almost at 5 (which for playing in my room is quite enough ? ) ... Cheers !

    Nice video just picked up a vs65r for the low low price of 50 quid (well 100 but I got a bass guitar with it too so I split the cost) so plan is to sell the bass for 100 so free amp they’re very nice and nostalgic for me as we used to use this model when I was a frontman and my lead guitarist loved the amp

    This was my very first Marshall amp acquired in 1996. It did the job doing small clubs and house parties. Reliable amp which I used for about a year then sold it to buy a JCM600 head and a slant 4x10. Lugging the head/cab around was a chore and often wished I had just bought a single speaker extension cab for the V65R. Never had any problems with the V65R except for the annoying hiss when using a ground lift adapter to plug into an outlet where a grounded connection was not available.

      I had the same one. Bought new from Sam Ash in Queens in around 1996, as yours was. Mine took a shit like 3 years later, and i ended up selling it for 50 bucks. I then spent that 50 on a used Princeton 112 which i still have, and which kicks ass!

    Played through one of these in a hard rock band for a while. It made some deliciously wild noises through the distortion channel at times. Loved it. The amp I replaced it with paled in comparison. For a cheaper amplifier I would definitely recommend this.

    Bought one new in ‘94. Gigged with it until 2000, playing both epiphone LP and Strat, and I loved it. I had to sell it to survive, but I put it thru hell, and it always gave what I asked. It is an amp that requires much experimentation to realize its full potential, but it will go from squeaky clean to nasty.

    • @johnlime7332
      @johnlime7332  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, think I got mine in 96, at one point while I was living in Cyprus it gave up mid gig but there was an old dude and his son who had been fixing electronics since the 50s and they managed to fix it. I have sold it now and use a Marshall haze. Glad you liked the vid.

    Appreciate this is an old post but l have the same amp. My son had it when he was in a band and used to gig outside, it was loud enough. He always used the clean chanel with a pedal board. The reverb is great, just a great amp all round with a good 'dirty' chanel if you want to go that route.

    hey man, whats do the countour do? i have a 8040 and in the drive section does not have mids but have countour, i need the opositte to scooped mids, i need all the mids up for the mix, can you help me?

    • @markl1221
      @markl1221 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It gives you the option to either boost mids for that classic rock type of metal ala Priest.Maiden etc.......Or cut the mids for a more modern thrash type of metal ala early Metallica/90's Pantera. I recommend to leave the contour anywhere between 4 and 6 if not you lose a lot of volume while adding muddy distortion at higher volumes. Also the more you turn the contour on the right the more scooped it's sounds where turning it's towards the left the more the mid's honk at you. Plus you have your 3 basic tone controls to control the amount of cut/boost when sweeping your mids.

    Hello, I am from Argentina, the question I have is if the marshall valvestate 8080 has enough volume to play live or is it just to rehearse? I have many concerts and I am about to buy one but I do not decide whether to choose the 8080 or the vs 100.

    • @johnlime7332

      Fernando Vega, thanks for watching. I used this amp for around 100 gigs and maybe only twice did I even think I might need more volume. and if you need more you can always mic it up and go through a PA. I can recommend it for live work.

      AL197845w34832479823 absolutely not. most likely I would damage the amplifier as guitar signals are very weak and CDs have a high output. some modern amps have specific inputs for mp3 players etc but this amp does not. John.

      I know what your trying to do, try going through an effects board (I use an old Boss ME 50 £45 second hand) and connect a laptop from the headphone socket on the laptop to to AUX IN socket on the ME 50 to the INPUT socket on the amp. I presume all effects boards have an AUX IN. Anyway it works a treat.

    Hi John, I know its been a while since you had the 8080, but do recall how noisy it was when powered up?
    I purchased one this year and it hums when its swithced on regardles of volume level, or whether anything is plugged into it.
    I had an amp tech look at it and he couldnt find anything wrong with it, so not sure if i am just being to sensitive to the amount of noise it generates, especially given its age, 1991 on the chassis.
    Interested to know from anyone just how noisy their valvestate amps are

      Eric R. Shelton, my amp is the 8080, with a single 12" celestion otherwise very similar. I imagine the 8280 is quite a bit heavier but if that doesn't bother you, and you like the valvestate then I say go for it.
