I'm glad you talked about the Roman Republic and the Italian Patriots, although you should have mentioned both the Five Days of Milan and the First Italian War of Independence, they were major events in 1848 and fundamental for the Italian Unification. Italian Unification is not something I'm very familiar with overall so I will have to do some research before putting together a lecture on the topic. I'm sure I'll get to it eventually, though!
The freedom of Italy was sacrificed on the altar of napoleon III dirty political ambitions. But the time give ever the payback,and in 1870, after years he was protecting the pope and stopping the Italians to enter in Rome, the Prussians beaten him and he was forced to surrender, immediately after the Italian army taked Rome, and the garibaldines (that fought like mercenaries from South America to South Africa to Europe) after napoleon was captured, departed for France to fight IN DEFENSE OF THE REPUBLIC, a totally disinterested act, like In 1914 commanded by the grandson of Garibaldi the garibaldines enlisted in the French foreign legion to fight in the Argonnes, and so French citizens was present in Rome in 1848 and later, a real international revolutionary feeling pushed them to do that, (also if the French in 1848 had restored the pope on the throne, but bow there was the republic again and wherever is a republic in difficult, the garibaldines go) and with guerrilla tactics (the word franque tirallieur born there by the Prussians, for the hit and run tactics used by the garibaldines) succeeded even to win some small battle against Prussia. Indeed when the armistice was signed, the only area to be out of the truce WAS THAT ONE OCCUPIED BY GARIBALDI, because the Prussians wanted him alive, and execute him. But he succeeded in withdraw in order, and in the French parliament VICTOR HUGO sad "Garibaldi is the only French general to have win in battle against the Prussians in this war". Truely Garibaldi had defeated the French army, and the neapolitan army too, yet in Rome in 1848 but later when reinforcement a arrived the republic was condemned. If it wasn't for all these political dirty games, italy would have been united like a federal republic, and not bylike a kingdom by the savoy dinasty (the savoy was an assurance for France and England, they sad ok unite Italy but we can't accept a new revolutionary republic like France in 1792, so do a kingdom with a dinasty that will control the revolutionaries, GARIBALDI WAS YET A MYTH, BUT IN THE ROYAL CIRCLES WAS HATED INDEED BECAUSE WAS A REVOLUTIONARY.) VIVA LA REPUBBLICA! ❤️ VIVA IL 48!
Good to know! Historical generalizations are useful to a point, but a generalization can never include everyone. I should look into this Swiss revolution sometime.

I started watching your series this summer term, HIS 102, and find them very helpful in introducing the topics before I go to the textbook. I also liked the graphic organizer for the isms of the 19th c. I do best when I have that type of presentation. I hope you will consider doing more like that.

SeanIsNotCool Irish were British back then. The British middle and lower class started REDEFINING the MEANING of being BRITISH which was NOT CATHOLIC aka Irish. This is what happened in the UK in 1848. This was due to PATRIOTISM.

Not all revolutions failed. In switzerland the Revolution led to the Foundation of the modern state!
