- It has been almost 20 years since this game was released. If you’re like me, growing up as a dragon ball z fan in the late 90’s and early 2000’s Budokai 1 was probably one of your first exposures to a dbz game.
And what an introduction it was. As a kid, I loved this game. It had it all: stunning 3D visuals, a cinematic story mode, mini-games, piccolo.…loved it.
But it's been a long since I've played it, and it's not a game I've returned to as frequently as I did with Budokai 2 or 3.
So after all these years and many sequels later, does Budokai 1 still hold up? Let’s find out together

The crazy thing about these Budokai games is the unknown cancel combos that allow for stylish combo chains, there's even a small community on TH-cam that plays Budokai this way. It adds a whole new level to the game.
Unfortunately I'm not good enough at the budokai games to go that indepth. I was watching some speed runs to see if I could pick up some tips...its obvious it didn't work out lol
That game is so nostalgic and i still have my copy of that game even to this day. That game is one of things that help got me through my dark time of being in such an awful filthy living environment that I've lived in from September 2002-December 2003. It's hilarious/funny hearing Imperfect Cell's voice in Perfect Cell's body whenever Perfect Cell takes damage. One of the goofiest things that i loved to do while playing that game was pause the game at the right timing of hitting certain characters (Mainly Cell) to hear the character's funny voices of the characters being hit. That game was revolutionary despite it being obsolete.
It's awesome that a game can have such a positive impact in someones life.

Great game to own back in the day
Great vid, Budokai 1 was what introduced me to Dragon Ball and was what lead to me getting Budokai 2 (which was what fully got me into the franchise), so it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. With the “King Kai Fist” thing, it’s a loose translation of Kaioken so I’m guessing they just wanted it to be consistent with other translations.
Also with Vegeta having Boo Saga attire in the menu, another weird thing is one of the PAL versions’ covers (the one I own at least) having characters like Spopovich & Majin Vegeta on its cover (I think it even has Boo himself). I REALLY don’t know what they were thinking with that 😂
I had a section talking about the PALs cover but ended up taking it out. Whoever made the cover obviously never played the game lol
There's a character you missed. Assuming he's in the PAL version. In the US, beating the Advanced (Final version) of the World Tournament mode, unlocks Great Saiyaman
Man the soundtrack and the whole cutscenes give me goosebumps even after 20 years. Maybe I liked this DBZ game the most cuz it was my happiest time in life as well I dunno, Great vid lives up some memories. I hated Gokus SSJ form cuz of tons of ki it needed to keep it up. Man Trunks was my fav one almost did not need any to keep his blonde cool form. Fun fact goku does way more DMG when he is SSJ compared to vegeta or Trunks though
One of the most underrated gaming channels around! So glad I found these vids. These classic DBZ games don’t get revisited enough! :)
What I love most about this is Yamcha is really Story Mode's secret final boss.

Just few notes, you used the japanese anime intro music when comparing the game intros, but did you know that the japanese budokai intro is a recreation of the anime intro.
The Gamecube improved on the visuals because they had time and also the PS2 graphics chip is not the best.
And yes, King Kai Fist is kinda correct since Kaio-Ken can be translated to Kaios Fist/Punch or something like that.
And several things you wished for, like the mini games you wish existed here, you wont be disapointed in the future :).

I really enjoyed this video. I miss the cutscenes and minigames from this one. If we had the gameplay of budokai 3 and the story presentation of budokai 1 I'd be quite happy. Great analysis and comedy. Super saiyan 2 is also one of my favorite transformations from z.
I haven't watched this vid yet but this game is great, it obviously sucks as games get better but I love it

Great Saiyaman is in the game as a secret character. Don’t remember the requirements to unlock him but I remember being real disappointed after getting him.

Super super minor detail, but if you beat the advance “world match” you unlock Great Saiyaman. But it’s almost not worth mentioning, because he sucks in this game. 😅

This is the first Dragon Ball game I ever played as a little kid,I had it for the Nintendo Gamecube. When I played the PS2 version I noticed the characters had huge outlines around their eyes which bothered me.
The burst mode in this game is the best out of the Budokai series,the cutscenes in the storymode hold up to this day and I personally think it has the best cutscenes out of any Dragon Ball game. The soundtrack is awesome even though it's plagiarized,I listen to it from time to time while I'm working out at the gym.
I played this game again when the HD collection was released,was pissed off that the original music was taken out. I rarely go back to play this game but if I do it would usually just be for World Tournament mode.
This is one of the best gaming channels I've found. You are hilarious and your straight face just makes it better, I love it!
You would be absolutely correct that this is not a bad game, it's obsolete. There is no reason other than nostalgia to even want to go back to it as it's...kinda painful to watch and cumbersome to play with how much modern controls have spoiled us.
I'd love to see your take on Tony Hawk games if you had the opportunity to experience them growing up!

@@HiddenChannel you’re welcome! I’ll be honest, despite how weak this game is compared to its successors. I still think that this game holds up better than a lot of newer games. I like the cutscenes style. I like the multiple modes it had and while limited it had some replayability. Other than that, I agree with your analysis of the game!

Yeah, it's hard to believe that its 2 decades old.
Budokai 1 aged well in some aspects, it's the blueprint of every Dragon Ball game going forward so ofc somethings will be rough but you can still get some enjoyment out of the gameplay and has one of the better Dragon Ball story modes. It was my first exposure to DB so I'll always have a soft spot for it

Budokai blew my mind as a 5-6 year old.
This my first time commenting on your videos, but i appreciate your retrospective and analysis videos. Are u able to do a retrospective on Dragon Ball Raging Blast Series? It’s a 3D Arena Fighter, 1st one called Dragon Ball Raging Blast, and the sequel is called Dragon Ball Raging Blast 2. If u can’t do retrospective on it. That’s okay, still love your channel.
I plan on cover those games when I get a way to record them lol. They won't be retrospectives though, probably more in the style of my tenkaichi videos
My first dbz game was Final Bout. I enjoyed it back then.
When I first got this game I remember it call world tournament.
I will never forget beating cell as a 5-6 on my cousins ps2 by myself u couldnt tell me shxt💀💀💀💀that fight will forever be OP ash
I loved Budokai when i was a kid. I just wished it wouldve covered the Buu saga. All i wanted when i was a kid was a game with budokai 1 style storymode wirh cool cutscenes that covered the 4 main sagas. When budokai 2 came out, thats what i expected. I was so disappointed at the board game story mode. Life hit hard in 2004 and i never got to play Budokai 3 or anything else up until Xenoverse. I recently tried playing kakarot...i hate the gameplay of it. I feel like kakarot is my dream dbz game as a child, but it's just not for me at this point.
The answer the question basically Goku was instructed to not take the medicine until he started showing symptoms but because of the time change from trunks coming back to the past and sell coming back to the past his heart virus got delayed so it didn't start happening until the end droids arrived and obviously he didn't have the medication on him
I won't lie, Budokai 1 was brilliant, but oh good god, the loading time on the game were so bad!
Never seen this game ever but damn does it looks alright for it's time. Yeah the models look a little bit like dolls but most of the animations and cutscenes hold up.
King kai fist is pretty much the literal translation from Japanese for the kaioken but weird that it'd be included in a localization but that type mistake/error (if you can call it that) pops up in a few dragon ball games.

I never played the first one, but I'm curious about it now, especially when you talk about the difficulties of watching the anime on free TV. In Brazil DBZ was on air at the same time I was in school, so I only watched it during summer, thanks to that never had the chance to watch the Frieza Saga until I was an adult. I would've loved this game back when I was a kid, oh well, at least I had a few laughs with friends while playing Super Butouden 3.
Awe boi i went through the story mode and the game so many times to get all the dragon balls granted all the wishes which was the breakthrough skill for all the characters then when you collect all dragon balls again they actually don't serve a purpose just for looks or something like that

The source material doesn't actually start with the Sayain arc. Thanks a lot Toei for confusing people via splitting up Dragon Ball. It was always one series in Toriyama's manga version. I only just recently learned there was a GameCube version for these games. I always knew about the Wii version of BT2 and 3. I didn't play this game until the hd collection and I am still perved at the lack of B2 in it.

king kai fist is kaioken in english. i heard the tried to translate everything which is why its named that
Translations during this period were so inconsistent. I remember I had this dbz sticker book that had changed bulmas name to Kelly or something like that lol

I fell off of the budakai series because it was such a slap in the face seeing how budakai 2's story mode was executed. Imo, and anyone else that values the story I was fine with how the game was done the first time.

I wish we got absorbed Krillin Cell as a character. SSJ3 goku is not in the game such wasted potential.

Burst Limit had no rights to repeat the same stupid thing , even if you can play as Broly and Bardock

Also Goku didn’t take the medicine because he didn’t have the disease yet. And Goku also was supposed to get the disease six months earlier in the timeline according to Trunks, but due to the timeline changing it happened six months later than it was supposed to, which Goku off guard
Disagree it doesn’t hold up. Budokai 2 and 3 hold up but Budokai 1 doesn’t.
