You dont have to suppert the crossmember. The bolt between the 2 bolts you unscrew is keeping it in place. Engine hangs in 3 mounts so the pressure is divided.
This is what i thought to, until i climbed under my car t take the bumper out, undid the 2 bumper bolts on the passenger side and the cross member nearly landed on my head because the bolt that was supposed to be holding it up had snapped. thankfully i hadn't undone the other side yet. so when working on old crust cars, id say "yes you do have to support the cross member as you never know what condition something is in until you work on it, and better safe than having the cross member and engine fall on your head"
