Meh, Mitchell's go for more than that, but they're really nice refurbs. In video, I'm seeing stock fitment issues and serious pitting under the new bluing.... they were in rough shape. People in YT comments rarely put their money where their mouth is anyway though. 'I'd buy if you made this!' -Doesn't buy it when they do. YT people are cheapo trolls.
I don’t understand the attraction to such rifles. People will believe anything the internet tells them nowadays. Mitchell’s Mausers are refurbished and humped up fake garbage just like these. No collector value or original rifle left. “ACT FAST” “ALL MATCHING” “ORIGINAL”, yeah eff off internet. I’d rather spend 3k plus (yes I have) on a completely legit matching example. I understand that not everyone can do that, I really get it, but it’s something to aim for instead of collecting garbage. You might as well collect cigarette butts at that point.
@@deadeyeddanny A Mitchell's? Not for $1600+. Did recently get a Yugo captured (and refurbed) Sauer CE43 K98K. Still has the dirty birds! More enjoyable to shoot than Bloke on the Range led me to believe...
@Isaac Woolley They're not 'destroying' the 'originality' any more than most collectors do. The guns become neglected by the collectors, begin to rust, and then all the rust and finish with it gets removed with some kroil and fine steel wool. Or worse. You can tell from the pitting scars under the new bluing that these guns were very rough. They came out of AFRICA, which should be a great indicator of their true condition. No one collects K98K's to get AFRICAN 'originality,' they get them for WW2 'originality.' Well that was lost in sheds in Ethiopia. No one wants essence of Africa in their German dirty bird guns...
You can buy an unmessed with factory original bolt only mismatch for this price.... people just don't have the paitience to look for one. There are very specific values on K98 varieties and these complete mismatch refurbs fall into the Russian capture territory, $600-$700...
A Russian capture refinished still has history, albeit postwar. But a JRA refinished? Between the lack of authenticity and the reviews on the rifles they refurbished out of Ethiopia, these might be worth even less than a Russian capture on the open market.
Less than Yugo capture I'd think. My Yugo capture is great. The guns in video, honestly, they've had MAJOR rust events that took their original finish and left serious pitting....
Original, no refurb guns are worth $1200. These are not worth that price a all. If you were foolish enough to but one of these, you just screwed yourself out of hundreds of dollars that holds only name in collectors value.
OOOOF! These look like they were very pitted before rebluing. Based on the metal condition and the painted on rack numbers, I am guessing these came from Ethiopia. No mention of bore condition either. Looks like Mitchell's is starting to get competition.
For the budget minded collector, there are other options: Russian captures, Yugo captures that still maintain the German markings, or what I did - Buy a cheap K98k sporter and install it on a surplus Yugo capture K98k wood stock. I now have a more "authentic" K98k for $600.
The thick butt plate and sight hood came after 1940, and the solid style front barrel clamp is late war production. It looked like all the pre 1941 rifles had later hardware on them.
Geez, for that much I might as well go get a Bring Back or non RC 98k Mauser. Just last week, there was a RC in VG+ in my local gun classifieds for $500.
If you do want the history of an actual 98k, the Russian capture ones can found for well under the 1200 that these guys are asking.... Maybe even as cheap as $600. Both guns are gonna imports so that one might have a capture mark or a peened marking doesn’t really equate to a $600 difference. Neither allows anyone to maintain the illusion that someone’s grandpa brought it home from Normandy or something.
You can lie to yourself, but don't lie to us. You bought the Yugo because it was cheap. Don't church it up. The reason these old milsurps are worth why they are, the history they represent, and supply vs demand. A Savage Axis or Ruger American is 'better' and cheaper than a Yugo Mauser, and yet you bought the Yugo...
There’s a strong chance they don’t shoot great... these are obviously from the Ethiopian stockpile, many of which have sewer pipe bores. So unless they also rebarreled them too, it’s a gamble.
hobofactory I didnt realize they’re ethiopian. 1200 is insane in that case and from what i have heard you are correct about the barrels. Well might make an expensive wall hanger lol.
I just purchased a bnz 45 single bolt rune that some idiot reblued. I was going to restore it but the 1945 stocks are a little pricey for a restoration on a reblued gun.
Refurbished from classic firearms means these rifles were in such terrible shape we sent them off to be “refurbished“ so we could sell them at an inflated price. The sewer pipe bore is still intact.
How many friends can you refer on the giveaway? Been trying to figure this out on the last few giveaways. If you do not lock down how many are allowed, people will use fake accounts to skyrocket the entries making the average person very unlikely to win.
Aren't all originals going for less than $1,000? I've seen some lots at auctions with multiple rifles from around WWII going for 2,000 and the lots had 3-4 rifles.
Just depends, but short answer is no. All original and matching in high condition is more like $2k these days. But these prices are pretty damn high for what they are. The “not safe the shoot” full kreigsmodell with late sight was probably the most valuable gun in the lot imo.
Just bought a wonderful, Russian capture refurb for $500 perfect for re-enacting and shooting which is exactly why I got it. If I had $1200 to spend on a K98 , I’d seek out a good condition, mostly matching “ vet bring back “ K98 in unmolested configuration.

How do these rifles have any collectible value if they are completely refinished? Collectors look for original finish and patina.

The refurbishment is a bit of a turnoff to me. Unless they were completely in the white, I think it would’ve been better to leave them.
Look at the pitting. They were extremely rusty, to the point no one would want them except to refurb.
Is there an option for the highly rust pitted versions?

Why is this not a surprise. A refinished gun being sold for way more than its worth at Classic. This is some Mitchel's Mauser level heresy
