Nicolas Flamel was a well-known alchemist and only known maker of the Philosopher's Stone. I’ve always wondered just how effective the Elixir of Life was, how it worked, and how it sustained the person way beyond their lifespan so if you were like me and found yourself quite shocked at how frail Flamel appeared in the latest Fantastic Beasts trailer then you need to watch todays video on why I think he's so feeble.
Why is Nicolas Flamel so weak? Is the Elixer Of Life a flawed creation?

There is actually a book series called the alchemists that explains this, essentially the elixir of life keeps you at the age you took the elixir, and every second you wait after the elixir wears off ages you the years you didn't age, until you take the elixir again, which would need to be taken around every century or so.

At least his method leaves his soul intact, thus he and his wife could cross over once they died.

I was not at all shocked to see that Nicholas Flamel looking frail in the trailer. In the first place, the idea of immortality's being a curse without perpetual youth has a been fictional and mythic staple for millennia (I don't exaggerate). It's worth noting, in fact, that Albus Dumbledore implied Nicolas and his wife to be tired of their immortal lives in the very first novel, and frailty would fit in with that.
Also, there's another trope whereby an immortality potion has to be taken in periodic doses, in order to "renew" the user. This concept was used with regard to H. Rider Haggard's "She," DC Comics' Ra's al Ghul, the old Fu Manchu stories, and even Disney's "Tangled,'" to name a few. Nicolas Flamel may simply be another case in point, with plenty of precedent in both British and fantasy literature.

    • @Zarcaz96
      @Zarcaz96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Indeed. don't recall the name of the novel, but in it the main character wish for, and is granted immortality. In his case, he retain his youth, but he has to watch all he come to care for eventually die, and if I recall correctly, he ends up the last person on earth, being left utterly alone on the waste of a planet "cursed" to walk it until the end of time..... Moral of the story is the same though, immortality is a curse.

I have a few ideas as to flamel's appearance
1 and most likely a philosophers stones elixir of life takes years to make so every sixty years or so he drinks the elixir and de-ages back to a twenty year old
2 your "half life" is because flamel was unwilling to make a stone with human souls so the stone is not perfect only slowing the aging process instead of halting it
3 the flamel we see in the trailer is a red herring the stone gives flamel complete control over his body so uses the old man fesade' to keep people off his tail... Or just to make a joke he is a friend of dumbledore after all

  • @zeveria7206
    @zeveria7206 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I figured Flamel made the stone when he was older--given what an incredible creation it is--and around ...60? 80? He started drinking the elixir. He might not have even realized, at first, that the elixir needed to continuously need to be drunk so maybe it took 10 more years before he realized he was aging and started drinking it. But what about the times he forgot to drink it? Say he's on holiday and forgot the elixir, so he ages a week until he gets home. If we look at the elixir as a pause button, every slip up Flamel makes regarding the elixir brings him a step closer to death. By the end of his life, he could have "3 hours on the clock" so to speak and he's just desperately drinking elixir to keep himself from reaching the end.
The elixir might not be to blame at all. Wizards grow old and even more feebler than muggles since they can last longer. The elixir may simply be keeping him in this state because he didn't start drinking it until he was already old and even then he would have had days where he had forgotten or didn't have his elixir on him at the time.

  • @Trustworthy_McLegitimate

If the wizards just have a better understanding of biology and biochemistry, they wouldnt need the Philosopher Stone.
Dude, youre forgeting that there are actual animals that can live a really long time, some even forever due to superior regenerative abilities. Its about telomerase repairs and regeneration, about genes that are responsible for regenerating limbs and stuff.
But I guess since the wizards think science is too beneath them, eternal youth will never happen.
Anyway, as you said about Flamels brain, I think its because unlike all other cell, brain cells do NOT replicate and regenerate. Telomeres get damaged everytime a cell replicates. That damage is why we age. The cells replicate, the telomeres get damaged to the point that it stops cell division. No cell division means no healing. Then we die. And our poor brain dies inside an irepairable body. Sad.
And so Flamel is a zombie... A Full Zombie Alchemist.

If I can throw my hat into this conversation. It possible that the elixer of life has not been perfected yet. By that I mean he looks like that because he hasn't perfected it yet and is still looking for different ingredient so he can make a true elixir of life. It said that the stone produces the elixer of life, but it possible that it only gives you one that semi-elixer, your life extends but it still ages you. He wouldn't have noticed till sometime later when he saw himself age but he would also have not cared since his mind still function and can start testing and perfecting it. But its not like it would be an easy task. Creating a stone is hard enough but creating a perfected elixer, might take half a century.

With Flamel and his wife willing to die to go on their "next adventure" they would take the secrets of making it to the grave, with Dumbledore the remaining one, and with Voldemort being intimidated by him, and that he would rather die than say anything about the stone, the secrets to the Philosopher Stone was lost, Dumbledore dying cementing it beyond salvaging.

Well for starters Flamels stone let him live WAY longer then Voldy did with his horcruxes.
You neither have to massively damage your appearance,or tear your soul when you use the sorcerors stone.
Just saying that the sorcerors stone seems like a vastly superior form of immortality then the horcruxes.
Or at the very least Voldemort could have wisely used them both.
First order of business would be to steal the stone from Flamel,or find out how to create your own.
Then Tom could have preserved his youth all those years as he got stronger towards the first wizarding war.
If he wanted to create his seven horcruxes as a back up strategy, that would have been fine.
If creating them turned his body serpentine,he could have easily restored his body to it's human like appearance with the stone.
Also if his main body was ever destroyed [as it was at Godrics hollow] he would just need to create a new body with the stone, and then put a soul fragment from a horcrux inside as his new main body.
If Voldemort hadn't been too proud to use the stone,he could have returned to power after his curse rebounded on him almost instantly. But because of his arrogance he spent 13 yrs as a ghost basically.

    • @samueleveleigh2767

Probably because voldemort was well aware of the long term effects of the elixer/stone.
I think voldemort was not only afraid of death but being weak (which would invite death) and so by being a feeble old man whos bones break from a handshake would make it increasingly easy to kill him as the years go by.
In comparison a horcrux would preserve the body and soul as it was when made meaning even at 70 yrs old mr riddle was still in his prime (even if you do take into account that wizzards tend to have a much longer life span).
Using a horcux was also much safer, we see how hard it is for harry and the griffindor gang to destory them all whereas to beat the elixer you just need to wait or intentionally sabotage the formula and oops the dark lord dies of old age because snape jr jr put in a cat hair not one from a unicorn.

There’s actually a book series based on Nicholas Flammel and while I do not think they are connected it could have a solution to the elixir. The book says that Nicholas actually ages with the lunar cycle, and every time he drinks the potion, he goes back to looking the age he did when he first took it. So there is a chance he has just not used it in some amount of time.

It is also possible that the Elixir of life was an unexpected by product. The process of making gold has always been the Alchemists first ambition in stories, so complicating the already complex recipe by adding a second function would have only increased the difficulty. It makes more sense to me that the elixir is just a castoff from using the stone when making gold. This could also explain why it looks like an imperfect solution, after finding out what it does Flamel would have been so engrossed in the discovery that he would have jumped on it without a second thought.

Nicolas Flamel is a real person and the philosopher's stone was a widely speculated subject too. Rowling did not create Flamel nor did she create the idea of a magic school - Jill Muphy designed that first. All her beasts derive from mythology apart from dementors.

    • @TheMarkmcr
      @TheMarkmcr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

She may not have mentioned having an inspiration for the dementors, but they are similar to the valkyrie from norse mythology. The valkyrie were originally written as dark creatures that prey on the souls of the dead. The association of ravens with the concept of death may have been derived from them as well. Other instances of norse mythology in the harry potter series include greyback and harry's fight with the basilisk.

Darrian Benford i do not think the stones are comparable. Look at Hohenheim and Father. Okay Hohenheim took damage as his soul eroded but he was around for millenia. Different to flamel. Who "just" had a few centuries. Hohenheim also retained his youth as he literally had the lives of thousands in his body. Flamel clearly aged and as far as we know the elixir of live does not drain the stone and is created using it. It is not the stone itself like in fma. And i kinda doubt flamel butchered 100s of people for science

I think the main reason that Flamel looked so frail would be that he didn't create the stone in his young years but instead in his old age. Think about it - he's the only Wizard known to have created it. Nobody else that we know of has succeeded in it - that's why Flamel is so famous. It's far more likely that he only succeeded in this after decades (maybe even a century) of trying and perfecting alchemy rather than in his twenties when he was still inexperienced. So he studied decades, managed to create the stone when he was about a hundred years or older (wizards live longer than Muggles so him reachingan age of 150 without the elixir should be possible) and then proceeded to take the elixir of life which stopped his aging and froze him in the body of a 100-something year old man as long as he continued to drink it regularly. It didn't give him half a live, its just trapped him inside the the old body he had when he first succeeded in creating the stone.

Another great video, I think your right on the unicorn blood being used as he didn’t look like he had a good life but was alive.

I didn't know it was mispronounced in the movies 😮Because the way they pronounced it in the movies is how we would in french.

      Vraiment? Mais non!
"Beauxbatons" = "beaux" + "batons" (basically just "pretty sticks" when translated into English), so I would pronounce it like the French words, not "boh battens" as in the film.
Et j'ai appris à parler français dès l'âge de six ans. (...but I'm not very good at writing in French, so that might not be quite perfect)

Kenny Boberts Ah my bad xD. En fait la manière dont il l'a prononcer les deux fois étaient plus ou moins bon. "Beauxbatons" should be pronounced like "Bo" not "Bow" and "Baton" like "ba" and "ton" or "thon"--> basically the sound is like the word tuna in french mais avec le préfixe ba.

I always wondered, this is extremely plausible
I think the release of the new trailer almost set set in stone
    Good work buddy

I see all your points and they’re all plausible. And it didn’t surprise me that he would appear old at all but just the fact that such a light tough of the hand could break/fracture it.

In some old alchemical text the creation of the Red elixir or elixir of life is dew that has been collected under the moon, has never seen the sun, and the stone is steeped therein for seven days in darkness. Then it is brought to the first dawn light and drunk as soon as the first rays of the sun shine upon the drinker, but not the elixir itself.
Different text have variations. But once the stone was made to use it was easy enough. The hard part was creating the stone.

I think the reason Flamel was aging so slowly was because he was dividing the elixir of life between himself and his wife. The stone may be able to halt the aging process for a single individual, but it my not be able to make enough elixir to keep two people immortal and from aging. Hence the slowed, but not stopped, lifespan.
