I just tried the razor blade inside a band saw kerf. It works like a charm and way, way better than I expected. Thank you very much for these free "online shop classes".
Spike is the new star of your channel. Seriously, I really appreciate and admire the way you upcycle and reuse things to get the job done. As creative in some ways as some of your pieces. Keep on keepin' on.
Thanks for the tips, Jimmy! The stickyback discs are also called PSA discs (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive). I use them on my 6" air sander. I prefer the PSA discs and my air sander to my ROS - it's lighter, faster, and creates less hand fatigue. Plus the 6" discs are bigger than the 5" ROS discs and seem to last pretty well. Thanks for all the videos - every time I watch one of your videos I want to go out in the shop and make something!
Great tips Jimmy. Like the MDF sanding block with one open and one wrapped side and the put life back in plexiglass tips. Also the last sanding belt is something I never thought of. Thanks, JimE
Hello jimmy, thanks again for compiling these tips..I like the simplicity and practicle nature of all of them. Just shows you that you don't always have to run to the store and buy another gadget, you can customize to your own needs and work on your skills at the same time. Great stuff, video etc
THANKYOU! You have vindicated my opinion on razor blades as scrapers, several times on forums etc I have told people that a razor/utility blade is a great scraper and they don't need to buy "proper" card scrapers with the hassle of sharpening etc. I have always been told I am wrong and that it is a stupid idea, well now I can tell them that if its good enough for Jimmy Diresta then it's good enough for me!
Excellent tips. I especially like salvaging the worn our random orbit sander pads for manual use. You should do an entire video on uses for used planer blades. I can't make myself through them away so have a drawer full!
Another excellent video, I feel as though I'm cheating learning so much in such a short space of time! Really hope we get to see Spike's greek temple getting built.
Really enjoying the tips and tricks videos keep them up theres some really useful ones in there nice to see spike getting some screen time looks just like the big tom cat up my mates garage
Love your videos Jimmy! Awesome craftsmanship. Keep em coming. Would really like to see a tips and tricks on band saws. As far as what blades you use, sizes and TPI. Especially for us beginner woodworkers.
I see a lot of knife makers using the windex trick on their belt sanders and flat sandpaper. I'll look into that rubber backed sandpaper. Paul Sellers has a woodworking master series now available free on TH-cam and he also uses the sandpaper on the glass for chisel and plane sharpening. Great tips!
Hi Jimmy thanks for all your time and effort in making these videos they have been fantastic you have a god given talent so thanks for sharing it with us all I wish u all the best for the future. PS could you please do one special video with your brother like the old days you two make a fantastic and funny team if u would I think everyone would love it... Thank you
One of my favourite products we had at the shop is a 3M sticky-back sandpaper. It's about 2 1/2" wide, and comes on a roll maybe 6" dia. It fits in a special dispenser and you basically use it like masking tape. They stick very well to just about anything, and we had special sponge pads with a shaped handle that they worked well on. I especially liked using it on small wooden scraps to flat-sand small defects. You could also easily stick it around dowels, or back on itself. It comes in various grist, but we mainly used 100, 120, 150 (the most), and 180. The closest I see on their site currently is called "Stikit" sheet roll (45 yards). They have "Red" and "Gold" but the stuff we had was kind of a pink colour.
A bunch of great tips .. thank you for sharing all these neat tricks .. Here's one for you, whenever you plan on using wet sandpaper soak it over night in soapy water .. makes them work a lot better and not "pile up" so much ..you might even already know that, but it's a guitar builders trick .. :) I hope that made sense .. have a good one
Automotive dual action sanders use a sticky back paper as well as the little bench mount disc/belt sanders. I knew I kept my old planer blades for something. I was going to rig some sort of glue scraper out of them, but I'll try what you said too. Thanks!
I just finished scraping paint off one of my knives with a razor blade about 20 minutes ago. I love razor blades, they are so useful. I keep about 4 on top of a dresser so I'm never without one. Edit: Spike is also a boss.
Hi Jimmy. About making plexiglass look better I was able to do it carefuly with heat, using a gas torch and it worked out pretty well. Offcourse it only works if it doesn't have much damage on it and the scratches are not too deep. By the way, love your videos and nice of you to let Spike make is debut on your chanel.
I see you using 3M alot, which im sure lots of people do. Its nice to see since im a Minnesotan and thats where 3M started and its headquarters is located. also, lucky cat. I wish i got to hang around the shop with you
A lot of really great tips here I'm defintely gonna use. If you needed a specific curve for sanding, you could just glue two pieces of something flexible together, to make and hold the curve, then just glue your sandpaper onto it.
Good video Jimmy. Scrapers are the way to go once you get the hang of sharpening them. Those sitcky back discs are used on disc sanders like a 12" or on combo disc/belt sanders the disc is a stick on, I got a conversion kit for mine you stick on a Velcro disc and then use the hook and loop ones.
I have really enjoyed your videos and have been a carpenter for over 50 years. Thanks
I've lost count the amount of sanding blocks I've made because of this tips video,
You can make all shapes & sizes. Fantastic
Wonderful tips Jimmy!

Where would the wood shop world be without 3M? So many adhesives. Like DiResta, the 3M logo is everywhere!
Nice! especially the last one where you take a sanding belt and put it over a piece of wood. So simple yet so handy.
Love it how Spike's covered in wood shavings... definitely your cat!

Awesome video. It seems like sanding and finishing is always the most laborious part of the process when it comes to making anything.
Jimmy, I have to say the tips are awesome. Thank you for sharing your skills and time with your fellow woodworkers.

I use the small adhesive circular sandpaper for my mini disk sander. They adhere very well and leave no residue on my machine. I like them
Very practical, very smart, really enjoyed it.
Obrigado
