  • This is an ASMR style video digging into some interesting facts about the Great Lakes - it's aim is to help you sleep, relax, and/or distract your busy mind while learning something too! We take a look at some maps, turn pages in a very large glossy paged almanac, trace some lakes on a map, and hopefully learn some facts about Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Michigan!

This is such an awesome video. I was a lifeguard on Lake Michigan for 8 years and have always found it to be a fascinating natural wonder.
You are right, Lake Michigan can be incredibly dangerous. The statistics on drownings are very interesting. Most drownings occur along the Michigan shoreline because many beaches in the state of Michigan are not staffed with lifeguards.
Rip currents (they technically are currents because lakes don’t have tides of any sort) are a contributing factor. Super scary to get caught in one, but lifeguards have been proven to significantly reduce drownings… some municipalities see them as an unnecessary expense, unfortunately. In my 8 years as a guard, the only ever drowning we saw on our beaches occurred after hours when lifeguards were gone, in rip current conditions or non rip current conditions.
Sorry I got on my soap box there. Passionate about the subject. Thanks for the video.

Having grown up in southwest lower Michigan, just wanted to say that lake-effect on Lake Michigan usually affects northwest/north central Indiana and southwest lower Michigan (most of which is called Michiana by us locals) and usually not the Chicago area itself, though it can happen there as well. Prevailing winds in the winter are almost always out of the northwest or west - the storms cross the lake, intensify, and then set up the snow bands we've come to know and love (?) so well.
    Good videos - subbed!

I live a stones throw away from the Trenton Channel, (Detroit River) near the mouth of Lake Erie. You’re very right about the pollution. We have made great progress in the last couple decades. Much of the pollution was due to large factories operating on the rivers edge. The wildlife is much healthier in recent years and has become a national and worldwide fishing destination, specifically walleye fishing.

After watching this Michigan video, I was thinking a really interesting video you could do is showing how all the land in what is now the United States broke down into different Native American tribes/nations before the Europeans arrived. You could use your laminated US map that you often draw on to show the borders between and the locations of the different tribes, and also write the different tribe names on your index cards and cut them up. Would be quite informative! 🙂 Also, I loved this Great Lakes video as a fellow Michigander (originally)

@@Nofrillsasmr Oh, totally understandable that you don't want it to be disrespectful in any way...would be more of an educational video and relaxing drawing of borders and writing of tribe names. I would preface it with a disclaimer kinda like with your State of the Union video that it is non-political and just a basic depiction of pre-Euro North America and that there is lots more history involved. Your discussion of all the dealings with the tribes in this Great Lakes video was really interesting, and seemed very respectful 💕 Whatever you choose to do, I'm sure it will be a great video 🙂

Technically, ships (liners or salties) can go all the way to Duluth, but the big boats (lakers) can only navigate the Upper Lakes-Huron, Michigan and Superior. They won’t fit through the Welland. They barely fit through the Soo.

I enjoy the Native American History of the Great Lakes. Theres so many different tribal groups and many of which have very fascinating histories. The languages spoken are dying out but yet are trying to be preserved. Huron is the French word for the Wendat people. Ontario is iroquoian word meaning large or great lake. Erie is the name of an Iroqioisn speaking people who lived in Ohio, NY and Pennsylvania. Mostly in the upper part of NY and northwestern Pennsylvania and Northern ohio. The real name is Kahkwa but given the name Riieronons by other Iroquoia groups. Michigan is an Algonquin word also meaning large lake. Most of the Indigenous peoples referred to lakes large body of water basically. Superior is the most deepest and dangerous lake of all the Great lakes. 1975 the Edmund Fitzgerald was an example of how strong the waves and currents were and the ship sank into the bottom taking along its crew. 1976 The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (a haunting song) was written by Gordon Lightfoot.
Much of the Great lakes have mysterious stories about its depths and events that occured from the earliest occupation of the area to now

Apologies. I only meant that they worked together with the French for many years to fight the 5 Nations who were trying to take the Huron’s land. This was my understanding anyway. By “friendly” I guess I meant they worked together. I do understand how bad it was for indigenous people. Thanks for your comment and the reminder!
