They made her face chubby but not the body, how tf?
It's like whoever designed the model planned on making her look a certain way, but then at the last minute their boss was like, "Yo, nah. This won't fly. Our ESG rating is too low as is, make a plan.", and so they just made her face really unappealing.
One of the first things I noticed was how disproportionate her face fat was to her body fat, to have a face with that much fat compared to the body is not common.
I've noticed that Body-Positive people are typically the worst at drawing fat people. Chubby Chasers do a better job at drawing fat people by far.
Same with Horizon forbidden west, Alloy has a very slim petite body but a massive fat face like a 55 year old obese diabetic woman that lives on McDonald's.

her old design actually had thematic weight to it in the story. Them borking the character design up to this degree can literally be chalked up, at least partially, to not understanding the story or themes of the og SH2 if it was done intentionally. This, in the community, is what we call a bad sign.
At least from what ive seen the remake basically looks like theyre redrafting every asset, line, and scene without understanding or appreciating why it was built a certain way to begin with. Without that understanding, this might come out like the drop in quality from breaking bad to metastasis. The same lines, the same framework, but none of the soul, passion or skill. Like translating a script over literally without exploring the nuance of what came before, cuz the ones remaking it never noticed it was there.
To anyone who might say "she just looks a little worse, whats the problem," the way angela looked was purposeful in the og, there were reasons and rationale to it that built off of it and how weirdly she acts. Little changes can snowball if a bunch are made without taking the care to understand what came before

the OG cutscene was blanketed in fog right up to the camera, obscuring everything, and the visuals of it were fantastic, eerie, and dream-like. new one is way too clear, and saturated, and doesn't look nearly as good (which is weird to say considering there's still technically a lot of fog visible)

The weird thing about the demake is that her body is almost 1 for 1 proportioned like in the original, but her head is bizarrely oversized. Not just in excess fat, but her skull looks oversized, like they took a completely different character's head and put it on Angela's model. The character's face doesn't even look like the actress they supposedly used for reference.

It also looks nothing like the original so turn down the gas light please. But noted that some women can have round face shapes but Sophia’s skin is tight to her face, not this face of a 160lb 5’3” housewife of an 8 year old.
Don't worry about the other guy. I will say you're only slightly off, though, but only by a little. Some people can have puffy faces like that, but it is quite rare. As you've said, its almost always overweight people with faces like that and that is true. Thus, ultimately, the devs remake of this characters facial proportions is not faithful to vast vast majority of what women actually look like. In another example being the redo of Alloy (from Horizon Zero Dawn), it just shows how the devs are being disingenuous, intentionally destroying attractive females in gaming, and showing how much they exist in a fantasy lala land.
I talked about this in another comment, but since Asmon knows nothing about SH, he mostly thinks it's just a negative reaction from "uglyfying" to a beautiful character. That's not it, for context, this has nothing to do with fap or atracttion. It's about the core of the character, Angela's character was suppose to have this contradiction of being beautiful, but always detesting her appearance, feeling ugly, even hatred towards her appearance and self, she is supposed to represent the Seductress, a woman that "seduced" her father and brother, she didn't accept this role, she had no choice, she was force to it, as an internelized guilt, r*pe, and abuse imposed on her by her mother, father and brother.
Angela is a character written as a young adult that suffered intense sexual and physical abuse when she was younger from her father and, probably, her brother. The fact that she wears loose clothes that covers her whole body and speaks like a child, even though she has the appearance of a beautiful woman, in the original game, are some of the consequences of that abuse in her psyche. She became suicidal, aloof and infantilized, not capable of moving on from the traumatic experiences and guilt, still blaming herself for all the hell that happened to her and the harm she caused to others. This self-harmful behavior was internalized by her and intensified due to her own mother, that maybe, as a way of coping with her agressive behavior from her drunk husband and some jealousy from her own daughter, would tell Angela that she deserved what she was suffuring since she was a seductive woman (in the game the Tablet of the Seductress serves to atone to Angela's sins of killing her father and brother). After James saves Angela, he find her in the hotel on fire, she's delusional, happy to finally killing her (Abstract) daddy (she calls him this ways), looking at a male corpse without genitalia, glued to frame, burning. When she sees James, she sees her mother, it probably is due to her own distorted way of trying to embrace the only ones that "saved" her from hell, the first "her ideal mother" and secod, James, the only people that she thought cared for her. But she soon regain her senses, maybe finally realizing that her mother was a monster just as her father and brother was, and then says to James: "Thank you for saving me, but I wish you wouldn't had. Even mama said it, I deserved what happened", James respond "no, that's not right" and she responds back "No... don't pity me. I'm not worth it... Or maybe... you think you can save me. Will you love me...? Take care of me...? Heal all my pain...? ...Hmph... That's what I thought", she then decide that she wants to end her life and asks for her knife back, and James refuses, Angela says "Saving it for yourself?", the imply here is pretty obvious, James's suicidal thoughts are much more heavy by this point on the game as he is dealing with his sin of murder the love of his life. Angela then walks towards the fire, walking up the stairs, James says as the flame separate the both of them "It's hot as hell in here..." to what she replies "You see it too? For me, it's always like this.", implying that, for her, that place was always hell.
I don’t see a problem, just needs some polishing and a few tweaks. Not everyone is a supermodel and her character shows how stress and trauma can age you. (Although I do think her face looks heavyset and doesn’t belong to her body, maybe slim it a tad?)

That character has nothing to do with cgi vs ingame cutscene. The ingame model before rendering or texturing has a jawline that and face that can easily be made more feminine yet was chosen not to. If we were talking about bleakness of the skin, or lighting then you would have a point, but we are talking about a sort of "statue" or "underlying skeleton" before paint is put on it, clearly this jawline is due to the 3D model being bad rather than it having to do with graphics.
Even Rock Lee would be jealous of those eyebrows.

Angela being hot is one of the *key* things about her character. Angela is *really* attractive, but also, not *entirely* there. She's a special needs case, but she's also hot. The... the whole crux of her character *relies* on her being as hot as she is, because of what people *do* to her *because* she's hot, but with an underdeveloped brain. There are moments in the game that only work within their context if Angela is attractive, because one of James' challenges has to do entirely with women who arent his wife being hot, and how he feels about hot women who arent his wife.
The fact James *doesnt* try to hurt Angela, despite her being vulnerable, and hot, is *important* to *BOTH* of their characters. Like, you could argue it's fucking *VITAL* that Angela is hot, to juxstapose how James treats Mary, Maria, Angela, and Laura -- the 4 women in the game who he interacts with. Maria is a hot woman who vaguely looks like his wife, Angela is a hot woman who acts like a child, Mary is a plain woman who is his wife, and Laura is a plain child.
If Angela isn't conventionally attractive, the scenes she has with James, and the scenes Laura has with James, where they suggest he's out the kind of guy who's into hot girls and wants to do adult things with hot women, lose a *lot* of bite when the only "hot girl" he meets is Maria. Likewise, Angela *not* being conventionally attractive hurts *her* story, since her whole thing is that she gets victim blamed for all the terrible things done to her, and one of the reasons for that is because she's hot, which she internalizes! She *hates* that she's pretty, because being pretty has done *nothing* but invite bad people to hurt her.
Listen, I don't think the team is doing to meet a DEI quota. I think the characters in silent hill, *especially* silent hill 2, are supposed to be "normal" people and they just assumed that making Angela look like your average HR manager would be fine, to make her seem more sympathetic, by, essentially, making her more pathetic.
Angela's final moment in the game, is, quite literally, about her being hot. There's a lot of subtleties in Silent Hill 2, but, Angela being in a rough situation because she's hot is about as subtle as a house on fire.
If there is an agenda, this thing with this character just proves that the agenda really does come first before making a good game, or having some things make sense. That, or these devs didn't get the memo about their own game they were making. And this is crucial to Silent Hill, because of all the symbolism.
It's mind boggling. I don't understand why they would do this. Now those story beats may just be immersion breaking to the average player when they're presented. Unless, they want to make it a point that *all* women struggle in that way, not just the conventionally attractive ones...

I haven't play Silent hill 2, but from looking at other comments I think the reason some female characters are sexualised is to represent MC's sexual frustrations and the design for nurse along with other characters were also changed to make them more PG. If this is the case then redesigns to make characters less attractive doesn't make sense according to the story.

I'll be honest, I couldn't care less about her character. Being attractive is not relevant to her story.

The irony is, I HATED the first trailer where James looked like a 45 year old playing a high schooler. But when I saw the actual game screenshots (wide angle) I thought "Well, other than the faces, that's not bad." Then I got the close ups.... And just like the Maria from the live action movie (that's right, there's a third), I have several problems with it.
Konami is like a yo-yo for my approval: hate it, like it, hate it, like it. And the sad thing is, just like a yo-yo, when the momentum stops, it's normally limp and not fun.
Angela was never hot she was depressed in silent hill 2, the new look kind of fits her character after really knowing her back story and its weird that people wants her attractive

Scene in the remake looks like it filmed inside some studio with theatrical smoke at the floor.
Also there is a sharp shadow from angela's right hand at 0:30 , adding more to the feel of studio filming. In the fog only ambient shadows are possible and they are very blurry.

Fun Fact: The original old character design of Angela was based off of Actress/Model Sandra Bullock.
The person/people in charge of remodeling the previous character, guaranteed, saw how attractive the old one was, felt a sting of jealousy and went, “Nobody really looks like that in real life,” then curdled the character’s looks. I promise that’s probably what happened.

Angela is one of the characters in silent hill that represents one of those tablet stones called the "Seductress"
Angela being the only daughter her mother blamed her appearance for causing her brother and father to be very intimate with her, this led Angela to repeatedly blame herself that she deserved of what had happened to her.
Also her appearance could hint you what some of the r victims would be like if not given help
- eating disorders (her pale face and dark eyes could hint to lack of iron)
-sleep deprivation (due to being schizophrenic and paranoid,)
-Intense mood swings
-depression.
Appearance is one of the important factors when you're making a character who's in deep in trauma, so if they're gonna make Angela look like she is physically healthy yet VERY mentally ill... Then no this is not the Angela Orosko I know 🙄

I mean you can hear it in her dialogues that her mother is insecure with herself which is why as you said she's delusional, and apart from her and the s'a victims you were talking about, she never gets help from it.
Which means due to her Attractiveness she still gets the blame in the end... No one had helped her overcome the idea of her being the seductress, not even women.
And if Angela was unattractive, she'd less likely to be paranoid of men, because if you're unattractive less men would try to assault you, nor manipulate you just to get in your pants. Her experience would've been so much better if she looked like what modern Angela looks like, her mother wouldn't have blamed her or anyone could've helped her overcome it... But humans are insane, the idea of "it's your fault that happened because you're wearing a skirt!" Is applied to Angela, by her mother and her other peers around her due to being attractive, which could also be the reason why she hadn't recovered and thinks she's the blame of all of this... That is why she represents one of silent hill tablets called the "Seductress".
And about the faces yes her face features are easily acquired by being depressed or having any problems because she fits that face and that face can tell how horrifying her experience is. Like compare the both of them, one is lacking iron, looks mysterious, and crazy, and the other one looks well fed, just sad, and looks like she's finding her mother with an intent to reunite with her rather than murder.
If anyone thinks people are over-reacting to the changes made to Angela's appearance, just remember that she was literally THE FACE on THE CASE of the original game.

@@RyuSaarva I remember being a kid and first seeing Silent Hill 2's case at blockbuster. For some reason it gave me the chills. Resident Evil and other horror game covers were gun-toting action heroes or monsters. Silent Hill 2's case was just the blurred expressionless face of a woman lying on the floor. Even at that young age it made it feel mysterious, adult, and memorable. I prefer that case to the others.
