Rode my 1190 from Portland OR to Coldfoot AK and back in 17 days. 6000 miles, loads of highway and dirt roads and the bike made it all seem easy while fully loaded with cold weather clothes, camping gear, drone, and my 180 lb self. Made it over 250 miles on one tank of fuel two times with all that gear on it, what a machine.

You’re the person who introduced me to the dual sport/adventure market many years ago. I’d like to inform you that I just bought an Africa Twin after wanting one since 2016. It’s my first “street” bike. It’s been amazing so far. Thank you!

What timing. I have been considering selling my 2014 1190R and getting something smaller. then I watch this video and you convince me to keep her. It was my dream bike and has taken me places I only dreamed of going. I cut my teeth on a Suzuki 650 Vstrom for a few years and when I got on the 1190R it was almost like the bike drove itself. Off-road became so much easier, road trips to meet up with buddies to motocamp became less of a chore and it gave me such confidence. I guess I had forgotten all of that. Thanks for rekindling my relationship with my dream girl. Good luck with the auction Tyler!

Nah. I would keep that beast. I am not letting go of my 1090 anytime soon. Its bigger, taller and heavier but for the "liter" class of adv bikes, its fairly light in comparison, high power and with improved off road capabilities. 1190 is a fantastic beast.

@@interceptordave I considered it also but 790 is still 470lbs wet before adding mods. I think a 701LR is a better alternative due to less weight, great suspension and electronics.

@@reinhart482 Good point about the weight alright. 701LR was discontinued at the end of 2020, my guess is to prevent it distracting potential 701 Norden buyers...

In The last month going 50+ down a major arterial a SUV pulled truck in front of me and then literally stopped because he couldn’t get into a parking lot. I clamped on the brakes swerved to get around behind it I swear I slid the bike and before I blink I was around the car. I didn’t even see going around the car the electronics on this bike saved my life!! None of the other bikes I’ve ever owned would have done the magic this bike did, KTM rocks!!!

I have the same bike, and came to the same conclusions: I wouldn't swap it for any other bike on the market, no matter the price. I'm not saying it's the best bike ever made, it's just perfect for me and it fits my needs so well in a way that I was not expecting to be possible.
It's a MY2014, I bought it a couple years ago with 43'000km under her belt and stacked up 25k more, 50% commuting on highway, 5% offroad. Tried it with all controls off and thought I was going to return it to the dealer after a couple miles, Turning on the electronics turned it in a very enjoyable machine, never felt it was too much for me again. I took it in easy enduro rides in the muddy woods along with specialized bikes and felt comfortable even with no experience at all. It is a commuter, a tourer, a fun bike and an off road capable beast, with appropriate tires. Too bad there is no bike matching the stats of this, I will have hard time when I will be forced to change it for something else because of the emission restrictions here in Europe.

I bought a new 1190 in 2016 after having a previous 2014 model. Also bought a new 1290 SAS in 2017. Both are keepers ... bargain of the used motorcycle market are the 2014 to 2016 KTM 1190s.

I test rode a 1090 and that bike was absolutely determined to introduce me to a cop or an EMT. Like right. effing. NOW! I managed to complete my demo day ride without either happening, but the bike was clearly beyond my skill level. I cannot imagine ever becoming able to extract even a fraction of this bike's potential.
That said, this 1190 is an amazing bang for the buck bike in this category, for the right rider. You dont have to be Chris Burch, but if you want to take this bike onto trails, you probably should be already taking a GS800 or DR650 to its limits.
Or stick to the pavement and gravel roads on your excellent ride previously owned by a cool and famous guy.
Either way, have fun, be well and Peace!

    1190R owner here 🙋‍♂️
Had her since 2016 and I still love her
You’re so right, they really do surprise sport bike guys off the line and up to about 100 on road. And even on those nice twisty back roads
Off road she is heavy yes if coming from a MX bike but she handles her self really well and I feel better off-road with her than my 250 SX-F at times!
Brilliant video, you live in a beautiful area, those go-pro shots at the end were stunning!
Shame to hear your selling her, no doubt it’s a tough decision but you got a family and you gotta do what’s right by them 100%, respect that being your reasoning.
    All the best man!

I was on a klr650 and my buddy kept bugging me to go to the ktm demo day coming up (2016). I went, I rode the 1190R and bought it that day. Many, many miles later I haven't found a replacement for what it can do. It's my grocery getter, canyon carver, and BDR trail bike. It is a commitment bike (height, power, weight) and is in no way right for beginners or those not very competent already. Its not that it isn't easy to ride, its TOO easy, which will have you deep in a dirt corner before you know it, or well into 100+ on the highway before it feels fast. If respected its just amazing. I see a ton sold in pristine condition as the rider just wasn't up to handling that level of bike. The street version isn't as capable off road, my friend had one, was a better rider than me, and I easily out rode him on dirt. He finally stripped off the 50/50's and made it into his touring bike which he loves, drags pegs and everything. Worth a bid but I've already got one.

I had a fast Benelli 1130 Amazonas. Same power but lighter, an 1130 in a 899 frame. The 1190 doesn't disappoint it is the Swiss army knife. It will go there if you are up to it. Very capable on and off road.

I've been waiting for ages for you to do this review! When I was shopping for a bike a 3 years ago this was the ONLY bike that met all my criteria. Sport bike like power, 19' front spoke wheels, off road and touring capable, oh and in my budget. If budget wasn't an issue then the only other bike was the mulitstarda enduro. It's such as great bike but. I have ridden the 1090r and it felt significantly lighter off the kickstand and going slow over obstacles. There was alot more going on than just removing the centre stand to make the bike much better to ride. It was also a lot smoother and a little smaller. The other issue I have is slow tight corners on the dirt, like switchbacks. Oh and the F'ing heat. It's a hot bike but some mods can help with that. But 3 years on and I still love it. It sit's in it's own unique segment of the ADV market and I've been spoiled, which makes it hard to buy another bike. I now want a more dirt orientated bike but I don't want to give up power or the electronic suspension or the power modes or the safety features. If only KTM made such a bike.... Oh wait they did. It's called the 1190r....:)

Love my 1090R. "The Mighty 1090!" or "The Trophy Truck on Two Wheels," they call it. Take it everywhere, double or single track, trails, twisties, gravel, snow or mud.....sand is still scary but what a fun bike! Of the "Liter" sized Adv bikes, its definitely up there among the best. Excellent suspension for tuning for your needs(twisties, weight, off road etc), traction control is basic, lots of mods, looks good. Its a tall bike which can make it difficult at times but the suspension really helps. If all you do is take it down gravel roads or whatever don't feel bad. Taking it through the tight stuff is no joke but its fun. Power can be managed with some good clutch and throttle control. Tight places are more difficult, yes. It would be like finessing a Baja Truck down an ATV trail. ;)

I've got a KTM 1190 Adventure 'R' which I've got fully tricked-out with Rottweiler Performance intake & fuelling systems, plus a Scotts steering damper, also a Wings Short Exhaust (sans baffle) and with a Wings heat deflector system... plus a stack of other farkles to improve it's ride qualities & robustness for off road riding (e.g. Rumbux Upper Crash Bars and an AltRider Skid Plate, axle sliders, etc).
Having left behind the deserts of the UAE & Oman, these days I ride in the vast expanses of red-dirt-road Africa and, suffice to say, that KTM goes like a veritable guided missile... and off-road it's a total joy to ride, especially so when standing up on the 'Black Dog CycleWorks' foot-pegs that I've farkled onto it.
Put bluntly, there is no way I would sell it;... indeed they can bury it with me (and, with all that performance, it will indeed more than probably be the death of me... but, if you gotta go, then what a great way to go it would be!).
Should add that I also own a BMW R1200 GSA (for on-road riding) and a Royal Enfield 500 Classic (for the grins).

I have the same color 1190 I bought back in 2015 for 14K and I love it. It is such a good bike, does everything well. my only complaint is the stock seat, can’t ride longer than 1-2hrs on it so I had to get the KTM aftermarket seat which is marginally better.

Nice review, too bad you felt the need to sell. Got an 1190S when it first came out and rode it 250 miles today in the NH hills. This Beast loves the throttle... twisties, unimproved roads, and cruises the freeway at speed. Still loving it! Looked at Duc but, mine is paid for!
FWIW your brake fluid looks a tad dark.

Bought a 1190r last year. It was still in its crate. So "new" but years old. My first motorcycle! I am still scared of it, but I push through my fear and am learning more each day. The offroad tires make me nervous but they seem to grip ok. I take it on the dirt roads where I live and appreciate the rider modes because it allows some rear fish tailing fun. It is tall and heavy, the only drawback in my opinion. I think a rekluse (spelling?) Clutch would be a nice mod.

  • @jimaltonen8879
    @jimaltonen8879 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also think very highly of the 1190 vs the 1190R...which is why when I was shopping in 2015 I bought the S instead of the R...
    1) I was concerned and intimidated about such a big bike in the dirt (which is the only place I prefer to ride) and the 1190S is an inch lower, plus the seat can be moved to a lower position. Nearly 2” lower seat height!
    2) A big bike off road meant I wanted maximum traction. The 1190S has 1” wider front and rear tires than the R.
    3) I have never known how to set up a suspension, so I wanted something to do it for me.
    4) I wasn’t sure if I wanted lean angle sensing, but I was intimidated by the bike and wanted as much safety as I could get. It saved me from wrecking 2-3 times. Don’t know how bad it would have been and don’t care. The R does not have the lean angle sensing.
    5) The bigger windshield helps. My buddy who bought the R also bought a larger windshield.
    6) The S was $2,000 cheaper than the R because they would not haggle on the R and had a very low dealer rebate. So I bought the S and used the money I saved for TKC 80’s and crash bars so I would be closer to the R off road. I had so much left over, I bought upper crash bars, rear crash bars with rotopax, heated grips, the Bad Fuel/ABS/TC settings dongle, turn signal cancellation upgrade and a Black Dog Skidplate...none of which my buddy’s 1190R had!
    7) The 1190S had a 2 year warranty, the R was 6 or 12 mos.
    8) I did not like the close fender on either bike and thought mud would clog it. It only did it once, but I added the R fender to my S which gave me a 1” larger gap. You could not do that with the R.
    9) The S rips in the turns due to the smaller rims size, yet the smaller rim has never impacted me in the dirt.
    10) With 15,000 miles of dirt riding on my 1190S, I thought I was outgrowing the suspension. But on the COBDR last week with my buddy on his 690 and the other buddy on his Africa Twin Adventure, I am just fine with the suspension. I pound it and it works.
You are correct, the 1190S was - and is - a true unspoken hero...

If you're really going around the world & need the Swiss Army knife bike, this is in the argument for sure, great bike. If like me, your ADV is your second bike, meant to ride to the trail or take a few week long off-road trips, pushing heavy single track rough terrain, the 790R is a more capable off-road. Recently went single track w/ 1090, 790R & 390 ADV; 790R was clearly most capable when we switched on heavy single track due to suspension, weight, how low it carries its weight & power. 1090 & 1190 bring extra higher center weight w/ unneeded off-road power; 95 HP in Rally mode is all you'll ever need. Sure, Chris Birch can kill it on an 1190 but the common rider isn't Chris, & he's taken the 790R 12' in the air when pushing it. I personally would take the 1190 for a road trip & street over the 790. Think you may get some debate about the 1190 being the "fastest" KTM ADV. From the light, yes, running the canyon roads wide open or track, people are pretty big fans of the 1290 ADV's geometry, ability to plant & additional HP over the 1190 plus tech, don't see how the 1190 can be faster in real world street riding.

I really like your videos and reviews, but I think this is an unfair comparison. The 1290 S/R models weigh as much as the 1190, the heavier model you compare the 1190 to is the T -touring model with a much bigger tank. Also, the 1090 doesn't come with simply progressive springs, but with heavier fork springs and a brand new anti-bottoming PDS shock which is a huge upgrade to the ones on the 1190s. But to be fair, I agree with you. I own a 1090R but still think the 1190R was the best among the 1X90 lineup.

Prefer the 950/990 off road but the newer bike is more powerful on road. I think ktm went the wrong way with the 1190. The 950/990 is the perfect compromise adventure bike between street use and off-road capability. Can’t believe how good the design is after almost 20 years!

What are the weights your comparing? 1190s vs 1290s are almost the same weight. unless you're comparing to 1290T... but better comparison would be 1290s. This review also completely overlooks 1190r vs 1290r, which are both better offroad then the 1190s.

Funny I was just considering one couple of days ago, especially comparing how much bang you get for your buck.
However let me ask you and please be honest : isn't it too fast? Like way beyond whats legal and impossible to exploit without either losing our licence or worst?
If it could get downtuned to 100hp I'd feel safer.. proof that KTM is crazy is that motorcyclist like me try to figure out how to lower to power output of the engine lol.

Actually recently traded a 990 for a 1290 R and don't think I'll personally be looking back. The 1290 feels lighter( I know it isn't but it feels it) and is exponentially smoother on the pavement. Feels more planted and comfortable off-road especially in sand. I was never comfortable doing any real mileage on the 990 and while I haven't taken the 1290 out for its paces on the highway I can tell you its a lot more comfortable on the street without giving up the off-road ability (at least to my admittedly mild skill set). Oh and then there's the fuel range, Although I did like the raw feeling of the 990.

NAILED IT! I OWN 2. Plus the 1190S has spoked tubeless unlike the newer S models (17/19 wheels) with mag wheels. In July 2020 I bought a 2014 1190S where I live in FL, put on 1500 miles on her in one month, racing the Tail of the Dragon, TN and NC twisties. I love this bike so much, I just now bought another one 2015 for WA state when I come visit for 1+ months every summer. Both Orange, lower mileage for the cost of one new 1290. Just put 2000 miles on Sunburst this last 2 weeks already. The 1290 is choked from the factory due to Euro-4. A simple airbox swap makes it rip in a way that only a 1300cc bike can. Takes nothing from the 1190, but the larger motor is much, much stronger with minimal work. And no, the same mods on an 1190 won't make it as fast.

The Basitin Engineer off-road capability’s .. its it the best for its category? Cause honesty I just want a 500exc but with only one bike I’d be doing a rebuild every 6 months with how often I ride. And I don’t really want to be limited by a bike that’s designed to just be a short trips to the trail sort of bike. Not a fan the bigger adv either.. suitcase riding on gravel roads isn’t really my thing I’d rather take my 4x4 if I’m going to be weighed down on dirt roads. I want a bike I can do trail riding single and double track all while being about to commute to work sort of bike.
