Great interview, thanks to both of you! I’m fascinated by this time period.

I thoroughly enjoyed the discussion. I am curious if the elite parties in Jerusalem, such as the Sadducees, were allowed to use Roman pots and dishes like terra sigillata or were required to only use stoneware vessels. Dr. Magness discussion of the Roman siege at Masada and the timeline was an eye opener. Having visited the site years ago, I always thought the construction of the ramp would have taken many months. Thanks.

I have a slight criticism of Prof. Magness's view of ritual impurity. It seems to be her view that there was no connection between Jewish ritualistic impurity and sin. Ritual cleansing was clearly intended to serve as an illustration of the Jewish people's sinfulness and separation from God. The Levitical laws on purity are equally severe regardless of whether uncleanness is due to ritual impurity or sin, and Psalm 51 uses illustrations of washing to symbolize a believer's spiritual cleansing of sin. So yes, it's not a sin to have a menstrual cycle or to touch a lizard, but ritual impurity was definitely meant to serve as an illustration for our sinful condition. Many Jews perceived it in mechanical, legalistic terms (which is exactly what Jesus criticized), but they were acting against the original spirit of the ritual itself.

In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy,
And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.
“It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy.
And He shall be your fear,
And He shall be your dread.

Misconceptions and misunderstandings persist. The Earth is obviously not flat!
