PewdsXCutieMarzia I know I'm late but the game hints that in real life her father sexually abuses her. The lily represents her virginity and innocence, I think the seeds are a euphemism for semen, so when Boaris asks to trade your petal for a seed, it represents how her father sexually abuses her. I don't really understand most of the endings either, but I think the good ending is Mari standing up for herself.
Emily Clark you are correct, actually. The good ending is where Mary runs away from the shadow figure and touches paintings in order to escape it, in order to get into a secret room, where she can unlock the door to reality. When she is awake she unlocks the door in her room. That's good ending. However, the door in the debug room has three locks, and if you can't open the door, the freaky shadow comes and jumpscares you
It's her father who abused her. If you listen to the radio completely and study the version of Sleeping Beauty in her dream, it's made a bit more clear. Her uncle is represented by the penguin. She also lived in the mansion with a tutor and a maid, represented by the fox and the rabbit. The boar is her father, and yes, when he asks her to take his seed, the innuendo is perfectly intentional.
Firestar1992 I know I'm late of 3 years ! But your theory also explains why he doesn't play games and calls her sweetheart and sweetie also how he just tells her to do things and you don't have an option
So is it possible that Mary got molested by her father while she was sleeping? Because in the original story of sleeping beauty, she was raped in her sleep .-.
+jaa ne.ˣ There's that, then you also hear: a man panting;a slight "squeaking"/"creaking"noise hidden quite well by the piano; a little girl crying her eyes out - like the sort of crying that makes you ill. Also a voice says "get out of here!"
I think that the only reason that the fox and rabbit were so awful when you lost the game is that possibly they were murdered by her father, meaning that "the end'' was less remembering their personalities, and more the fear in her heart when he killed them in front of her. The only reason the penguin is still alive is because he is traveling and does not know what is happening to Mari, it also explains why in the worst ending where they recite the poem and there is blood everywhere you see the outlines of the fox and rabbit, but not the penguin.
Another representation of the uncle being unaware is he is shown as headless in the creepy nightmare image that flashes whereas the other two aren't, showing that they did find out/know
I dont know if someone already pointed that out, but the story the rabbit was saying was the Ancient Greek myth of Adonis. The two goddesses were Aphrodite and Persephony and he was killed by a boar during a hunting. I am not sure though if this adds to the story.
It might be that it is there to refer what may have happened to Mari's uncle. Also the two goddesses may be representing either the ladies that the bunny and fox are based off of, or Mari and her mother.
WARNING. SPOILER. The entire game is about how Mary in the waking world is being sexually abused by her father, who keeps her locked in her room. Most of this is revealed through allusion rather than direct confrontation, but there's a LOT of obvious subtext, dialogue, and scenes people may find upsetting.
I believe it was the dad that abused Mari due to: Mari being locked in her room due to her dad. Mari`s mom stating how she will try to save Mari and herself (an abusive relationship). The fact that the song name for when Mari is chased by the monster is entitled `BADDAD` in the file registry.
Actually it's entitled BADDAD because it's actually just a set of chords being played repeatedly which is B-A-D-D-A-D but yeah that's actually also one of the reasons. And Mari's mother could be dead actually, from what I gather she could fell too deep into her dreams never to wake up again which makes either she's in a coma or dead one of those two.
Some comments about the animals and what they may represent: Spoiler If you remain in each of the three puzzle rooms for about 15 seconds after the animals disappear, you will notice a creepy black & white static image in each of them. Each image will blink then disappear for the next 15 seconds, so it's kind of tricky to make it out. Spoiler In the bunny room, there's an image of a maid falling down, presumably about to crash into the ground killing herself, or already dead. In the penguin room, there is a decapitated male body in the armchair. In the fox room, there is a body of an elegant woman who looks as if she was covered in blood and had her eyes gouged out. I wonder if this may be a hint that the animals represent the people the psychotic father murdered in real life? It would correspond with the toys/items ripped to shreds in the dark version of the hallway. It might also explain why none of the people from Mari's life (the maid, the private tutor and the woman in the bar - I haven't found any hint as to who she was, Dora's suggestion seems likely) intervened in the sexual abuse. The ending song lyrics suggest that the father was not only sexually interested, but heavily obsessed with Mari so given the fact they live in a desolate mansion (as per radio message), it seems likely that he resorted to murder to keep the girl for himself. Also, Boaris's facial expression when he tries to persuade Mary to accept his "seed" is ominously similar to that of her father's in the brief jump scare that happens after you leave the dark hallway for the first time. Finally, the "good" ending leaves me wondering if Mari's mother is really deceased or only deep in coma, suffering the very fate Mari is trying to avoid. It may be a bit far-fetched, but... the angel has a voice of a mature female and guides Mari through her nightmare to the dream inhabitants' dismay, as if she knew very well how dreams work and as if she wasn't part of this one. Can the angel be Mari's mother in coma communicating with he daughter through the dream world? She does, after all, mention the key she herself needs to find to escape. Score: 0 (0 votes)
Fun fact: the animals are all coded in certain ways. The dream animals are all coded to be soft and sweet. They’re soft lines, small expressions, lots of rounded lines/shapes and pastel colors. They talk cordially as if addressing a friend/madam of the house. Boris is contrasted by sharp lines, slimy talk, and wider mouth. His entire character is sharp lines, his collar, his tusks, his fur. Even if you didn’t hear their blatant dialogue, you could reasonably surmise Boaris is the enemy.
Boris also is the only character of the “dream butlers” who uses earthy colors, even Foxanne uses highlighted reds instead of the normal darker reds/browns of foxes.
He's supposed to stand out, being a boar while the others are quite literally "softer" animals. Have you ever met someone who said their favorite animal is a boar?
"Do not listen to the animal in the second room. He confuses fiction with reality." That line kinda popped out to me, especially since Pen Gwendell is the one who's not really as "stay here!" As the others.
I don't think the uncle is the one abusing her, if the story is about molestation like you suspect. All the references to him are positive, and he gives you the bonus code to use the energy ball at the end. I think Pen Guindel might be a dream representation of the uncle. Guindel could be an alternate spelling of Gwendel, He's also the one who tells us to find the angel, and the only animal that doesn't seem happy about taking our petal. Plus we know Uncle Gwendel gave Mary books and a stuffed doll that looks like it could be a penguin. I'm betting the father is the abuser since it's implied that it was him who locked Marry in her room. He's probably represented by the boar.
So I have this theory that the penguin is Mary's uncle. Not a representation of him, but actually her real Uncle. If you get his seed without giving up your petal, he refers to you as "Mari", which is her real name in the waking world. As far as I remember, he is the only one to do so except for the angel fish, who is definitely the mother. Added to that, if you keep clicking on the radio in the first room, you will eventually be told that in this world, people have magical abilities passed down through family lines, and Mary got her powers from her mother. I don't think we ever find out whether her uncle was brother to Mari's mother or father, so it's not too much of a stretch to assume that he was biologically related to the mother, and therefore inherited the same dream-altering powers as she and Mari did.
I know this was six years ago but I have to reply with my opinion cause I have a little more to add. I think these characters are representations but as the way Mary interprets them so each character is different. I won't go into who Boaris is cause we all know who he is. Bunnilda was obviously Mari's maid in the waking world so was obviously a present in the house a lot. She probably knew about the abuse happening in the household but felt powerless to stop it at risk of being fired or being seen as a liar. Penn Guindel is of course her uncle who seems to be absent physically from Mari's life but wrote to her in letters so she probably spoke to him a lot in those. He's kind to her but oblivious to the abuse as he's not there to see it so he can't stop it in anyway. Foxanne is (as we presume) Mari's tutor who probably came to the house to teach her (not very well due to the games they play together). This may be because Mari's father may have not wanted her leaving the house to go to school and maybe tell a teacher. This must mean that Foxanne probably knows about the abuse too but doesn't do anything to stop it either for some of the same reasons as Bunnilda. Now there may be a reason why Bunnilda and Foxanne go mean and evil when you get the questions wrong but Penn Guindel remains calm and nice. Mari may see the bunny and fox in the waking world as people who can help her due to their knowledge of the abuse but are unwilling to so her perspective of them is warped so when they take the flower petals, they get mean. The penguin however is nice because her uncle is unaware of the abuse, shows incredible care to Mari and Mari knows that if he knew about the abuse, he would help her and put a stop to it. I think that's why they act in different ways.
@@BeanieBabyXx honestly I thought the fox was a bit more, suspicious? Than the others. Not as bad as the boar (for obvious reasons), but the fact that she was the first to say "go to him later" and "ignore the subconcious dream symbolism" as her first interaction gave me some retroactive, "uh oh. Maybe she knew but ignored it." thoughts. The symbolism/stereotype of a fox (usually characterized as sly, selfish, cruel, etc) vs a bunny (cutsey, fluffy, herbivoire as innocence) or a penguin (clumsy, bumbling, sweet) could also be a such hint, especially from a childish perspective. Though i could be reading too much into this.
Now I realize that the darker the endings, the darker the background of the credits get. The first ending, they were pink. The second ending, they were a darker red-ish pink. And of course the bad endings which play "Sleeping Mary" instead of "Nightmarish" are black and dark red.
42:08 is the WORST ending to me, like she was so close to getting out of the dream and into reality, and because she didn't have all of her flower petals, her own mind said she wasn't good enough to escape...
I really like the kind of games that are very cutesy and innocent in the beginning, but then suddenly turn very sinister and creepy. Are there more games like this..?
There's a game called Pocket Mirror, it's really well made and it kinda has a theme like that. It's one of my favorites, actually. But if you don't like dolls, darkness, and impossible puzzles, don't play.
There's a game called Doki Doki Literature Club!! Though i do not recommend if you are nit comfortable with the following; SPOILERS AHEAD!! If you are sensitive to subjects such as abuse, suicide, and depression-
TadpoleMage end roll is similar. (Manlybadasshero has actually done a lets play of it himself). Although it isn’t too cutesy, it definitely follows the formula of destroying the world over times, uncovering secrets and pulling out your heart strings as you see what has happened.
I think the solution of the plot is a lot simpler than people are making out. Everyone is saying she's afraid to go out, afraid to unlock the door and leave her home, but she honestly didn't have the physical key. The game tells us that the father locked her in that room, and that she won't be able to leave until he comes home, perhaps to keep her from running away or getting help. He's also into taxidermy, which is kinda weird and out of place. If the animals were meant to represent people she knew, then I'm quite certain he's Boaris, or perhaps that shadowy figure chasing her if we assume that it's not one in the same, though I doubt it since the shadow was standing where the boar's head is. If the father is abusing her, whether it be sexual or otherwise, then the theory that both are a symbol of her fear still works. The mom is assumedly either dead or in a coma judging by the memory text displayed upon reading one of her old book, and was probably the angel fish. The penguin was the uncle, which explains why he was the only one truly regretful for having to take a petal away, as he actually cared for her. I have no idea about the rabbit and fox, though.
There is a quote from lolita (which is about a girl abused by an older man) it goes "And she was mine, she was mine, the key was in my fist, my fist was in my pocket, she was mine." I think the key in the game is reference to that. Mari is trying to get the key, which represents control of her life, back from her abuser.
I love this game and Mary is so adorable. I did freak out when i saw the whole "HE'S COMING, HE'S COMING" But it was a really good game in all even if you have to play through it so many times.
You would not BELIEVE how stoked I was to see that you played this! My friend Trass worked on the music and is part of the sequel as well, and I myself, along with another friend, have tried out for speaking parts in the upcoming sequel. I really hope you give Blue Dreams a look when it comes out!
This game is the embodiment of 'There is more than what meets the eye' it seems. From what I got from the game, I'm thinking that Mari is controlled by her Father. The rabbit and the fox were used as ways to install fear in her maybe. With their dead corpses I can only assume that's a metaphor of him exacting some sort of violence to ensure fear is placed in her? Like a warning of 'if you leave or defy me this is what will happen?'' Or they could represent people she knew that were her friends or were close to her that got hurt when she told them about what was going on with her? It could explain why all three animals turn into those weird ghost shadows. I think the boar represents her father's presence. He doesn't present riddles like the other three and he is a 'predator' compared to the other three animals. He even refuses to give Mari his seed unless she gives him her petal unlike the other three that presented a challenge to her. The penguin really seems to be the only ally she has and represents her uncle I think....He's the only one who gives her advice to find the angel and also the only one who doesn't turn twisted. I can also assume he's her uncle as he was also helping her mom-The woman who wrote the letter to Glenn. That and also in the real world the penguin is the only animal that is in her possession which was given by her uncle. Just throwing out what I thought, but overall this game is rather cutesy and disturbing which will completely ensure I won't sleep a wink tonight! Keep up the breakthroughs Manly!
I also thought the Penguin might've been the Uncle since they both like books. Someone pointed out the shadow's theme song is BADDAD so that pretty much confirms it's the father. There's interesting stuff in the bonus area that mentions how the original game was based around the mother saving Mari so I think some of the dialogue from her is reference to that. It seems lucid dream walking powers are a family trait.
Having that as a family trait would be scary in my opinion. Ha ha. It just hit me how also at first I thought this story would be close to Alice in Wonderland, but now it makes more sense with Sleeping Beauty. Especially with the open story book having that story read. Mainly because of what Beauty's father did to her while she slept. Sleeping is the 'best' escape from reality, but even that is dangerous and you can't depict reality from your dreams. A lot of this reminds me of Yume Nikki, symbolism wise. It makes it really interesting.
+13deathKISS This may be a little dark, but I have a feeling that Mari's father rapes her... While listening to Elegy of the Dream, the lyrics give off that vibe and also in the track BAD DAD you hear him say "good girl" and "sweet girl." Do you have any thoughts on this?
To people who doesn't know: the author said there is going to be a *sequel* for this game, but *it follows the True Ending* (the one you get if you follow Boaris, but you keep 2 petals). (Xe also said we aren't going to take control of Mary/Mari, but of another character.) It's a pity it doesn't follow the Good one (the one where Mari goes out of her room), IMO. ^w^;
And dang, I'm really excited for it's release. It's sometime this November, I think? That was the one I read from their tumblr page. And I think this will have 5 games in the 'Myrrh Series' isn't it? Geez, so excited! I wish Ms. accha luck with the series!
Although the game was short, it had pretty good pacing. I actually found myself nervous every time Foxanne's tasks were completed, because it meant facing Boaris again. I enjoyed it and it was clear a lot of thought and effort was put into this game, the art and the music were all really great. Thanks for doing a playthrough of this!
It sounds like the person hurting her was her father, considering he locked her in and it led deeper into the nightmare when she waited for him. There's also the fact that her uncle gave her the only "friend" (the penguin) who remained a friend and tried to help her out of the dream with hints. He also gave her the only way of protecting herself. There's also the hints that her mother was once in the same dream/nightmare but didn't manage to escape and was lost, leaving Mari to fend for herself.
That poem was really something. It pretty much hints Mary's real life. But I'm pretty much excited for this game series! It's to tie up loose ends and how everything came to be!
For those who are wondering - though it might already have been pointed out - you have to go into the Sea Angel's room BEFORE you go to the Garden if you want the best ending. Otherwise when you come back the door will have been cemented over.
It's not the Uncle who moslested her. The Uncle was the one who gave Mary the books and the penguin doll, the same penguin who helps Mary during the dream; the other three characters, Maid, Mother and Tutour are female which means she was molested by her FATHER. The same father who locks her in her room for god knows how long. The same father, who like the king, "gathered his fruits of love" from sleeping beauty.
>*EVIL SHADOW BEAST IS CHASING MANLY* Manly: no m8 Man, I needed that laugh. This game is absolutely h a u n t i n g The SUPERMARY ending was my favorite; also to me this is the canon ending. I will accept no alternatives
•The music changes whenever you go to meet the boar, once you enter his room you can hear the piano keys deepen. •Both the fox and the boar's text box's have sharp edges, where as the panguin and bunnies do not, this could be just for aesthetic sakes, but the boar's text box is completely geometric, lacking any sort of soft shapes. •As Mari visits the boar's room for the first time, just before she steps in there's a whisper in a feminine voice, but the context it covered up by manly-
Bunnilda tells a story about a man who was loved by two women. Maybe the goddess of love symbolises her mother and the goddess of the underworld her father's lover. Penn Guindel symbolises her supportive uncle. He want's her to get out and escape from home and tries his best to lift her morale. Ana could be Mary's mother/his sister. I guess he couldn't save her. Foxanne may represent the said lover. She entertains Mary halfheartedly, get's agitated quickly and got a drinking problem. Boaris represents her abusive father. I have no idea what the ghosts could represent. They all died? At least that's what I think.^^
Fun(?) Fact, the song that plays when The Chaser is coming after you is titled "BADDAD" in the fandom because of the cords playing in the background that continuously loop (Being B. A. D. D. A. D.). Also, though I am unsure how true this is, there may be lyrics to the song as well, going like this: "He's Coming He's Always Chasing you" "Good girl, Sweet Girl. My sweet girl, you are mine" (Crying in the background) "GET OUT OF HERE" "He's Coming" "'You are MINE' he says. 'You are MINE' he says" "He's always chasing you" "He's gonna come" "He's Coming" "GET OUT OF HERE"
You gotta play the blue dream, its the sequel of this gameee! its shown in the game where after returning to the real world, you'll check the bookcase you'll find a letter that's hinted to be from the next game's protagonist. the note that said "mari, sorry that i couldn't come for you...."
I usually don't react to things in horror games, I just enjoy watching them, especially with someone like MBH's commentary, but the part about "Deserving his seed" made me physically recoil in disgust. Good game lol
_As I started to watch last night, I felt I probably shouldn't see this before sleeping_ Children’s stories can be dangerous things, as are so many things in a child’s world. The dark undertone of the game made me remember the old Italian version of "Sleeping Beauty" which saw her raped by the king as she slept. I felt all the characters, cocktail lounge, & forest with dangling spiders (hate them!) were creepy, especially Boaris. What a pity that we have to associate sweet words for little girls like darling & dear with a pedophile. “We will have our own special time later” & “do more _pleasurable_ things together". That is true horror with a true monster. Mari & her mother were abused by her father.... as her mother couldn't help, Mari had to find a way to "escape" through her dreams. The fragile petals of a lily were a pretty metaphor for purity... so one by one, her innocence was lost. If within her dreams she could escape to safety, then she could resign herself to her waking fate - a harsh sad reality of abuse. If she could solve life's puzzles & escape her dream pursuer... well, it is still just a dream. Could she escape or did she just dream it all? It was an interesting game... No matter how gently touched or handled though, the subject matter of abuse is a sad & difficult one. Very nicely played.
Hard to tell if she did or didn't escape. If the whole thing was a dream, then it's like Yonaka sleeping or comatose while the Mogeko King molests her. Mary or Mari is molested but escapes reality by dreaming. It was a sad game. Happy games don't have as emotional a story though. =)
simcoll1 Guy Doin'Nothing Really Hi!! Yes, Simcoll, agree you are absolutely correct. That is sad part really... she is trapped in nightmares then & she will always be molested by father... You know - I wouldn't want to be in permanent dream, even if pleasant... guess I believe in making reality as close to sweet dream as possible... ~~ _Moge_ ~~ ^w^
When Bunnilda, Penguindel or Foxanne says “seed” they refer to an actual seed, like a plant seed, but when Boaris says it I think he’s referring to his semen. The same word takes on a completely new meaning depending on the context and which character says it. The way the developer pulled that off is smooth as hell.
Well, you may want to either lower the volume and turn on all the lights in your room (to feel safe) when the video gets around the part Mari enters into the dream version of her "real" bedroom. It's noticeable as less pink and fluffy. It's a very gradual transition into the scary parts, but I'd say it's around that time in the video shit starts getting creepy with the music and atmosphere. And it gets worse as ManlyBadassHero replays the game (the repeated parts are cut out) and newer and darker scenes are shown. There's a part where a creepy face appears on the screen and later a tall figure begins chasing after Mari while you can hear the words, "He's coming, he's coming" being whispered loudly. Omg. :| I had to cover the screen during those parts because I was super freaked out. I would list the video times for the scares, but I'm too afraid to research the frightening parts...
Me when I saw this: Aww this isn't too bad I mean sure it's going to get messed up soon but it can't be that bad! (sees the first ghost thing.) Ok yeah no I'll just be looking at the comments now
I don't think anyones mentioned this before: In the good ending, the ending line is "good morning Mary". Many people see this as the good ending being nothing but another dream, she didn't actually escape. But, it's mentioned before that Mary can make her dreams a reality. She made the gold leaf key real, allowing her to escape. So, it's possible that she made her dream self/life real. The line calls her *Mary*, not mari. So I think she made her entire dream into a reality. I don't know why I'm realizing this years later but it's interesting
For me this game is so much more then it let's us on about. So I always come back to this video once in a while. The atmosphere, the music, all just makes me so inspired to create a game based only on that. In fact I had an idea, still have those files I started making for it, but I think it might just become an old project when I can have spare time on making it fully. In the meantime, at least I'm gaining experience. All in all, thank you Manlybadasshero for sharing this game and gameplay with us! I'm glad I found you on youtube.
I just realised something. A lot of people have a theory that Mari’s mother is in a coma, and that this magical dream stuff is a power that was passed on through the family. We can presume that the voice speaking at 36:32 is Mari’s mother: “But, Mari… be careful. If you fall too far into your dreams, you won’t ever wake up.” We know that finding the key would have saved both Mari and her mother, and that’s exactly what her mother tried to do. But when you enter the more nightmarish version of the dream, the father starts to chase you. Perhaps when you get caught and you ‘die’, you end up “falling too far into your dreams.” I believe that the Mother tried to do exactly what Mari does in the game, but she fails, gets caught by the father, and ends up in a coma.
Holy smokes, can't believe this video is 6 years old. I absolutely love the commentary, I laughed so much at your voice acting and little joke comments, and rarely do I ever laugh at gameplay videos in general!
Oh god, I remember watching this video years ago and ending up having nightmares about it. I was fairly younger then, and I completely forgot if it was simply a dream or if it was a real video I watched. I'm both relieved and unnerved that I managed to find it again.
**commenting before watching the video** I already played the game (and I loved it even if I got overly scared) but I'm watching it again just because of Manly's gameplay. You can't skip his gameplays. XD
Damn I really expected you to zoom in on her eyes when you said that part about Mary staring into your soul joke. Really nice usage of sprites. Game looks beautiful. Puzzles were good too. Lot's to explore. HADOUKEN!
When she opened the door with the Golden Leaf key in the real world and said, "I can leave..." I thought "Bold of you to assume this game will let you leave that easy" and expected there was gonna be a "BEESH YOU THOUGHT" twist.
It's amazing how far Manly is voice change. Not knowing this was from 10 years ago, I thought someone was impersonating Manly 😂 Since I just directly click on the next video with a Manly title and Manly thumbnail.
Okay, I think the reason the Rabbit and Fox become demonic is because they were representations of those who left Mary in one manner or another. They chose themselves over her. The Rabbit being her mother who committed suicide by jumping from somewhere high, judging by the figure that can be seen falling after you get her seed. Then with the fox she was a drunk and chose the drink over her own niece, judging by the figure seen laying down on the floor of the bar after you retrieve her seed (she may also have died of alcohol poisoning). With the penguin he was forced away, either via work or the Father Mary fears so much. He wanted to help her but could do very little but try to give her strength.
I don't think her mother represents Bunnilda. She also didn't commit suicide due to the fact that if you keep listening to the radio in the dream world, then the girl on the radio will start answering questions about Mari/Mary's mom. She said her mother had special powers like Mari, but before she could teach Mari how to control it, she died by falling into a coma.
Achariya needs a blanket Well that's undoubtedly what happens to Mary if she looses all her petals or takes the bores advice and follows him into the tree. She becomes trapped in her dream land in a coma or just flat out dies. Maybe the falling figure is more literal of her mother, 'falling into a coma' = falling figure.
I prefer this theory over the theory that the father killed them all as this game feels quite realistic in terms of CSA. CSA happens when a lot of people fail a child, when a child doesn’t have the support they need. They are often in low income situation but the Fox being a drunk and the mother being sick work in that they feel like realistic reasons Mari was in this situation and abused
This was a seriously beautiful game! There's a lot to think about after watching this. It's interesting to hear what people have to say. If I could give my two cents... Someone mentioned in the comments if the love story the bunny talked about had any meaning. The gods she mentioned were Persephone, Aphrodite, and Adonis--and in the Greek story, Adonis was killed by a boar. Perhaps Mari's mother, her uncle, and her father, were involved in a love triangle? And it resulted in either the mom's or the uncle's death? Or maybe even both.
Everyone goes on and on about who the characters are, but can't stop and think about the uncle coming from the STREET FIGHTER UNIVERSE and giving her the idea of Hadoken! WTF
Nah, you definitely made a good point with recognizing the Boar as the one out of the loop. If he was meant to be deliberately cutesy and dreamlike like the other characters, they would have problem made him a pig instead (the cute, domestic alternative) and given him an unrealistic name associated with his animal, rather than a real world name associated with his animal.
6:00 These books all reference some kind of danger, but also advice to the protagonist. It kind of fits Penn Guindel's role as Mary's role model. Alice in Wonderland can spark a whole ass discussion about adolescence. Including the behaviors of the adults that may try to harm you. Where the Wild Things Are teaches you about the dangers of escapism within a dream. The protag isn't as distressed as Mary, per se, but he definitely shares some qualities. Velveteen rabbit teaches you... well, to pretty much love yourself. and that others WILL rip on you for being different. but you need to accept that part as reality. it's like making a good bond of sorts.
no lie i could listen to u tell me a story all day your voice is perfect for story telling and commentary I literally though your voice was apart of the game woah
"I know that you deserve my seed."
"Ugh"
There couldn't have been a better response to that.
Carnivorous Turtle i dont understand.
Carnivorous Turtle how did u find out? i didnt understand the game/ending so much, sorry.
PewdsXCutieMarzia It says it I think.
Firestar1992 it also would mke sense as to wy she destroyed the shadow standing in front of the boar head. i assume she saw her dad as a pig.
Firestar1992 and he was saying we will have our *special* *time* later...
Firestar1992 I know I'm late of 3 years ! But your theory also explains why he doesn't play games and calls her sweetheart and sweetie also how he just tells her to do things and you don't have an option
The uncle is the real father, the father is a step father
So is it possible that Mary got molested by her father while she was sleeping? Because in the original story of sleeping beauty, she was raped in her sleep .-.
Boy... Nintendo sure did go a completely different direction with this new Animal Crossing game.
VideoGameHaven2000 I love the new combat system

Needs a bit more polish but good first try
this comment aged well
bro I thought u were talking about new horizons when I realised this is 3 years old
know what's creepy? whenever the guy chases you, you can hear voices saying "he's coming, he's coming.."
LOL
It could be a double entendre
+jaa ne.ˣ There's that, then you also hear: a man panting;a slight "squeaking"/"creaking"noise hidden quite well by the piano; a little girl crying her eyes out - like the sort of crying that makes you ill. Also a voice says "get out of here!"
that absolutely terrifying,,
If you need the soundtrack, it's called 'BADDAD'
I think that the only reason that the fox and rabbit were so awful when you lost the game is that possibly they were murdered by her father, meaning that "the end'' was less remembering their personalities, and more the fear in her heart when he killed them in front of her. The only reason the penguin is still alive is because he is traveling and does not know what is happening to Mari, it also explains why in the worst ending where they recite the poem and there is blood everywhere you see the outlines of the fox and rabbit, but not the penguin.
The penguin *IS* there as shown in 34:24
Another representation of the uncle being unaware is he is shown as headless in the creepy nightmare image that flashes whereas the other two aren't, showing that they did find out/know
@@orangetree.. Or… the uncle is dead, presumably related to the main plot.
I dont know if someone already pointed that out, but the story the rabbit was saying was the Ancient Greek myth of Adonis. The two goddesses were Aphrodite and Persephony and he was killed by a boar during a hunting. I am not sure though if this adds to the story.
anastasia93gr omg you’re right
It might be that it is there to refer what may have happened to Mari's uncle. Also the two goddesses may be representing either the ladies that the bunny and fox are based off of, or Mari and her mother.
Yes! I loved that story
WARNING. SPOILER.
The entire game is about how Mary in the waking world is being sexually abused by her father, who keeps her locked in her room. Most of this is revealed through allusion rather than direct confrontation, but there's a LOT of obvious subtext, dialogue, and scenes people may find upsetting.
is that true? but that looks like an interesting theory but creepy, sad at the same time.
PewdsXCutieMarzia It's not a theory, though.. It's pretty much canon, the way Boaris talks to her, it's....kinda obvious.
PewdsXCutieMarzia When Boaris says about her deserving the seed, it's a perfect innuendo and is intended, which adds up to the way he talks to her
I believe it was the dad that abused Mari due to:
Mari being locked in her room due to her dad.
And Mari's mother could be dead actually, from what I gather she could fell too deep into her dreams never to wake up again which makes either she's in a coma or dead one of those two.
simcoll1 Now THAT'S clever, the whole "BADDAD" thing. I love it when the composers throw out little easter eggs like that.
BroadwayBrittany That was one heck of an esocteric Easter Egg.
Sexually abused*
Earth- Chan wow Lina. You just had to do that.
Some comments about the animals and what they may represent:
Spoiler
If you remain in each of the three puzzle rooms for about 15 seconds after the animals disappear, you will notice a creepy black & white static image in each of them. Each image will blink then disappear for the next 15 seconds, so it's kind of tricky to make it out.
Spoiler
In the bunny room, there's an image of a maid falling down, presumably about to crash into the ground killing herself, or already dead.
Yes! Both Mari & her mom seem to have the power of dreams.

Wowzer.
I think the fox is the private tutor and the penguin is her uncle.

Other note: updating as I watch. When you fail the “dream butlers” get the same sharp features as Boaris.
He's supposed to stand out, being a boar while the others are quite literally "softer" animals. Have you ever met someone who said their favorite animal is a boar?
music as well as telling em no also spawns the monster in the nightmare
"Do not listen to the animal in the second room. He confuses fiction with reality." That line kinda popped out to me, especially since Pen Gwendell is the one who's not really as "stay here!" As the others.
All of the "rules" are exactly what you have to do to get the best ending, which is really clever. (Touching the paintings, straying from the halls)
in the letter her uncle writes her, he also tells her to use superpowers to help cope with her father
It’s the dad, the dad is represented by the boar.
Late response I know but. Yknow
@@BeanieBabyXx that's really interesting, I didn't think of it. Thanks!
Since he was Mari's mom's brother I presume, maybe he has the power to enter his dreams like Mari and Ana? Maybe that's why he's so sentient
@@guggelguggel7491 Her failure silhouette doesn’t seem to involve her being ‘dispatched’ either.
Omfg, when the voices started whispering,"He's coming!" I swear, I had never been so scared in my life! D:
Totaly the same, but it's 10 times worst when you play it :(
I Changed my pants a lot LOL
Same, I'm terrified
Now I realize that the darker the endings, the darker the background of the credits get. The first ending, they were pink. The second ending, they were a darker red-ish pink. And of course the bad endings which play "Sleeping Mary" instead of "Nightmarish" are black and dark red.
42:08 is the WORST ending to me, like she was so close to getting out of the dream and into reality, and because she didn't have all of her flower petals, her own mind said she wasn't good enough to escape...
Same here
Omg the shadow scared me 😭
It's not because she's not having all flowers petals, it's because she wasn't having all the keys btw
I really like the kind of games that are very cutesy and innocent in the beginning, but then suddenly turn very sinister and creepy. Are there more games like this..?
There is a game called Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea, though I do not recommend people who do not feel comfortable with rape or gore to play.
Omg I LOVE that game that's how I found this game!
There's a game called Pocket Mirror, it's really well made and it kinda has a theme like that. It's one of my favorites, actually. But if you don't like dolls, darkness, and impossible puzzles, don't play.
There's a game called Doki Doki Literature Club!! Though i do not recommend if you are nit comfortable with the following;
SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Does anyone else hear "Wait don't go in there." when Manly going to the Boar room 0-0 I wonder who said that.
I heard it too, because I went back.
Yeah, it freaked me out.....
But, that's what makes it a horror game.
the woman whispers are from Mary's mother, trying to guide her towards the "angel."
Ah okay... Do you mean angel?
There is a quote from lolita (which is about a girl abused by an older man) it goes
"And she was mine, she was mine, the key was in my fist, my fist was in my pocket, she was mine."
I think the key in the game is reference to that. Mari is trying to get the key, which represents control of her life, back from her abuser.
i literally choked on my drink when you said boaris talked to mary like a pedophile holy shit

coming soon since a long time ago :(
"Mary was a little lamb no longer white as snow" If that isn't the best way of saying "Oh she's sooo dead" then I don't know what is.
I know I very late but I guess it's a way of saying she lost her purity.
That was....amazing o.o, your capability to capture the image the story tells you is amazing
Yea, and do you notice that the illustration on the title screen depicts the penguin as the only one who's distressed? That's kinda interesting..
+13deathKISS This may be a little dark, but I have a feeling that Mari's father rapes her... While listening to Elegy of the Dream, the lyrics give off that vibe and also in the track BAD DAD you hear him say "good girl" and "sweet girl." Do you have any thoughts on this?
To people who doesn't know: the author said there is going to be a *sequel* for this game, but *it follows the True Ending* (the one you get if you follow Boaris, but you keep 2 petals). (Xe also said we aren't going to take control of Mary/Mari, but of another character.)
It's a pity it doesn't follow the Good one (the one where Mari goes out of her room), IMO. ^w^;
I do remember but I forgot the name

So basically, in the happy end credits, it is implied that Mari did not actually escape. Rather, she dreamed that she did... Well fuck.
Boaris' face when he's angry is the thing that haunts my nightmares...
He looks like bakugo 😂😂😭
"Good Girl,
Sweet girl,
You're Mine"
O_O
That poem was really something. It pretty much hints Mary's real life. But I'm pretty much excited for this game series! It's to tie up loose ends and how everything came to be!
Actually in the true ending when you enter the tree with only two or one petal I think you would hear the the "Boar's" voice saying that.
pandachu0123 Eeee...Boaris is just really creepy...
This somehow reminds me of a fanfic ... lol totally out of topic XD but that's still creepy as heck O.O
For those who are wondering - though it might already have been pointed out - you have to go into the Sea Angel's room BEFORE you go to the Garden if you want the best ending. Otherwise when you come back the door will have been cemented over.
can we appreciate the fact that mary just casually dreams of a bar when she appears to be so young
26:09
It's not the Uncle who moslested her. The Uncle was the one who gave Mary the books and the penguin doll, the same penguin who helps Mary during the dream; the other three characters, Maid, Mother and Tutour are female which means she was molested by her FATHER. The same father who locks her in her room for god knows how long. The same father, who like the king, "gathered his fruits of love" from sleeping beauty.

I wasn't kidding. But I really did enjoy the video anyway.
I have to take pills for my sleeping problems, so like it or no, I am going to sleep tonight. >_
*like it or not,
Bunnilda tells a story about a man who was loved by two women.
Oh god, Mary leveled up not from level 1, but from 12.
Assuming the initial level could represent age, this means this kid's 12 years old.
Fun(?) Fact, the song that plays when The Chaser is coming after you is titled "BADDAD" in the fandom because of the cords playing in the background that continuously loop (Being B. A. D. D. A. D.).
Also, though I am unsure how true this is, there may be lyrics to the song as well, going like this:
"He's Coming
He's Always Chasing you"
"Good girl, Sweet Girl.
My sweet girl, you are mine" (Crying in the background)
"GET OUT OF HERE"
"He's Coming"
"'You are MINE' he says. 'You are MINE' he says"
"He's always chasing you"
"He's gonna come"
"He's Coming"
"GET OUT OF HERE"
As soon as I worked out what was going on, I couldn't stop flinching and grimacing. Poor girl. :(

not really the CUTEST but it's cute!
Chica 's soul phone So, what is ranked as cutest, anyway?
Truthfully the thing that scared me the most was the snapped faces of Bunnilda and Foxanna after the bad ending. e.o|||
I usually don't react to things in horror games, I just enjoy watching them, especially with someone like MBH's commentary, but the part about "Deserving his seed" made me physically recoil in disgust. Good game lol
When Boaris was talking to Mary to do some pleasurable stuff with her I just died on the inside ._. Just why. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT ;-;
_As I started to watch last night, I felt I probably shouldn't see this before sleeping_
Children’s stories can be dangerous things, as are so many things in a child’s world.
Guy Doin'Nothing Really If you follow the true ending, no she didn't escaped. She went deeper into the dreams.
simcoll1 Guy Doin'Nothing Really Hi!!
I remember watching this video becaise i couldnt figure out what was happening 7 years ago. Crazy how much this channel has grown since then
I wish someone could list the jumpscares, at what times, so I can watch this at night without waking up the entire city block when shit jumps at you
There is no real jumpscares so don't worry Worst that happens is when he enters the dark version of the dream and they get chased
Sorry, typo in my last message. I meant rewatch, not research.
Thank you guys, that was unexpectedly considerate of y'all

me who has played "cute" games before: *"seems normal to me-"*
It always gets me when I see previously nice characters snap. That’s always the scariest thing for me in games.
I cannot believe this insolence manly. I come to this channel to be entertained and all I receive is this blatant boarism
Mindilsast 3 years later and I JUST get the joke. Smfh, I'm dumb
Out of all the horror games I've seen, this one...
It is one of the ones that legitimately disturbed me...
"I know that you deserve my seed."
Uuugh this sentence Boaris said sounds sooo wrong. :|
seed men
Title: "manly let's play"
Video: "I wish my room were that cute"
**Unexpected hadoken of cuteness**
Me when I saw this: Aww this isn't too bad I mean sure it's going to get messed up soon but it can't be that bad! (sees the first ghost thing.) Ok yeah no I'll just be looking at the comments now
At 26:32Am I the only one that hears the 'Good girl, sweet girl, you're mine'?
CoverGirl No, it's supposed to be there, I hope!
you are not alone
Nope, you're not the only one, that was creepy as hell btw
I hear it
When I put it near my ear,I could hear it properly
I don't think anyones mentioned this before:
In the good ending, the ending line is "good morning Mary".
I don't know why I'm realizing this years later but it's interesting
that guy that guy that attacked you really scared the living crap out of me
For me this game is so much more then it let's us on about.
Omg manly are you becoming the Manlybadasshero of Moe?
I love how he didn't remember that the voice at the start said that "there's only three doors, do not look for a fourth door" yet that's what he did-
She so smug when she fires off her hadouken :D
Holy smokes, can't believe this video is 6 years old. I absolutely love the commentary, I laughed so much at your voice acting and little joke comments, and rarely do I ever laugh at gameplay videos in general!
Boar: Mary's father
Penguin: Mary's uncle
Bunny: maid
Fox: Mary's stepmother
Angel Fish: Mary's mother
so the Mari in the dream is called MARY and the real one is called MARI? hmmn... why did Mari dream't herself as another girl?
Because Mari got abused by her father while Mary is none of that. Mary is sweet and kind and beautiful while Mari is plain and damaged and hurt.
MiaJoy Daorerk woah... that's so dark... yeah..... thanks for explaining i guess
I can kinda relate to Mari, she doesnt want to be in the body her father touched sexually, so she dreams herself as another girl.
Maybe a virgin Mary reference?
Oh god, I remember watching this video years ago and ending up having nightmares about it. I was fairly younger then, and I completely forgot if it was simply a dream or if it was a real video I watched. I'm both relieved and unnerved that I managed to find it again.
DAMN IT! THIS GAME IS DARKER THAN 90% OF HORROR GAMES AND IT'S PINK AND FLUFFY.
WHAT IS THIS SORCERY?!
Have you ever played Wadanohara? It's very similar. Starts out as cute, ends up being very creepy.
some horror games appear as a cutesy normal game, but its secretly dark. It's a thrill.
**commenting before watching the video**
I already played the game (and I loved it even if I got overly scared) but I'm watching it again just because of Manly's gameplay.
You can't skip his gameplays. XD
Damn I really expected you to zoom in on her eyes when you said that part about Mary staring into your soul joke. Really nice usage of sprites. Game looks beautiful. Puzzles were good too. Lot's to explore. HADOUKEN!
At first I thought, "This is too cute to be a horror game!' then the creepy creep of a shadow man came into the picture...
When she opened the door with the Golden Leaf key in the real world and said, "I can leave..." I thought "Bold of you to assume this game will let you leave that easy" and expected there was gonna be a "BEESH YOU THOUGHT" twist.
LoL I played this game yesterday. :3
I loved playing Dreaming Mary. but that boar.....he rubbed me the wrong way...>.
Pretty sure the boar was TRYING to rub you the wrong way... If you know what I mean...
That is the point.
It's amazing how far Manly is voice change. Not knowing this was from 10 years ago, I thought someone was impersonating Manly 😂 Since I just directly click on the next video with a Manly title and Manly thumbnail.
I noticed how much softer his voice was back then
Same man!
All these cute games and everything is not what it seems... it's always the cutest games that psychologically mess you up in the end...
You're very insightful. It makes the walk-through more interesting, and I agree with your analysis. Ugh it's just so creepy.
woah i didnt even realize this vid was made 6 years ago, this man never changed (In a good way)
This was a seriously beautiful game!
When the others gave their seeds, it seemed normal, but when Boaris did the same, damn it was creepy.
Hi person I showed this video to

Hi person I showed this video to but on an alt acc 1 year late
Everyone goes on and on about who the characters are, but can't stop and think about the uncle coming from the STREET FIGHTER UNIVERSE and giving her the idea of Hadoken! WTF
Nah, you definitely made a good point with recognizing the Boar as the one out of the loop. If he was meant to be deliberately cutesy and dreamlike like the other characters, they would have problem made him a pig instead (the cute, domestic alternative) and given him an unrealistic name associated with his animal, rather than a real world name associated with his animal.
When i play that, i hear someone whispering :"Mary,wait... Don't go there..." before i open Boaris Door...
6:00
These books all reference some kind of danger, but also advice to the protagonist.
Velveteen rabbit teaches you... well, to pretty much love yourself. and that others WILL rip on you for being different. but you need to accept that part as reality. it's like making a good bond of sorts.
this is so awesome, thank you!!! i never made that connection
If you didn't catch it right before you chose to go through the door to see Boris there was a faint voice saying "Mari" "Don't go there yet"
9:21 oh gosh what a precious laugh you have.
"I know that you deserve my seed"
"Ugh..."
It was at this moment I knew subscribing to this guy had been the right idea all along
no lie i could listen to u tell me a story all day your voice is perfect for story telling and commentary I literally though your voice was apart of the game woah
32:42 If you pause it just right... Bam, skull head, melting painting of Mary.
NO. Don't touch me there. That's my no no square!
