I agree with you on 71 and 72, especially the 71. I always thought in 73 they looked bloated, and I never cared for the resurrection of the 65 style tail lights.

@@kennethsouthard6042 The major change in '73 were park bench bumpers. Not very much other than that. The pre-battering ram ones are definitely better looking.

@@HiroNguyThe car changed drastically in 73. In addition to the front and rear facia the The body sides changed to where I don't believe any sheet metal from 71 or 72 would fit on a 73. The interior changed radically as well including the dashboard. Overall, the car just got bulkier from here and gradually became more of a mini Lincoln, similar to the Marquis
The car essentially stayed in this form up until 79 when it was replaced with the Panther platform.

@@kennethsouthard6042 I'll look that up. Thanks for the lead! To my memory my friend's '72 Galaxie looked almost the same as my '73 but for the bumpers but that was a long time ago so memory might not recall those details.

73 is such an interesting year: the oil embargo didn't happen until the 74s were out. You get the smog controls and huge bumpers, but for the most part, you're getting this interesting blend of pre-malaise and early malaise features that are just super unique. It's the size and comfort and quality of the late 60s, still with a big block, but while also having the first compromises for emissions and safety. It's a transitionary period and I think that, as far as owning these cars today, they're a great way to enjoy a period of time where changes were coming quick and fast.

My first car was the 1973 LTD with the 400. Canary or Custard Yellow with dark green interior. Grandpa got it to pull his boat, which had a two axel trailer. Anyway, time went by and I got it. It was a good thing that my dad owned a gas station. The only mishap that I had was that the brake switch that turned off the cruise control broke. Living in rural Iowa, I set the cruise to 95 when on a country straight country road. Came up over a hill and found the Beverly Hillbilly's truck rattling along and waited to the last second to hit the brakes. Suddenly, as it slowed down, all I saw was yellow hood. Guessed where that truck was at and passed on the shoulder with a black cloud of smoke behind me. Once I got back on the road, and could not get the cruise to shut off, I threw it in neutral until I got the engine back under control. MEMORIES!!! What killed it was the automatic choke going out and filling up the crankcase with gas while my idiot brother was borrowing it. By the time he figured out what was going on, it was coming out of the top of the dipstick tube.

Engines were rated in SAE Net Horsepower (all std engine accessories and std air cleaner and exhaust system in place). The compression ratio was reduced in '73 to run unleaded gas. Under the old SAE Gross Horsepower ratings it might've been rated around 300HP. Performance has to be compared to similar full size cars of the day which will weigh about as much or more. I love the story behind this car that reminds me of a time when I went to get a Mercury Grand Marquis and a guy had one parked out by a barn and it had the 302 in it and even a full tank of gas
The guy said that it just stopped running and we asked if we could go out and look at it so my dad was with me and we were poking around it and I seen it wasn't getting any spark so since it took the same type of coil as the car we were driving a Ford Fairmont I swapped coils for a moment. Back in and the car fired right up
Dad said get that coil back off there and hear go up and pay the man he only wanted $100 for the car and tell him we'll come back tomorrow to to get it that was back in
But this car here in the video is fantastic I love it's looks these are the type of cars I grew up with in love and I also had one later in my ears to one of Ford's best cars
I also like the seat belt system for 1973 that as soon as you took it out of park anybody sitting in the front seat if they didn't have their seatbelts fastened the seat belt light and buzzer would stay on 74 models too early 75 had the seatbelt starter Interlock system

The car was actually really comfortable, and quick for a family car. (My Dad was also a FORD man, so I knew of this particular model well). Great classic blue oval._

There is a 1974 Ford LTD coupe with a 351 2 barrel motor for sale at a dealer I drove by in Northern Illinois. It has 18,000 original miles on it with the original title. It has allegedly been in a heated garage since 1980. They are asking $9990 for it. New fuel tank, fuel pump and tires. Maybe I can low ball it like Adam did this one.

I've been watching a ton of Cannon & Barnaby Jones. From the Lincoln Mark IV to a bevy of LTD Broughams, QM Productions rolled with FOMOCO to the point of absurdity.
    It's awesome!

Your channel is great. When I was 10, I watched Men in Black and Tommy Lee Jones drove a 1987 Ford LTD Crown Victoria with Will Smith riding shotgun! That was my introduction, my stepdad also drove one as his first car. A guy I knew in college had a 1996 F150 and the farmer he bought it off of converted it's 460 to run on propane.

I one bought one new. Yes, during the gas crunch! 1974 2dr. LTD Brougham. Ginger glow metallic. 460 V-8, C-6, 3.25 axle, trailer towing package, A/C, P/S, Front power disc brakes, auto. e/b and trunk release, l/h and r/h outside remote mirrors, Cloth beige interior, Split power bench front seat, tinted power windows, power locks, cornering lamps, convenience group, light group, bumper protection group, etc, etc. Only issues I ever had with it was a bad steering spool valve (blame Saginaw for that!) repaired under warranty and a lean surge at highway speeds. Richened the jets and that took care of that. Drove it for about 40,000 miles and sold it to a friend. Smoothest and quietest riding car in its price range by far! I miss that car.

In 2002 I bought a similar equipped car at the annual Decatur Swap Meet northwest of Ft. Worth the last weekend in February. Being at that time of the year you're taking your chances with the weather, but most of the time we lucked out. A fellow had come over from Azle with a light yellow with gold pad on the roof '76 LTD Landau coupe with 33K miles on it. When I saw the crank windows, I assumed it had at most a 400. Instead it had the 460 and virtually every option available in '76, including heavy duty suspension and factory dual exhausts. Manual AC, cruise, power seat, deluxe sound system with tape player, cream and gold vinyl interior. The downside was that it had gotten light hail damage while sitting on a friend's used car lot in Azle while the truck driver owner was on the road. Thus, I got it for $3,500. It drove as good as it sounds and I kept it until I moved back to Waco in 2005 and sold it to a collector from Longview in 2006 for $2,800 so I could buy my 4th '77 Grand Marquis when then had 51K miles on it. I kept it until 2019 and am now Marquisless.

"Somebody really loved this car." ... I really love this car !! Had a similar 1975 LTD in high school. I really liked the car but it would only run decent on premium gas which was tough on the teenage budget.

A beautiful example of the 1970's Big Fords. Glad to see that you are saving these big Fords and Mercury's. Thank you for your efforts. I am doing the same with 1980's and early 1990's Crown Victoria's and Mercury Grand Marquis LS.

I drove a 71 LTD 2 door coupe for years. Got it from my Dad, eventually gave it to my Son. Nearly had 200,000 miles on it when he sold it. I took for granted all the wonderful cars we had back then. When I see what's offered now I cry.

Had one of these in fire mist metallic! One of the best cars I ever had in reliability! Lost due to rust, frame in front of rear wheel! Even the tulip panel rotted ! Was a beautiful car though! I miss these land yachts! Bob Lutz was interesting as always!😎🤠

Especially in '73 and '74, Ford had really serious body/frame rust issues, to the point of class-action lawsuits. I never did find out what the root cause was, whether it was the poor quality of steel used in the plants, design problems, or skimping on rust protection measures during assembly.

The first car I fell in love with was my Nana's '73 LTD with the 400 (brown 2 door). I remember her swinging her right arm in front of me whenever she came to a quick stop to protect me. Great car, and many great memories and pics.

Beautiful car. Until recently I had thought the 460 to be unavailable in the Ford until 1974 when the 429 was discontinued. It would be interesting to know if it was a late addition to the engine lineup.
