    Greatest road trip soundtrack band ever. Seriously great driving music. Peter Garret sweated on me at a concert. Front row - you could see the sweat coming down off his head and down his arms like a sheet and then he would do that jerky dancy thing with his arms and - woosh - you couldn't avoid it! Now that's a concert experience! Amazing live. Still love 'em.

    The 7/4 opening riff going into the 4/4 verse a good decade before odd time, rhythmic and dynamic contrast became so popular with grunge bands. SO good. The whole album an absolute masterpiece.

    10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 is such a relevant and urgent album today in 2022 Peter Garrett delivers some of his best vocal performances on this timeless album that is still so relevant album almost 40 years later

      It's still relevant because the system hasn't changed at all; it's only gotten more complex to stop anything harming it. People are naïve to believe the Western world has really changed at all in even 70 YEARS

    Even if Garrett may or may not have lived up to the ideals of people now calling him a "sell out" - I hope he has also empowered you to take a stand in a life of meaning and purpose. If you're going to call him a sell out please take a stand of your own in a life that truly makes a positive difference. As a teacher myself, I know that I hope a number of my students will live lives of purpose that may make a positive difference beyond my own. It's a passing of the torch. Your turn now.

    One of the best live bands I've been lucky to have seen.
    They opened a show on the Sunshine Coast with this gem. When the song paused the audience politely clapped, some thinking that was the end of their introduction song.
    Then, the song restarted. The whole crowd were totally engaged. One of the best moments in my concert experiences.

      My memory was the Caringbah Inn in the middle 80s the shame is that it is just as relevant today as when it was written only the situation and actors have changed it breaks my heart to think we have come such a small distance in such a long time on such an important topic

      There is no real Australian Culture now. Globalisation, Mass Immigration of very different people and Ultra PC has done a real job on it. Think about it - when this song came out Australia only had a population around 15 million yet was punching well above its weight in music and movies on a global scale. Now we have nearly double that population and barely make any cultural impact at all.

    Once of the best bands ever to come out of Australia....especially one with something to say. !! Yes he may have 'sold out" but his intentions were good......if you don't take the party line you are shoved out anyway. !!! Peter and rest of band members have something to say and have been saying it for 40 years. Now that is persistence. !!!! Well done.

    I first seen this video on a music channel in Australia when I was there a little over four years ago. I wasn't familiar with their older songs because "Diesel and Dust" was their first album released here in the U.S..

      When I was 13, 14 or15 I used to hear these early Midnight Oil songs on an LA based station KROQ back in 82-83 85. It was a "New Wave"station. Way before "Diesel and Dust"

    One of the Oils' greatest songs. 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 was a monster album. It's still my favourite album by any Australian band. They also won my heart with Species Deceases, that's my favourite EP by any band ever.

      I’d say that’s because modern music is selfish and the themes are either narcissistic or self-pitying.
      There’s nothing of the wider world outside of one perspective.
      It’s all “the world looks terrible because I’m sad” or “I’m heartbroken and edgy because I broke up” or “we so cool because we party”.
      It’s enough to make your ears bleed

    August 4, 1985 Paolo Soleri Amphitheater, Santa Fe NM, opened for UB40. 34 years later STILL one of my favorite concerts. Vocal harmonies are awesome!

    Reviewed their first U.S. show for the Daily Cal newspaper in '84 in San Francisco, and this was one of their best songs live. I think PG said it was inspired by Rupert Murdoch. The crowd at Wolfgang's ate it up, and PG called it "really something special" but he found the slam-dancing "ridiculous."

    I saw them in Chicago in 2000 (I think) at the House of blues.. what a raw energenic show!!!

      For me it was US Forces. Bought 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 with saved up pocket money as a kid a few months later. As you say, there's no turning back. You can grow up but having grown up you can't grow back down again.

    This follow up to “Power and the Passion” on MTV was a hit or miss. I didn’t see or “Read About It” because it received light rotation for a month. However, I’m starting to like this song and would like to add to my music collection. Don’t be surprised if I play this song alongside a 2024 hot song called “ Hot Night” by Durante and HANA. The songs definitely have nothing to do with each other lol
