I think it's also worth mentioning what just happened to me. I purchased ISBNs from Bowker. They have an upsell page for copyrighting your book. They claim they're giving you discount by charging you $85 and they'll take care of the entire process. Well, I did it. They took my money, and I STILL had to pay the $65 filing fee. In other words, they ran off with my $85 and saved me about.... 5 minutes of headache. Wow. Don't do it. Their page is title "CopyrightsNow!" which is a property of DigiRights. I'm sharing this in the hopes that some of you that are thinking of purchasing your ISBNs through Bowker, DO NOT purchase the Copyright upgrade. They literally don't do anything for you other than ripping you off by claiming they're saving you bit of time.

Love and be careful with your rights to your creative work. It is imperative that you own the copyright to your creative work at all times. Even if you must be an anonymous creator, there must be someone on the other side that have your interests covered that you trust. If not, that precious creative flame that gives wealth, culture, and prosperity to all can flicker and disappear. Keep it safe.

Great video. Just one thing regarding copyright is that you already have it. You should officially register as Abby is suggesting, but you should know your work is already protected.
In many countries, including the United States, once you have created a novel in tangible form (such as writing it down or saving it to your computer), it is automatically protected by copyright. This means that your novel is protected by copyright law, even if it is not officially registered with the Copyright Office or does not use the copyright symbol (©). This automatic protection gives you certain exclusive rights, such as the right to copy, distribute, display and perform your work.
Although copyright protection is automatic, there are advantages to registering your novel with your country's copyright office. Registering your work gives you additional legal protection and makes it easier to defend your rights in the event of infringement. For example, registration in the US is usually required if you want to sue for copyright infringement.

New to your videos. Between you, Jerry Jenkins, and K.M.Weiland, I'm confident that I'll be able to confidently make the transition from screenwriter to book author. This video is a godsend as I have been wondering about this for a while. Questions - 1) If you use a pen name, is there a place for it when you apply for a copyright? 2) Does registering your book with the WGA provide sufficient protection? If it's good enough for a screenplay then why not? 3) The moment you register your copyright, is that when you can then use it, or do you have to wait for the letter? 4) Who puts the copyright in the book, you or the publisher? Thanks a million.

If you're publishing under a pen name, you will simply enter the pseudonym alongside your information in the appropriate fields during the registration process. (You can see the spot for a pseudonym at 10:23 on the lower right side of the screen.) As for publishing worldwide, you do not need to register a copyright for each country you publish in. The copyright is for one work and so you only need to register a copyright in the country you're based in. 😁 I hope that helps!

Thanks. In the UK ( and the EU ) there is no official record. You can take legal action. Authors who will sell into the US market should consider registering as Abbie did here, even though the international agreements in place are supposed to cover you, legal action may be difficult without an official US record.

I'm still working on my manuscript, but I'm part of an online writing group. I plan on copyrighting it before sending it out to people in the writing group for feedback since many of them are strangers. Then after getting feedback, making adjustments, and sending it to my editor, I plan on copyrighting it again as the "officially finalized manuscript." Would that be an exception to the rule of "only copyrighting the officially finalized manuscript"?

To obtain the strongest copyright protection, you should register your works before “shopping” it around to editors, publishers, writing group, contests, friends, and others. If, after you’ve received feedback and you want to update your manuscript, you can register those new changes via the $65 Standard Application.
To save money on copyright registration filing fees, and if your work qualifies, it may only cost you $45 to register your original version via the *Single Application* (aka, “One Work By One Author”). See this link: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ11.pdf
Write back if you’d like to receive US Copyright Office video tutorials links on how to prepare the Single & Standard Applications.

You are PHENOMENAL! Now that I have followed your steps to registering the copyright for my book, do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish? Thank you for this!

@Drjae wrote, “…do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish?”
The day the US Copyright Office (USCO) *“receives”* your completed and correctly-fill-out registration application + your deposit (a copy of your book) + your filing fee, that’s when it’s been officially “registered”
If you registered your work as UN-published, wait a few days before publishing it (listing, selling, licensing, sharing, etc.).
If may take a few weeks to receive your *Certificate of Registration* in the mail. Store it along with your book with your important papers. I store mine in a safe deposit box.

when you submit your file at the end, do you submit your unformatted version of the manuscript or the formatted version with title pages, chapter headings, and correct spacings? I have two versions and have been stressing about finalizing everything before I get my isbn and publish. My manuscript has just simple numbers at the tops of each chapter whereas my formatted file has already had the paper size changed, a space for my copyright page, as well as design choices added throughout the document. I just need to know which one to submit.

Thank you so much! In regards to registering a title, should that title include the series name and number?

      @cnlicnli 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@workingcanineproductions wrote, “In regards to registering a title, should that title include the series name and number?”
You should include a robust description (main registration title) of your book. The book’s finished (published) title can suffice. And you can also include your book’s series number with the main registration title, as well as your name with middle initial.
An example registration main title: “Dogs Mimicking Humans” (Series 1) by Suzie T. Jones.
If you’re registering a “physical printed published” book, you’ll likely have to submit (mail) TWO best edition copies to the US Copyright Office. If you’re registering an ebook or if the work is UN-published, you only have to submit one digital/electronic copy.

I wonder what the difference are for a comic book, what I want to work in, versus prose since it's a combination of visual and text work?

    • @cnlicnli
      @cnlicnli 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you feel your comic book is more of a TEXT-based story, then you can register the story along with its visual panels as a *literary work.*
If you feel your comic book is more VISUAL, then you can register it and its accompanying text as a *visual artwork.*

For a Children's Book. It will need to be illustrated and finshed before copyrighting, correct? So how am I protected if I go through Fiverr for an artist to illustrate it? Do I just tell them it is copyrighted?

Hi Abbie I have a concern regarding my upload to copyright gov. I was able to upload and I received a confirmation, but I am currently waiting for an email of approval. The problem is that I thought I was including my copyright text page with my book but it might have not gone thru. Can I still add the copyright text to my book when uploading to kdp or should I just not add the copyright text. I am not sure if the page change will make a big difference?

May I ask what happens if you choose to want a different name for your author name? Ie a popular yters who don't want their irl name on the books bc of their fans and stuff ? I don't want my irl name on the books I'm writing but to register for copyright idk if I can even do that and may have to do my name?

@Silent.Jester wrote, “May I ask what happens if you choose to want a different name for your author name?”
You have the option to *“register”* your literary works under your real name or an abbreviated version of your name (Penelope Smith to “Penny” Smith; Robert Smith to “Bob” or “Bobby” Smith), a pen name (pseudonym), or even anonymously.
Here’s the US Copyright Office’s informational link on “Pseudonyms”: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ32.pdf
The process to correctly register a pseudonym can be tricky, especially if you want to keep your legal name private. If you have questions, contact the US Copyright Office (USCO): (202) 707-3000 or 1 (877) 476-0778 (toll-free).

I found that I couldn't use any browser to work other than Firefox to use the copyright link. Unsure if that is a problem for others.
Also, it would have been good to mention what and where to place your copyright info on the book.
Do you have a tutorial that includes any changes-revisions to make with your copyright and when it should be done and how?
Otherwise, thank you for the tutorial it was helpful.

      That hiccup is common.

If you’ve previously registered an un-/published book with the US Copyright Office (USCO), and you’ve now updated it with “material changes,” then you’ve created a *“derivative”* work.
A derivative work is based on the ORIGINAL work of authorship. If you’re just making grammar and spelling corrections, a new registration may not be necessary. If your storyline has change, then a second (derivative) registration would likely be necessary.
To register a derivative work, use the on-line “Standard Application” ($65). Here’s the USCO’s video tutorial: th-cam.com/video/6gNkssUfYas/w-d-xo.htmlsi=694_srVYNFOwys__
To be best legally protected, you’re works should be immediately registered with the USCO -- do NOT delay.
