It was released briefly in '67 by Capitol Records but then withdrawn due to a lawsuit by MGM Records. It was re-edited in 1968 and released by MGM in '68. The edited recording contains two musique concrète pieces that combined elements from the original orchestral performance with elements of surf music and the spoken word, thus the slight differentiation between the two recordings. It was praised for its music and editing. Lumpy Gravy also happens to be one of my favorite Zappa albums.
I've been listening to the MGM version since it came out. Today in March 2022 was the first time I ever heard this fully uncut orchestral version of the album. What a revelation. I really had no idea existed until I stumbled on it by accident here on TH-cam. I typed in lumpy gravy expecting to hear my old favorite color and I was rewarded with the new treat

@@johnhenrycurry8209 It is about that in fact. The melody, however, was composed {and recorded as this version} two years prior to the broadcast of "All You Need is Love" in 1968. The lyrics were added later and sung by Ray Collins.
I never heard the original until now. I'm digging it. I'm used to the second version and enjoy it, but nice just to hear the instrumentation. Solid effort throughout. The master had such a way with melody and rhythm.
I believe the later version had a lot of dialogue. The Head in a Drum, and Pigs 'n Pony's jabber (or, I'm confusing this cd with We're Only in it For the Money. Hey, I'm drinking beer. I have both on CD, I'll get back to you when i'm sober.
You have to be impressed that Capitol Records A&R representative Nick Venet commissioned an album of orchestral music composed by Frank Zappa and spent $40,000 on the album. In 67 / 68, that's a lot of money,

I wouldn't say underrated as much as underappreciated. Zappa was never radio-friendly. A few good progressive stations in good college towns would sneak his records onto the air periodically, but outside of the stupid hits like Dancin' Fool and Valley Girl, you never heard "good" Zappa music. Certainly never on format radio. Critic reviews of the 68-72 era of Zappa's music was good, but without any exposure, underappreciated is more apt than underrated.

I was listening to one of the "Shut and Play Your Guitar" (I think)LP's, I'm a hardcore fan of Zappa music, as in nothing is too extreme; but an instrumental played and I said, "God what is this shit? I can't wait for it to be over." Then checked out the playlist, he was playing a tune he titled "Canadian Customs" ha-ha-ha, it still brings a smile to my face.
It is FUCKING LUDICROUS how rare this version of the album is, fuck finding a copy. I HAVEN'T EVEN FOUND MORE THAN A SINGLE IMAGE OF THE ORIGINAL COPY.
200 Motels has a lot of great music, one of the few times Zappa used vocal soloist and choir. Fantastic. I wished he would have edited all the Orchestral music out into a single album. Particularly the opening to the film with the Orchestral remake of Holiday in Berlin Full Blown. Outstanding. By the way, looks like Bela Bartok as your photo. Have you heard Bartok's String Quartet No. 4, 5th movement, Allegro molto?It's about as good as music gets written in 1928, it may as well be the anthem for Progressive Rock, 40 years ahead of anything else, particularly Fripp and King Crimson.

@@andragg The first time I encountered the term “progressive rock”, if I remember right, was in a Stereo Review, um, review of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s first record. The first cut on this album is “The Barbarian”, an arrangement of Bartok’s “Allegro Barbaro”. I bought this album before I read the record review, without knowing anything about it or about the group. I just liked the cover. So, yes, I’ve always associated Bartok and progressive rock. (I have the Emerson Quartet’s complete recordings of the Bartok quartets on CD, but I don’t recall that particular movement offhand. I’ll have to refresh my memory. Thanks.)
@@andragg I listened to the Bartok movement in question. It just sounds like typical Bartok to me. I object to your use (apparently in imitation of certain uninformed rock critics) of the term “anthem”, by the way. An anthem is a hymn. (A “national anthem” is a “national hymn”.)
Thank you so much !!!! I wondered what the original (or primordial) version sounded like. A lost masterpiece that makes the Verve version sounds like Zappa intentionaly salvaged it. I will now try to locate a cheap copy of the RSD vinyl relase for my collection.
This is pretty damn good, especially considering it was apparently written and arranged in 11 days. There's some interesting stuff not included on the later Verve issue (The latter part of the lovely Up & Down contains the seeds of the 'Golden Arches' motif from Uncle Meat, for example).

This is the first time that I've heard the Capitol album. It looks like a copy of Lumpy Money will have to be added to my ever-expanding Frank Zappa collection. Thanks for sharing.
I bought "We're Only In It for the Money" and "Lumpy Gravy" (1967 or 1968) when they first came out on Verve. I don't remember this Capitol version, but it turns out these tracks are available in the "Lumpy Money" CD set.
This, the Capitol version, is the original. It was almost released in 1967 but Verve Records bitched about Frank being their property, not Capitol's. So Frank butched the whole thing, inserted a lot of dialogues and other weird things, and gave it to Verve who released it almost a year later. That's the version we're all used to. This is the first version, as originally conceived by Frank Zappa, finally released now that there's no record company screwing it anymore.

Cool version of this album, thanks for sharing it! Very different from the one I'm used to listening to. Honestly this version has less randomness, some of which still makes me laugh, but I think this particular version has better flow for a "New Zappa listener:". (someone who is new to the Zappa world of musical craziness & may become overwhelmed by the obscure nature of the music).
If Frank's stuff came out years from now instead of years ago,it would still be ahead of its time. Will there ever be another even a little bit like him? We need it.
+sterioapple I don't think he was ahead of his time at all, he was just ahead of USA... People before him did that kind of stuff... John Cage, Stravinsky, Varese... Zappa just contributed to it and also appropriate himself those frame. He was a genius and a very clever buisness man too...
You're wrong, because you know what John Cage, Stravinsky, and Varese never did, and never will? "One Size Fits All', "Roxy & Elsewhere" and numerous other masterpieces that are completely outside anything created by the above composers. Zappa was ahead of them all in this regard.

Just learning about Frank now. Introduced to him in ‘97 on the Ice Storm soundtrack (Dirty Money); got Apostrophe(‘) only ten years ago. A long time between drinks. Now going through the back catalogue (stop 3, obviously). I am hearing this as a soundtrack to a dramatic movie. I can’t imagine being a musician being asked to play this! Obviously a lot of Zappa purists out there worrying about blue or green hats on Fuchal. I’m sure Frank was above and beyond that sort of crap! Whether this is the original or a remastered version of his work really isn’t relevant. It gives those of us without access to Frank’s work a means of learning about it in our own time. I actually asked frank what pipco Meant because i always heard that no one really knew,i met him when he was signing his book and back then i had no money and a fan noticed i had no book to be signed and he gave me the sleeve off his book.when it was my turn to have frank sign my book all i had was the cover and frank asked if there was a naked book in the store.that day he was telling everyone that he was only signing one thing per person,he signed two things for me that day and answered the question of pipco.....i asked him what does pipco mean and he said what are you referring to and i said the shirt youre wearing on your album and he responded what album? Anyways he said it stood for santa monica pipe company. Those were franks words not mine. The secret is out.....

I much prefer this release to the later Verve one. It's more musically pure, hell it's just more musical as the annoying (to me anyway) vocal interludes aren't included and there's a lot more music and less studio experimentation. And the music is terrific!
+Jammin Clemmons Apparently Ahmet and Diva are the ones in control, and Gail gave less of the trust to Moon and Dweezil compared to the younger two (20% each for Moon and Dweezil; 30% each for Ahmet and Diva). As of yet, it appears that Ahmet has learned some lessons from Gail, and not in a good way.
Intersesting......MOON and the Dweeze have always been closer to Frank. This begins to make sense. Gail was against others spreading Zappa's music for a profit. One cover band comes to mind, "Project Object" .....When Frank was alive, he was quoted - thousands of times, "Spread my music." If Project Object visits a town near you, I recommend the roadtrip. It's as close to Dweezil doing ZPZ as you can experience. Napolean Murphy Brock has toured and Ike Willis as well. -Cheers-Adam-Cheers-
He was an instructor at musicians institute for many yrs, was there the yr i was there 91-92...a good fella and an immense talent that sadly passed away. Happy to say i got to rub elbows with the man as well as several other Zappa alumni...that yr turned me into a much better musician as well, go figure. :)
I was getting nostalgic for great nights listening to jazz at the old Alfonse’s in Toluca Lake, CA one night and found a picture on the internet. Charlie Chiarenza managed the place but he was also a guitar player. He played in the Baja Marimba Band and with Burt Bacharach. Anyway - this picture - Frank, Tommy, Charlie and a couple other guys around the table at an Italian place in Sylmar. Everybody’s laughing. I don’t know if they are all Italian guitar players, but looks like a fun evening. Search “Tommy Tedesco Frank Zappa” and it should come up.

@@andragg The first time I encountered the term “progressive rock”, if I remember right, was in a Stereo Review, um, review of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer’s first record. The first cut on this album is “The Barbarian”, an arrangement of Bartok’s “Allegro Barbaro”. I bought this album before I read the record review, without knowing anything about it or about the group. I just liked the cover. So, yes, I’ve always associated Bartok and progressive rock. (I have the Emerson Quartet’s complete recordings of the Bartok quartets on CD, but I don’t recall that particular movement offhand. I’ll have to refresh my memory. Thanks.)
@@andragg I listened to the Bartok movement in question. It just sounds like typical Bartok to me. I object to your use (apparently in imitation of certain uninformed rock critics) of the term “anthem”, by the way. An anthem is a hymn. (A “national anthem” is a “national hymn”.)

Thank you so much !!!! I wondered what the original (or primordial) version sounded like. A lost masterpiece that makes the Verve version sounds like Zappa intentionaly salvaged it. I will now try to locate a cheap copy of the RSD vinyl relase for my collection.

This is pretty damn good, especially considering it was apparently written and arranged in 11 days. There's some interesting stuff not included on the later Verve issue (The latter part of the lovely Up & Down contains the seeds of the 'Golden Arches' motif from Uncle Meat, for example).
You can hear "King Kong" in "Foamy Soaky".

Frank is the #1 guy I think of when I think of a Musical Genius.
I bought "We're Only In It for the Money" and "Lumpy Gravy" (1967 or 1968) when they first came out on Verve. I don't remember this Capitol version, but it turns out these tracks are available in the "Lumpy Money" CD set.
This, the Capitol version, is the original. It was almost released in 1967 but Verve Records bitched about Frank being their property, not Capitol's. So Frank butched the whole thing, inserted a lot of dialogues and other weird things, and gave it to Verve who released it almost a year later. That's the version we're all used to. This is the first version, as originally conceived by Frank Zappa, finally released now that there's no record company screwing it anymore.
@@IozziEric it was released, albeit briefly, on four/and or/ eight track but was pulled very quickly. There are images of copies kicking around but I have never seen one for sale

Cool version of this album, thanks for sharing it! Very different from the one I'm used to listening to. Honestly this version has less randomness, some of which still makes me laugh, but I think this particular version has better flow for a "New Zappa listener:". (someone who is new to the Zappa world of musical craziness & may become overwhelmed by the obscure nature of the music).
Iv'e had this for a few years, I like it more than the secondary release from Verve truthfully. It has a cool raw-ness to it.
I think I might prefer this over the lumpy gravy we all know and love

I don't think he was ahead of his time at all, he was just ahead of USA...
People before him did that kind of stuff... John Cage, Stravinsky, Varese... Zappa just contributed to it and also appropriate himself those frame. He was a genius and a very clever buisness man too...
You're wrong, because you know what John Cage, Stravinsky, and Varese never did, and never will? "One Size Fits All', "Roxy & Elsewhere" and numerous other masterpieces that are completely outside anything created by the above composers. Zappa was ahead of them all in this regard.

Soundtrack From An Imaginary Movie.
Just learning about Frank now. Introduced to him in ‘97 on the Ice Storm soundtrack (Dirty Money); got Apostrophe(‘) only ten years ago. A long time between drinks. Now going through the back catalogue (stop 3, obviously).
I am hearing this as a soundtrack to a dramatic movie. I can’t imagine being a musician being asked to play this!
Obviously a lot of Zappa purists out there worrying about blue or green hats on Fuchal. I’m sure Frank was above and beyond that sort of crap! Whether this is the original or a remastered version of his work really isn’t relevant. It gives those of us without access to Frank’s work a means of learning about it in our own time.
Incredible is a word that doesn’t do this work justice. Frank Vincent Zappa 1940-1993 R.I.P.

I actually asked frank what pipco Meant because i always heard that no one really knew,i met him when he was signing his book and back then i had no money and a fan noticed i had no book to be signed and he gave me the sleeve off his book.when it was my turn to have frank sign my book all i had was the cover and frank asked if there was a naked book in the store.that day he was telling everyone that he was only signing one thing per person,he signed two things for me that day and answered the question of pipco.....i asked him what does pipco mean and he said what are you referring to and i said the shirt youre wearing on your album and he responded what album?
Anyways he said it stood for santa monica pipe company.
Those were franks words not mine.

You can find this on the compilation "Lumpy Money Project / Object", which contains also the "classic" version of Lumpy Gravy.
I wish the King Kong segment went on longer.
First time hearing the Capitol version. I like it a whole lot, but the Verve version was the one I heard first so I enjoy the dialogue in between. I need to get a copy of Lumpy Money now. Thanks for sharing this.

Grotesque and sarcasm are the essence of his music. All his life he played musical cartoons. Listening to this album I laughed 20 times😆.
I much prefer this release to the later Verve one. It's more musically pure, hell it's just more musical as the annoying (to me anyway) vocal interludes aren't included and there's a lot more music and less studio experimentation. And the music is terrific!

+Jammin Clemmons Apparently Ahmet and Diva are the ones in control, and Gail gave less of the trust to Moon and Dweezil compared to the younger two (20% each for Moon and Dweezil; 30% each for Ahmet and Diva). As of yet, it appears that Ahmet has learned some lessons from Gail, and not in a good way.
Intersesting......MOON and the Dweeze have always been closer to Frank. This begins to make sense. Gail was against others spreading Zappa's music for a profit. One cover band comes to mind, "Project Object" .....When Frank was alive, he was quoted - thousands of times, "Spread my music." If Project Object visits a town near you, I recommend the roadtrip. It's as close to Dweezil doing ZPZ as you can experience. Napolean Murphy Brock has toured and Ike Willis as well. -Cheers-Adam-Cheers-

He was an instructor at musicians institute for many yrs, was there the yr i was there 91-92...a good fella and an immense talent that sadly passed away. Happy to say i got to rub elbows with the man as well as several other Zappa alumni...that yr turned me into a much better musician as well, go figure. :)
I was getting nostalgic for great nights listening to jazz at the old Alfonse’s in Toluca Lake, CA one night and found a picture on the internet. Charlie Chiarenza managed the place but he was also a guitar player. He played in the Baja Marimba Band and with Burt Bacharach. Anyway - this picture - Frank, Tommy, Charlie and a couple other guys around the table at an Italian place in Sylmar. Everybody’s laughing. I don’t know if they are all Italian guitar players, but looks like a fun evening. Search “Tommy Tedesco Frank Zappa” and it should come up.
