Bugling Herd Bull Called in to 5 yards

  • September 16th, the rut is on!
If you're impatient and don't want to listen to me calling or him bugling, just skip to 6:40 to see the bull. ;) For those experienced callers, please excuse my poor calling, I'm still learning. Haha, but this was the first bull I've ever called in... And really, my first time ever trying! (Later this same day I called in two other satellite Bulls) There is car noise as the road was about 80 yards down the hill from where I was set up. But here's what happened.
We found a herd of elk bedded down in the thick trees off the side of the road. It was mid-day, so I snuck in uphill of them, to have the thermals in my face and started calling when they got up to move. I used a lost mew to make contact w/ the cows, who mewed back. At which point I switched to Assembly Mews, Long Mews, Whines and Demanding Mews as Chris Roe teaches. The cows began working my way with the bull in tow. After the cows had passed, I had my chance at the bull. And apparently he was convinced and came to round me up, walking w/in 5 yards of me.
I was standing there in jeans and a grey shirt, no camo. So when he got an eye-full, he meandered off back to his cows.
Chris Roe isn't joking when he says "Call them to your toes"! Best $50 I've ever spent on hunting elk. Check out his stuff at roehuntingresources.com

One of the best if not the best elk video's on the web.

Wow, Thank you! That feels like a bit of an exaggeration... but I appreciate the compliment. Haha, I too still love watching this a few years later.

First time you called in a bull eh? OH YOUR HOOKED NOW, every fall you will start rubbing your head on trees and begin herding your wife around the house. 👍👍

Lol, my 2 year old son is already hooked on bugling... and equally driving my wife insane.

Yeah, for real! Headed up this weekend, and praying something similar happen. ;) I've gotten far better at bugling too... so we'll see. Called in a couple of hunters last weekend. LOL, oops. Had to apologize for waisting their time.

@@MattRShort yeah well, while it might be fun to practice on calling them in, you are also educating them! Therefore making it more difficult for the next guy that might try to kill that bull!

The bull did not offer a decent safe shot opportunity, that turkey!!!

As I mentioned in the description, there was a road that you could see the elk from. We weren't the only spectators who stopped to watch them. I just drove down the road farther to get into a good position to call from. The people you hear are at their cars, not far from where the elk were bedded. My assumption is the elk got tired of humans being so close, taking pictures and got up to move to a more secluded spot. That's when I started calling them my direction.

If Yellowstone or another National Park, using calls is prohibited.

It's always nice to have the internet police around to shame people.

@@paulconnell4173 Whatever. If you shame that easily, then think about that. There are places to call, hunt, kill wildlife (and I do), and places to just give them a break (and I do). Too many idjits effing around in National Parks just for a selfie or a TH-cam clip.
