I remember a game designer saying that he was going to originally rebuild his sword from a broken shard and he was going to spread the black mist all over the map as well.
I always said there was Viego was done dirty; They went for the lowest common denominator when it came for character design, animations and voicelines. As you probably know, he was a big mysterious character until his release and people were hyped up for him becoming a champion. I understand that Viego's development was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, but at the same time, they could have pretty much put the project on hold
One of the best examples of consistency is Jhin. The voice lines he has with their lore enemies, noxians or some especific champions are good, the choir in the backgorund when he talks, the critic animations, the music and whistles when the match starts, the 4 obssesion in his kit. Riot have missed a lot of great workers with passion through the time.
Trundle has this same problem, but it works for him since he's a literal troll and it makes him look for funnier, especially with the attack speed boost from his W.
As a Trundle player, I think I would actually get *upset* if they gave him a second attack animation. Watching Trundle beat people to death via an endless stream of overhand swings is part of the joy of playing him. You are not playing Trundle to be a complicated guy, you are playing Trundle to run at people and bludgeon them to death.
@firetarrasque4667 I understand your point. But what about a royal blood trained by Camavor's finest in the way of knight swordsmanship? (Camavor was an ancient war-based expansionistic empire from the East, much like modern Noxus). Would that also mean an endless mono-tone stream of bonks, or would it mean more of a sophistocated and various sword flow?
@ I’m 100% with you about Viego. Riot is a multi-billion dollar company owned by a multi-*billion* dollar company, expecting them to put in enough work to make champions consistently high-quality is eminently reasonable. The fact that League can’t hold up to high quality standards after ten years of operation and God knows how much profit made is a major failure of management. I just also think that in Trundle’s *specific* case, his current setup is actually quite charming.
Can't remember if it was august who said that most special animations like the slow and knock down are passion projects by whoever handles their rig and champs aren't really expected to have them.
@@santiagojara8056 Wouldn't be surprised of such a statement, which is why I'm most mad with Riot's general work philosophy. To call passion projects what should be baseline quality standards for the king of MOBAs in 2024, given the range of success and money, is utterly embarassing.
Im more of a character design person but im super glad there is more people that care about this sort of stuff since its all related, Viego released in a time were Riot clearly was losing respect for a lot of artistic stuff in the league universe, considering he released with the worst event to date (mostly in the narrative department). Voicelines have also been greatly reduced in quantity the last few champion releases but at least Briar got jungle related voicelines (wich like you said is more than Viego), but other than that they are sadly going more for that format of voicelines for related champions mostly and a few more. In the animation part YES Yone is one of my favorite champs becouse of how smooth he is, nothing feels as good to play as Base skin Yone, also you didnt even mention he has different animations when he attacks with E. The Aatrox rework also had great care in animations and voicelines wich creates a very strong personality (yes Aatrox is my most played champion what coincidences). Lastly seeing your pinned comment no i didnt get this on reddit it was in my TH-cam recommended so you are getting seen, sorry if any of this was a lil wonky to read english is not my main language.
English is not my main language either, don't worry. Also, thanks for watching my video. I'm glad TH-cam is somewhat promoting this video, cause considering its length and the fact that I never upload anything, I wasn't expecting much consideration from the algorithm. Also yes, I did want to mention how Yone even changes Attack animations while in E after reaching a certain Attack Speed threshhold, but I didn't want to shift too much focus on Yone (since I gave him enough love in the video).
Feel like i finally found someone who cares about voicelines as part of the whole product. Animation downgrade aside, the decline in voicelines from the "golden years" of V.O (late 2015-2018) was gradual and no one seemed to care about and so riot moved on lowering and lowering the quality of V.Os. The latest Jinx Skin almost brought the feeling back of watching a new skin/champion voicelines during those years. Taunts finally coming back, having more than one quote for a champion they're very lnvested in, etc. A shame that the skin is a scam in terms of price. During the later 2015-2018 era there was like only one character with a low amount of voicelines, WW's rework, and even then he stands his own pretty well compared to the modern skins/champions.
Viego main here, brother i ve been playing already for months viego, and I never knew he has even a wraith form. Great video, I really thought viego had some smooth transition when switching into the mist mode but only that, literally the most satisfying part of its movement. Other than that I fully agree with you, and I hope they do some justice to viego!
Sadly they will not. Riot is a money making oriented company, it's not in its interest to spend so much effort and resources into fixing Viego the way he needs to be fixed. And aside from passionate players like us, and I'm very happy to discover so many liking my video, I'd say 90%+ of the playerbase doesn't notice nor care about these little things (which for me are not trivial). You'd need a petition involving the vast majority of the League community for something like that to remotely even starting to be taken into consideration. When I made this video I knew fully well; nevertheless, I did make this video (as you can read in the description) for the Reddit community, specifically r/leagueoflegends, mostly to raise awareness. And ngl, I also did that cause Rioters roam that subreddit a lot, so I just wanted a chance to be seen. Years ago I made a post about additional voiceline repertoire for Viego, and u/RiotBrightmoon himself answered me pleasantly surprised: www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/oze8li/comment/h7zzv79/?
I mean, some time ago Riot deliberately made a statement about how much their champions are yapping and that they will be cutting on unneeded interactions. This is not just Viego, the peak of talkatinveness was Aurelion Sol with his 30 minutes special interactions video. After that every champion has a lot less voicelines, although of course it would be much better if Viego had to say something more than just "YOU STOLE HER FROM ME" when hitting Gromp And about the animations - while you still run around as just Viego a lot, in combat Viego mostly spends time posessing someone, he is not a juggernaut to just hit someone for 10 seconds standing still, he has to use passive or he just dies. It's like you know how Udyr has a full stanceless model and you see it only at the start of the game or after respawning, why would you spend many resources on that. And even if he just autoattacks, half of the time he triggers his Q passive with unique animation, I don't know how could you just skip this. And those animations are supposed to be harsh and abrupt, Yone dances with blades because he is an ionian swordsman-duelist, and Viego is a king who just takes what he wants and doesn't care about anything aside from his goals It would be cool if he could hide his sword during homeguard animation, but if he had to do this in his normal running animation that would create visual clarity problems I believe, as without sword he looks like just a dude with scoliosis, his walk with sword on shoulders is supposed to look intimidating, maybe they could express it better but I wouldn't call it outright bad
Viego is such a cool character, but his animations and model in-game do him so dirty. The sad thing is that since he is so recent, Riot probably isn't going to update his visuals any time soon. With that aside, that was a great video! I enjoyed watching it from beginning to end. Do you plan on uploading more stuff like this with other champions? I'd be down to watch it, easily.
I think you're making valid points but couldn't the fact Viego's animations are underwhelming tie into weird development issues caused by Covid? The whole Ruined King event in general had a lot of shit hampered by covid so that may have been the cause of how weak he looks compared to other champs. I'm not excusing it but I do think it raises the question if it would have been better if covid didn't happen.
@@velvetgorge3844 even if that's the reason, there's no excuse. Halt development, postpone release. The issue is that corporations will follow the schedule doesn't matter the if the quality suffers because of it.
@@ex_oLL Yeah like I said I'm not making excuses but I do think that's a huge reason why Viego, and the Ruined King event in general, came out as it did. Feels more of a reason to blame the corporation behind Riot than it is the actual creatives behind it.
Note: Probably unintentional, but Ezreal had a brief moment of being a jungler. However, it's his thematic to be an adventurer- it would be foolish not to give him a line for entering uncharted jungle territories. Meanwhile Viego...
@@aubreyholdinggun They did a brilliant job with Ezreal. But the reason why they nerfed voicelines so much is because some players were complaining the champions were "talking too much". Of course they dont take into account feedback that requires them to put effort and resources, they only consider the one that diminishes them.
@@ex_oLL and that complaint could've easily been "the characters talk for way too long and way too often" but instead they(probably purposefully) took that feedback as "the champions have too many voicelines, give them less"
Great script, amazing editing. I really liked how you used specific examples of voice lines, attack cycles, movement animations, and so on. I play a lot of Yone so hearing exactly why his smooth animations feel so damn good was really nice. I always felt that Viego wasn't just missing something-he's missing a lot of things. I have a theory that the unbelievable number of interactions that Viego's "champ stealing" causes, such as gaining permanent max HP when he earns Swain or Sion stacks that persist even when he returns to normal... this kind of thing absorbed the entire budget for putting the character together.
"I just want the game to be good, to have some romanticism in it, some passion. I want the universe of League of Legends to go beyond a simple marketing strategy." Holy shit man, those were my exact thoughts just a couple of hours ago after seeing how they fumbled on that Jinx skin
Have you seen Gwen’s attack animaton? It’s the best one I’ve seen, since she has so many, but you never actually see it since E has only one autoatack animation lol
And that's okay. An ability needs to be clear to read. It's like asking for Viego's Q double-attack passive to have variant animations. But still, even if he costantly weaves Qs as part of his kit, that's no excuse to only give him 2 Attack variants.
Damn super high quality and informative! Viego is the reason I started playing league so idk if I ever really noticed since it was my baseline experience but pretty disappointing to see my fav champ be neglected like this
@@ex_oLLhonestly have you seen what people are listening to? Unless the mic is extremely shitty and even then, people would listen to anything and it's good practice to improve.
"then I will strike him down." Bro, you weren't EVEN PART OF THE CINEMATIC WHERE THEY BEAT HIM. Ruination was released at the worst possible time. They had to work on Valorant, TFT and Legends of Runeterra on top of it being a July event meaning it conflicted with ARCANE'S LAST REFINING TOUCHES before it was released on November. The perfect storm to make NOBODY at Riot even want to put any of their time and effort into Viego. Nobody liked him, nobody likes Viego except the fans. (Yet I love him. My very own Shadow Isles Garen boy lmao)
I have to say... this video, based on it's idea and description, is quite unfair. I mean, yeah, you're 100% right: Viego has development flaws... almost as like he was launched amidst a fucking pandemic (Yone too, but the 'problem' probably started in the end of it's development cycle). And i have to be clear, it's 100% riot fault that the champion came out 'incomplete' or 'clunky', even if i don't really think so, viego is much more like an melee ad caster than a yone-type of champion. BUT, based on the quote "Riot's lack of quality standards for champions throughout the years" this video should have been more focused in ACTUAL recent champions... As it don't really make sense to compare so heavily two champions of the same time frame, also.
@@pedroalonso431 I tried to include as many chanps both newer and older than Viego. The reason why Viego is the focus in because differrently from randonly spawned champs suchbas Aurora, Lillia or K'Sante fot example, he's a PILLAR of the very fabric of League of Legends's narrative and universe. So even though as I say in the end imo there shouldnt be more and less quality measure througout champions if not in an ascending direction given technology and funds growth, he's the last champ that should be treated like this. And also I won't lie, I made this video cause deep down I love Viego and I wish he har justice. But that will never happen.
Doesn't Viego have a special close range attack where he hits you with the hilt of his blade? Also Viego is technically not a auto champion, he weaves his passive double hit
yone also has 4 attack animations because of his azakana blade mechanic, making him him need 2 attack animations for 2 different weapons and viego passive double auto should also be considered an alternate attack asset, yeah like idk i appreciate the passion but as a game developer this kind of post always comes off as extremely demanding, it takes a lot of resources to make each and every one of these things happen, and resources just happen to be allocated differently each financial quarter and year it’s sad, but the team simply didn’t get the time required to cook with viego, because his presence as a playable character was a demand from higher ups (“we’re doing a ruination event, make us the ruined king”) which put it on a tight deadline unlike other champions that have sat in dev for over a year and there’s little to no merit in going back adding a ton of stuff to viego because end of day he feels fun to play without all of it in the era of champions viego is from riot was cooking extremely hard on several visually complex champions, viego is an unfortunate casualty of being a) visually simple in his base kit b) significantly complex in code work resources required c) on a stricter timeline it kind of all boils down to a sad clash between character and kit - viego is “THE Ruined King” but in game there is no ceremony ever to being base viego, the champion is all about possessions, so his base kit is weak, so his base gameplay is simple, so his base assets are simple.
Thanks for bringing this up. His "third" special Attack animation with the hilt of the sword only occurs as a 3rd strike, following Attack1 and Attack2 in order, only when Viego is within specific close-up range value. Definetly a touch of appreciated detail, but not as consistent as the standard Attack animations. My point still stands: the standard Attack variants should be a MINIMUM of 4 animations; the close range variant should be a +1 (for a total of 5). Again, much appreciated, but he's still below the average quality. The fact that his kit focuses on spamming his Q is no sufficient reason for the lack of animation variety on a melee champion.
@@gggremlinIf we were talking about a normal game, stuff like this probably would be quite demanding. But Riot is a multi-billion dollar company, League is their flagship product, and the fact that negative variance like this (and, even more so, the PlayStation 2-ass clunky models on some champs) is still normal and expected after over a decade of the game’s life - When you have as many resources as Riot does, that represents a *tremendous* failure of management.
Fantastic video bro. This champion has/had; a videogame, a gamemode, a novel, events both in wr and lol and he is really fun to play too (imo). It ruins me to see how much he lacks in league compared to champs like aatrox. 12:42 😭😭

Excellent analysis🔥 Hope it gets more attention. What also frustrates me is when riot choose more boring and simple champion design, so it will be easier to produce skins
to think viego was supposed to have a built in BORK that he had to gradually complete through killing champs but they revoked the idea since it has to have unique animations each stages of the BORK and he is reduced to this. damn.
Maybe its due to the fact I just really enjoy the design but I feel like soulfighter viego is extremely smooth and well done especially compared to base viego. He doesnt have a transformation (and even loses a mist form which is my main issue with the skin) but the design/effects/and details like the hitlag on autos (as a fg player i fucking love that addition) makes SF viego feel better than most other legendaries I own
@Aklloll I understand and respect your point, despite not being a fan of SF Viego myself. SF Viego was also given additional voicelines, but considering they moved baseline features to something you have to pay for, this is just miserable on Riot's end.
I know it might not help as an argument but wasn’t Viego released during Covid? The drop in quality was not just present in Champion releases but also events. Especially the Event.
would love to see an analysis of aatrox. the poor guy's animations range from amazing to unfinished to literally reused from his old ass 2013 model. a real shame imo.
Couldn't tell this was your first video. What duobles up on the voice line issue is that as the roster gets bigger the odds of hearing a specific voice line when encountering a specific champion gets more rare. One thing that I'll cry about to the end of days is legendary skins. To hear the voice line I paid for the other plays HAVE to be wearing the correct skin. Why? How many voice lines have you never heard because your opponent isnt wearing the correct skin?
@@Plight_ Yes I understand what you're referring to. While I think skin universe specific voicelines are cool, it's sad to see only Legendary have them. Legendary High Noon Yone will recognize and talk to other Epic High Noon skins like Leona, Rell, Senna etc. etc. but they won't have anything skin related whatsoever. Riot used to have special voicelines for Epic Skins, see Dragon Master Swain I showed in the video, Arcade Ezreal or the first iteration of Pentakill Karthus. Now they just cba anymore, apparently. They noticed people dont care enough and they can save money, resources and time. There's multibillion company ethos for you.
@ex_0LL I remember when tahm released and he had so many lines the joke was that he just doesn't shut up. I can't remember but I believe jhin says "you have too many lines" Champions like asol had a lot of lines for buying items too. The universe felt more cohesive when champions talked alot.
Technically he's got three attacks if you include the special double hit from his passive, which will be happening far more often in a fight than normal basic attacks. And since it IS a double hit, he "technically" has four swings. That said, I play Viego a lot, enough that at times I could be seen as a Viego main, I don't disagree with you. Above anything else they could do for Viego aesthetically, the one thing I want is his wraith form as a toggle. It looks beyond cool. One fun thing they could do is add a quest for Viego: "Regain your lost blade: Purchase 'Blade of the Ruined King' before anyone else." Reward: The Blade of the Ruined King gains increased effectiveness (Passive effects on the item would be stronger as a reward) and visually, he would hold the actual sword, draped in his ghostly glow rather than a spectral version of it. There could even be an animation of him transforming the item into the enhanced version. Failure: No negative, no benefit.
i think yone having different auto animations is because of his passive no? kinda like sett his second blade does something different so its understandable that they added another animation for visual clarity but for the homeguard part i usually just make it look like he hops by stopping a second after issuing a movement command. its fun "bunny hopping" to lane
I don't know if it's true, but when Riot first added Viego to the game, were they planning to make his sword differently in the game? When we start the match, Viego will start with a small sword and when he gets a kill, when he gets an item, he will become stronger with his sword and become what we see now. Is this information true? As a Viego player, I hope we can all contribute to Viego getting the value it deserves.
Correct. That was one of his first development drafts. He was meant to be a late-game scaling monster, but they discarded the idea for the Possession mechanic and the reset design. One of his first designs even involved the Black Mist engulfing all of Summoner's Rift. But they discarded that too.
I feel like Viegos Auto attacks are supposed to look a bit janky and sluggish. Viego never was a sword fighter the only thing he fights with is pain and rage. They nailed that in my opinion. I do have to agree that the attack to toggle being missing is kinda sad though
What about Viego's passive trigger auto attack? That one has a toIdle, toRun, and toWalk with 2 different attack animations. I think you should've mentioned that instead of omitting it
Legacy architecture is your answer. Viego is already incredibly buggy thanks to his passive. Adding transitional or special animations to the mix actively makes this worse. Yes you always have the possession animation, but what about situations of differing ping? Suddenly you have mismatches between transitional and key animations (such as idle). Riot keeps him this way on purpose.
A viego vgu wouldn't even be hard to make he doesn't have that much skins. Just make the same thing u you made with teemo. Add animations, couple interactions. AND PLEASE MAKE HIM MORE BADASS . Viego is one of the most important persons in runterra and he looks like a fcking stick in game. Even if it's a quite recent champ riot should prioritize viego as one of the next vgus. It's one of the most balanced champs his kit is perfect everything is fine but the model looks bad, every animation is disgusting and his ult is so underwhelming that it feels like it's a classic spell. There's also all the buggy interactions when you want to possess.
@@louisgari4294 The buggy interactions very recently were straight up cut out of his voiceover because of their inability to attach them to the proper action label.
Excellent, well researched and wonderfully explained video. Beautiful stuff!
@@RooblesYT Glad it hit the mark!
Everything related to "The Ruination" was such a mess.
Frankly, Viego got done dirty by his release. It reminds me of how Riot botched the Ruination event too.
Winterblessed Senna has voice lines when she is fighting dragon and voice lines when fighting baron... AND SHE IS A SUPPORT
Well, she was made to be a ADC/Sup, so I think it's fair
Well you're expected to assist those epic monsters
So? If you're not roaming to fight grubs, dragon or baron as a support you're useless
Years ago I made a post about additional voiceline repertoire for Viego, and u/RiotBrightmoon himself answered me pleasantly surprised:
www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/oze8li/comment/h7zzv79/?
I mean, some time ago Riot deliberately made a statement about how much their champions are yapping and that they will be cutting on unneeded interactions. This is not just Viego, the peak of talkatinveness was Aurelion Sol with his 30 minutes special interactions video. After that every champion has a lot less voicelines, although of course it would be much better if Viego had to say something more than just "YOU STOLE HER FROM ME" when hitting Gromp
And about the animations - while you still run around as just Viego a lot, in combat Viego mostly spends time posessing someone, he is not a juggernaut to just hit someone for 10 seconds standing still, he has to use passive or he just dies. It's like you know how Udyr has a full stanceless model and you see it only at the start of the game or after respawning, why would you spend many resources on that.
And even if he just autoattacks, half of the time he triggers his Q passive with unique animation, I don't know how could you just skip this. And those animations are supposed to be harsh and abrupt, Yone dances with blades because he is an ionian swordsman-duelist, and Viego is a king who just takes what he wants and doesn't care about anything aside from his goals
It would be cool if he could hide his sword during homeguard animation, but if he had to do this in his normal running animation that would create visual clarity problems I believe, as without sword he looks like just a dude with scoliosis, his walk with sword on shoulders is supposed to look intimidating, maybe they could express it better but I wouldn't call it outright bad
I never even realised Veigo had a wraith form. This video is so great. Thank you for this!
Is this AI voice for an English second language narration?
The love they didnt show to his aspect and voice they did invest into his spaguetti champ must be a nightmare to maintain

Really would, especially on a video about appreciating putting care in artistic craft, it's insane that this person opted for AI voice-over 💀
Great script, amazing editing.
Outsanding video. Clearly youve put a lot of care in to it. Looking forward for more.
riot just stopped putting love and care into their projects
now we get exalted skins instead

Have you seen Gwen’s attack animaton? It’s the best one I’ve seen, since she has so many, but you never actually see it since E has only one autoatack animation lol
And that's okay.
An ability needs to be clear to read.
It's like asking for Viego's Q double-attack passive to have variant animations.
But still, even if he costantly weaves Qs as part of his kit, that's no excuse to only give him 2 Attack variants.
In Gwen's E's defense, there's only one way to use scissors at max range that she doesn't already do normally lol
Don’t let this distract u from the fact that Viego did nothing wrong. Free my boy 😢

But that will never happen.
hadn't uploaded in 2yrs... imma sub
Doesn't Viego have a special close range attack where he hits you with the hilt of his blade?
Also Viego is technically not a auto champion, he weaves his passive double hit
yone also has 4 attack animations because of his azakana blade mechanic, making him him need 2 attack animations for 2 different weapons
and viego passive double auto should also be considered an alternate attack asset, yeah
like idk i appreciate the passion but as a game developer this kind of post always comes off as extremely demanding, it takes a lot of resources to make each and every one of these things happen, and resources just happen to be allocated differently each financial quarter and year
it’s sad, but the team simply didn’t get the time required to cook with viego, because his presence as a playable character was a demand from higher ups (“we’re doing a ruination event, make us the ruined king”) which put it on a tight deadline unlike other champions that have sat in dev for over a year
and there’s little to no merit in going back adding a ton of stuff to viego because end of day he feels fun to play without all of it
in the era of champions viego is from riot was cooking extremely hard on several visually complex champions, viego is an unfortunate casualty of being
a) visually simple in his base kit
b) significantly complex in code work resources required
c) on a stricter timeline
it kind of all boils down to a sad clash between character and kit - viego is “THE Ruined King” but in game there is no ceremony ever to being base viego, the champion is all about possessions, so his base kit is weak, so his base gameplay is simple, so his base assets are simple.
Fantastic video bro.

to think viego was supposed to have a built in BORK that he had to gradually complete through killing champs but they revoked the idea since it has to have unique animations each stages of the BORK and he is reduced to this. damn.
@@barnaclecrucifix1604 And to think the whole Summoner's Rift was intended to be entirely engulfed in Black Mist in every match he'd be played in...

One fun thing they could do is add a quest for Viego:
"Regain your lost blade: Purchase 'Blade of the Ruined King' before anyone else."
Reward: The Blade of the Ruined King gains increased effectiveness (Passive effects on the item would be stronger as a reward)
and visually, he would hold the actual sword, draped in his ghostly glow rather than a spectral version of it. There could even be an animation of him transforming the item into the enhanced version.
Failure: No negative, no benefit.
i think yone having different auto animations is because of his passive no? kinda like sett his second blade does something different so its understandable that they added another animation for visual clarity
but for the homeguard part i usually just make it look like he hops by stopping a second after issuing a movement command. its fun "bunny hopping" to lane
Wow! I really did not understand how little of a fuck Riot gave about the Shadow Isles!
That helps explain why the Ruination was so shit.
Apenas voy por el minuto 2 pero ya te ganaste un nuevo sub, buen video🚬🗿
Soul fighter is literally pay to win lmao.
Can you make a video about the champion that has the highest quality and the most care put in? I really Wonder who would that be.
my money is on fiddle
What about Viego's passive trigger auto attack? That one has a toIdle, toRun, and toWalk with 2 different attack animations. I think you should've mentioned that instead of omitting it
Legacy architecture is your answer. Viego is already incredibly buggy thanks to his passive. Adding transitional or special animations to the mix actively makes this worse. Yes you always have the possession animation, but what about situations of differing ping? Suddenly you have mismatches between transitional and key animations (such as idle). Riot keeps him this way on purpose.
