For this series I thought it would be fun to mimic Neil’s setup as closely as I could with my Pearl Masterworks kit. It took a bit of practice to get used to the tom positions, but it was a blast to play Rush songs on the “Rush” kit. I tried to match the tunings as well. I had never tuned my toms that high before, but it made those cascading Neil Peart tom fills really sing!
Now a little history...
Back in the summer of 2005 my dad was having band practice at our house and the drummer in that band, Tim Mallman, brought over “Rush in Rio” and my life was forever changed. That concert DVD was truly my first foray into the world of more complex, melodic, and compositional drumming…which led me down the path to discover some of my other favorite bands, and drummers, such as Mike Portnoy, Todd Sucherman, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Simon Phillips, and so many others. So thank you, Timmy! And thank you, Alex, Neil and Geddy for 40+ years of awesome music!!

@@mikehetzel hey Mike just saw your Subdivisions cover. Ive seen a few other drummers cover this...but i have to say...yours is my fave. You got the correct drum sounds man. They sound very close to Neils kit...maybe the splash was a hair off. Im not a drummer...but i AM a musician of nearly 40 years. Anyway...you seem to play this song using the same drums in the same order with the right rhythms and right feel. Keep doin what youre doin. Awesome cover...as others have said...Neil would be proud. Aint much better of a compliment than that!

Kick ass. Makes me want to cram an ekit out here in my little camper. I moved to guitar in 2018 after 10 years no drumming. I played 27 years and missed it so damn much. Sadly I had to put my priorities first due to the kids and eviction risk. I wouldn't trade the custody for the drums. Now I can finally play again. Just need the funds to get a safe kit to hold me over and make music on my channel. Ironically not a single drum video yet. Hahaha
