As a pilot, I'd lose my rating (and probably go to jail) if the NTSB saw a video of me failing to operate the controls of my aircraft while I play with a camera. The most basic rules are, 1. Aviate, 2. Navigate, 3. Communicate. None of those include videography. You are a danger to everyone and should not be allowed to fly...period. #NTSB
Tell that to the other aircraft that are in the air that you are endangering while you are doing anything BUT piloting yours. Karma was sending you a message. It only takes a few seconds from the time you notice a powered aircraft coming straight at you to impact. LESS if you are facing the sun. I have 2 dead friends from 2 separate incidents where a distracted pilot caused a mid-air collision. One was because 2 lawyers got a new glass cockpit in their Cirrus and were landing at an airport with glider operations and crashed into the tow pilot (who had the right of way) directly broadside because they were not looking out the window, they were using the glass cockpit to land. How do you hit a plane towing another plane by a 200ft rope broadside...easy...you screw around with electronic gadgets instead of pilot your aircraft. You should change the title to "How to be an irresponsible, shitty pilot and then pretend you have no responsibility". At LEAST add a verbal disclaimer IN the video telling kids this is NOT responsible piloting...hell, it's not even responsible camera-ing. How important do you think you are that you need THAT many cameras on you showing everyone how shitty of a pilot you are? You have a camera that films the camera you drop?!?! But I'm sure, since you are such a good pilot, that you added up all of that weight properly to make sure your aircraft was within weight limits AND the straps can support it...oh... right... Just saying, if I had written the autofocus code, I would tell it to focus on the center of the frame, the dynamic, moving objects of the frame, faces and/or the average distance of objects utilizing the majority of the frame. I cannot imagine what algorithm would choose a macro focus on the table instead of all that more interesting stuff at center frame. I assume the focus mechanism was damaged in the fall or maybe it was set to manual focus, which is something that all cameras SHOULD have! Because autofocuses are agonizingly idiotic on every cam Ive owned.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appeared to be filmed entirely automatically by a robotic drone set to follow you + an onboard mounted selfie cam. I'm guessing that both cams were GoPros as well? Now that is a good setup that leaves you free to focus on some awesome piloting that truly makes me jealous of your life! But, it's not convincing me that piloting while filming is a good idea, or that a $7k cam has much advantage. My $100 cam has a 32x optical zoom lens that is rock steady (usually) at max zoom. BTW, I am currently prototyping a unique photography drone running my own flight and camera controllers that focus on automated videography using motorized PTZ camera gimbals and real time object tracking/recognition to drive the flight control. It will be far superior to the DJI drone thats currently popular. It sounds like exactly what you need! You could use just the gimbal, mounted on your aircraft, with the camera controller and remote display to allow perfect automated filming while you focus on piloting. Let me know if you have any suggestions for other features that would be helpful!

The only exception to this is if an object displaces more than it weighs e.g. a feather. you can find the force that the object hit the ground using kinetic energy, which would require mass .5mv^2

The only thing making the difference is the friction the air produces. which of course affects the speed of the camera, but it is relatively low and since the speed is not that high it can be ignored. if speeds were about 200 to 250 km/h (124 - 155 mph) we wouldn't be allowed to ignore the friction. since it gives us a maximum speed an object can accelerate to.

Roughly $3 per thousand veiw minutes on this type of video last I heard. Tax and youtube combined takes about half of it So he could have made $30k on the video if each person watched an average of 5 minutes. My flight instructor drummed into me the first rule of piloting: "Fly the plane!" And for the last 20-years I have honored that rule. Clearly this pilot had much more on his mind than flying. It was so important to him that he get his footage. Now he has spawned an unbelievable glut of mean-spirited comments. Each new wave of insults and comebacks makes me sadder than the last. And it is so ubiquitous on TH-cam! I guess it is just the simple fact of anonymity that sets these maniacs free. I would bet that none of them would be so insulting if their real names and addresses were shown!
Agreed. As a ppg pilot, this worried me. Not much awareness, fumbling with heavy objects and a strap so long that it could reach a prop. This wasnt a bright and shiny moment in ppg history.
Confound all these straps and safety measures. Into the propeller they go!! A camera like that, I'd double-tether it to my underarm with a custom-made arm band with Velcro and straps no longer than half an arms length so I always knew where I had it, always keeping in mind, it's a long way down, with fast-moving parts right behind me. While damage to ones property does suck and the probability is fairly small, being careless with fairly heavy equipment at altitudes like that isn't smart, as it could easily and fatally injure a person on the ground.
Here's a thought: don't bring $7,000 cameras with you when you go flying and not have a failsafe rope attached to the front bottom of the seat and the camera so if you accidentally drop it it doesn't turn into -$7,000.

I flew for 50 years I wouldn't let him in the aircraft, situational awareness wasn't seen in this pilot at any point.
I was thinking this guy shouldn't't fly at all, he drops his camera then I seen something else fall and then he lets crap go into his prop which could have just as easily got in while he was flying
As a pilot, I'd lose my rating (and probably go to jail) if the NTSB saw a video of me failing to operate the controls of my aircraft while I play with a camera. The most basic rules are, 1. Aviate, 2. Navigate, 3. Communicate. None of those include videography. You are a danger to everyone and should not be allowed to fly...period. #NTSB

I have 2 dead friends from 2 separate incidents where a distracted pilot caused a mid-air collision. One was because 2 lawyers got a new glass cockpit in their Cirrus and were landing at an airport with glider operations and crashed into the tow pilot (who had the right of way) directly broadside because they were not looking out the window, they were using the glass cockpit to land. How do you hit a plane towing another plane by a 200ft rope broadside...easy...you screw around with electronic gadgets instead of pilot your aircraft.
You should change the title to "How to be an irresponsible, shitty pilot and then pretend you have no responsibility".
At LEAST add a verbal disclaimer IN the video telling kids this is NOT responsible piloting...hell, it's not even responsible camera-ing.

There are very few tv's that have the output that match 4k,, you can get them if you want to pay for it,, but most people still run 1080.

I didn't drop the gopro. The mount actually broke from fatigue caused by the vibrations. Gopros are great but they are very limited in the zoom.

Go pro doesn't have a zoom. It's a fixed focal lens so getting a close image of another pilot is very difficult so yes, it's worth it.

Just saying, if I had written the autofocus code, I would tell it to focus on the center of the frame, the dynamic, moving objects of the frame, faces and/or the average distance of objects utilizing the majority of the frame. I cannot imagine what algorithm would choose a macro focus on the table instead of all that more interesting stuff at center frame. I assume the focus mechanism was damaged in the fall or maybe it was set to manual focus, which is something that all cameras SHOULD have! Because autofocuses are agonizingly idiotic on every cam Ive owned.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appeared to be filmed entirely automatically by a robotic drone set to follow you + an onboard mounted selfie cam. I'm guessing that both cams were GoPros as well? Now that is a good setup that leaves you free to focus on some awesome piloting that truly makes me jealous of your life! But, it's not convincing me that piloting while filming is a good idea, or that a $7k cam has much advantage. My $100 cam has a 32x optical zoom lens that is rock steady (usually) at max zoom. BTW, I am currently prototyping a unique photography drone running my own flight and camera controllers that focus on automated videography using motorized PTZ camera gimbals and real time object tracking/recognition to drive the flight control. It will be far superior to the DJI drone thats currently popular. It sounds like exactly what you need! You could use just the gimbal, mounted on your aircraft, with the camera controller and remote display to allow perfect automated filming while you focus on piloting. Let me know if you have any suggestions for other features that would be helpful!
+Eric Denny Focus was on the table due to the fall affecting the backfocus. Basically, the focusing function was damaged as well as the ability to focus on anything far away.

you can calculate it:
it fell about 3 sec until it hit the ground.
Objects falling to the ground accelerate with ~9.8 m/s²
therefore the time it hit the ground it had accelerated to 29.4 m/s
to measure the height we need the average speed so we roughly estimate:
after 1 sec --> 9.8 m/s
after 2 sec --> 18.6 m/s
after 3 sec --> 29.4 m/s
(best would be integral.... but since we don't need exact number here this estimation is well acceptable ;) )
--> average: 19.6 m/s since it fell 3 sec
19.6 * 3 *(m*sec)/sec --> 58.8m --> very roughly 192ft ;)

you can find the force that the object hit the ground using kinetic energy, which would require mass .5mv^2

If you let fall a hammer and a feather on the moon (or anywhere a vacuum is) both items hit thee floor at the same time. The only thing making the difference is the friction the air produces. which of course affects the speed of the camera, but it is relatively low and since the speed is not that high it can be ignored. if speeds were about 200 to 250 km/h (124 - 155 mph) we wouldn't be allowed to ignore the friction. since it gives us a maximum speed an object can accelerate to.

In this day and age that is, in itself, quite admirable. Hopefully, you had some sort of insurance on your precious Sony although if it were available I would bet it would be quite expensive.
I am a 72 year old who amassed over 6000 hours in Private and Commercial (Corporate) flying and am no longer able to engage in my lifelong passion (medical restrictions) so I wish you well in your flying regardless of your future flight intentions.

Tax and youtube combined takes about half of it So he could have made $30k on the video if each person watched an average of 5 minutes. My flight instructor drummed into me the first rule of piloting: "Fly the plane!" And for the last 20-years I have honored that rule. Clearly this pilot had much more on his mind than flying. It was so important to him that he get his footage.
Now he has spawned an unbelievable glut of mean-spirited comments. Each new wave of insults and comebacks makes me sadder than the last. And it is so ubiquitous on TH-cam! I guess it is just the simple fact of anonymity that sets these maniacs free. I would bet that none of them would be so insulting if their real names and addresses were shown!

Agreed. As a ppg pilot, this worried me. Not much awareness, fumbling with heavy objects and a strap so long that it could reach a prop. This wasnt a bright and shiny moment in ppg history.

A camera like that, I'd double-tether it to my underarm with a custom-made arm band with Velcro and straps no longer than half an arms length so I always knew where I had it, always keeping in mind, it's a long way down, with fast-moving parts right behind me. While damage to ones property does suck and the probability is fairly small, being careless with fairly heavy equipment at altitudes like that isn't smart, as it could easily and fatally injure a person on the ground.

Here's a thought: don't bring $7,000 cameras with you when you go flying and not have a failsafe rope attached to the front bottom of the seat and the camera so if you accidentally drop it it doesn't turn into -$7,000.
