  • For a mega city like Lagos, accommodation is a big challenge, but when residents turn bridges to homes, it calls for concern and action. Such a travesty was witnessed last week in lkoyi, where individuals who paraded themselves as landlords, took advantage of the housing situation in Lagos to illegally allocate 86 under-bridge apartments to tenants for 250,000 naira rent. The State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources removed all the structures. 23 persons have so far been arrested, as the law will take its course.

To begin, the discourse about citizens residing beneath bridges and enjoying uninterrupted electricity raises ethical concerns regarding the government's approach to funding. However, let's take a moment to explore alternative perspectives.
    1. The government's displacement of these citizens lacks a comprehensive resolution, juxtaposed with its continued appropriation of resources from the populace ( This means that when the government relocates these citizens, it doesn't provide a complete solution to their situation. At the same time, the government continues to take resources from the people. It's highlighting a contradiction: the government doesn't fully address the needs of these displaced citizens while still taking from the population).
This raises questions about the government's commitment to addressing the needs of innocent citizens who struggle while certain officials indulge in malfeasance, diverting resources intended for public welfare toward personal gain. This situation underscores broader issues such as unemployment, rising living costs, and the plight of graduates unable to secure employment, often leading to desperate actions. Addressing such systemic problems warrants a focus on holding accountable those in positions of authority who engage in corrupt practices, thus fostering a more equitable and just society.
