Metal Detecting Abandoned 1820's Stone Bridge

- This stone bridge was built in the 1820s and is the largest one in the area from that historic time. The bridge was abandoned some years ago and is rapidly succumbing to floods and the weather. On this day I search with my metal detector in the waters below, under, and above the bridge. The river was a little high and very cloudy this day due to recent rains. Burt with time, I do find some interesting artifacts.

Have a Garrett ACE 400. Is it waterproof to totally go under water.
@@laker3 I think chigg has a video out on how to waterproof a detector, I personally wouldn't try to get into the water without sealing it up

We have a almost identical bridge in our town that was built around the same time. I think it was rebuilt around 1900 and fell into disrepair after it wasn’t used for traffic anymore. They’re currently spending a boatload of money to rebuild it again. It’s nice to see landmarks preserved and a shame when they’re at the point this bridge is where it’s probably beyond saving.

I bet the men who built that bridge were mighty proud when it was done and celebrated down there in the creek with some stiff drinks while they admired their work and enjoyed the sun. Then they packed up and headed to the next job.... now it sits there a couple hundred years later in silence.

you found Silver! well sort of since 1943 nickels were 35% silver. I have yet to find a silver coin metal detecting. that really is a gorgeous bridge though, its a shame no agency maintained it to keep it from falling apart.

If that's where I think it is, somewhere on the downstream side you will find a Springfield ram rod, or parts thereof. We did some filming there about 20 years ago and my ram rod got stuck in my musket. We decided to shoot it out and filmed it. Didn't make the final cut but it was a once in a lifetime experience! :)

I think checking the road on both sides leading up to the bridge 50 yards out may yield some other coins. People definitely walked that road leading up to the bridge.

Hey, hat was a war nickel! 43 with the big mint mark over the dome like that are SILVER,! Great find.
Ever hear of the channel Below the plains? This Guy Tom Askjem digs privy or out house sites from years ago and finds tons of bottles from the late 1800s to early 1900s was wondering if you ever dug at any old house sites.
shame that historical bridge is just being left to fall down. at least you got to expirience it while it was still there.

It's too sad that such edifice is left to its demise. Such landmarks are also part of the culture for those of its local location.
