- The Polar Express both bothers and brings me joy. It is one of the movies I have to watch each Christmas. But what is with the Hobo? Is he a ghost? An angel? People have been wondering for years.

My favorite Christmas movie where Tom Hanks's son whose narration is by Tom Hanks gets invited by Tom Hanks to go see Tom Hanks, but also gets help from Tom Hanks when he needs it.
Robert Zemeckis: "Well since it's motion capture, we only need 3 actors."
I loved the scene in the Caboose when the doubting boy, the believing girl, & the defeated poor kid sing a trio.
Life is not an accident we have to make it hapoen.
I also love "We Need Alittle Christmas" from Auntie Mame
I love this film to bits, and I really like the vagueness of some of the plot elements. It’s neat how the hobo is never explained, or how the spirit of Christmas can be interpreted in any way by the audience rather than a definitive answer.
This analysis is fantastic, it really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing!
I often wonder if the Hobo is Santa in "undercover boss" mode.
I don't celebrate christmas, but this movie is a favorite of mine. I really understood the poor kid.
It will be interesting to see how many views this will get during this Christmas season….nice to see how you broke this one down.
Thanks! It will be interesting.
the polar express is a fantastic Christmas movie i watch this movie every year during the holidays and also merry Christmas.
Bro this is a crazy good video!!! Deep, yet simply put. I hope this goes viral because a lot of people need to hear this. Thank you for this!
Thank you for your kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I guess the Hobo acts like the embodiment of "Doubt" out of spite and resentment over Santa since he is literally a ghost bound to the Polar Express where his life was taken
Context: A deleted scene confirms that the Hobo or "King" was actually killed on the roof when he got swept away by the Flat Top Tunnel (They even hinted at how exactly he died on the North Pole when the runaway observation car enters the tunnel) That's why the Hobo was so determined to get Hero Boy to the safety of the cab. Even though he intentionally left the kid there to simmer on his doubts, I'd like to believe once he heard those 3 long burts of the whistle, the hobo immediately realized what was coming and did Not want the kid to meet the same fate he did.
Maybe the Hobo is the shadow side ( dark, cold, danger, cycical ) of the conductor ( light, warmth and comfort, safety).
I like it. They do look like they could be related. 😂
The Conductor was often pretty stern with the Protagonist, while the Hobo was also a bit of a mentor figure for him and seemed to actually care about him, so it goes both ways for both characters.
Thank you for the video sir. Excellent work. I never thought a silly movie such as this had such a great spiritual meaning.
Although I did already make the connection that the so called “ghost” on the train could have been called the “Christmas spirit” and or the “spirit” of Christmas.
Since they decided to throw ghosts into the story I am surprised they did not give the hobo that title. But no matter what you call him, he is my favorite part of the movie for sure. Without the hobo, ghost, spirit character I would have ZERO desire to watch this movie. It was this character that made me love the film.
One of the best christmas movies in history, but I never hated its mo-cap, for the time it was cool!
Wow, this really changed my perspective on this movie, and definitely for the better too!
I’m so glad to hear!
Fantastic analysis! You gained a sub
Personally I think that the “Hobo on the Roof” is some sort of (morally gray) spirit, maybe even a Christmas spirit. After all, he is connected in some way to the Polar Express itself.
I think he is a spirit in purgatory because of the fact that he won’t believe but that despite the small bad things he does, he will ultimately choose to do good when push comes to shove as we see with him saving the children. I think he is bound to the train because he needs to learn from the children going through the journey and some of them need him to show them the callousness that disbelief leads to.
Incredible analysis as usual.
Fun fact: in a deleted scene, there was actually a part where the engineer and fireman sing a song then tell a story about a kid (or man) who hitched a ride on top of the train without a ticket one year, and was subsequently killed when the train reached Flat top Tunnel.

That was an insightful explanation. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Although Santa is a Latin translation, Santa Claus is from the Dutch nickname sinter Klass, short for the Dutch name of Saint Nickolas
Thank you ❤

I like the movie until they get to the North Pole. Once they arrive then the movie becomes really weird and feels like a waste of time. I enjoy the journey. I like the train ride and the ghost is my favorite character along with the conductor.
It's "disturbing" because it's sidelong and unclear - that's fair. Nameless faith isn't faith. Jesus Christ DOES come to us - that is the point of Christmas!
This movie is bad. Don't be blinded by nostalgia. It's a bad movie. It's like if AI tried to write and star in its own Christmas movie.
That’s just plain mean. This film had a lot of care and effort behind it. Remember that the motion capture was done by real humans, regardless of how uncanny the characters may be. AI would be incapable of writing something as good as this film, especially since it was a book to begin with.
