    I needed this today. Yesterday I ran a 1hr 29 10K, came third from last, and was pipped to the finish by the winner of the half marathon that was happening at the same time. It’s easy to take away from that that I’m a terrible runner, and maybe I am, but I’m a runner, and that on its own is more than most.

    This video is more important than most will think. People see the influencers they follow warming up on bench press with 100kg as if that’s normal. Being able to bench 100kg puts you into the top 1% of the population in terms of strength. It’s not normal. But social media makes people think they’re weak if they can’t do it.

    • @ithinkthereforeitalk935
      @ithinkthereforeitalk935 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Well, if you regularly go to the gym for a couple of years and train there instead of watching TH-cam it's kinda normal and expected of you. Nothing crazy about benching this weight. Most people cannot do that cause they don't want to not because it's that hard.

      100% - I have just been on a holiday resort for while, mainly shall we say people of below average fitness. I was in the gym on the resort most days, usually empty, doing a decent workout and feeling "fit" - then one day I hit the gym at a busy time and the small % of the people staying at the resort who were quite fit all seemed to be in the gym that day, and all seemed to be stronger than me!

    Been working on pullups with my PT for a long while now. I can still remember the feeling of, having spent ages working on eccentrics, managing a single pullup. Next week I managed two and a few months later 3 sets of 5.

    In my 60th year on this planet I sometimes get depressed that I'll never be as fast cycling or running or bench press as much as I could when I was 30 but your channel cheers me up. I am at least a minute a mile slower running than when I was 50 and my 5k now is nearly 8 minutes slower than when I was 30. I am similarly way slower on a bike. I realise, as I think you do too , that you can't compete against your younger self...and you shouldn't... but compared to the rest of the world I think we are doing ok. My Garmin reckons I'm Excellent vo2 running and Superior vo2 still for cycling for my age. Many studies show great increase in life expectancy for keeping fit. You don't need to keep winning races. You just need to see your grandkids grow up. I had a MacD's 2 weeks ago for the first time in years and felt proper ill next day! I worry that our health system is gonna explode in a few years.

I've gone from being able to do maybe 3 last June, to doing close to 3 sets of 10 (10-10-8) after about 8 months. • @notjustforme
      @notjustforme 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Well, as there is no official definition of a pull-up, it's a valid question that, really, only experienced people can even know about. Things like kipping, swinging, raising knees, locking elbows... Everybody has a different definition of what constitutes a proper pull-up. For me, it would be: No kipping, pause at the top and bottom, straight arms to clavicle to the bar. I can't stand that stupid “chin-up” jerk many people do, trying to stretch their necks to make the finish.
      Anyhow, I'd say it makes sense asking about what the proper form required is supposed to be.

    • @Mowsemowse
      @Mowsemowse 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@notjustforme argh that stupid chin thing people do... And don't even get me started on kipping.
      I say this as a person who can only manage about 7 pull ups on a very good day. Using poor form to get better numbers is only cheating yourself.

    • @yewtewbstew547
      @yewtewbstew547 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@notjustforme It's also quite difficult to "learn" as an adult. Like if you're not strong enough to do a single pullup, then the only way to get there is to train a regression of the same movement pattern. And the average person has no idea what that even means. It's not rocket science, but you do need at least some resistance training experience to know that.
      Not to mention a lot of people just aren't willing to do that. They'll try a regular pull up, fail, and then just conclude that it's hopeless and give up. When it comes to fitness a lot of people out there, maybe even most, have an "all or nothing" attitude combined with very low physical capability. Almost like they're embarassed to be seen doing anything less than the most advanced training methods. And obviously the problem with that mindset is if you're not physically capable of achieving everything, which hardly anyone is otherwise we'd all be profession athletes, then you consign yourself to achieving nothing.

    During lockdown I got a pull-up bar with the goal of getting first pull up. My father in law, overweight with the beginnings of quite an impressive beer belly, in his mid 60’s at the time, wanted to try it. Been a taxi driver for a few years but laid cables for a living before that so was used to lifting heavy and drilling through roads. He does about 5 or so no problem. 😅 💪

    It's nice to see actually how tall you are. It's rare to see you stand next to other people.
    I'm only 6'4 and often don't realise how much taller I am than my friends unless I see our reflection in a window etc.

    I think this is why it’s near impossible to find an outdoor pullup bar in the US .

    I really like this video! I was getting upset that I wasn’t beating everyone at park run even though I’ve not been running consistently for years 😂 then comparing myself to all the running influencers 😂 It’s true. While not about being first, it’s just pack mentality to compare yourself to others, i.e. In nature you don’t want to come last because you would get picked off 😂

    I love the above average concept. Yesterday I took part in my first cycle hill climb event. I was second to last, but I got up and was still alive at the top (I had my eyes on the most distressed finisher prize but unfortunately I didn’t even get that). But I’ve been on a high ever since because I did it, even lots of my cycle friends wouldn’t do it and 2 years ago I was in a hospital bed being resuscitated by the crash team and for a long time couldn’t even walk across the park…that’s above average right?

    Pull ups are insanely easy but Ive found extremely hard to ever get exceptional at them in terms of reps but my form is pretty excellent dor like 15 reps. But I remember not being able to do one and that was like 5 years into working out. Then I just randomly decided I needed to focus on getting them. I think it was more of a technique issue because once I did one I was able to do like 8 or so pretty soon afterwards
