  • This week, South Korea broke its own world record for the lowest birth rate in the world.
230,000 babies were born there last year, in a country with a population over 50 million.
But declining birth rates isn’t exclusive to South Korea, with the trend affecting numerous countries across the world - including the UK.
The BBC's Analysis Editor Ros Atkins has been looking into this.

Let's not forget the other reason why birthrates are declining, especially in Japan, South Korea and China, and that is the demands that employers put on their workers. You can't work people to death and expect them to have the time and energy to meet, date, marry and procreate. Who would want to bring a child into that climate?

Most of my Japanese friends only have one or two kids, but they want more, the only issue is that their husbands come home exhausted and don’t want to have sex at all. My girlfriends, when we get together, will talk about that often. Makes my heart hurt for them, because they rarely see their husbands at all, but when they come home it’s straight to bed, then straight to work.

Inflation is also the biggest factor, the reason some people not wanting to have more children is simple, MONEY! When you don't have enough money to sustain child care and your kid's college, parents are more likely to have 1 kid and that's it, 2 or more is already a challenge. Education, clothes and food to put in their mouth are the primary challenges to fulfill via money but gets reduced due to inflation.

I am a foreigner working in China. Chinese law stipulates that the working hours are a max of 40 hours per week. Many people want to work more and many do. Employers can be fined for forcing workers to do more hours than their contracts state and all workers have to be paid double their hourly rate for any hours worked over the limit.

The Baby Boom was engineered: Step 1: Create jobs that 1 parent can work, that cover the expenses of the entire family, and only require a High School education. Step 2: Create cheap starter homes than even 22 yr olds on their first job can afford.
That is it, those 2 steps created the Baby Boomers.
Today, we are in University accumulating debt for 4 - 8 years. Then we are paying outrageous rent while trying to save up for a first home. Nobody builds unprofitable starter homes anymore, and the average home price is so high as to require an intergenerational mortgage to finance. No kidding nobody is having kids. By the time you can afford kids financially, you can't have kids biologically.

Israel has a few exceptional policies which make it easier to balance work/education and personal life. So it seems making it so growing a family is a smoother experience really does contribute to stable fertility.

And due to all the stress, difficulties and sufferings that child who will grow up to be an adult, will say to themselves: " why did my parents bring me into this world, filled with tragedy, calamities and so much turmoil!"
It's true that, one of the biggest reason why today's couples are deciding against bringing life into today's world, is how much suffering already is taking place. Even if it drops to 1 billion it has natural tendency to come back again to 1 billion. Even if the economy was better, things like climate change, natural disasters and man-made disasters make the future look very uncertain and influence people’s decision not to have children. The good news is that our Creator is about to drastically change the situation on earth. He has a government in heaven, God’s Kingdom, which Jesus preached about when he was on earth. (Luke 4:43) The Kingdom is going to completely remove not only all human governments but also all the selfish, greedy people who make others suffer. (Daniel 2:44; Proverbs 2:21, 22) The Kingdom will lovingly care for all its subjects. (Isaiah 65:21, 22) They will experience true peace and security for the first time. (Micah 4:4) Every day will be filled with joy and laughter. (Revelation 21:4) These wonderful changes are imminent!

That's the real problem. Population decline is only temporary before the population would stabilise.
But there are certain groups who are having too many children.

@@Patrick-y4d1z its really only africa and some of the middle east that have a very high birth rate. Most of Asia used to be like that but now they have a declining birthrate since theyve developed over the past few centuries. the same will happen with africa soon as its already very slowly decreasing over there

My children are 21 and 23, both female, and neither of them want children. I'm proud of them. Why would you want to bring another life into this world? When our governments can't agree that climate change is real and there might not be a planet worth living on, or that trying to keep you finances above water has become so difficult that you wouldn't want your child to have to struggle through life semi-poor.

If you’re not discussing work life balance, higher salaries or paid leave for new parents. You’re wasting your time talking about low birth rates.
