@KingofgraceSARA It's a metaphor, if people don't have the ability to afford a home for themselves, nor have the time or energy to take care of children due to long working hours and high costs of living, then why have children? Having more children in this economy is just setting them up for failure.

If there is nobody left, you will have no financialand mental problems. Also consequently, as you age the problem will get worse without a sustained population. No social benefits will be paid to you as you get older because there are no younger generations in the working pool to pay for your social benefits when you get older. So you will have to work for longer in life which will put a strain on your mental health. Also you will feel lonlier and you won't have people to take care of you when you get older. That is terrible for your mental health.

Excuse me? People way back years ago had it much more difficult than people have it today…..they were also much poorer. Even after the year 1900 South Koreans were still slaves….slaves to their own people…the upper class people….yet they still had children. Then there were wars their people fought in. But you somehow think that the current generation is facing financial and “mental” issues? The current generation is facing NOTHING compared to what past generations had to face and deal with. The ignorance of people these days is what’s astounding….the fact that you think this current generation is “suffering” more…when they don’t have to face any of the hardships past generations had to face is just pure ignorance. And just so you know….there are people living today who still live in huts made of mud and elephant dung….dirt floors…barely able to eat enough food to survive….struggling every day to live and they have to do actual hard labor to take care of themselves….they don’t have washing machines or ovens or refrigerators….they have to constantly work to stay alive….yet they are having more children. The only mental issue the current generation is suffering from is being self absorbed whiners who don’t know what real hardship is.

I have lived in Korea for over 7 years now. And married a Korean national and last year I had a miscarriage on the first day of the semester, and had to unfortunately tell my work so I could go to the hospital. I was taken out of my homeroom teacher position because they said they couldn't have a pregnant lady as a homeroom teacher. They where nice about it but also told me they where a little mad at me for not telling them sooner. I was only 7 weeks along and hadn't even told my family. I needed surgery and needed more time off. I got a different position and it was all good. But then wanted to know consistently when I was trying again. Then told me on Friday that I wasn't a reliable employee because I could get pregnant again and might have morning sickness and they where dropping my pay. And they wonder why they have a low birth rate.

This isn’t practical, nor is it actually a solution. There’s no correlation honestly, even really well off people are having less and less kids. There are countries that pour so much money into trying to get their populations to have kids and the birth rate hasn’t budged, while poor unhappy African countries have high birth rates. It’s a very complicated issue. I don’t know all the answers but I believe banning pornography, contraception and abortion could probably get it to at least above replacement, but that isn’t practical either.

I taught English in South Korea 19 years ago, and this issue was equally prevalent at that time as well. Economics plays a significant role in this, particularly the country's rapid transition from a third to a first-world nation within a short span of time. According to my Korean friends, the culture and the people were unable to keep pace with the rapid growth of the economy. Similar to the situation in America, the wealth gap is just as substantial for them. I recall my university students expressing their concerns about finding employment after graduation. South Korea has a high unemployment rate among young individuals. Additionally, the housing market is extremely unreasonable. Ultimately, subsequent generations after the baby boomers and Generation X find it financially unfeasible to have children.

    • @michaelashby9654

To be clear, Korea was historically always a significant player in the region. Its always been known in asia for its fine ceramics, metal work, and craftsmanship. (Also "first world" is a term developed after WW2 to mean essentially the West, US and UK allied nations, second world was the USSR and allied nations, and third world was unaligned nations. So technically, South Korea was always "first world". Its confusing because these terms have been redefined and are now sort of meaningless. )

@@michaelashby9654 During our discussions, my Korean friends often referred to their country as a third world nation, particularly due to the aftermath of the Korean war and the extensive devastation it caused. When I mentioned Korea's economics plays a significant role, I wasn't referring to its reputation for fine ceramics, metal work, and craftsmanship. Instead, I was alluding to the country's condition after the Korean war and the economic boom in the 1980s that propelled its economy to such a degree that the people struggled to keep up. This boom had a profound impact on the current generation, leading to a housing crisis and high unemployment rates. Numerous studies and documentaries have been conducted on this matter, and my former university students can attest to it. During my visit to South Korea in October 2023, all of my friends confirmed the information presented in this video and even provided additional insights.

Then why are poorer countries and poorer communities having more babies? The fact that women are focusing more on having a “career” is more likely the cause. They prevent themselves from having children because they want that “career” life that the feminist movement pushed on women….making them feel like they were lesser of a person if they stayed at home and had a family. Now days those “career” women think having a fancy apartment and expensive handbags and designer clothes should be the “goal” so they certainly aren’t going to think twice about having a family. In the end…if the population falls…so does the country. Having babies is the most important job…because it keeps the country going. Lesser population means you can be taken over easier and it means your people won’t survive long into the future….they are self genociding themselves by not focusing on having children….who then have more children….and more children…carrying on generation after generation. Ohhh…but those feminists don’t want that…and now as we speak there are many branches of families in many different countries that are ending/dying off with no offspring to carry on. Just imagine your family line ending…it’s really sad to think about. My sister didn’t have children…she was too focused on her “career”. Now she’s in her 50s and can’t have children and her “career” of 30 years just fired her because they fired all the long term employees to hire younger people at lower wages….and no there’s nothing legally she can do because in her state an employer can fire anyone for any reason they want….and now because she’s in her 50s no one wants to hire a new employee who’s in their 50s…they want to hire younger employees….so she’s stuck with a house she can’t pay for any longer and no children….and for what?

To give children to the country? After I am dead they can all sink. Freedom is the most precious asset and your sister understood it better than you. Economic difficulties can happen, but the freedom to be the owner of her own home, to do what she wants when she comes home from work, to choose every single object that enters the house by herself and to date the men she likes, she had it and you did not. Young adults (20-30 yrs old) on the street in SK, were interviewed and asked, "Do you want children, and if not, why?" Their answers surprised me. 65% were not in a serious relationship, nor had they ever dated, not even in high school, they were busy studying. They said,
"I want to focus on my career,
I don't want to get married or have children. I don't want the responsibility." Today they go out with a group of friends.

I have lived in Korea for 1 year now and what I hear constantly from people is that they have no money and can't afford kids anymore. But at the same time, they say they can't afford kids because they have to pay for multiple academies, also they need all the new trending clothing, bags, and have to spend hundreds of dollars to go out all the time or even on dates. I have even been seeing people with strollers in my area that cost a few thousand US dollars and a lot of those strollers have dogs instead of children. 🤣 People say they can't afford children but will spend more than they can afford on their pets.
My husband (who is Korean) was worried about not having as much money as other people, even with some money left over we have every month to eat out once or twice or buy something small we want. He said people here want to earn twice as much or 3 times as much as their current earnings so they can go out, drink, buy the newest Iphone, the newest trending fashion or visit the newest trending restaurant/cafe, etc. Half of the people here doing these things every day are maxing out credit cards to do so, just to seem like they have money and to look better in everybody else's eyes. Image is everything here.

Some countries’ cultures just aren’t conducive to creating and maintaining a solid family structure in today’s economy. For example, here in Japan, the percentage of elderly people living and working past age 65 has increased year by year because their pensions from the government are not sufficient for the cost of living. Moreover, not enough young adults are remaining in certain cities to work, thus leaving the elderly behind to work those jobs to keep those cities from completely collapsing economically. There are many public schools, particularly elementary schools, that are literally closing because they are unable to stabilize their student populations. With AI taking over many jobs and many basic educational standards declining compared to previous generations, certain industries could indeed suffer in the long-run. Some countries are giving government incentives for people to have children, but they are not great enough. Moreover, the augmentation of online communication and media has altered how people form and sustain human relationships and people’s views on gender.

A lot of things in Korea are changing. One thing is that Seoul is no longer seen as being that desirable. Fewer people want to live there and many people from or living in Seoul want to leave. It's not that Korea is actually that expensive -- it's really not. The problem is the work culture, materialism and Korea's collective psychosis. People working in Korean companies rarely have much of a life. Men are burnt out and exhausted. Women, if they become mothers, are pressured to leave the work force and give up their own chances.

@@kristinesharp6286 No, it really doesn't. Seoul can be great for young, single people -- even young couples. There are a lot of economic opportunities, there are a lot of social opportunities, etc. It's not good for families as you rightly noted. In both Japan and Korea, the tradition of group think and tightly-knit work units has become a major impediment to achieving meaningful reforms. The culture of "paying your dues", of having to go out drinking with your colleagues after work, etc. makes it very, very hard to work remotely. More are doing it now, but doing so also limits one's economic opportunities. Likewise, social pressure to rise to the top makes it harder to justify living in provincial cities even if the quality of life is better.

@@kristinesharp6286 Japan has not, on average, been an especially fecund country. It has, historically, had between 20-25pc fewer children than similar countries in Europe and about a third less than in Korea and China. There was pressure put on families to have more children during the Meiji, Taisho and early Showa eras in order to be able to settle colonised lands. Much like Germany, Japan's birthrates plummeted starting in the 1960s.
Korea's situation is a bit different. Korea did have a tradition of having large families. Even my generation (Gen-Y) grew up with an average of 3-4 children per family. In Japan, there were on average 2, very rarely a third. That is why, even a decade or two ago, Korea was a young country.
Incheon is in the Seoul metropolitan area. The main airport for Seoul is there. Based on your comments, I have to assume you're American. I'm not sure what the situation in New York is as I spent one day there donkey's years ago and have never had the inclination to return. The US is, in any case, an irrelevant point of comparison. To a large extent, so is Japan.
South Korea has many of the same problems that countries with primate cities do. That is, economic activity is concentrated in a single urban centre. A better comparison would be Denmark, Finland, Portugal or even New Zealand. Yes, there are other places in South Korean than Seoul. The problem is that economic opportunities are relatively limited. If you live in Portugal, there is intense pressure to move to Lisbon if you wish to succeed because that's where the jobs are. If you live Denmark, there isn't really all that much outside of Copenhagen. Likewise, those who wish to move up in their careers in Finland have to move to Helsinki. South Korea is utterly dominated by Seoul. There are many people who live in neighbouring Gyeonggi-do and commute to Seoul.
In contrast, there are countries like Sweden, Germany and Australia that are more decentralised. There are a wide variety of industries, companies and services outside of the capital or largest urban area. Japan, too, is more decentralised with there being several major urban cores that can support diverse economic opportunities. That's not to say that people can't have a decent quality of life outside of Seoul -- they most certainly can. It's just that they have to accept that by living in places like Ulsan, Busan, Gwangju they severely limit their job opportunities. In a country that values success, progress and rising to the top as much as South Korea, that is seen by many as a failure.

My husband used to drive to work nearby and managed to find a tech job an hour and half away from a major city and now can work for most any company and is remote. It doesn’t matter what company he worked for. What matters is can he program, what kinds of software he has worked on, basic work skills and having a degree. He went to a state university and not Harvard. Thank God. He delayed employment besides college being in military for a short enlistment but more than Korean mandatory military service terms and that was an asset to his resume. He was not behind because of the service years. I have two degrees. But now stay home. Most in grad school were nearing retirement or changing careers in their 30’s/40’s. I was one of the few getting the degree right after undergrad. Some took a break to raise kids and were getting qualified to do something else. When I was hired at the last job the same day same in the same department starting was someone who took off to have kids many years. I was 28. She was late 40’s. Not a problem. Why is Korea making it so complicated? Worse than the birth rate is the numbers studying abroad. They will work abroad. Students are sent abroad now while minors. It’s not just for college. Japan’s population had been enormous for a place with constant natural disasters, constant military campaigns and constant desire to add to the current border. And the entire male line thing.

What we have today is a deep divide between people who live in "world cities" and everyone else. A growing percentage of the people in cities like Seoul, Tokyo, New York, London have NO connection to the country they live in. They are a deracinated people with a global culture detached from any culture (except that it actually closely matches a secular Catholicism) . To these people in the world cities, they may never meet or talk to a rural native. The concerns, norms, and culture of these world cities is the same uniform globalist ideology and it is completely disconnected from the culture, tradition and ancestry of rural population.
To these people in the world city, they see "number go down" and panic. They see the world purely in materialistic terms and therefore need "number go up". They have no attachment to the land, culture, traditions, ancestry, or people. What I see in President Yoon is this world city mentality. He has no children. He loves to visit other world cities and be part of the clubs and organizations of the world city.
To these leaders, if his friends in the WEF and World Bank tell him "number must go up" he will agree "number must go up". And because the world city people have no connection to culture, people, ancestry, and because they have a purely materialistic view they are likely to open the borders and flood Korea with numbers. That is what DC elite are doing to the US right now. And its what London's elite is doing to the UK, and Brussel's elite to Europe.
And the job of media , which serves the elite in the world cities is to tell the public loudly and on repeatedly "number go down is bad, make number go up good". And if you point out that this will destroy your culture, they will call you names.

thats an interesting take on the ‘world cities’ thing. Only problem is that these countries have no one but themselves to blame. For the uk specifically, underdeveloping the rest of the world through colonialism was done specifically to bolster the colonial core, creating these unnatural ‘world cities’ through the overconsumption and wealth theft of capitalism. London shouldnt be so big. 10 million people all being served by one area is insane, and very new in human history. But thats what colonialism got you: extreme wealth and development through theft from the colonies. Now you have these ‘world cities’ that are just too big and too important and too detached from the country’s heritage as a whole because of just how many (different) people flock to them, chasing that stolen wealth. Frankly, europe/the west deserves this. Not sure about s.korea, but europe/the west wouldnt be suffering this ‘world city’ crisis if they’d left everyone else alone. This is what obscene and unnatural theft gets you; wealth so large that it begins to eat your entire nation whole.
Also, colonial ties are still strong and europe/the west continues to underdevelop and steal from the global south till this day. Capitalism is a monster that none of you know how to truly control. Theres no way to kick immigrants out of your countries without also keeping your grimy hands out of the global south’s pockets. There’s no way to maintain your obscene wealth without opening your doors to third worlders. There’s no way for you to keep being the ‘shining lights’ of humanity without starting wars in the middle east or destabilisng african/south american governments. Your system of profit through capitalism only works by disadvantaging millions across the globe, and you don’t get to keep your cushy havens of stolen wealth after the destruction youve wreaked on the rest of the world. And lets not even get started on how your desire to ‘civilise’ the colonies is quite literally why the earth’s environment is collapsing today.
All I can do is laugh.

I now live and work in Germany, where the birthrate is also falling, and Grundschulen (primary schools) have also faced closure, but can remain open if enough migrant children are in the area. It's a serious concern here in a country where the workforce is ageing and Germans are having fewer kids for the same reasons that I would guess South Koreans are having fewer kids. It is too expensive. There is a serious concern about the economy collapsing. There is a world war just around the corner. And... the entire concept of Familienstruktur has drastically shifted.

This allows the preys numbers to increase since there are less predators. Once SK population really starts to decline by a lot you will have people earning way more money because they will be more valuable as there are less people. Some missing but important context: In Korea, each neighborhood has its own elementary school. There are elementary schools every other block in a city like Daejeon. And in a city like Seoul which is becoming a "world city" detached from Korean culture, you have a lot of foreign workers and young office workers who have no children yet because they are in Seoul to start their career and will move out later. So the demographics are tilted in Seoul in a way you don't see in other Korean cities. (Its more extreme in Seoul. I'm not saying its absolutely different.) The number of schools in Korea is really high. There has been talk for several years that there are too many colleges and not enough trade schools. So this problem of over production of colleges is another issue. There is a rebalancing that needs to happen. Korea moves fast and that is for good or bad.
As for the low birthrate, Korea is currently very densely populated and its NOT part of Korean tradition to have this high a population. The current population of South Korea is far above their historic population levels. This fact is never mentioned.
South Koreas population in the 1950s was 20 million. Its now at 51 million. As Korea was rebuilding in the 1950s, this high population may have made sense. There was lots of manual labor jobs. But Korea today is moving back to a more traditional mix of high skilled labor, academics, farmers, and manual laborers. To me, from reading about Korea history ("The Dynamics of Confucianism and Modernization in Korean History" by Yi Tae-Jin is highly recommended) and from talking to my Korean father in law, Korea traditionally is a mixed economy. The last few decades of rebuilding after the Korean War were an anomaly. Further, technology makes most manual labor unnecessary. So a rebalance is needed.
And the way Koreans live in high density apartments built on agricultural lands is not sustainable with further growth. Korea is now building apartments in lands that used to be prime agricultural land. These lands could go back to nature rather than concrete. Gangnam, the famous district in Seoul, was a field in the 1960s. There is a huge Buddhist temple there because it was historically rural.
Part of this discussion needs to include if growth forever is "the good"? Do you want all of South Korea's fields to be covered in concrete?
Or is South Korea just looking around and saying "we have technology to replace manual labor, we don't need so many people, we like to have nature around us."

    • @KBowWow75
      @KBowWow75 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

The entire world population tripled in like a decade or two in the 20th century. You are looking at population total as a whole historically which is a dangerous way to look at the data. The issue is replacement rate which is at its worst in history. If you do tge math, for every 100 South Koreans, there will be only 4 great-grand children produced at the current replacement rate. So in 3 generations of families from now, there will be a 96% extinction rate. Current child bearing generation is Millenials, followed by Gen Z, then Generation Alpha to come.
(Young Millenials will give birth to generation Alpha, hence the 3 generations of family lineage and not 3 successive generations)
With the development of AI that will be used in the workplace to replace labor as it is required due to population decline, it will get worse. Korea is already a leader in AI.
The two Koreas are at opposite ends of the spectrum. One is decades behind, and one is plowing the way into the future. Both ends of the spectrum are bad for sustaining populations. One will stagnate and the other will put the desire for career and future over raising families.

You're looking at the current data in the current time. You need to look info on FUTURE time bcs current couples nowadays prefer to no kids while being married due to financial and economical issues in that country. Not only that, suicide rates are also very high, SoKor is currently the highest suicide rate in the world. It's all abt pressure, nothing's nice abt them, it's the opposite of what kdramas showed us, it's a joke.
This issue has been a problem among kpop companies bcs they're currently facing to find kids 2010 and after, they're that desperate bcs the kids aren't that many they can scout into their companies. Who knows, next thing we know is that there'll be less idols debuting in 20 years from now.
