DYNO | Ducati Panigale V4

  • It was pissing down when we collected the Ducati Panigale V4S, so hotfooted it straight to JHS Racing and stuck it on the dyno. Direct comparison with Aprilia RSV4 included. Ducati claim 215bhp at the crank. What does this mean at the rear wheel?
    NOTE: we followed the Ducati factory's instructions and dyno'd with the tank off.

    why would the fuel tank need to be removed?!?

    • @FortyFourTeeth
      @FortyFourTeeth  6 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      By shifting the fuel tank further back under the seat, the battery and ECU (and everything else) sits at the front where the fuel normally is. With the V4, there's no way of simply lifting the front of the tank to get a dyno connection like you can with conventional bikes. Small price to pay for exquisite performance

    One thing I've noticed watching a variety of dyno runs is that the room for error is massive. The difference between some machines, locations etc.. have huge impact. A properly run in bike, with warm tires and plenty, cold intake air would probably be closer to what MCN ran it in at. This comment section is 40% Ducati fanboys being blown away and 40% Ducati haters finding every nitpicking reason to hate it. If you don't like the bike, don't buy it, if you think it's overpriced, don't buy it. What Ducati has objectively managed to do here is make a very powerful v4, with a wet weight of approximately 15kg less than a lot of it's 4 cylinder competitors and (if we listen to early track reviews) vastly superior handling than it's 2 cylinder predecessor. The thing is you can't go wrong buying a flagship sports bike in 2018, they're all brilliant. So stop bashing everyone's opinions just because they don't match yours. Everyone has their own motivations for buying a specific bike, so be happy for them that they did, instead of filling each comment section with unjust cynicism.

      Exactly. Infact I am cutting and pasting a comment I made on the Ducati form I belong to here.
      I for one, am glad to see 44teeth bring people back down to reality about the V4. This was an honest dyno run with real talk and not a bunch of hype. Just strap it up and go right to the chart. Should people be disappointed in the numbers? Hell no! This bike is in its first year with load of potential. And everyone remember. The true use of a dyno is to help tune a bike. The V4 could make 188HP but after tuning it may make 202HP. My point being that dynos have way to many variables to be the judge of how much HP a single bikes in comparison to other bikes. To make proper comparisons you need to use the same dyno on the same day with a room that temp and humid are controlled very tightly and to insure parity..

    When will see someone explain the dyno procedure? Is it max rev in each gear, is it the run down that's measured? What was john doing with the remote box?

    • @ZX6R2KGT
      @ZX6R2KGT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You start down low in the RPM of whatever gear you deem best and record all the way til redline. Usually it's the gear closest to a 1:1 ratio but I've seen this bike dyno'd in 4th and here in 6th. The remote in his hand is just a way to start/stop the recording process. The bike is obviously building power as you run up through the rev so that is what is recorded, not the run down.
      Sometimes you'll see them quick shift around and accelerate/decelerate and even run out each gear. That's mostly just to get some heat in the tire so it is less likely to slip if you're not sitting on it or have it strapped down tight enough. Everyone has their own procedures but the general idea is the same. Find the gear, record the run, tune a/f accordingly and repeat.

    Great video thanks for all the information. I think it would have been nice to know how the 1299 and S1000RR compared on this particular dyno as well to really get an idea of how much more power it makes over the other liter bikes. Still a bit disappointing in my opinion considering it’s got an extra 103 cc. It does save 20 to 30 lbs of weight over the Aprilia so that’s a plus at least. Haha

    • @paulklees9871
      @paulklees9871 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jaret Campisi you have anderstand why Ducati Build a 1100ccm?This 103 ccm more as you can see on the Curve compair with a RSV4 is in every RPM better on Ducati.103ccm more are not only gonna use for the Top End Power reather for a good Power in every rpm.and for shure each 15000km Service is not Bad for a Bike with this Power.the V4 1100ccm are Build for 80%of Rider wich using that Bike on Street and eaven Trackdays and on Street you dont wont to bee all Time over 8000rpm to feel the Power.In my Opinion Ducati has Make a good step,for most of People a 1103ccm and for absolutlley Crazy Guys wich has somme Skills a V4 R this Bike will be presenting this Year.The v4r has 1000 ccm but the same Power on the Top End like the 1103ccm maybe more but eaven more RPM and in the Midrange less Power than the 1103ccm.Dont wory this is only the begining of this what thatEngine can put out on Power.Dont forget Ducati still the World Record holder of the most Powerfull v2 Engine and bigest Pistons ever made for a Street Bike .And i think nobody try to overpased that because Ducati push the v2 on the Limit.And The Desmosedici GP wich is similar with the V4 Engine is the most Powerfull Engine in the GP😎

      aw c'mon Jared, you yourself said in your statement "been nice to know how the 1299 and S1000RR compared on this particular dyno" - I'll add, on this particular day, back-to-back-to-back, is truly the only comparison. Can't be disappointed until an apples-to-apples is done. Just because the RSV4 did 181, say Dec 12, 2017, doesn't mean that this bike wouldn't have made (hypothetically), 195+ HP. But you get the point.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very interesting to see the graph, similar curve to the Aprilia RSV4 but the extra 100CC makes the 3% to 4% (roughly) extra power (RSV4 about 182 on most Dyno), but as Fagan says its not just the power figure, forget its 'cheating' and has 10% more CC - the bikes electronics, light weight, super sharp handling make it so much more, I am not a Ducati fan I actually own an RSV4 (I have had 3 of them) but the Ducati V4 achieves immense drive and turns so easily it is something else, I really dont think they needed to add the extra 100CC - really isn't 1000CC fast enough for all of us, but they were hardly going to release a bike with same or less power than the competition - either way it is one hell of a bike, I want one !

      2017 Blade SP/SP2 was Lion and i believe the both the 2014 and 2017 Ducati SL's were fitted with Lion. none of these models being cheap of course.

      I’m sure the 2017 Gsx-R 1000 has a Lithium Battery too tbh... But as BJ and James have worked on that bike a lot I could be wrong. There appears to be one in mine as standard though?

    So am I correct that the 2008 Desmosedici made 200 hp at the crank and 10 years later with an extra 103 cc this one only makes 214. So a ten year old motorcycle makes more hp per cc than the new bike.

    The 188 is more realistic than the 198 claimed by MCN. Too bad they didn't make this bike a little more friendly to work on. But at the end of the day still a very powerful bike. 3 hp up on the 1299 but heavier and way down in torque. The improvements are in its flat engine power delivery

      That is such a good video for how dyno's work. Also would have been good knowing how many miles the bike had done.
      Would be quite cool if a bike dealer would publish a weekly (or monthly) dyno figures for a demo bike as its running in to see how (or even if) that makes a difference...
      back to the bike... i'm currently trying to sell my liver to raise money for this bike, it has one careful owner and is already semi pickled...

      MPI1000 Dyno v Dyno can always have a fair bit of difference good to know. But the numbers they are seeing is a lot less then what everyone else is seeing. Everyone else is the 198 - 202 range that I have seen.

      Donovan Lewis yes MCN testing 198.2 for RSV 4 192 and the s1000 rr 191 but on the End is Ducati puts more Power of all on every Dyno on the End hir is a Number of close 189 HP.On a Dyno a new zxr 10 only 171 HP??One Qustion is for me why Dynos giving this various Number?

    guys, compared to most Ducatis of old, you must remember the engine has now been rolled back SIGNIFICANTLY in the chassis (even relative to the Panigale). before this point, the plug wire on the front cylinder was likely the easier of the two to access, but now the front cylinder is wedged up between the frame rails almost like an I4, so those days are over. 44T's doing it right, the others...? not so much.

      Your educated in Ducati the air box was open you don't think the air fuel is off

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aztec Warrior6969 if the tank seals the air box, it's pulling air from the box periphery. Shouldn't be a problem unless the dyno fans are creating a pressure drop across the fuel tank underside.

    I beg to differ about the ease of working on that bike as opposed to the Aprilia I have found at the Aprilia is very easy to work on. The weight of the Aprilia is quite comprable and one thing I would take a look at is how much does each bike cost I believe the Ducati is almost $10,000 more.
    Also take a look at the warranty costs of each bike Aprilia has very low warranty rates it is often referred to as the Honda of Italian motorbikes
