- Kane is one of WWE's greatest gimmicks. The Kane character debuted at WWF Badd Blood in 1997 when he interfered in The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels Hell in a Cell match. In this wrestling documentary we are looking at the true story behind Kane, and how he became an icon in the wrestling industry. Glenn Jacobs had a string of failed gimmicks behind him, including Isaac Yankem DDS and the fake version of Diesel. Glenn Jacobs believed his career was at a dead end, but Kane would turn him in to a legend in WWE and pro wrestling.

Unmasking Kane was one of WWE's biggest mistakes next to ending Undertaker's streak.
I believe it was Glen Jacob's idea to do the unmasking. The same reason for why undertaker took the American Badass turn. They both got bored of their character and wanted to expand.
When the unmasking happened, my Dad and I couldn't stop laughing. My Dad said "well no wonder he is so grumpy, he's had shit smeared on his face this whole time" and when he showed up again "huh, you'd think after he got someone to wipe the shit off his face he would be the happiest man alive". From that moment forward, Kane earned the nickname "shitface" in my home and it's always the first thing that comes to mind when I see him.
A part-timer with no love for the business who's only in it for the money didn't deserve to end The Streak
idk about that. It added layers to Kane's character which was needed at the time. Wasn't executed well, tho. Should have happened in a different way.
If Undertaker streak would have endet IT with a Draw, i could expect IT more
*Kane was truly a big part of the attitude era! His debut is the best debut in the history of the company! It was teased so well. The build up matched the pay off!*
unfortunately the character was just that... a good pop due to very well done selling and build up... after the initial awe it brought, the character devolved more and more over time. Legendary idea executed to near perfection but maintained very poorly.
Not saying Kane devolved over time, he actually got better and better... just the gimmick kinda fell off and derailed while Jacobs was getting better and never found the tracks again no matter how much they tried to get him back. Times just changed from a mask riddled gimmick era to a "I got big muscles adore me" era
Kane and Jericho for me hands down!!!! The build ups for weeks on top of the flawless executions. A+
@thanatos6902 *Big muscle era sure but Kane was actually the strongest man on the roster and that's coming from guys like Brock, Mark Henry, and Show! Kane pulled his own weight, and honestly his unmasking was a fresh start to his character. It opened another dimension, and he became more unhinged and scary, in my opinion. Remember he chose to unmask Vince was for it, but Glenn came up with the idea himself. I followed Glenn throughout his Kane gimmick, it's really cool to see him keep that gimmick alive for 20+ years*
@@sinisterspawn might've been one of the strongest and carried his weight throughout the different eras but like I said his character just devolved into jobbing others by giving them a big man to beat up on and showcasing others saying "When have you ever seen someone man handle Kane like this, this is unbelievable"... went from the devil's favorite demon impervious to pain to scaring a few guys with his big boom entrance and laying on his back 30 seconds later... best work from Kane was his work with Undertaker though I absolutely loved Kane even through his devolving character
I never liked gimmicks, just athletic skill and physical prowess
Kane's original entrance was just amazing. The organ, the flames, the wailing guitar. They knocked it out of the park.
The Kane/Paul Bearer and Undertaker story line is legitimately the best work story line in wrestling history. The layers of the story line had me scared for Taker when I was a kid. 😂 What writing by the WWF team at the time.
I think that is only true from a kid's perspective. I was already an adult in 1997 and I just the whole thing was silly and stupid.
Cocaine man
@@mikehunt4986 You get too serious about it, the storyline it's just like a script movie, just entertainment.
@@hassanal-mustapha1321 Yes, a stupid script for a stupid movie, stupid entertainment. I prefer interesting storylines, like Bret Hart turning heel because he was tired of getting screwed all the time. That was good. Sorry if I take things too seriously. I'm an adult and I can think. I can't help myself.
@@mikehunt4986 Yeah I got it sir,
I named my son Kane…that’s how much I loved the gimmick as a kid…My wife was not happy when she found out two years later why I wanted that name.
as good a reason to name your kid as any...
ur son got the coolest name
It's based on the biblical Kane, im sure she'll love that
@@dr.darkroom that was the line I used on her… She only found out the truth when we visited my parents one day and she saw I had a Kane shirt in my old dresser.
Lol why would she be ok naming your son after the first murder???
2001 Kane was physically the most intimidating presence of all time
Kane was absolutely pure, awe-inspiring, unadulterated badassery. It was like a slasher monster meets fire demon meets a big tough bastard, with some of the sickest aesthetics in wrestling.
Glen Jacobs was really in the right place at the right time. He was even a large, built man. It was perfect timing for him.
It was also an amazing character. I remember watching WWF at the time and being genuinely afraid of him. I was 7 at the time, lol.
I remember when Kane teamed up with X-Pac. I thought it was such a cool entrance with how they mixed both of their music themes up. That was a really fun time to watch wrestling. Good childhood memories.
I forgot about that. Too bad Sean was into drugs, I loved his character. This was a great tag team and could’ve been one of the best.
At that time Kane and Xpac were my two favourite wrestlers, so when they teamed up I was so happy.
Kane's debut in WWE was nothing short of legendary! The way he burst onto the scene, ripping that cell door with his bare hands and coming face to face with The Undertaker sent chills down my spine. It was a moment of pure awe and amazement. And then, to top it all off, he delivered a devastating tombstone piledriver to The Undertaker, marking the beginning of one of wrestling's most iconic rivalries. Kane's impact on the wrestling world is undeniable, and that debut will forever be etched in the annals of wrestling history as one of the most memorable and spine-tingling moments ever. 🤟🔥
Unmasking Kane was the worst mistake ever
It had to be done as he was already being human like and talking jwitht the mask on as he was becoming silly.. the unmasking made him back sinister for a while... remember it had to kinda go along with undertaker going Biker which I didn't like
@@blocc316all they had to do was take him out for a while and for him to return as a monster again, potentially with a modified version of the old mask that allowed better breathing but not as revealing as it was when unmasked.
Doesn't work really by the time the year 2003 came around the masked gimmick had ran it's course.
Not really how they booked him was bad.
Yo bro exactly 💯💯💯💯💯💯 at leat he should of never shaved off of long hair dude that was gay
One of the greatest WWE characters ever put on screen.
During the attitude era yes, after he took the mask of he was basically just a jobber
@@blinkin78not really, more like upper mid card to mid card
@@bpnk5237 he had a few good matches, but was never really a serial title challenger like undertaker was in those years
The reality is that Kane was used as a jobber for 90% of his career
Amen to that.
If you were a kid in the '90s that loved watching horror movies like Halloween, Kane felt tailor made for you.
The neighbor kid literally had nightmares about Kane. We had an unlocked cable box that gave us all the ppv channels so people would come over all the time. Little Mikey didn't come over to watch WWF for a while 😅
Texas chainsaw massacre Halloween Friday the 13th type of psycho I miss the good old day back when kane had the long curly hair
Great video . Kane is undoubtedly one of the best WWE creations .
Thank you Jim Cornette for putting his heart and soul into creating this character.
TH-cam Kane training sitting up.
oohh good memories, when me and my dad watched together screamed together, kane is the character that we both like the most. My dad always gets hysterical when Kane shows up to fights. No matter how angry my father used to be he always asked me to watch TV when there was a WWF match, even when I was punished or scolded he always called me when Kane appeared, really good memories
Bro.. watching kane's debut even now on this video gave me goosebumps.. imagine the people who watched it in the arena.
If they had to end the streak Kane should have been one to do it, not only was he due for a great Wrestlemania match to book end his career but he debuted as The Undertaker's equalizer if anyone knew how to beat him, it would be his own Brother and i dont think thats a decision many people would take issue with since its fitting. I think what really hurt his character was going maskless for 9 years, his monster mystique and aura just dissappeared. the whole serial killer gimmick he did for way too long got uninteresting really fast, I know he just wanted to do something different but I feel like it kept him out of the spotlight, what made him a draw and a sight to behold was his mask
One of the most beloved characters in the world of wrestling. Thank you Kane
Since his debut...kane to me was like a second undertaker.....it was like heaven 😌😈
Kane is what got me into the franchise. He just looked so iconic and fuckin scary when I was a kid it really made me wanna watch every match
Kane will always be my favorite wrestler. Watching him tear through almost the entire roster in the 2001 Royal Rumble is one of my fondest memories from that part of my childhood. The chain match between him and Triple H was also very memorable. I think my favorite era was the Brothers of Destruction when he teamed up with the Undertaker, especially during the Invasion storyline.
The characters of Kane and the Undertaker cant be replaced and will always be remembered as two of the greatest of all time♥️👍
The only ones that hold a flame to them are the hardy boys, dudley boys, or stone cold. (Those were my personal favorites)
I remember the first time kane debuted in 1997, that ppv was amazing..love this channel..👌💞
I grew up 30 miles from him growing up he's a man off the ppl nobody deserves greatness more than him ...I knew of him wrestling in my town an he was a good dude then an he never let fame go to his head make the Missouri folks proud good job glen mayor of knoxville
I remember watching the debut of Kane as a kid. It was so well done! Taker was so dominate and then this incredible story starts to unfold. Slowly Taker is starting to unravel and you know something is coming that is a force to be reckoned with. Then this giant man appears like he's from some kind of horror movie. He is a believable antagonist for Taker. As a fan he became an instant favorite and I still love both characters. That era of wrestling was so incredible.
Fukin WWE never accepted this in their lists but Kane is fukin damn best debut ever in the history of wrestling. Perfect story, perfect background, perfect build up and a spine chilling entrance.
Kane is Undoubtedly the Greatest Debuting Wrestler (Gimmick) in the History of Professional Wrestling ….. 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Second is chainsaw Charlie. Anyone who comes out of a box is immediately over
What about the Undertaker?
@@mikehunt4986 They are Literally Neck & Neck as far As Gimmicks and Longevity but the Debut of Kane is Second to NONE
Big Van Vader debut in Japan was the greatest.
I say it's 2nd to undertaker debut Nov.22 1990 the look on the fans faces
Kane is one of my all time favorite WWE superstars..a pure GOAT of WWE..but one thing which I feel bad about him that he was only booked well when he was in fued or a team with Undertaker..otherwise he was booked like a mid-carder...he was never booked same way as The Undertaker
2003 heel Kane is underrated 🔥🔥🔥
my favorite honestly
Only if he keep the long hair I would agree but even then 1997 kane was the best kane
As a kid i 'believed' that they were brothers...
The right place at the right time with an amazing storyline. People can agree or disagree with his whole career but the Kane character is without doubt one of the best there has ever been (especially his debut).
Well Glen Jacobs had two strikes before this, but the third pitch, he hit the homerun out of the park.
Amazing how it all fell into place.
Agree until he took off the mask and shaved his head bald after he purposely shaved half of it off before unmasking
Everything around this character makes him more legendary. So inspiring, one of the greatest career of all time. Top 5 greatest gimmicks in history. Just respect for Gleen Jacobs, his path is literraly a lesson of life.
Kane's unstoppable supernatural gimmick was awesome.
Best story during that era, the buid up was so immense and thankfully the final output did not disappoint
Pail Bearer telling the story of the fire in the funeral home was worthy of an Oscar. He deserves the credit for getting this entire storyline setup.
Loved the Kane story. Was the reason I started watching wwf back in the day
The Undertaker & Kane were two of my most favorite wrestlers of all time! Awesome characters.
Now that - Kane's setup story, is a masterpiece. How many other characters have been given such a setup/buildup?!
To this day I remember the fearful excitement i would feel as a kid when Kane and Undertaker came out. They were so well written and played
The whole time till Kane’s retirement and his last feud with Roman Reigns i kept hoping if wwe will let him run once again As his first iconic version leading to his retirement later on. The way wwe kept diluting his character to push new stars just broke my heart.
It's gotta be Kane!!
Kane’s introduction and the story still one of the best stories in the history of wwf/wwe at least in my opinion. So iconic
It's all about characters and how they are developed, portrayed and, more importantly, put into action. Thankfully, Kane's was done masterfully well
The original kane and undertaker story got me into the show and sport, after they unmasked him it was just never the same
Brilliant video as always thanks for the hard work you put in
Greatest storyline ever told and one of the the best characters WWE has ever produced. WWE made everyone believed the story including myself. And Kane was the only one who could beat Undertaker who was so dominant that none was there to beat him at that point, and then Kane arrived and changed the entire scenario. Kane in the mask was the greatest of all time and definitely he was a monster. I still love the character.
Loved Kane, but he always seemed like a spin-off of the Undertaker. They basically shared all the same things, their entrance would cut off the lights, both "super-natural" like, both tall, and supposedly brothers lol. In the end, he was a great addition to the WWF and added more juice to the golden age that was the attitude era. Epic times!
The greatest ever to step in that ring... Thank you Kane for making my childhood awesome 😊
Thank you Jim Cornette for putting his heart and soul into creating this character.
TH-cam Kane training sitting up.
Love a LOT of stars in wrestling. But OG Kane, was the pinnacle for me. Hands down.
My whole life was a lie. I thought Kane was Undertaker's real brother. 😢
Kane is still my favorite debut ever
My favourite debut for any wrestler. The gimmick was amazing and Jacobs brought lots to the table himself -- everything from adapting Undertaker's move-set so it resembled him without copying him to that mannerism where he'd tilt his head to the side which he got from seeing his dog do it.
Hands down aesthetically the best wrestler of all time, I remember being scared AF of him as a kid that says it all about how well they made this character
Thank you for making this video!
He's been in my top 5 favorites list since I first seen him and can actually remember him when he saved Undertaker & Rock from DX in the lumberjack. I was 6 then and I'm going to meet him August 5, 23 days before my 30th birthday. 🔥💪
Great way to tell his story, Kane is a legend and is always my favourite!
Definitely the first version of Kane was the best. The whole “Jason” “meyers” walk and silent way was great for the character
Man growing up as a kid in the 90s watching WWF that entrance with the Undertaker and Paul Bearer holding those ashes used to scare me hahaha I really believed it all 😅
8:01 I love that he did the Michael Myers head tilt during the close-up, it shows that Kane was intended to be feared!!
The first version of Kane is the only one that matters. He quickly became a jobber, the friendship with xpac was a joke. Authority Kane was the biggest jobber I've seen. He would literally take a bump or go through ropes and call it a day.
Kane definitely gave WWF that sharpest edge. I mean the rock and stone cold were staples and edgy but the fact you never knew when Kane could come out and scare the shit out of everyone was just thrilling.. and much like horror movies thats why we watch wrestling.. for the thrill! RIP MJ thriller
Rip diddler
Great video. This could be done as a series looking back at wrestlers and their gimmicks
Great video mate. Thank you.
When kane and the taker teamed up as the brother's of destruction was amazing to watch them together
First watch of your channel great vid mate.. loved the Undertaker and Kane storyline in the late 90s.. shivers remembering that first match first sight of Kane.. only notes have to be if the producers drew inspiration from the biblical brother narrative from Genesis it’s CAIN!!!
Excellent video. Do you have any explanation of Imposter Kane story too? I think it ended abruptly.
Also, the role of excellent commentrators need to be appreciated. It made the whole experience even better. "That's gotta be Kane! That's gotta be Kane!".
Kane and Undertaker easily sums up childhood best WWE memories 💯🔥
Growing in the 90's was a fantastic time....i was a formula 1 fan too and Schumacher and Hakkinen was another amazing rivalry.
I was watching Bad Blood with my uncle at his house when I was only seven and I still remember how terrifying it was seeing him slowly walk to the ring and actually being slightly bigger than Taker. That era he was ridiculously jacked and looked so imposing. I HATED when they did to Glenn the last few years of his career though. That corporate Kane angle was so stupid in my opinion.
3:37 actually one of the best decisions ever made by Vince was to keep using the diesel and razor gimmicks. It led to him being able to have first dibs and a cheap payout to buy wcw. So ......
Kane and untertakers story line is by far the best one wwe has ever come up with...
Sadly, this iconic character had to suffer a downfall after the unmasking. Wwe should have never done that.
Kane before unmasking was too good.
Awesome video, thanks!
Met Jacobs when he and another wrestler came into Gamestop where I was working as a 3rd key manager. I was stocking the GBA games (dating myself hard here) when the associate I was working with started freaking out. When I looked forward to where he was point, Jacobs was standing there, looking at the games. I stood up and let me tell you...I'm 6'4"...it's not often I have to actually look UP at people. Started helping him (I had no clue who he was, I knew the Kane character but didn't know what he looked like) and he was one of the nicest guys I'd ever met. When my associate calmed down, he told me who I was talking to and Jacobs just nodded. Ended up selling him some PS2 and GBA games and he signed a copy of WWF Smackdown for both of us (mine sadly got lost in a fire).
I met Glen at a Crackle Barrel years ago , he is an incredibly nice person.
I remember the build up and his first appearance. One of if not the best ever.
"It's Paul Bearer, and that, that's gotta be... that's gotta be KANE!" -VKM
Imo the first half mask he was at his prime. He was explosive and athletic for a guy that big. There was also this dynamic that played with the undertaker being swifter and having more stamina that he would outlast and eventually get the win but you just had to weather the strom vs kane
Man I had nightmares of Kane chasing me 😂
I honestly thought as a kid that the Undertaker's "gimmick real" name was Abel, since his Brother was named Kane. 😂
Dude!!!! That is AWESOME!!! I can't believe I didn't think of that!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
The Kane and Able angle was brilliant.
Kane was my favourite wrestler as a kid, along with x pac. Was buzzing when they teamed up.
Rusev spoke about Kane as the smartest wrestler in WWE in general as a person. He really is an amazing character and as a person
At 2:41 that isn’t a picture of Glen Jacobs but rather a picture of Canadian athlete Glenn Kulka who was often mistaken as Jacobs at the time
I thought the best Kane was when he was unmasked. & That theme song is still BADASS!
my all time favorite....the mask the intro the storyline sublime😊
He is so underrated but i think he is best wrestler of all time
Damn I thought this was coming today
Kane's debut, his matches with Undertaker, the Inferno Match, the weirdness of the Urn and Paul Bearer... Kane, Undertaker, and Mankind are the peak of the "entertainment" part of Sports & Entertainment. The production value and storylines were insane. The Rock and Stone Cold were larger than life personalities, but, Kane and Undertaker were an actual piece of LORE. OG Kane was like a Dark Soul's boss. He was much more believable as an unstoppable force than Goldberg
I was so scared of kane back in the days! I always imagined how it‘d be to fight kane and how scared i would be doing it and making a plan to escape 😂 good old days as a kid
I did the same for undertaker!!!
One of my all time favs!
Kane was the first person I was ever afraid of. The contact, size and (of course) mask was truly something.
I was 7 when I saw him and legit thought he had been burnt up. Lol
Kane was like the darth vader of the wwe - the mask is scarier than the man behind it
So many false starts when the dude was always solid in the ring. Thank the gods he got the Kane gimmick. Seeing him when I was 6 made me fall in love with wrestling.
For years ... and I mean many years. I couldn't and didn't accept that Glen Jacob's was Kane the entire time. I was certain he was replaced.
Kane and undertaker are some of my favorite wrestlers. I especially like the tag team brothers of destruction. When undertaker and Kane are a tag team it seems like they're almost unstoppable
Did you used to commentate on football on the BBC in the UK, you sound just like a fella off there
*3:16* - The dude playing Razor Ramone on the left looks like Chuck Palumbo.
*best storyline WWE ever had and ever will have is kane and Undertaker storyline*
Perfect idea for a character and Glenn had the perfect build to go with that character. Kane will always be one of the greatest
What bout skinny kane
Kane great debut was at 1997 and they already destroyed him in 1998 by losing to Undertaker at WM and tag teaming with X-Pac and crying for him. Second great run was in 2001 when was Intercontinental champion and rule in Royal Rumble but he fail to win and quickly fail to mid card again. The last great rune was in 2003 when he lost mask and become psycho monster, but that also failed by feeding him to Triple H and again not winning WWE title. Yes, Kane was a great character and my favorite one, but his booking is the worst for any character in history.
Very Nice story of Kane and undertaker
