  • We have spent the last spring and summer shifting the way we organize our animals and equipment. Now I have another challenge that may shift the farm's focus entirely.

-We do not sell from the farm

Farming is not just a job, it’s a way of life. Pete, you look tired and worrying won’t help you heal from being sick. We have a small farm where we grow corn and beans and are trying to get a house built so we can live on the farm. Everything takes twice as long as it should but our dream has been to live on the farm. We are both 72 and we aren’t very patient anymore. But, we can only live one day at a time, so we wait and pray that all the hoops are jumpable. Build the shop, fix your tractors up and enjoy your life. God has a plan, just let him work it out. Best of life to you!

As a retired owner-operator who did the majority of my own maintenance, I would go ahead and build a shop if I could afford it. When you get it up you will wonder how you ever made it without a nice shop. Love the channel and know you will make the best for you and the channel!!!!!!!!1

If there is a demand for a repair channel for these tractors, perhaps treat this like your retirement package? Build the shop now, while you're able to do these repairs and run the farm. Then you'll have it when you undoubtedly shift from the farm labor to other activities you can manage. I'm only 8 years behind you and have had to pivot due to health several times. One slip on the ice in the winter and you may not be able to do the physical labor stuff like you can today. Nice to have a fallback.

I enjoy the video mix between the tractors, the animals, and the discussions on your thought process behind your decisions, or in the case of this video indecision. When you change your audience will change, but that should not be a factor in what is going to make you happy. As you get older it's nice to make life a bit easier. The shop would do that, and you have two large tractors with rather big restorations, so my vote is to get the shop done now so you can enjoy it. If you wait 10 years you'll be saying why didn't I do this sooner.

My dear departed husband (a certified Harley mechanic and gifted all-around wrench) talked for years about how he wanted his big shop to be. One very important thing was that it had to be bigger than his dad's was, because his dad built one and it didn't quite have enough room to squeeze around the front of the car being worked on, too close to the bench. So he had the measurements all figured out to ensure that he'd have enough room to get around trucks and cars when they were in there for whatever work.
But the main thing I want to say is - after we got it built, he spent the next ten years wondering why in the heck he didn't do it sooner, no matter how much trouble or money we had to scrounge to do it. He loved it. After 20 years in a little bitty shop, it was wonderful.
As they say about planting trees - the best time to do it is 30 years ago, the next best time is right now! (or something like that!) Go for it, might as well enjoy the results while you still can! 👍
(edit: but PLEASE don't completely give up on the occasional stroll around the farm and your marvelous repartee with your various critters, I'd really miss that. I already miss you calling the piglets all sorts of funny names, haha!)

Pete, your knowledge of the IH/Farmall Tractors is invaluable. I believe you hosting a channel to keep them rebuilt and restored would be of great service to the farming and enthusiast community. You likely don't give it much thought about your tractor knowledge but it is something so many (especially youth) have no idea about. I've learned a great deal from your handful of videos showing your work on repairs and restoration. I believe the mix of farm videos showing daily life along with the Winter time restorations and major repairs would be a good mix. Certainly some tough decisions but the best advice I’ve ever gotten is to follow one’s heart. Our minds play tricks on us by overthinking things. The answers will come in due time.
I let my own mind wonder about what I want to get myself into with our new place - hay business, berry farm, horses, beef cow, or just enjoy puttering with mowing, maintenance clearing ect. Or do I use my equipment to start a bush hogging business… I’ve been retired now for 16 months and picked up a new gig that keeps me engaged so I don’t sit around but my heart is tugging me towards something else. In the interim, I get to help my family on their dairy farm every weekend for the most part and I get to enjoy puttering for now on our own place.
Love your channel and just know that you’re a mentor to many.

Now retired and 56yrs old I have learned to do what thrills you most as time and death are fickle. Build the shop so you have a proper safe place to overhaul your tractors. Small spaces crammed with heavy parts are inherently dangerous and you don’t need to put yourself out of commission trying to “make do”. Live life to its fullest now. Tomorrow might not come. Keep up the awesome videos whether it’s farming or restoration I’ll be here waiting for each one. Cheers from Alberta Canada. 😊

You love your tractors. Maintaining them is obviously satisfying to you. Working on them and keeping them in top condition is such a part of what you enjoy in life, you most certainly should have a great shop to maintain them in, if you can afford it. You deserve to treat yourself to a great shop in your latter years, you've worked hard for what you have, so why not have a great shop to better and more comfortably meet the needs of your hobby as you get older? Plus, it's something you can pass down to your children, along with the farm. They are heirlooms, those wonderful old tractors you have collected and restored. The shop would be a great investment on top of that. I think a bigger, better shop is a great idea and well worth the investment. Especially if Hilary is in agreement with you and wants you to have what makes you happiest. You are doing what you love. That in itself is a good enough reason to do it. Life is short. Do what you love. But oh, please don't steer the channel away from the farm! Your farm is the core of what makes your channel so wonderful to watch! The animals and the precious service they provide for you, your family and the community... it is too precious an asset to steer away from, in my opinion. But you and Hilary know best. And that's really all the matters. Whatever you decide, I would certainly respect and support.

Pete, I have been following you over the past couple of years. I have enjoyed all the content you have created. As it relates to what you asked feedback for, my thoughts start with planning for the future. You are not getting younger so… #1 continually working to simplify your operations (and remain profitable), while simultaneously #2 taking steps to build your new shop (you need this sooner than later), and finally #3 taking only absolutely necessary steps to repair equipment. Concerning the channel content…I prefer the mix of every-day farm life and tractor restoration.

Moving things from here to there in those wonderful old trackers of yours. Nothing bothers me and It doesn’t matter what it is your showing, I know I’m gonna like it, no if’s or buts about it.

I would really miss the animals and the farm work if you went totally tractor in your focus. I'm a girl (well a 59 year old girl) and I never knew I would enjoy hearing about tractors and the different types and uses for each and of course the maintenance. But I really tune in for the animals and farm work. It's oddly relaxing!

I didn't rewatch the video, but I noticed a stronger energy around building the shop, knowing right where you'd put it. I live in Montana and debated whether building an insulated shop (vs an uninsulated smaller garage) would reap any money back down the road if we sold the place. I took my dad's inheritance money and began the shop, and every day we say, wow, so glad we built this shop. Winters are long and dark, but the shop has a cheery wood stove, bright lights, stereo, and it's inspiring to have a project to wake up to in the morning after chores. Turns out, it was a quality of life issue, not a financial or logical issue. Quality of life trumps saving all the pennies. My two cents. Maybe your quality of life dream isn't a shop, but whatever it is, you don't have much time left. I'm 66.

I totally get the shifting part for the farm. We did that just last year by selling most of the cattle and going into grain. Its a nerve wrecking choice that hold a ton of uncertainty but looking back a year later, we are quite happy. My father who will be turning 60 wanted a huge shop all his life so he could do wood working and restore tractor. After the last few years of pricing out a 40 by 50 ft shop, he came to the conclusion that the price to build it just does not make sense. So he shifted his plans and turned a bay from one of our pole sheds into his restoration shop and build a small addition onto his garage for much less. It might not be exactly what he wanted with all the fancy stuff but he is happy with it. That is one thing you could do too. Take the last bay of your shed and turn it into a heated shop. its quite cheap and not too much work to build it since the tructure is there. Just a idea.

To be honest (though I may be a little bias) I would build the shop first. I'm also a very hands on guy doing all my own mechanical work for many years. One of my biggest regrets is not building a good shop for myself. Even though I did take all of my gear from home at one stage into a rented premises to run my own business, I'm now back at home without the shop that I really should have built years ago. While I don't like having regrets in life, that is certainly one of them. Many of us love your channel the way it is, the farming & the odd bit of tractor resto work, I personally feel it goes hand in hand. When I was farming I too restored, modified or even built my own equipment, it just seemed natural to me being a farmer I repaired my own gear & still do! Just do what is right for you.

It was a pleasure to finally meet you... I came up on the labor day weekend but you were a bit busy with the morning rush. I wish I could have stayed longer, but that was not the day. I bought a pound of bacon and 2 ribeyes from you, and both of those items made it back to southern Mass with me at my wife's family clambake. We sampled the bacon along with our lobster and steamers.... and the next day we grilled up the steaks... I was pleasantly surprised and might consider the Dexters provided they can make it down here in the Texas heat..
Hope to see you again one day, in between getting our operation up and running, and work and life.. Your channel is the one I watch regularly. No sensationalism, no clickbait. Sure there is some "boring" and "repetition" but you are teaching others more than you think you are, and I've watched your farm evolve over the years. I've watched your tractor collection grow, and you try different things, make an analysis of how it worked for you, and make a decision.
We are just getting started... currently raising:
    Red Wattle pork..
    Layers
Doing our first few turkeys this year.
Next year will be broilers and starting up the beef herd.
Dave, from a small town in Texas you've never heard of (North Zulch Texas)

Pete, do what you want to do! The loader has to come off the 656 before it can be restored. If the 756 is sound why not put the loader on it to get by while you are working on the 656. Once the 656 has been restored if you want another loader tractor you could then buy and fix it up for the 656. Meanwhile using the 756 with a loader you didn't have to buy.

Enjoy all your wonderful videos, Pete and Hillary! Having been a dairy farmer for about 25 years I enjoy seeing all the animals and your approach on everything. You have so much patience working with the animals and I really appreciate that. Saying all that, your gift is with your mechanical skills. So detail oriented with great camera angles and explanations of what and why you’re doing things. I would get through this year, get your work shop built and start doing all your tractor projects there. I’m sure you would having a booming business of restoring tractors for as long as you wanted to do it. I would want you to rebuild mine after watching how fussy you are. Best of luck in your decision!! I’ll be watching, no matter what.
