Like Ethel Owen who played Alice's mother, Betty Garde was excellent in this role. She really played off Gleason very well. Jackie Gleason had a really good eye for talent.
Betty Garde is HYSTERICAL ,she is the funniest guest artist the show has ever had. When she says the line about the snacks,the camera includes Honeymooners "Stock Company" actor Frank Marth as the office manager,it appears that he is almost laughing at Betty Garde as opposed to her Character. I believe that it's better that THIS was her only Episode,she is immortal in the shows history that way.

Wonderful Betty Garde played Thelma. Others have noted that she was in a terrific The Twilight Zone, The Midnight Sun as Mrs. Bronson with Lois Nettleton and also in Caged as Kitty Stark who told Marie Allen to “Quit scrubbing. Chew the fat.” Her character also killed mean matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson) with a fork. Interestingly, both Emerson and Garde appeared in Cry of the City. Garde also portrayed the creepy key character Wanda Skunik in the Jimmy Stewart film Call Northside 777.
