I give it a 7/10. It had some really strong parts that thankfully outweighed the weaker parts. I just hope those weak parts don't become more prominent as the show goes on.
I think Desmond Hart might be a ghola (spell check.) I think he died on Arrakis and was reborn into a ghola, hence why he was some technology to burn people like that.
It is interesting to see Salusa Secundus as the seat of the Imperium and how fans will later recognize it as a the prison planet for the dreaded Sarduakar Legions. Kaitain is the seat of the Imperium during the books and that is where the Emperor lives in Part 1 and 2 of the movies.
Valya Harkonnen after Raquella's death: "She warned us. Tiran Arafel. A reckoning. A holy judgement brought on by a tyrant." God Emperor Leto II: "Do not fear the Ixians. They can create the machines, but they can no longer make Arafel" The same fear, separated by ~thirteen thousand years. With of course a bunch of misinterpreted visions and twists and turns over the thousands of years.
When Kasha had the vision with the blue eyes looking back in the darkness. You said machine eyes looking back. That was my initial thought. But makes me wonder, what if it was a different pair of blue eyes. A mind powerful enough to bridge space and time? Looking back at what the Bene Gesserit had been up to in the deep past?
Couldn’t be unless his memory core was put in a human body. And there was only one thinking machine that did that. Unfortunately he died saving someone in acid rain. Any other thinking machine, even the ones that joined humanity were destroyed by the butlarians. So I’m interested to see what’s up with Desmond. I think he’s a clone sent by the tleilaxu so they could infiltrate the BG and the imperium. Only time can tell
Maybe he is a special male mind like Paul and was exposed to the water of life (or something similar) on arrakis when he was gobbled up by the sand worm.
So far I liked it. The strong parts are what's happening with The Sisterhood (past and present), the power struggle for the Emperor's trust, whatever is going on with that Desmond Hart guy, and the stuff with House Harkonnen regaining their strength. Emily Watson and Jessica Barden are great as Valya. The only parts I didn't care for in this episode were the royal kids Constantine and Ynez. They're not horrible but their scenes felt so.... CW. I see why it's like a 70-ish percent on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb because that's what I'd rate it for now. The extended look at the rest of the season looks really promising.
I agree some moments especially the taxi and sex scene felt really "sci-fi series thing that everyone do" but in this universe it feel out of place maybe just having the princess and the atreide guy to talk while suggesting that they had sex would've been better
I'm surprised, honestly. I was not a fan of the young Valya, specifically the way she killed Dorothea just wasn't very intimidating or convincing to me. The Voice was by far the least fear inducing one we've seen on screen and it actually had me worried before we got to Emily Watson's parts. Glad the rest of the episode held up though for the most part, just that one scene put me off at the beginning.
@@lesmondesconvergeant9732 Yeah and it's obvious that in the Dune universe that sex is a big plot point because of the breeding, eugenics, bloodlines, and spiritual stuff but it was included here in such a pedestrian way that I scoffed. Again, I don't mind sex on screen, I'm sure there will be more of it in this series but it was so unsexy and pointless.
Desmond's story to the emperor is describing the sand as a water re-birth, while every place with water is full of manipulation, uncertainty, and fear like a mirage in a desert. There's an interesting reversal of archetype.
i think 'bob idaho' took water of life in arrakis or some version of it, and thats why he could control the sand worm in the hologram and that's why he can telepathically hurt the kid. its not like paul, its almost like he hacked into the bene geserit hive mind mainframe and when he's using it he's pulling from a bene gesserits power but whatever he uses it for happens to the person who's power he's taking. that's why kasha died like the kid, and its not cause she was bonded tothe kid cause the kid's family had their own bene gesserit, the kid and kasha didnt know each other. But 'bob idaho' heard about kasha from the emperor and so he knew whos power to target.
In the books the Bene Ges Gesserit identity two genetic memories, the female and the male. The "giver" and the "taker". The Bene Gesserit fear the male memories and turn away from them because they believe they are destructive, that's why they are trying to create the Kwisatz Hederach, an entity that can see and control both. Intact within their breeding program they have created "failed" Kwisatz's, men who have potential, but can not tap into the powers, they train these failed attempts in to a lesser, weaker version of the sisters. They also actively look to cull men who might have the power, but no control, see the test given to paul. I think "bob" is a "failed" Kwisatz, or what the sisters have been trying to avoid, a man who can control the male genetic memories, but cannot touch both. A "taker", a destructive monster. I think what we are seeing is the physical manifestation of the male memories, what Paul could have been or could become.
That’s not exactly how any of that works. No one can control a worm. Fremen can ride them, but that’s it. All the water of life is is highly concentrated spice essence that will send you into spice overdose. In order to survive and become a reverend mother, a sister has to convert the water to something safe to drink. But not all of them do, and die during the attempt. And by this point, only a handful of women became reverend mothers, and a man wouldn’t survive the water of life until Count Fenring, a failed kwizats haderach, and Paul Atreides. And the BG do not teach their techniques to males. And there isn’t really a hive mind, just their ancestral female memories. And that is the reason they are trying to breed the KH. The KH is a male reverend mother with the ability to see down the masculine and feminine ancestral memories
36:01 funny enough, there is quite a bit of inbreeding. And actually, the BG wanted Jessica to only have daughters for Duke Leto so that she could be married to the Harkonnen heir and seal the rift. This was so the kwizats haderach would be born under their control. But that moment of love resulted in the total up heaval of their society.
Regarding Travis, Raised by Wolves. Too bad it was canceled, but would have loved to see what he would have done with his character. Intense sounds about right Coy.
I love the explanation right off the bat that answered a question I had going into it , pertaining technology not changing much in 10,000 years to Paul’s time
So far this show seems interesting. I just cannot stand the narrative dialog. That's what i love about the movies there is no dialog unless absolutely necessary. This show broke the #1 rule of sci fi writing don't info dump early. It doesn't make the show bad just drives me crazy
That seems like a you problem, Star Wars had one of the most notorious info dumps in cinema history right at the start and it’s hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time. Plus that’s your “#1 rule” and a matter of fact if you see the need to info dump the best place to do it is right at the beginning to get it out the way so your main story can get uninterrupted time to let readers/watcher get full immersed in the current story you’re telling.
@@scotterell100I think they could have sold the prologue better without the exposition: the show got better the more the characters just talked to one another
For instance, let’s say the intro about Harkonnen and Atreides was not done and you get to the scene where Valya Harkonnen used the Voice to kill Reverend Mother Dorotea and she said her name like an insult, you wouldn’t know the significance of her doing that. Also, it explains her drive, unwillingness to bend and her eagerness to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals.Furthermore, if in future episodes you have characters that show open hostility towards her character, you would understand why that is without some random character interjecting to explain it to the reader/watcher
@@hellfish2309 I understand but sometimes there are just no ways around it, was just something that had to be done and I think it was just three minutes of an hour long premiere which made you understand a lot of stuff within this world in that small amount of time
@@scotterell100 I don’t think it had to be done personally. Yes, exposition is necessary on occasion, but not here. The second characters started talking to each other, they gave me a better idea of what was happening than the info dump did.
Look up the Butlerian Jihad. Very interesting and informative for why the thinking machines were forbidden. It’s very important to the overall Dune story.
One thing I was irritated by was that it was Valya Harkonnen who fashioned the Voice. I would have been happy with her having raised it up to its peak, but the show at least makes it seem like she created it out of nothing.
@beingandtime For me, it was the delivery. Like oh she just happened to put it together, and the first time she really makes use of it is the least convincing Voice heard so far. This is meant to be a powerful moment for the history of the sisterhood and terrifying for what it means for them going forward, but it isn't threatening in the least.
@ true, it wasn’t a very powerful voice, but it was still pretty eerie and I liked the shots of the water vibrating. Perhaps it wasn’t as powerful because it hasn’t been refined to what we know it as in the Dune movies. I also took it as she had been working on it for some time in secret, but had not had any reason to use it yet. She had no choice but to use it here because this moment was going to define what the sisterhood was to become moving forward.
@@beingandtime Because things generally evolve, they don’t just explode into existence. One example would be Sir Isaac Newton’s “I stood on the backs of giants,” indicating that the perceived leaps of Art and Science are actually the result of small yet hard earned changes over periods of time. I guess it’s fair to say Valya’s voice *could* actually be such a result, but I’d have hoped for more attribution, even if succinctly given.
@@beingandtime Maybe it was suppose to come off as a petulant princess not getting what she wants. I did not get eerie from it at all, it just didn't sell me as the powerful moment it was meant to be for the story. Some of the other young sister actors had the same problem for me, just not convincing. The rest though, especially Emily as older Valya, alleviated my early concerns immediately. Overall while it did bother me at the time, it didn't detract from the rest of the episode and I'm glad that I have a new show to get invested in.
the cast if wondering. - young valya is jessica barden. most known role is from a show called "end of the %^&*ing world". older is of course emily watson from red dragon an d kingsman golden circle. - mark strong his rep is huge but he was also in kingsman with emily blunt so interesting they together again in a show. - young tula is emma canning which her pretty new in last 3 years with various roles. older is olivia williams with her known main roles are dollhouse, manhattan and the crown s5 and s6. she was also the voice of the entwife in rings of power. - travis fimmel most know him from vikings but also in the movie warcraft. - jodhi may is the empress. you recognize her cause she is ciri grandmother/the queen in witcher series. movie rep she was in the movie the last of the mohicans with daniel day lewis. - Sarah-Sofie Boussnina is the princess which her rep is also varied since 2010. most known rep is from the show the bridge. - the young swordmaster is chris mason. roles also varied but most known even for 7 eps was in riverdale as chad gekko. but recent years he been in law and order, fbi most wanted and even doctor who episode called the devils chord. - the half brother to the princess is josh heuston but his core rep is he is a model. in handful of other media but he was in thor love and thunder as zeus pretty boy. - other characters like kasha is jihae who is a singer but she wasalso in altered carbon and succession. - brandon cowell as duke richese. bit of type casting cause he mostly plays a character with knowledge of ships. he was in game of thrones as harag, the show castaways on paramount+ but recent years and upcoming he is captain mick scoresby in avatar way of water and upcoming fire and ash. - and the actress playing the previous mother superior is cathy tyson. makeup they made her look way older but she looks good even at 59. she plays alot of various roles since the 90s but in recent years she was in the sandman as the voice of hecateae crone, a kid series called jojo and gran gran, a podcast series called radioman and in the game watch dogs legion she is the voice of connie robinson.
Queen Calanthe from The Witcher as the Empress in this series is so bizarre for me because she has so much raw power in the Withcer and here, thus far, she is falling in line behind her husband when she is clearly smarter than him 🤣
It looks promising for sure. The rise of the Sisterhood and making sure a Harkonnen sits on the throne. I can already sense the fear in Mark Strong's character because he is aware something will happen to him which he mentioned already but it will happen. Behind the scenes on Max streaming platform they talked about how they did the whole burning effect and it's pretty interesting. I am waiting for Tabu's Francesca's entrance in this series as she plays Mark Strong's character's former love interest in this series.
This series, it's striking a balance between the original Frank books, the Brian books, and the Villeneuve films. A very difficult task and so far they're kind of pulling it off. As usual we have weirdo book purists nitpicking details but that's expected for any book series adapted into the screen
As someone who never read the books. I was pleasantly surprised, cause seeing previews I got Acolyte vibes immediately. Raquella & Past Valya had me nervous as I really wasn't sold on some of their scenes, but everything else brought it home well.
Interestingly the tabletop rpg is also leaning onto the gm (aka the “truth” sayer) telling potential prophecies/visions. The starter set is alternate vision on atriedes didn’t go to arrakis but you play as a lesser house assigned by harkonnen. The campaign book you create a house be togehe or each one of you from different houses on side during events of the movies and hit after in the holy war deciding if ally, fight or hide from Paul and his army. Also forgot that the upcoming video game is also an alternate vision.
😂 the COPS referrence was funny... Static means the wire, the sopranos, Big Love, deadwood, Game of Thrones, and a whole lot more before I get to enterage for me... what's the same though is that static is just the best...
I don't know if it's explained in the books at all, but it seems very weird to me that within the 10000 years between this and the movies, there's barely any advancement in technology
The books explain, and the show touches upon it (the extreme reaction to House Richese's ducal heir's mechanized A.I. toy). Due to humankind once being enslaved by Thinking Machines (sentient A.I.), certain tech, A.I., or anything that approaches being A.I., is outlawed with (usually) severe punishment if discovered (eg. death). But tech like memory discs and spaceships exist. And some races, like the Ixians and Thelaxu--and House Richese on the show--secretly and illegally build advanced tech, including human clones and advanced A.I. machines. Most of the advancement comes in the way of pushing the boundaries of human accomplish without the aid of A.I. but via Spice usage, such as once-human Navigators folding space to travel over vast distances in space quickly, Mentats being able to solve higher order logic and math problems within seconds, and Bene Gesserit being able to control people, and diseases, with their voices and bodies.
@@cecillbillthe book doesnt explain, it comes up with a bad bs excuse for it. I love dune, but the author had no notion of science or the evolution of technology whatsoever, sadly
@@pedroi.s2093 that’s from the books though. They had atomic wars with machines and after that, ‘thinking machines’ were outlawed and advanced tech was no longer allowed. The first episode showed and explained this. It’s got nothing to do with whatever beliefs you have or hate today.
Shane on all of you for not knowing Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings. I dont know what you guys are doing at this channel, but you arent doing it right if theres no Vikings reactions.
After seeing the first episode I've decided I'm not going to be going into this thinking of it as a Dune series much like I did going into Rings of Power as a LotR series. Young adults slithering into a club and doing 'drugs' while having sex as rave music played in the background took me out of it. That was the point I realized this wasn't going to be faithful in tone to Frank Herbert's work, but rather something of its own design. Not really a bad thing, I still enjoy it for what it is, but I can already see a lot of faithful Dune fans who are going to be disappointed.
@@juina I get that but as weird as they were his sexual interactions had intention, not just a random hookup at a nightclub. At times the show feels more like Bridgerton in space
Agreed. I’m not a die hard Dune fan- but for things to make sense to me for the basic storyline- I think this was a great introduction but it needs to be built upon within the next 2 episodes to keep me interested.

travis fimmel stole every scene he's in 😎
I think Desmond might be a thinking machine in disguise
doesn't explain the mind pyromancy.
@@ludiqtitan maybe it’s ixian tech
Maybe he is a special male mind like Paul and was exposed to the water of life (or something similar) on arrakis when he was gobbled up by the sand worm.
@@beefish00, ok, so where's the tech? Its invisible?
Yea the coke in the limousine scene was not needed, nor was the sex scene. That was my only complaint. 7.5/10 for me
@@1243fadexactly and I don’t mind sex and drugs on screen but that felt so out of place here.
Loved Travis Fimmel in Raised by wolves happy he has another great role
Did he control the worm in the hologram or was he swallowed by it. I could not tell
@@beingandtime Maybe both?
36:01 funny enough, there is quite a bit of inbreeding. And actually, the BG wanted Jessica to only have daughters for Duke Leto so that she could be married to the Harkonnen heir and seal the rift. This was so the kwizats haderach would be born under their control. But that moment of love resulted in the total up heaval of their society.
59:04 I like that it worked in the explaination of intelligent machines being banned, it was a war, that they then banned them after winning
Seeing Travis again reminds me how bummed I am that Raised by Wolves was cancelled...
Regarding Travis, Raised by Wolves. Too bad it was canceled, but would have loved to see what he would have done with his character. Intense sounds about right Coy.
In the books the machine war is called the butlerian jihad and i can understand why they decided not to call it that but as a dune fan i want them to.
To much political correctness, the west has turned the word jihad into something bad
How's everybody duning today?
Dunning good!
Travis Fimmel😍😍 Loved him as a Viking, and I'm loving this so far.
Great first episode. Looking forward to seeing where this goes
They need to cast travis as aegon l if they make a film or a series
I love the explanation right off the bat that answered a question I had going into it , pertaining technology not changing much in 10,000 years to Paul’s time
i dont know wat happened but at 0:58 i liked, subscribed, and hit the notification button out of no where. as if i was in a trance!
The secret of vow of the Sisterhood was: The power of One! The power of Two! The POWER OF BENE!
Don't start that crap
The lore is amazing and so rewarding to read and also see them do the books justice in series.

Why is that irritating?
Felt like game of thrones in space. Really enjoyed it, the soldier who comes to the imperium is really interesting character
The opening to this show makes me hope for a horizon zero dawn live action series
Queen Calanthe from The Witcher as the Empress in this series is so bizarre for me because she has so much raw power in the Withcer and here, thus far, she is falling in line behind her husband when she is clearly smarter than him 🤣
Bob idaho is ragnar from vikings, right?
Yes and also Anduin Lothar from Warcraft
Yay! Was hoping you'd jump onto this show. ❤ y'all.
Im only watching this show for Ragnar Lothbrok aka Travis.
First time i stop watching you because of not be spoiled. It's a testament how mutch i love you guy.
Pretty cool show, I like that I have no idea where it's going but I kind of know the outcome, if you know what mean, lol.

" she's going to feel his sandworm" was a funny line from Andrew
Interestingly the tabletop rpg is also leaning onto the gm (aka the “truth” sayer) telling potential prophecies/visions.
The starter set is alternate vision on atriedes didn’t go to arrakis but you play as a lesser house assigned by harkonnen. The campaign book you create a house be togehe or each one of you from different houses on side during events of the movies and hit after in the holy war deciding if ally, fight or hide from Paul and his army.
Also forgot that the upcoming video game is also an alternate vision.
Wait a sec Coy, stop what you doing and go watch Vikings! ahahah thats all I got from this video. xD

This show was advertised on social media and Max quite a bit

Travis Fimmel is making this show works.
Not really a bad thing, I still enjoy it for what it is, but I can already see a lot of faithful Dune fans who are going to be disappointed.
bruh there's a spice orgy in the first book, and it gets even more wild in later books, this is totally in line with weird Frank Herbert stuff
@@juina I get that but as weird as they were his sexual interactions had intention, not just a random hookup at a nightclub. At times the show feels more like Bridgerton in space
