This had me laughing out loud.
There was an article in spin magazine twenty or so years ago interviewing the Boston band Cave In. They were talking about how influential Radiohead was to them. The guitarist said, “if they all farted into a paper bag, they would buy it.” I’ve heard it quoted in a couple of different articles. Always had me chuckling.
Considering the great Bernie Grundman is at the helm, I'll always buy these up and the market agrees.
I checked that Townshend concert video and have to agree with you! What energy and verve! Had no idea that Pete could dance the jig. That led me to the rest of the concert and was so surprised to see Pete covering The Beat’s “Save It For Later”. Buried treasure!
So done with the frenzy buying resellers. Was at a show recently, reseller grabbed every Beatles record, the seller with the booth had good prices and wanted to get the records to people that’d listen and enjoy them, they upped price on the reseller. Respect the seller for calling them out and and stopping that kinda ridiculousness.

There's not a ton for me this time around, but as always, I'm very happy everyone else. RSD is exciting for me even when I don't take part. Anything that gets people excited about music and records is good by me

I’m super excited for that Art Pepper in Mono.
When they first started doing RSD, the first couple of years, there were lots of new titles that I wanted and I would buy some other records I found in stock that I wanted, and would spend $400. to $500. Then later, there were fewer things I wanted and they never seemed to get a majority of items which was on the list. They claim that they ordered everything and this is all they got.
After standing in line before the store opened for up to an hour. Then after waiting your turn to get to the table, they would only let you to take one item, then you had to get back in line again and hopefully what you wanted was still there. I was tired of standing in line and then not finding what I wanted, sometimes I'd walk out without spending a dime.
After the RSD list comes out, I start looking on eBay and find items listed a few days before RSD and often at a better price. If there was something that I wanted and didn't find at the store, usually I can find it at eBay for a good price. Although it isn't supposed to happen, but it is obvious that the records never made it to a record store shelf and they were skimmed off.
There used to be more giveaway items, like sampler CD's, free RSD bags, posters, etc. It's very lean now. Heck, I haven't got a bag for several years.
Although we have several record stores in Fresno, CA, the independents don't get that many, if any RSD titles. Our largest store is Rasputin Records and they get the most stuff in, but still only a fraction of the list.
With many of these titles supposedly in limited supply, I can't begin to tell you about all the RSD titles, some several years old, which are sold through Universal's online stores, The Sound Of Vinyl and uDiscover Music, which I have bought recently. They even show up at Amazon, like the 2018 RSD copy of "Gold" by Jefferson Starship which I got a couple of days ago. Yes, these are genuine RSD releases, complete with the stickers.
I have grown tired of RSD and will maybe wander in later in the day. Usually I find something I want. I also go to Boo's Records in San Luis Obispo at different times of the year and they will have bins full of RSD releases, so I buy an armload there. If stores like Rasputin don't want my money, I'll go elsewhere that does.
Great summary. Kinda surprised you didn't mention the Nick Cave and Bad Seeds release. Never been on vinyl as far as I know and only 2700.

Mike, I'm not sure if you know but our Ambassador this year is also on Portraits of Her, it has different women from different genres playing on here for nonprofit for women in music or something like that. My list has grown so much over the last couple of days I need to whittle it down somehow I don't think you mentioned Charles Mingus The lost albums and if you did I must have missed it that is on my list I also want Art Pepper, and Robert Lester Folsom Music and Dreams 1976 it really sad what happened to him as far the music business and how he was forgotten.
I'm in "the hole" with my bank, so it may be a while before I can shop freely again! 😫

The Lida Husik ' Fly Stereophonic ' release is a real coup. First time on vinyl. Its only on the RSD 2022 UK / Europe list though.
Don't get confused, people will ALWAYS line up for music that they love to support. The line forming from the middle of the night at local record stores won't be going anywhere anytime soon :)

Great stuff Mike. RSD starting to move away from the music lover and collector towards the scalpers. I know of people who simply look at the numbers pressed.
Love the doors too but sticking with the boxset cd version.

Personally, I’ve had it with Record Store Day,,,, last year I waited in line,,, stuff sold out and listed on EBay and Discogs that morning! To be honest, I’m really happy that there is nothing on the list that I want, so I don’t have to go out that day ( it’s kinda sad that I find RSD so annoying, because in the old days it was so much nicer )
I don’t buy remastered vinyl but if this guy said it’s a killer press then maybe I would.
I may be one of the only people excited about the Jeannie C. Riley release. I have never seen it out in the wild but it’s been on my Discogs wantless and there are many copies for under $10. She gets dismissed as a one hit wonder with Harper Vally PTA but man after listening to her episode on Cocaine and Rhinestones along with getting a copy of Yearbooks and Yesterday’s I have to say I am a fan! What are people’s thoughts on the Joni Mitchell Blue release I’m really hyper for that and the Karen Dalton release.
I used to see that Harper Valley PTA album around my area frequently in the 80s and 90s. Likely because it was filmed near in the same area which spiked interest.
It doesn't seem like there's very many Hip Hop releases this year 😕 I only tend to buy underground Hip Hop on vinyl or older music from the vinyl era.
Record store day seems like a good idea, but there are very few records I actually like.. more modern artists need to start doing more record day stuff, like old music just takes it over completely :(
I've been burnt too many times by Iggy/Stooges live albums that have claimed to be high-quality recordings and end up being really lousy. I've listened to a few tracks from that title on TH-cam and the quality isn't great so I'm definitely going to approach with caution!
I ended up grabbing it because I really like the Brick By Brick album, and had a really hard time finding it on vinyl, even back in the 90s.
It was recorded on that tour, so I wanted it.

Don't know if the regional stuff is just country based, we have some swedish music on our list, and we are not getting some of the american drops this year.. unfortunatley everlast is one of em 😏 was lookin forward to not paying $100+

I wish there was a way to throw a wrench at these flippers who buy up a whole lot then double the price to buyers when it comes to limited edition releases. Or better yet, it would be nice if the record companies would stop it with the multitude of limited editions.

Craft is pressing 6k of the Art Pepper. That’s 3x as many as the Kenny Dorham which is a more desirable title. No shade on the Art Pepper, which is an amazing session, but I’ve seen that 80’s OJC George Horn cut in the wild for anywhere from 10-25 bucks more than a few times in the past year.
The Art Pepper is a better more desirable title. It sold better back in the day and all through the decades. That’s why many pressings of it exist.
Take a quick glance at the Discog numbers for both mono first presses and then tell me again which one is more desirable. ;-)

My local record shop sound it out records has caught and banned a load of ebayers so word go to out and we generally see only regulars and people who don't look like ebayers

That Art Pepper record sounds truly marvellous in stereo. Hard-panned?! You don't go around saying to musicians on a band stand: "hey, could you position yourself to the left AND the right of the stage, please?" Haha.
Normally you put a drummer in the middle of the stage and spread out the rest of the musicians. Your don't load up the left side of the stage.

This album is #1 on my list to snag. And it’s not even close. I had the CD on repeat from ‘99-‘02. Album is a masterpiece.
That's a great concert of Pete. And White City is probably his last real good album.

The Bill Evans “Behind the Dikes” RSD from last year was pretty good. However, I’m worried about the two this year. The Resonance pressing of “Some Other Time” is just horribly noisy, so I’m hoping they get their act together this time.

The median price of the 2nd pressing of Some Other Time is $80 (higher than msrp). Sounds like you got unlucky with your pressing. But it's not their problem.
1987 was not the "tail end" for vinyl records.... that was about 1991 ...
True, but it was the beginning of the end. That was the year record clubs (Columbia House, etc) stopped shipping vinyl titles to subscribers.
That is not true.
Columbia House was the only way to get certain 90/91 releases on vinyl, in the US, back when LPs disappeared from most mainstream -record- CD and tape stores.
I went to indie stores and Tower downtown when that happened.
@@Plarocks Interesting. A friend of mine was sent a letter from his service in '87 saying they would no longer honor vinyl orders: when they ran out they ran out. Not sure it was Columbia House, though. Might have been another record club. I remember going to the mall back in '91 and the record bins were gone basically overnight (NRM & Camelot Music).
Ok don't shoot me but do we even need a Record Store Day anymore? Especially with the pressing delay issues there are now. It made sense when it started, helping struggling record stores but is that as much of a problem now? I do understand there are record stores that still need the help but there are so many releases all year round that it certainly seems less about the stores and more about the record companies now. IMHO anyway!
Don't get me wrong, I do like RSD and I always buy a few records but they are very expensive and I think maybe a year off could have been a good idea in this climate
There's definitely still a lot of deadweight nonsense on this RSD 2022 list. One shining example....Peppa Pig. Peppa Pig should be a WalMart or Target exclusive, not something that makes indie retailers feel obligated to stock.
