    As a Pistons fan, you have no idea how happy it makes me that you're making a video about us LOL. Thanks for highlighting his defensive strengths. Since he understandably doesn't have the defensive stats forwards like Mobley and Barnes may have, most NBA fans don't understand the complete impact Cade has on our team.

      The people who don't understand his complete impact are simply stat sniffers. Out of the top 10 of his class Cade is the one with the burden to being THE offensive hub for his team. So it makes sense his numbers will fluctuate because as good as his skillsets are for a 20 yr old, teams also game plan to primarily shut him down over his other teammates.

    Cade did 22.9/5.9/7.0 on .480/.324/.826 shooting for in March which is a 14 game sample. He has been playing at the level for 20 games though.
    Luka did 21.2/7.8/6.0 on .427/.327/.713 shooting for his rookie year.
    Luka is 26.3/8.5/8.0 on .457/.336/.736 for his career.
    People say Cade needs to reduce TOs. Cade has averaged 3.6 while Doncic has averaged 4.1 for his career.
    People say Cade needs to become more efficient shooter. Luka has been .336 from 3 for his career. It's BS to say Cade has to get to 37-38%.
    What Cade really needs to do is become consistent with his March numbers for an entire year and figure out how to get more FTs. Then he's scary close to Doncic who is a consistent MVP candidate. Three more made FTs a game, a couple of more rebounds and Cade is virtually identical to Luka statistically. He's really not that far off from one of the best young players in the game as a rookie. At the least, you have to admit he has flashed a Doncic level.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just don't get too caught up with numbers. The coolest thing with Doncic I admire of him as a player is that every year he works on something in the summer and shows near mastery of it by the next season. Not every young player is capable of adding something legit in their bag every year and having it be part of their arsenal. In Luka's rookie year he was flirting how to execute that James Harden step back. By his 2nd year he mastered that and was figuring out how to be an elite below the rim finisher. By year 3 he had all those and by playoffs was working on a sick dribble fade away midrange jumper. By year 4 he had the midrange fade away as a bread and butter and his progress was more about working off Kidd's scheme to be an off-ball guy. This progress you can't see in numbers necessarily but only on film and on court application. Here is hoping Cade has a similar yearly progression.

    What I love about your videos is that there’s no sense of bias anywhere and very clear analysis without too many numbers and statistics, just enough. Being a Pistons fan it’s always awesome to see breakdowns/studies of my team being that we’ve been in limbo since 2008.
    That being said, I think someone else said it as well but his inefficiencies (specifically at the rim and midrange) could be due to him not being a fully, physically developed NBA player. A lot of his FGA come at the rim and going up against the centers and PFs today is part of the learning curve. And not to be “one of those guys” who look for foul calls all the time, but he’s getting 2.5 FTA a game. When I do get to watch games there are some fouls that go uncalled and it takes a hit on his FG% being that he likes attacking the rim. But even though he was drafted into what a lot of people think is NBA purgatory, he puts in 110% of effort. You showed him closing out hard on defense and really showcasing his talent on that end, he’s really showing that he’s willing to accept the role of being THE guy to turn our franchise around and it makes me excited with the other pieces falling into place around him already. Saddiq Bey who is a walking bucket, MB3 who is having a resurgence in Detroit, Isaiah Stewart and Jeremi Grant (even though he may be traded in the offseason). There’s a lot to look forward to with Cade leading the way and Troy Weaver making decisions.

    kinda hard to get a full view on how good Cade will be solely due to how bad the Pistons were early in the season. Missing Grant/Olynyk/ Frank Jackson took 3 of our best shooters out for substantial time not to mention not having a true lob threat until the Bagley trade. Also it doesn’t help that he’s one of the least FTA players in comparison to how many shots he takes per game. I think as the players around him develop and detroit adds a few more pieces it will only make Cade better.

Cade has a ton of volume stats and gets to stretch his game more being on a rebuilding Detroit team, and given more room to try things and make mistakes. If Cade went to Toronto, he wouldn't average anywhere near the per game numbers he's averaging in Detroit and wouldn't get nearly as much opportunity for on ball creation that he does in Detroit.
      While I think being on a good Raptors has helped Barnes' "stock" in many ways, being with other capable playmaker has definitely reduced his usage and opportunities to playmake. The biggest thing that lowers how much opportunity Barnes gets to showcase his skills is that the Raptors have so many combo forward type players, including 2 of their top 3 players in Siakam and OG. His overlap in position with him probably impacts his usage significantly. It's remarkable Barnes has been able to score and playmaker at the volume he does given he's sometimes the 4th or 5th option on that end.

Huge free throw discrepancy between Cade and others taking 8+ shots in the paint - can't buy a whistle - true shooting takes a hit. It's a historic rookie season with Jerami Grant's 40 games representing his best 'help'. And still the tone around Cade is negative.
    For context, the Cavs are a bottom 6 defense without Jarrett Allen yet Mobley's about to waltz to a ROY playing alongside 2 all-stars. Even Scottie has 2 all-stars and strong pieces. Why does W/L determine the ROY race suddenly? The Detroit vs Everybody line exists for good reason.

I think he's got the ability to be an all star but I'm more skeptical than before the season on him ever being a top 10 player given these percentages. His context is also very tough as you noted, he's benefitted some from having Bagley to throw lobs to, despite the fact that Olynyk is one of our better players. Not gonna mention how many times gets fouled and the refs refuse to blow the whistle? Half of the inefficiency is because of horrific officiating. Never seen a guy get fouled so much and never getting a call. A quarter of the inefficiency was at the start of his season when he missed his 1st nba training camp and preseason to start the nba adjustment process. Cade is by far the most complete player in this class and one of the best rookies to come into the nba in yearssss. Supremely talented offensive conductor with a high basketball iq = ⭐️

He's been the best rookie by a wide stretch and I don't really think it's close. Generating the amount of offense he does for himself, guarding 1-5, playing huge minutes on a team that's improved as much as it has. His usage and shot attempts went up after the ASG weekend and he's improved his efficiency. Seriously, he's in rookie LeBron territory, and Cade simply put isn't.

    Cade's efficiency struggles since first 15 games of season are practically a non-issue. His finishing around the hoop since all-star break I believe would be elite if he was drawing more fouls. I didn't like that the summary argument didn't account for stark improvement throughout the season, especially in 2 pt scoring. It's up to .514 2pt FGA's since all-star break. He's so good and patent in traffic. When he learns how to get to the FT line, I think he could have elite efficiency.

What other rookie besides Cade missed training camp, preseason and a couple of games to start his rookie season? 🤔 Did Cade play semi-pro basketball against other professionals like Jalen wonder 🤔? Did Cade play with other All-Star caliber players like Mobley and Scottie 🤔? Which position is the hardest one to learn in the NBA 🤔? Duh...point guard. And I think we don't need to worry too much about his shooting. The form looks good. And he is a hard worker. although a little bit changed comparing his college. Only how the Pistons gonna build is worrisome.
    I also don't think Pistons is using him too heliocentric(like Harden or Luka)? There is quite a lot of possessions they just gave to Bey, Hayes, and Grant. Cade is 27 usage and Grant is 25.

    Ben, do you think his less-than-ideal team situation has contributed to his inefficiency? Seeing how he doesn't have the best offensive help around him, defenses might have exploited that and devoted more resources to stifling his shots everywhere. He obviously has a chance to be better than that but based on what he's shown there's definitely reason to be concerned if you are looking at him as an MVP-level heliocentric superstar. And Ben tends to be more realistic than a lot of other people who cover the league.

      Could he get to where Luka is now? Sure. But I'd argue that player isn't good enough (efficient enough) to be the #1 on a title team without a true 1B (think Anthony Davis). It's just not a given he gets his true shooting over 60% given the relative difficulty level of his shot attempts compared to his peers (Zion, Ja, Edwards). If he does get there it's a wrap because his playmaking is already in the top 5% of the league. It's just not an easy thing to make 50% in floater range + 37% on 8 threes per game which is basically what he needs to do.

    I see Cade as the closest Luka clone now or in the pipeline, slightly less wizardry, but more well rounded as athlete, shooter, off-ball, defense. To me it all comes down to FT Rate. Obviously Cade wasn't quite as physically ready as Luka coming in, but he plays so similarly in half court it's hard to figure why he's so much lower. Cade definitely seeks contact, but perhaps not arm contact, anyway he needs to figure that part out. Gain strength, get FT Rate to par, and I see no reason he can't be that level of play. The offensive bag is equally as deep, if not more so. I think Cade has even more uncanny shot release ability than Luka had as a rook

    I love the idea of adding a true point guard next to him and both of them share primary ball handling duties. kinda like what he had with Mike Miles in AAU. Allows him to focus on scoring while also being a deadly passer. If they get a first round pick for Jerami Grant and it's not the Blazers pick, I would get Kennedy Chandler to pair with him.
    Also, with the addition of Bagley finally unlocked his lob passes that was missing playing with Isaiah Stewart. Imagine with what he's doing with Bagley, how would he do with Jalen Duren. that's a match made in heaven for both sides. Also, Jabari Smith is also a outstanding pair next to Cade.

    I think Detroit should be heavily prioritizing drafting a center now that Cade looks like he's going to pan out. Similarly to a PnR handler like James Harden for example, Cunningham would greatly benefit from having a big guy who can roll and catch lobs + play down low on either end. That "Shaq & Kobe” archetype of teambuilding around a complementary duo could be a good roadmap for the Pistons rebuild if they the right prospect comes along.

    I’m sorry, but you’re either not paying attention or you’re a biased raptors fan if you think Scottie Barnes is better than Cade. Scottie Barnes is really good, like really good, he’s so far ahead of schedule compared to what we thought it’s not even funny. But he’s in a perfect situation, on a team that can fully unlock his skill set. Scottie plays like a supercharged role player. Putbacks and short rolls are a massive part of his game on offense, with some mid range and play making duties sprinkled in.
    On the other hand, the pistons completely dumped the entire offensive load on Cade (pause). They just aren’t really on the same level. Scottie Barnes, while being really good is a cog in the machine, while Cade is the machine. Switch the teams that each players are on and the raptors are easily better, while the pistons are somehow much worse.

    • @LaniSternRealty
      @LaniSternRealty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you see how the Raptors year began, with Siakam on the sidelines, Barnes was red-hot with tons of touches. He's actually the more natural point guard between him and Cade in my opinion. I see Cade as being a good-passing scorer, whereas Scottie creates scoring opportunities for himself, because he's a good passer. Our offense is not tailored to his strengths - he would be phenomenal if he had guys that cut off ball and more 3pt threats. It's not like the Raptors are swimming in 3pt threats either, we just have a janky defense, aimed at blowing everyone's game up and forcing teams to spread shot attempts around.

    He would benefit so much from a good big who can catch lobs & rebound. They get outrebounded in so many clips. Also, his game reminds me of SGA quite a bit. While Cade is much stronger, they both have a slow game & seem to be under control at all times.

    Looking at this 4 months later after Pistons got Jaden Ivey and obviously hyped as a Pistons fan. People predicting best Pistons backcourt since Bad Boys don't really seem crazy. This is like a Luka-Ja combo! So hyped!

    He's the typical Big point guard (amazing defense, passing and rebounding but no jump shot) . He needs to be paired with a true pure scorer forward / shooting guard and a rim runner/ rim protector 7 footer to unlock the full potential of his abilities.

      He's actually a really nice shooter. Got off to a terrible start and had a couple of injuries. His shooting numbers are much better in the last couple of months and he's an excellent free throw shooter which usually translates into being a good shooter.

    His coordination and dexterity are damn near MJ like. Very fluid athlete. Just not twitchy and explosive like Mike. Cade has a very aesthetically pleasing game. Much needed because mostly this era doesn’t possess the nuances he does.
